Abstract:Nanowires (NWs) are one of the fundamental building blocks for nanoscale devices, and have been frequently utilized as mechanical resonators. Earlier studies show that ultra-sensitive vectorial sensing toolkits can be fabricated by changing the flexural mode of NWs to oscillation doublets along two orthogonal directions. Based on in silico studies and the Timoshenko beam theory, this work finds that the dual orthogonal flexural mode of NWs can be effectively controlled through the proper selection of their growth direction. It is found that metallic NWs with a directional-independent shear modulus possess a single flexural mode. However, NWs with a directional-dependent shear modulus naturally exhibit flexural mode doublets, which do not disappear even with increasing slenderness ratio. Further studies show that such a feature generally exists in other NWs, such as Si NWs. Mimicking a pendulum configuration as used in NW-based scanning force microscopy, the cantilevered < 110 > Si NW demonstrates zeptogram mass resolution and a force sensitivity down to the order of 10(-24) N Hz(-1/2) (yN Hz(-1/2)) in both transverse directions. The findings in this work open up a new and facile avenue to fabricate 2D vectorial force sensors, which could enable ultra-sensitive and novel detection devices/systems for 2D effects, such as the anisotropy strength of atomic bonds.

Abstract:Nanoantennas have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities for manipulating the intensity and direction of light emission over a broad frequency range. The directional beam steering offered by nanoantennas has important applications in areas including microscopy, spectroscopy, quantum computing and on-chip optical communication. Although both the physical principles and experimental realizations of directional linear nanoantennas has become increasingly mature, angular control of nonlinear radiation using nanoantennas has not been explored yet. Here we propose a novel concept of nonlinear Yagi-Uda nanoantenna to direct second harmonic radiation from a metallic nanosphere. By carefully tuning the spacing and dimensions of two lossless dielectric elements, which function respectively as a compact director and reflector, the second harmonic radiation is deflected 90 degrees with reference to the incident light (pump) direction. This abnormal light-bending phenomenon is due to the constructive and destructive interference between the second harmonic radiation governed by a special selection rule and the induced electric dipolar and magnetic quadrupolar radiation from the two dielectric antenna elements. Simultaneous spectral and spatial isolation of scattered second harmonic waves from incident fundamental waves pave a new way towards nonlinear signal detection and sensing.
Resonator-fed High-order Patch Antenna with Bandwidth Enhancement and Adjacent Mode Suppression

Abstract:A resonator feeding method is proposed in this paper to enhance the bandwidth and suppress the adjacent modes of a square patch antenna under operation of TM 03 mode. The radiating patch is loaded with three slots for sidelobe reduction, and it is coupled to a half-wavelength resonator beneath, which is fed by a probe. On the one hand, the feeding resonator helps to generate an additional resonant mode, and thus widens the operating bandwidth. On the other hand, the feeding structure can effectively suppress the adjacent TM 20 , TM 21 , TM 22 and TM 23 modes, and this can contribute to more selective and stable gain performance. The simulated results show that a maximum gain of 14.3 dBi has been realized and the bandwidth is broadened from 1.8% to 3.6%.

Abstract:In this paper, a compound multimode printed loop antenna based on degraded spilt-ring resonators (SRRs) for broadband wireless applications is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of an outer split ring and one inner closed ring with a big difference in size, which can be considered as degraded SRRs. By virtue of the orthogonal radiating mode of two rings, the compound multimode loop antenna can achieve multi-band resonances. Collaborating with the two coupled rings, a parasitic strip is placed close to the feed gap of the inner ring, which not only induces a new resonant frequency at upper band but also greatly improves the impedance matching in all high-frequency bands. The proposed antenna not only covers the first split ring mode at 816 MHz but also exhibits a broadband property covering from 2.3 to 4.6 GHz (reflection coefficient |S11| <; -10 dB, 67% fractional bandwidth). The antenna operational principle and physical mechanism are analyzed by carrying out the studies of mode analysis and surface current distribution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed antenna, an antenna prototype is fabricated and tested. It is numerically and experimentally proved that broadband and multimode characteristics, stable radiation patterns with a peak gain of 1.2 and 5.1 dBi in the lowand high-frequency bands respectively, and more than 80% efficiency can be achieved. With merits of a compact size of 0.12λ0 x 0.11λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength at the lowest operating frequency), uniplanar and simple printed structure and wide bandwidth characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of wireless applications.

Abstract:Recently, localized spoof surface plasmon polaritons (LSSPPs) have emerged as a new research frontier due to their unique properties and potential applications in integrated circuits. The toroidal dipole is a localized electromagnetic response different from electric and magnetic dipoles. Anapole is the nonradiating source produced by the interference between identical radiation patterns of toroidal and electric dipoles in the far field. This paper proposes a novel high Q-factor compact planar resonator consisting of split-ring resonators to support the LSSPPs anapole at microwave frequency, which shows an apparent nonradiating charge-current configuration. In simulation and measurement, we observe the nonradiating property of the anapole mode. Further, we demonstrate that the LSSPPs anapole resonance has the tunable property, which is very sensitive to structural changes. These might lead to potential applications in the design of plasmonic deformation sensors, cloaking, and absorbers.
Resonant bowtie aperture nano-antenna for the control of optical nanocavities resonance

Abstract:Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) has been successful in finely tuning the optical properties of photonic crystal (PC) nanocavities. The SNOM nanoprobes proposed so far allowed for either redshifting or blueshifting the resonance peak of the PC structures. In this Letter, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of redshifting (up to +0.65nm) and blueshifting (up to $-5$~nm) PC cavity resonance with a single SNOM probe. This probe is obtained by opening a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) at the apex of a metal-coated tip. This double-way PC tunability is the result of a competition between the effects of the BNA resonance (induced electric dipole leading to a redshift) and the metal-coated tip (induced magnetic dipole giving rise to a blueshift) onto the PC mode volume. The sign of the spectral shift is modified by simply controlling the tip-to-PC distance. This study opens the way to the full postproduction control of the resonance wavelength of high quality factor optical cavities.

