Abstract:Nanometric CeO2-supported cobalt oxide materials with variable Co/Ce atomic ratios were prepared by the method of ultrasonic-assisted incipient-wetness impregnation. The catalytic behaviors of a series of CoOx/nmCeO2 catalysts have been studied for soot combustion. XRD, XPS, Raman, UV–vis DRS and FT-IR spectroscopy characterization results indicated that CoO or cobalt–cerium solid solutions were formed in the samples with the low Co loading amount, while Co3O4 was formed in the samples with high Co loading amount. CoOx/nmCeO2 catalysts can further promote soot combustion in contrast to nanometric CeO2. This improvement is related to the increase in the redox properties of the catalysts brought about by loading cobalt oxide on nanometric CeO2. The TPR experiment results under hydrogen atmosphere indicated that the presence of Co decreases the reduction temperature of catalyst from 555°C (nanometric CeO2) to 286°C (Co20/nmCeO2). On the other hand, attributing to nanoparticle effect and NO2 formation, Com/nmCeO2 oxide catalysts prepared in this study have very high activity for soot combustion. The best catalytic activity was obtained over Co20/nmCeO2 catalyst that T10, T50, T90 were 286°C, 368°C, 418°C, respectively, and SCO2m was 98.8%. Compared with the blank case (i.e., without catalyst) for soot combustion, T50 decreased by more than 200°C and SCO2m increased by 40% point. And this catalytic activity for the combustion of soot particle is as good as supported Pt catalysts, which is the best catalyst system so far reported for soot combustion under loose contact conditions. This temperature of soot combustion can ensure immediate activation of the catalyst on the filter under the conditions of diesel engine emissions.
Promote the Efficient Co-Combustion of Toluene & CO in Pt/CeO2 Catalyst: Orientally Adjusting the Oxidized SMSI to Optimize Acid Site and Oxygen Vacancy

Abstract:By effectively controlling the strong metal -support interaction (SMSI), the formation of acid sites and oxygen vacancies (O v ) on the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst was optimized. The efficient co -combustion of toluene and CO on Pt/ CeO 2 -450 was achieved. In the dual -pollutant system, when the conversion rate was 90 %, the corresponding conversion temperatures of toluene and CO were 165 degrees C and 173 degrees C, respectively. With the increase of SMSI, the catalytic activity of Pt/CeO 2 showed a trend of first increase and then decrease. This was proportional to the content of weak acid sites, medium acid sites, and O v generated on their surfaces. Compared with the combustion of a single pollutant, the result displays that toluene and CO had significant competitive adsorption on Pt/CeO 2 . The inhibition of toluene on CO also showed the same trend as the catalytic activity with the increase of SMSI. Under the double inhibition, Pt/CeO 2 exhibited preferential selectivity for toluene combustion. However, the in situ DRIFTS results showed that this competitive adsorption phenomenon did not interfere with the combustion reaction path. The co -combustion of toluene and CO follows independent reaction paths. This work provides valuable insights and ideas for realizing the development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts through SMSI regulation.

Abstract:Determining the migration rules of oxygen species in catalytic combustion, especially for catalysts composed of transition metal oxides, is essential yet challenging. This study hydrothermally synthesized nanosphere-structured cerium dioxide (CeO2) and its copper-loaded catalysts (Cu/CeO2) to identify the distinct functions of superficial oxygen species (O) and lattice oxygen (O2–). The presence of Cu-Ce solid solution at the Cu/CeO2 interface lowered the apparent activation energy for the catalytic combustion of propane and soot. The catalytic combustion of propane followed the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, with O2– serving as the dominant reactive phase while O played a subordinate role. The solid–solid reaction between soot and superficial oxygen of the catalyst was responsible for catalyzed soot combustion. The O species produced by surface defective sites exhibited higher activity than O2–, which drained easily at the beginning of the reactions. The isotopic oxygen exchange tests revealed the mechanism of metal oxide (CuO/CeO2) interactions for active oxygen species migration, with the results demonstrating the solid solution at the phase interface as portholes for oxygen migration, thus increasing oxygen mobility between the gaseous phase and the surface by lowering the migration activation energy. In situ, infrared results showed that the reaction path of soot catalytic combustion was single, without any intermediate production formation, compared to multiple paths in the propane oxidation process. This study provided an easily implemented and widely applicable method, which deepens our understanding of the characterization of the function and migration of predominant oxygen species in diverse combustion reactions involving oxide-based catalysts. Additionally, this study clarified differences and similarities between the reaction mechanisms of solid–solid and solid–gas catalysis.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) Co CoxCe1-xO delta oxides with different Co/Ce atomic ratios were synthesized by a colloidal crystal template (CCT) method. They show higher activity for soot combustion in O-2 than single CeO2 and Co3O4 under loose contact conditions. XRD, Raman, XPS, H-2-TPR and soot-TPR characterizations were carried out to study the surface and bulk oxygen vacancies and to correlate them to the activity. There exists electron transfer from Ce to Co in the matrix. Both Ce3+ and Co2+ species contribute importantly to the creation of surface and bulk oxygen vacancies, which determine the ignition and burnout temperatures of the catalysts, respectively. Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) catalysts doped with different metal ions were prepared by sol-gel or impregnation methods, and their catalytic activity for soot combustion was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Temperature-programmed reduction was used to investigate the influence of their redox properties on soot combustion performance. The results indicate that the oxidation temperature of soot can be significantly reduced using catalysts containing transition metals, which provide increased surface and lattice oxygen compared with undoped CeO2. The ability of each catalyst to deliver active oxygen at low temperature (200-400 degrees C) plays an important role in determining catalytic performance. However, incorporation of structure promoter, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals increase the delivery of active oxygen only at moderate temperature (above 400 degrees C), which accelerate the combustion rate of soot. Surface Adsorbed and Lattice Oxygen Activated by the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 Interface for Enhancive Catalytic Soot Combustion: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

