Abstract:In this work, beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er upconversion (UC) film was successfully prepared on silicon (Si) substrate via self-assemble method for the first time. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the UC film were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA), X-ray power diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. To investigate the effects of KH-560 primer film and chemical reactions on the UC luminescence properties of beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er UC film, decay profiles of the 540 nm and 655 nm radiations were measured. Furthermore, tribological test was applied to qualitatively evaluate the adhesion of the UC film. The results indicate that the UC film has been successfully prepared on Si substrate by covalent chemical bonds. This work provides a facile way to synthesize beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er UC film with robust adhesion to the substrate, which can be applicable for other UC films. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.
Hexadecylpyridinium Chloride Mediated Hydrothermal Synthesis of NaYF₄:Yb, Er Nanocrystal and Their Luminescent Properties

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals with uniform size and hydrophilic surface have potential applications in biological medical engineering. In this study, hydrophilic NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres were synthesized via hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mediated hydrothermal process. The synthesized NaYF₄:Yb, Er upconversion nanospheres (UCNSs) were characterized by various characterization methods. Results showed that the synthesized UCNSs exhibited a uniform sphere-like structure with average diameter of ~250 nm. The surface of UCNSs was captured by CPC molecule indicating hydrophilic properties of UCNSs. The spherical UCNSs composed of mixed phase (α+β) NaYF₄ nanocrystals. This is the novel study for synthesis of NaYF₄:Ln3+ crystal employing CPC as ligand. Moreover, the effect of CPC concentration on synthesis of UCNSs was investigated by comparatively studying morphology, crystal phase and luminescent properties of desired sample prepared under different experimental conditions. It was found that high concentrations of CPC ligands were more favorable for forming NaYF₄ crystal nanospheres with morphology that is more regular, have smoother surface, with higher crystallinity and better upconversion fluorescent properties. The possible growing mechanism was proposed and growing of NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres followed the classical Ostwald ripening process.
Fabrication of Core/shell Structured NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+/polyphosphazene Upconversion Nanophosphors Functionalized with Abundant Active Amino Groups

Abstract:Here we report the synthesis of highly cross-linked organic–inorganic hybrid polymer protected NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) with efficient NIR-to-visible upconversion luminescence. Hexagonal UCNCs with uniform size and efficient upconversion performance were synthesized via a solvothermal approach. In-situ polycondensation between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) was conducted on the surface of UCNCs to form highly cross-linked organic–inorganic hybrid polymer shell. The results from this study revealed that the novel core/shell structured nanophosphors not only maintained efficient upconversion fluorescence, but also gained good water dispersability, chemical modification ability of the surface because of the abundant amino groups tagged on the surfaces of the polyphosphazene shell. The content of amino groups on the surface can reached as high as 69μmol/g.

Abstract:Rare earth-doped fluorides with strong up-conversion (UC) luminescence have attracted growing attention due to their potential applications in photonics and biological areas. However, current techniques to process these fluorides into thin films have not been sufficiently developed. Here, we report for the first time the preparation of NaYF4 thin film doped with Yb3+, and Tm3+ by electro-deposition and subsequent annealing. The as-deposited thin film was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and photoluminescence. Under excitation by a near infrared laser diode at 980 nm, the transparent NaYF4: Yb-Tm thin film exhibits bright visible upconversion luminescence from Tm3+ as a result of energy transfer from Yb3+. The results demonstrate that the electro-deposition process provides facile access to UC fluoride thin films which may have applications in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:We carried out the solvothermal synthesis of UCNPs with the core/shell structure NaYF4:Yb3+:Er3+/NaYF4 and analyzed their photoluminescent properties depending on the nanoparticle size and preparative synthesis conditions. It has been shown that intensity and lifetime of the photoluminescence of the upconversion nanophosphors depend on the intensity of laser excitation, size of the nanoparticles and presence of an inert shell. Upon the formation of an inert shell on the surface of NaYF4:Yb3+:Er3+ nanoparticles the conversion efficiency of visible and NIR radiation in different spectral regions can increase by more than an order of magnitude due to shielding of luminescent centers from nonradiative losses at surface defects.
Synthesis and Upconversion Luminescence of High-Quality Water-Soluble NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ Nanoclusters

