Abstract:The inversion of airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data is an ill‐posed problem with considerable ambiguity However, the priori information about the geoelectric section obtained by geological or other geophysical methods can be used to not only reduce the ambiguity but also improve the stability and reliability of the inversion. Consequently, it is important to study an inversion algorithm with bound constraints provided by the priori information. For this purpose, a limited‐memory quasi‐Newton (LMQN) method with bound constraints has been applied in this paper to invert fixed‐wing airborne transient electromagnetic multi‐component data and to stably interpret a multi‐layered model with a large sample dataset. The regularization inversion formulae of the response data using LMQN optimization algorithm have been derived first and then the implementation of such a technique is described in detail in this paper. Finally, a multi‐layered model is used to test the method and the effects of the inversion for different levels of noise added in the synthetic data, different weighting of constraint model and different range limits of constrained resistivity are compared and analyzed. The inversion results show that a stable and effective inversion result can be obtained for different levels of noise added in data and different kinds of restraint applied in the algorithm. The inversion results of various kinds of restraint show that the convergent velocity of the inversion iteration and the reliability of inversion result can be improved by means of selecting the weighting matrix of constrained model as well as setting the range limit of constrained bound to add the possible priori information into the inversion calculation. If the constrained bound or the feasible region includes the real value of the layered resistivity parameter, the smaller the feasible region is, the better inversion effect and the faster convergence rate will be obtained.