Abstract:Metal oxide-oxide interface on supported catalyst has been rarely studied due to the complex interfacial structure and synthetic challenge. Herein, different Ag-supported CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 samples with various covered-state of CeO 2 were prepared for catalytic soot oxidation. In comparison, catalytic activity was significantly improved by grafting CeO 2 on Co 3 O 4 , in which the best performing Ag/CoCe-2 exhibited remarkable catalytic performance towards soot oxidation with a T 50 of 290.5°C under 10% O 2 /N 2 . Catalyst characterization investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), quasi in-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), in-situ Raman, etc. revealed that this outstanding promotion in catalytic activity can be principally ascribed to the formation of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface. An appropriate CeO 2 dosage maximized the contact and interaction between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 , resulting in the largest CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface featured with abundant generated superoxide species and activated surface lattice oxygen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also carried out for the oxygen vacancy formation energy, Gibbs free energy, etc. In presence of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface, a charge density redistribution around the adsorbed reactants at oxygen vacancies could be formed, owing to the efficient charge transfer enhanced by the electron-appealing effect. The change in electronic structure favored reducing the oxygen vacancy formation energy and boosting the lattice oxygen activation induced by the hybridized Co-O-Ce bonds, finally lowering the adsorption and activation barriers for reactive species and accelerating the reaction kinetics.

Abstract:In this work, the promoting effects of Cu on Ag-loaded CeO2 catalysts on soot oxidation were investigated through a series of Cu-incorporated catalysts (AgCu(x)Ce) with various amounts of Cu. Ag particles were highly dispersed over Cu(x)Ce mixed oxide, and AgCu(x)Ce catalysts presented improved activity in comparison to Ag/CeO2. Raman spectra and H2-TPR showed that the complex effects of the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions enhanced the ability to generate highly active superoxide (O2−) and greatly improved the reducibility of AgCu(x)Ce catalysts. The amount of Cu affected degrees of both the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions, and consequently, the ratio of active oxygen species (Oxn−) and the reducibility of the catalysts varied. AgCu(0.4)Ce with adequate surface oxygen vacancies promoted the generation of O2−, and the promoting effects enhanced the reducibility, resulting in greatly improved activity. It is suggested that introduction of Cu to Ag/CeO2 significantly improves the activity of the catalyst and that the optimized Cu content induces positive interrelations, whereas excessive Cu hinders the improvement in catalytic performance due to decreased synergistic effects between the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions.

The catalyst should possess both good oxidation ability and thermal stability because it sits after the engine. We present a novel high-performance DOC with high steam resistance and thermal stability. A selective dissolution method is adopted to modify the surface physicochemical environment of CeO2-SmMn2O5. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, and temperature-programmed desorption results reveal that surface Sm cations are partially removed with the exposure of more Mn4+ and Ce3+ cations and the presence of active surface oxygen species. This mechanism benefits the oxygen transformation from Ce to Mn and promotes the Ce3+ + Mn4+ <-> Ce4+ + Mn3+ redox cycle according to the in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformation spectroscopy results. Under laboratory-simulated diesel combustion conditions, the catalyst demonstrates excellent low-temperature oxidation catalytic activity (CO and C3H6 conversion: T-100 = 250 degrees C) compared to a Pt-based catalyst (CO and C3H6 conversion: T-100 = 310 degrees C) with a WHSV of 120,000 mL g(-1) h(-1). Specifically, NO conversion reaches 68% when the temperature is approximately 300 degrees C.