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ nanoclusters were prepared using a facile solvothermal method. The structures and morphologies of the products were investigated using an X-ray powder diffractometer and a transmission electron microscope. Modified by the capping agent of poly(acrylic acid), the as-prepared NaYF4 NCs show excellent water solubility. Under 980-nm excitation, the aqueous solution of the sample displayed a bright green upconversion (UC) fluorescence. The luminescence dynamics were further studied based on the UC excitation pathways and the emission processes. Such water soluble UC samples may find application in the field of biological imaging.

Abstract:Hexagonal NaYF₄:Nd/Yb/Er microcrystals and nanocrystals with well-defined morphologies and sizes have been synthesized via a hydrothermal route. The rational control of initial reaction conditions can not only result in upconversion (UC) micro and nanocrystals with varying morphologies, but also can produce enhanced and tailored upconversion emissions from the Yb/Er ion pairs sensitized by the Nd ions. The increase of reaction time converts the phase of NaYF₄:Nd/Yb/Er particles from the cubic to the hexagonal structure. The added amount of oleic acid plays a critical role in the shape evolution of the final products due to their preferential attachment to some crystal planes. The adjustment of the molar ratio of F/Ln can range the morphologies of the β-NaYF₄:Nd/Yb/Er microcrystals from spheres to nanorods. When excited by 808 nm infrared laser, β-NaYF₄:Nd/Yb/Er microplates exhibit a much stronger UC emission intensity than particles with other morphologies. This phase- and morphology-dependent UC emission holds promise for applications in photonic devices and biological studies.

Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have drawn much attention in the past decade due to their superior physicochemical features and great potential in biomedical. However, practical applications of upconversion luminescence are often limited by its relatively low luminescence efficiency. In this paper, we designed and synthesized NaYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles using a hydrothermal approach, and thereafter it was coated with a thin layer of graphitic carbon to form a core/shell nanostructure via a controlled chemical vapor deposition process. It is shown that Yb and Er doped in the crystal of NaYF4 in the forms ofYb(3+) and Er3+. The thickness of the graphitic carbon shell is close to 0.45 nm, and this corresponds between one and two atomic layers. The graphitic carbon shell not only leads to a significant enhancement in the emission intensity but also provide a longer luminescence decay lifetime compared to bare NaYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles. Our finding provides a new strategy to remarkably improve fluorescence upconversion, and opportunities for diverse applications requiring high fluorescence intense.

Abstract:Water-soluble NaYF4:Yb/Er@NaLuF4:Yb up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) with a strong green emission were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method in a short period of time and at a low temperature. First, the hydrophobic UCNPs were prepared by a simple solvothermal method, then modified using a polyetherimide (PEI) surfactant or oxidation of the oleic acid ligands with the Lemieux-von Rudloff reagent. The modified UCNPs, having an average particle diameter of 60 ± 5 nm, showed a high dispersity. The oleic acid ligand on the sample surface was oxidized azelaic acid (HOOC(CH2)7COOH), identified from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which results in the generation of free carboxylic acid, hence conferring a high solubility in water. The 3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method and cell-targeted labeling proved that oleic acid-capped UCNPs after oxidation (UCNPs-OAO) have a higher biocompatibility than polyetherimide-capped UCNPs (UCNPs-PEI). Therefore, the UCNPs-OAO have a great potential in biomedical applications, such as multimodal imaging, targeted therapy, and gene therapy.

