Abstract:In this paper we report the preliminary design and considerations on a multi-discipline ultra-fast source, which is capable of providing the user community with femtosecond electron bunch and light pulses with the wavelength ranging from IR to X-ray. The facility is based on photocathode RF gun driven by a Ti:Sapphire laser system. The low emittance subpicosecond electron bunch at the gun exit can be used in femtosecond electron diffraction setup to visualize the ultrafast structural dynamics. After acceleration and compression, the electron beam with the energy of 50 MeV is further used to provide high peak brightness X-ray by inverse Compton scattering with TW laser. We also consider the possibility and reliability of storing the electron beam in a compact storage ring and the laser pulse in a super-cavity. Operating in this scheme may increase the average flux of the X-ray photons by orders of magnitude.

Abstract:With the availability of off-the-shelf commercial ultrafast lasers, a small revolution in materials research is underway, as it is now possible to use these tools without being an expert in the development of the tools themselves. Lasers with short-duration optical pulses—in the sub-picosecond (less than one-trillionth of a second) range—are finding a variety of applications, from basic research on fast processes in materials to new methods for microfabrication by direct writing. A huge range of pulse energies are being used in these applications, from less than 1 nJ (a billionth of a joule) to many joules.

Abstract:We demonstrate a versatile technique for generating continuously wavelength-tunable laser waveforms, with mJ pulse energies and ultrashort pulse durations down to few-cycle in the ultraviolet C and visible spectral ranges. Using the processes of self-phase modulation or Raman-induced spectral broadening, we substantially expand the spectrum of a femtosecond 1030 nm Yb:CaF$_{2}$ laser, allowing for an extensive wavelength-tunability of the second and fourth harmonics of the laser within the visible and ultraviolet C spectral regions at 460-580 nm and 230-290 nm. In addition, our approach exploits nonlinearly assisted self-compression in the second harmonic upconversion of the spectrally broadened infrared pulses with high-order dispersion. This results in 8-30 femtosecond pulses in the visible with an intensity enhancement of up to 30 times. Such an ultrashort visible and ultraviolet C source is ideal for investigating ultrafast dynamics in molecules, solids, and bio and nano systems. Furthermore, this tunable light source enables the generation of bright, narrow-bandwidth, continuously wavelength-tunable, coherent light in the extreme ultraviolet to soft X-ray spectral region. Theoretically, the X-ray pulse structure can consist of sub-200 as pulse trains, making such a source highly suitable for dynamic multidimensional imaging. This includes coherent diffractive imaging of ferromagnetic nanostructures where resonant X-ray scattering is essential, as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopies of advanced quantum materials at pico-nanometer spatial and atto-femtosecond temporal scales.

Abstract:Manipulating the atomic and electronic structure of matter with strong terahertz (THz) fields while probing the response with ultrafast pulses at x-ray free electron lasers (FELs) has offered unique insights into a multitude of physical phenomena in solid state and atomic physics. Recent upgrades of x-ray FEL facilities are pushing to much higher repetition rates, enabling unprecedented signal to noise for pump probe experiments. This requires the development of suitable THz pump sources that are able to deliver intense pulses at compatible repetition rates. Here we present a high power laser-driven THz source based on optical rectification in LiNbO3 using tilted pulse front pumping. Our source is driven by a kilowatt-level Yb:YAG amplifier system operating at 100 kHz repetition rate and employing nonlinear spectral broadening and recompression to achieve sub-100 fs pulses at 1030 nm wavelength. We demonstrate a maximum of 144 mW average THz power (1.44 uJ pulse energy), consisting of single-cycle pulses centered at 0.6 THz with a peak electric field strength exceeding 150 kV/cm. These high field pulses open up a range of possibilities for nonlinear time-resolved experiments with x-ray probing at unprecedented rates.