Abstract:CeO2–K catalysts supported on porous alumina substrate have been prepared by using a novel water-immiscible solvent. The advantage of this method is to load the catalyst onto the filter surface by one-time coating and prevent depositing the catalyst into the porous structure of support materials. The catalytic activities of the supported catalysts were evaluated by TPR system and the results showed that the pure CeO2 displayed a poor catalytic activity for soot oxidation, while the addition of K element into CeO2 would result in the formation of CeO2–K solid solution and significant enhancement of catalytic activity. Nevertheless, the variation of K content had a limited effect on soot ignition temperature. The catalyst with a Ce:K molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited an ignition temperature of about 330°C and the oxidation rates of about 0.16 and 0.28mgmin−1cm−2 at temperatures of 370 and 390°C, respectively.

Abstract:Surface coordination unsaturation cation in hydrotalcite-derived CoAl oxides is crucial to improve catalytic performance during soot combustion. Herein, the hydrotalcites-derived Co2-xNixAlO catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method. The characteristic nanosheet structure of hydrotalcite-derived CoAl oxides can promote mass transfer efficiency of the reactants. The cobalt elements partially replaced by nickel elements in hydrotalcite-derived CoAl oxides can induce the formation of coordination unsaturated cations and surface anion defects (oxygen vacancies) for increasing surface area and active site. The synergistic effect of binary Co and Ni ions in hydrotalcites-derived Co2-xNixAlO catalysts can boost adsorption-activation properties for O2 and NO. Hydrotalcites-derived Co2-xNixAlO catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performances for soot combustion, and their catalytic activity strongly depends on the synergistic effect of binary Co and Ni cations. Among the catalysts, Co1.5Ni0.5AlO catalyst has the highest catalytic activity (T50 = 333 °C, TOF = 1.01 × 10−2 s−1). Based on the characterization results, the catalytic mechanism for soot combustion is proposed: the synergistic effect of binary Co and Ni cations in Co2-xNixAlO catalysts can boost the key step of NO oxidation to NO2. The in-depth understanding on the synergistic effect of Co and Ni cations is meaningful for the development of the ternary hydrotalcite-derived catalysts for soot combustion.

Abstract:Copper doped ceria and ceria–zirconia mixed oxides were synthesized using the citric acid sol–gel method. The temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) results showed that the Cu modification improved the low-temperature activity and the selectivity to CO2 of ceria for soot oxidation in the presence of NO and excess oxygen even after ageing at 800°C for 20h in flow air. Meanwhile, not only the segregation of Cu and sintering of CuO, but also the separation of Ce- and Zr-rich phases worsened the activity of the Cu–Ce–Zr catalyst after the high-temperature calcination.
Enhanced Catalytic Combustion Performance of Toluene over a Novel Co–CeO x Monolith Catalyst

Abstract:To improve the catalytic combustion performance of toluene, a series of Co–CeOx monolith catalysts were synthesized by the citric acid sol–gel method. The results showed that the introduction of Co to CeO2 by the citric acid sol–gel method can effectively improve the catalytic performance in the reaction of toluene oxidation. Co1Ce2Ox with the molar ratio of Co to Ce being 1:2 showed optimal activity and reached T90 at 275 °C. In addition, Co1Ce2Ox exhibited excellent adaptability under the various space velocities and concentration conditions, and it also revealed good thermal stability. The physical and chemical properties of the as-prepared catalysts were investigated by various technologies. The results showed that the combination of Co and Ce could induce a strong interaction between Co3O4 nanoparticles and CeO2 nanoparticles, exerting a synergistic promoting effect on the formation of oxygen vacancies, which subsequently enhances the active oxygen mobility and improves the catalytic oxidation performance. Abstract:Cu-Ce based catalysts is an important type of catalyst due to its high activity, and the exploration of Cu-Ce synergistic effect is always on the focus. This study provides a new insight into the synergistic effect between copper and cerium based the toluene combustion properties over CuCeO x catalysts prepared with different methods. The catalyst synthesized by sol-gel method exhibits the best synergistic effect, and post calcination of the physically mixed catalyst can strengthen the formation of Cu-O-Ce solid solution. Under low temperature conditions (T<t 50, the T 50 refers the reaction temperatures corresponding to toluene conversion rates of 50% for each catalyst separately), the surface oxygen species caused by oxygen vacancies rather than Cu-O-Ce mainly dominate the catalytic activity. The Cu-O-Ce interface synergistic effect is the key factor to determine the complete conversion efficiency at high temperature (T>T 50 ). Abstract:The Cu- and Mn-doped ceria were prepared using the citric acid sol–gel method. The structural and redox properties of the mixed oxides were investigated by means of XRD, BET, O2-TPD, CO-TPR and CO reduction under isothermal conditions. TPO tests were performed to evaluate the catalytic activity for soot oxidation. The results showed that Mnx+ cations entered into the ceria lattice to form solid solutions, which increased the amount of oxygen vacancies and promoted surface oxygen chemisorption. CuxO clusters were more likely to be dispersed on the surface of ceria particles. The interaction between copper and cerium greatly enhanced the rapid release of lattice oxygen of the oxides in the reducing atmosphere. These two mixed oxides showed improved catalytic activities and selectivities to CO2 for soot oxidation compared with pure ceria. The order of activities under different contact conditions was believed to be related to active oxygen species released by the catalysts.