Abstract:Near infrared (NIR)-to-visible upconversion nanoparticles of pure hexagonal phase beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by a high boiling temperature organic phase synthesis strategy in oleic acid (OA), which acted as a ligand. The upconversion photoluminescence intensity of the nanocrystals was modulated by varying the reaction temperature and the concentration of sensitizer Yb3+ ions and activator Er3+ ions. The prepared nanocrystals were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. All the results show that the as-prepared monodispersed upconversion nanocrystals emit high photoluminescence when excited by a 980 nm laser. It was found that the up-conversion emission spectra of beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ presented three peaks at about 655, 540, and 521 nm. The optimized concentrations of the sensitizer Yb3+ and the activator Er3+ are 20% and 2% mmol, respectively. These highly efficient nanocrystals have exhibited great potential in bioimaging and photoelectronic devices.
Synthesis of LiYF4:Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles and its fluorescence properties

Abstract:LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of multiple trifluoroacetic acid salts. The SEM and TEM results show the size of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is about 100 nm in diagonal line, and the morphology of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is highly uniform with octahedral structure. Under the excitation of 980 nm, the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have higher upconversion luminescence efficiency compared with that of NaYF4:Yb, Er. The results indicate that the as-prepared LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles may have potential applications in bio-probes and displays.

Abstract:Yb3+ and Er3+ ions co-doped α-NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid (CA) as chelating ligand and NaNO3 as mineralizer. The influences of the CA/RE (RE = Y+Yb+ Er) molar ratio, reaction time, reaction temperature and the NaNO3/RE molar ratio on the crystal phases and shapes of as-prepared products have been well investigated. The possible formation mechanism has been discussed in detail and an aggregation growth theory has been proposed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the products. Under 980 nm excitation, the emission intensities of the as-prepared nanocrystals were much stronger than that of the nanocrystals modified by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Additionally, the as-prepared products maintained spherical shape and high degree of monodispersion, which is expected to be suggestive for the preparation of other complex rare earth fluoride compounds.
Controlled Synthesis of Monodisperse Hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb/Er Nanocrystals with Ultrasmall Size and Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence

Abstract:The ability to synthesize upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) with tailored upconversion luminescence and controlled size is of great importance for biophotonic applications. However, until now, limited success has been met to prepare bright, ultrasmall, and monodispersed β-NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs. In this work, we report on a synthetic method to produce monodisperse hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals of ultrasmall size (5.4 nm) through a precise control of the reaction temperature and the ratio of Na⁺/Ln3+/F-. We determined the optimum activator concentration of Er3+ to be 6.5 mol % for these UCNCs, yielding about a 5-fold higher upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity than the commonly used formula of NaYF₄:30% Yb3+/2% Er3+. Moreover, a thin epitaxial shell (thickness, 1.9 nm) of NaLnF₄ (Ln = Y, Gd, Lu) was grown onto these ultrasmall NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs, enhancing its UCL by about 85-, 70- and 50-fold, respectively. The achieved sub-10-nm core and core-shell hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs with enhanced UCL have strong potential applications in bioapplications such as bioimaging and biosensing.
Synthesis of NaYF4 and NaLuF4 Based Upconversion Nanocrystals and Comparison of Their Properties

Abstract:In this study, four kinds of upconversion nanocrystals (UCNs) have been successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The morphology, crystalline phase, composition, grain size, upconversion luminescence and cell image of the UCNs were investigated. The properties of the NaLuF4-based UCNs were compared with the counterparts of NaYF4-based UCNs. It is found that the NaLuF4-based UCNs are apt to form hexagonal phase structures, while NaYF4-based UCNs of NaYF4:Yb, Er and NaYF4:Gd, Yb, Er are cubic and hexagonal phases respectively. The upconversion emission intensities of the NaLuF4-based UCNs are higher than that of NaYF4-based UCNs, and Gd3+ presented UCNs are higher than that of Gd3+ absented UCNs. The bioimaging application of NaLuF4:Gd, Yb, Er shows that bright upconversion luminescence can be observed when UCNs-labeled HeLa cells are excited with 980 nm light.
A facile hydrothermal synthesis of highly luminescent NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ upconversion nanoparticles and their biomonitoring capability