Abstract:We present a compact extreme ultraviolet (XUV) source based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) at 2.4 MHz pulse repetition rate driven from the compressed output of a mode-locked thin-disk laser (TDL) oscillator. The system generates very high peak intensities, which enable highly nonlinear frequency conversion reaching VUV/XUV energies. These sources significantly increase the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce measurement durations in many fields such as condensed matter physics. The pulse repetition rate is increased from kilohertz to megahertz with high average photon flux, while keeping the pulse energy sufficiently low to avoid space charge effects. The system uses a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked Yb:YAG TDL delivering an average power of up to 70 W with subpicosecond pulses, which are efficiently compressed to sub-100 fs in a simple, single-stage compressor based on a Kagome-type hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Focusing into a high-pressure xenon gas jet, we generate XUV radiation with up to >5×107 photons/s on the 19th harmonic (23 eV). This HHG system is very compact, has low-noise performance comparable to standard ultrafast low-power laser oscillators, and provides a new tool for the study of attosecond dynamics in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:The birth of attosecond light sources is expected to inspire a breakthrough in ultrafast optics, which may extend human real-time measurement and control techniques into atomic-scale electronic dynamics. For applications, it is essential to obtain a single attosecond pulse of high intensity, large photon energy and short duration. Here we show that single 100-terawatt attosecond X-ray light pulse with intensity ${1times10^{21}}textrm{W}/textrm{cm}^{{ 2}}$ and duration ${7.9} textrm{as}$ can be produced by intense laser irradiation on a capacitor-nanofoil target composed of two separate nanofoils. In the interaction, a strong electrostatic potential develops between two nanofoils, which drags electrons out of the second foil and piles them up in vacuum, forming an ultradense relativistic electron nanobunch. This nanobunch exists in only half a laser cycle and smears out in others, resulting in coherent synchrotron emission of a single pulse. Such an unprecedentedly giant attosecond X-ray pulse may bring us to view a real attoworld.

Abstract:Abstract High harmonic generation (HHG) enables coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) radiation with ultra-short pulse duration in a table-top setup. This has already enabled a plethora of applications. Nearly all of these applications would benefit from a high photon flux to increase the signal-to-noise ratio and decrease measurement times. In addition, shortest pulses are desired to investigate fastest dynamics in fields as diverse as physics, biology, chemistry and material sciences. In this work, the up-to-date most powerful table-top XUV source with 12.9 ± 3.9 mW in a single harmonic line at 26.5 eV is demonstrated via HHG of a frequency-doubled and post-compressed fibre laser. At the same time the spectrum supports a Fourier-limited pulse duration of sub-6 fs in the XUV, which allows accessing ultrafast dynamics with an order of magnitude higher photon flux than previously demonstrated. This concept will greatly advance and facilitate applications of XUV radiation in science and technology and enable photon-hungry ultrafast studies.

Abstract:Bright Ar quasimonochromatic K-shell x ray with very little background has been generated using an Ar clustering gas jet target irradiated with a 30 fs ultrahigh-contrast laser, with a measured flux of 2.2×10(11) photons/J into 4π. This intense x-ray source critically depends on the laser contrast and intensity. The optimization of source output with interaction length is addressed. Simulations point to a nonlinear resonant mechanism of electron heating during the early stage of laser interaction, resulting in enhanced x-ray emission. The x-ray pulse duration is expected to be only 10 fs, opening the possibility for single-shot ultrafast keV x-ray imaging applications.

Abstract:A high-energy, high-power ultrafast fiber laser system based on spatiotemporal coherent combination is presented. Bursts of eight subsequent chirped-pulse amplification (CPA)-stretched pulses are amplified simultaneously in 16 parallel ytterbium-doped rod-type amplifiers. After spatial and temporal coherent combination of the total 128 amplified pulse replicas into a single pulse, it is compressed in a partially protective-gas-filled CPA compressor. Finally, nearly Fourier-transform-limited pulses with an energy of 32 mJ and a duration of 158 fs are emitted with a repetition rate of 20 kHz and a close to diffraction-limited beam quality.

Abstract:The explosion in attosecond technology has opened the gate to investigating many unexplored areas which require ultrahigh spatial and temporal resolution. In the area of nuclear physics, using gamma-rays with ultrahigh resolution in time and space will help to investigate intra-nuclear dynamics in an unprecedentedly explicit way. However, the generation of ultrahigh brilliance attosecond gamma-ray pulses with current-generation laser facilities has not been reported. In this letter, we propose a novel method to generate high charge (~1nC) attosecond (<200 attosecond) electron bunch by the near-threshold self-injection in a wakefield accelerator. We demonstrate the ability to generate an ultrahigh-brilliance (> 2*1024 photons s-1mm-2mrad-2 per 0.1%BW) attosecond (<200 attosecond) gamma-ray (Emax > 3 MeV) pulse via nonlinear Compton scattering. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method reported to generate attosecond gamma-ray photon source using current-generation laser. This is the shortest gamma-ray photon and the highest brilliance photon source in MeV range (orders higher than the results reported). This method can be widely applied for experimental generation of 100 keV to several MeV high brilliance attosecond gamma-ray sources with current ~100 TW laser facilities, which will benefit basic science such as application in ultra-high resolution radiography.