Abstract:Shape-controlled CeO2 nano-rods (CeO2-R), CeO2 nano-cubes (CeO2-C) and CeO2 nano-octahedrons (CeO2-O) were prepared as support of Ag/CeO2 for soot combustion. Ag/CeO2-C is more active than Ag/CeO2-R and Ag/CeO2-O, even with the presence of water, whose TOF value is 7.7, 11.4 times of Ag/CeO2-R and Ag/CeO2-O, respectively. The chemical state of Ag and the ability in oxygen activation is controlled by the support morphology through the interaction between Ag and CeO2. The weak interaction makes Ag in form of metallic state on Ag/CeO2-C which has better contact extent with soot than Ag oxides. Meanwhile, a high concentration of bulk oxygen vacancies on Ag/CeO2-C is also formed which efficiently provide active oxygen species by oxygen reverse spillover. It also explores a new pathway boosting soot combustion. As for CeO2-R and CeO2-O, although the introduced Ag improves the surface reducibility on CeO2, similar oxygen desorption behavior with the introduction of Ag reveals the unchanged way in oxygen activation and reaction pathway in soot combustion.

Abstract:To solve the soot elimination and optimize catalyst diesel particulate filter (CDPF) regeneration strategies, a series of Mn-Ce catalysts with different Mn/(Mn+Ce) molar ratios are successfully synthetized by hydrothermal method and the complete catalytic oxidation of diesel engine soot are investigated. Compare to CeO2 and MnO2, the catalytic promotion on soot combustion of Mn-Ce catalysts is more excellent by thermogravimetric experiments due to their better ability to activate oxygen species, which is consistent with results in characterization analysis. Among as-prepared catalysts, MC-0.40 has the best catalytic activity with the lowest starting temperature (Ts ), peak temperature (Tp ) and largest comprehensive combustion index (S) both in O2/N2 and NO/O2/N2 atmosphere. Influence factors on catalytic performance are studied. Weight ratios of soot/MC-0.40 catalyst are suitable at the range of 1:9–1:13, which makes soot combustion more easily. Ashes in the reaction process show adverse effects due to their ability to increase ignition point by inhibit heat and oxygen transfer. Mn-Ce catalysts are more sensitive and show better catalytic activity in NO atmosphere because of generations of abundant adsorbed species and NO adsorption/desorption. The three consecutive cycles of MC-0.40 catalyst are performed to study the catalytic stability, and thermogravimetric curves show that the potential reusability of MC-0.40 catalyst can be relatively accepted in soot combustion.

Abstract:Herein, a series of Co x -CeO 2 nanosheet catalysts were elaborately synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The CeO 2 microsphere with crossed nanosheets can improve the soot-catalyst contact efficiency and the lattice substitution of Co ions for cerium sites in CeO 2 results in the oriented lattice bending of Co-CeO 2 nanosheets for improving adsorption/activation properties of NO and O 2 . Co 2 -CeO 2 catalyst displays the highest H 2 O-tolerance activity ( T 50 = 334 o C, TOF = 1.32 h -1 ) and excellent stability during soot oxidation in the presence of H 2 O. Combined with characterizations and DFT calculations, the mechanism was proposed: the active edge sites located at the oriented lattice bending of Co-CeO 2 nanosheets can activate surface oxygen and gaseous O 2 , and active oxygen species can boost NO oxidation to NO 2 , which is a crucial step of NO x -assistant catalytic mechanism for soot oxidation. It provides a promising way for the rational design of high-performance non-noble metal catalysts for soot oxidation in practical applications.