Abstract:Using a facile hydrothermal procedure, hydrophilic NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared as lanthanide-doped upconversion (UC) materials exhibiting different morphologies, crystal phases and luminescence intensity. The upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) were characterized by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence analysis. The molar concentration of reactants and volumes of NaF affect the shapes and uniformity of the synthesized NPs. These parameters also have influence on crystal phase and luminescence intensity of the NPs. Adjusting hydrothermal reaction time and dopant concentration also enable the synthesis of NPs with strong UC luminescence. The as-prepared UCNP showed cellular nontoxicity to HeLa cells, and thus they are capable as promising agents for biological imaging.
Optimization of the Structure, Morphology and Luminescent Properties of NaYF4 Upconversion Nanoparticles

Abstract:We designed and constructed rare earth doped upconversion nanoparticles (3 - Na(Y 0.78 Yb 0.18 Er 0.04 )F 4 , sensitizing layer encapsulated (3 -Na(Y 0.9 Er 0.1 )F 4 @ (3 -NaYbF 4 and inert layer encapsulated (3 -Na(Y 0 . 9 Er 0 . 1 )F 4 @ (3 -NaYbF 4 @ (3 -NaYF 4 . Compared with the mononuclear material, the luminescence intensity of the particles encapsulated with double shells in the three main bands of blue, green and red emissions increased by 346, 22, and 54 times respectively. While improving the upconversion luminescence performance, the underlying reasons for this improvement were analyzed in detail. The effects of shell coating on the fluorescence lifetime, thermal stability and energy level transition are discussed. On this basis, the composite film material was constructed by combining the shell coating strategy and the plasma resonance interaction strategy, which further improved the upconversion efficiency. In addition, by combining performance optimized upconversion particles with information coding, we explored its potential as an anti-counterfeiting material. Abstract:Poor water-solubility and biocompatibility are the biggest obstacles for the bioapplications of upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs). In this work, a facile solvothermal approach was developed for the one-pot synthesis of monodisperse and water-soluble β-NaYF4 UCNPs by employing poly(acrylic acid, sodium salt) (PAAs) as the capping reagent. The as-prepared UCNPs were thoroughly characterized and a possible reaction mechanism is proposed, which indicates that PAAs plays a crucial role for the shape and phase evolution of the NaYF4 UCNPs. More importantly, each multidentate PAA can tightly bind to the UCNPs surface through multiple –COO− groups, while an abundance of uncoordinated carboxyl groups on the polymer chain extend into the solution, making the UCNPs highly water-soluble. The presence of free carboxyl groups on the surfaces also facilitates the conjugation of the UCNPs with various biomolecules, which paves the way for further bio-applications. As a proof-of-concept model, transferrin was covalently linked to β-NaYF4:Yb,Er to form the transferrin–UCNPs conjugates, which have been successfully applied to the high-contrast fluorescent imaging and detection of HeLa cells. Possessing the advantages of good biocompatibility and inherent high upconversion efficiency, our directly synthesized β-NaYF4 UCNPs exhibit great potential as excellent bio-probes for in vitro or in vivo imaging, detection and diagnosis.

The influence of kinds of external conditions, including reaction time, initial reaction solution pH value, organic solvents codoping, and Na+ concentration on crystalline phase, size, morphology and especially luminescent property are systematically studied and the possible formation mechanism based on PH values is emphatically proposed. The products of NaYbF4 with various morphologies range from nanospheres, microprisms, microdisks, hexagonal crown-capped shapes, hexagonal clam-like shapes and hexagonal flower-like shapes were successfully prepared. The results show that the up-conversion luminescence property is positively correlated with the slenderness ratio. Solvents codoping and Na+ concentration can greatly improve the luminescence property, especially for red emission. Impressively, the emission colors and intensities might be finely tuned through finely tuning the PH values, solvents co-doping and Na+ dosage. Furthermore, this study will be expected to contribute to the synthesis of various morphologies and improving the UC intensity of lanthanide doped crystals.