Abstract:A high-brightness ultrabroadband supercontinuum white laser is desirable for various fields of modern science.Here,we present an intense ultraviolet-visible-infrared full-spectrum femtosecond laser source(with 300-5000 nm 25 dB bandwidth)with 0.54 mJ per pulse.The laser is obtained by sending a 3.9 μm,3.3 mJ mid-infrared pump pulse into a cascaded architecture of gas-filled hollow-core fiber,a bare lithium niobate crystal plate,and a specially designed chirped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal,under the synergic action of second and third order nonlinearities such as high harmonic generation and self-phase modulation.This full-spectrum femtosecond laser source can provide a revolutionary tool for optical spectroscopy and find potential applications in physics,chemistry,biology,material science,industrial processing,and environment monitoring.

Abstract:We present an ultrafast fiber laser system delivering 4.6 W average power at 258 nm based on two-stage fourth-harmonic generation in beta barium borate (BBO). The beam quality is close to diffraction limited with an M2- value of 1.3 x 1.6. The pulse duration is 150 fs, which potentially is compressible down to 40 fs. A plain BBO and a Sapphire-BBO compound are compared with respect to the achievable beam quality in the conversion process. This laser is applicable in scientific and industrial fields. Further scaling to higher average power is discussed

Abstract:Controlling femtosecond optical pulses with temporal precision better than one cycle of the carrier field has a profound impact on measuring and manipulating interactions between light and matter. We explore pulses that are carved from a continuous-wave laser via electro-optic modulation and realize the regime of sub-cycle optical control without a mode-locked resonator. Our ultrafast source, with a repetition rate of 10 GHz, is derived from an optical-cavity-stabilized laser and a microwave-cavity-stabilized electronic oscillator. Sub-cycle timing jitter of the pulse train is achieved by coherently linking the laser and oscillator through carrier-envelope phase stabilization enabled by a photonic-chip supercontinuum that spans up to 1.9 octaves across the near infrared. Moreover, the techniques we report are relevant for other ultrafast lasers with repetition rates up to 30 GHz and may allow stable few-cycle pulses to be produced by a wider range of sources.

Abstract:Summary form only given. In this paper, we present results of a three-stage Ti:sapphire laser amplification system that is designed to produce 1J pulses of 15 fs in duration. To date, the first two stages of amplification have produced 18 fs, 4 TW pulses at a repetition rate of 50 Hz and an average power 4 W. To our knowledge, these intermediate results represent the shortest terawatt pulses, the highest expansion ratio and the highest average power yet produced by any chirped pulse amplification system.

Abstract:A laser driven electron x-ray source (LEXS) using a high repetition rate, terawatt laser system is described. The laser system has adopted design features that make it more suitable for the generation of hard x-ray pulses. These features include a simplified pumping scheme to reduce cost and complexity, a lambda/4 broadband regenerative amplifier to support high-energy, short optical pulse generation, and a 50-Hz repetition rate to achieve both a desired pulse energy and a simple compressor design. Preliminary results on x-ray generation using this system are reported. A new method, ultrafast selected energy x-ray absorption spectroscopy (USEXAS), based on this LEXS is discussed.

Abstract:Collision between relativistic electron sheets and counterpropagating laser pulses is recognized as a promising way to produce intense attosecond x rays through coherent Thomson backscattering (TBS). In a double-layer scheme, the electrons in an ultrathin solid foil are first pushed out by an intense laser driver and then interact with the laser reflected off a second foil to form a high-density relativistic electron sheet with vanishing transverse momentum. However, the repulsion between these concentrated electrons can increase the thickness of the layer, reducing both its density and subsequently the coherent TBS. Here, we present a systematic study on the evolution of the flying electron layer and find that its resulting thickness is determined by the interplay between the intrinsic space-charge expansion and the velocity compression induced by the drive laser. How the laser driver, the target areal density, the reflector, and the collision laser intensity affect the properties of the produced x rays is explored. Multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations indicate that employing this scheme in the nonlinear regime has the potential to stably produce soft x rays with several gigawatt peak power in hundreds of terawatt ultrafast laser facilities. The pulse duration can be tuned to tens of attoseconds. Abstract:We present the generation of x-ray pulses with average pulse energies up to one millijoule and rms pulse durations down to the femtosecond level. We have produced these intense and short pulses by employing the fresh-slice multistage amplification scheme with a transversely tilted electron beam in a free-electron laser. In this scheme, a short pulse is produced in the first stage and later amplified by fresh parts of the electron bunch in up to a total of four stages of amplification. Our implementation is efficient, since practically the full electron beam contributes to produce the x-ray pulse. Our implementation is also compact, utilizing only 32 m of undulator. The demonstration was done at Athos, the soft x-ray beamline of SwissFEL, which was designed with high flexibility to take full advantage of the multistage amplification scheme. It opens the door for scientific opportunities following ultrafast dynamics using nonlinear x-ray spectroscopy techniques or avoiding electronic damage when capturing structures with a single intense pulse via single-particle imaging. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.035002 © 2024 American Physical Society