Abstract:We investigate the use of coupled silicon nanobeam cavities for achieving multiple resonances as a photonic dedicated platform for nonlinear signal processing and sensing. The transmission spectra of the triple-coupled cavities were measured, and high quality factors, up to about 80,000, have been experimentally reported. By precisely varying the positions of three cavities vertically and horizontally, evolutions of the supermodes were fully mapped, in good agreement with the simulation designs. Some specific and interesting properties such as the dark state of the system, leading to unique transmission spectra, have been clearly observed. Based on a geometrical control of the structure, the three resonances can be tuning independently, and degeneracy modes emerge in some configurations when the distance parameters are properly chosen. This triple-resonant device is expected to enable the adjustment of third-order nonlinear properties in silicon photonics, and it is also a candidate for sensing or reconfigurable and programmable photonics. Abstract:We present a detailed quasinormal mode analysis of gold bowtie nanoantennas, and highlight the unusual role of the substrate and the onset of multi-mode behaviour. In particular, we show and explain why the directional radiatiave beta factor is completely dominated by emission into the substrate, and explain how the beta factors and quenching depend on the underlying mode properties. We also quantitatively explain the generalized Purcell factors and explore the role of gap size and substrate in detail. These rich modal features are essential to understand for future applications such as sensing, lasing, and quantum information processing, for example in the design of efficient single photon emitters.

Abstract:A novel kind of circular polarization and dual-frequency linear polarization microstrip antennas is proposed. The designs are based on the anisotropic property of the complementary split ring resonator. When the complementary split ring resonator is etched on the patch of the probe-fed microstrip antenna, the gap orientation asymmetric or symmetric to the current propagating direction will render the antenna to radiate circular polarization waves or dual-frequency linear polarization waves. Details of the experimental results compared with the simulated results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:The bowtie antenna is a topic of growing interest in recent years. In this paper, we design, fabricate, and characterize a modified gold bowtie antenna integrated on a transparent glass substrate. We numerically investigate the antenna characteristics, specifically its resonant frequency and enhancement factor. We simulate the dependence of resonance frequency on bowtie geometry, and verify the simulation results through experimental investigation, by fabricating different sets of bowtie antennas on glass substrates utilizing CMOS compatible processes and measuring their resonance frequencies. Our designed bowtie antenna provides a strong broadband electric field enhancement in its feed gap. The far-field radiation pattern of the bowtie antenna is measured, and it shows dipole-like characteristics with large beam width. Such a broadband antenna will be useful for a myriad of applications, ranging from wireless communications to electromagnetic wave detection.

Abstract:The present work studies the design of a high impedance surface (HIS)-based bowtie antenna in the framework of characteristic mode analysis (CMA) and proposes the method of higher order mode suppression. A triangular-elliptical bowtie antenna operating in the frequency range of 1.6–6 GHz is designed. The radiating and higher order modes of the proposed antenna are identified using CMA, and an HIS structure is used to enhance the desired mode and to suppress the higher order mode in order to get high gain, good front-to-back ratio (FBR), and stable radiation characteristics. The final designed HIS-based bowtie antenna gives stable radiation patterns from 1.7 to 5.5 GHz with a maximum boresight gain of 10.5 dB. Also, gain from 6.5 to 12 dB and FBR from 8 to 18 dB are obtained in the operating bandwidth. The proposed antenna features the advantages of low profile, wideband and high boresight gain making it suitable for ground-penetrating radar applications.

Abstract:Taking inspiration from small creatures like geckos and flies, which exhibit directional hearing through the coherent coupling of acoustic waves between closely spaced ears, the study seeks to design compact RF directional sensors with deep subwavelength spacing. The proposed design method is helpful for the advancement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), microrobots, and microsystems. Directional radiofrequency (RF) sensing, also known as radio direction finding, is essential in various applications that involve localizing RF sources. However, existing RF sensing technologies face challenges due to their large antenna sizes and complex RF signal processing circuits, which hinder the realization of miniaturized subwavelength direction sensors. In this article, a non‐Hermitian broadside coupled split ring resonators (BC‐SRRs) are presented, which can identify the direction of an incident RF signal with angles ranging from 0° to 180°. The non‐Hermitian Hamiltonian of the system, which can be interpreted by the temporal coupled mode theory, gives rise to asymmetric resonant modes of the BC‐SRRs. The asymmetry allows the direct measurement of RF wave incident angle by probing the resonant strength of the two BC‐SRRs. For the proof of concept, a one‐stage Dickson voltage multiplier is employed to rectify the RF signals and demonstrate angle sensing ability by relating the rectified voltage to the incident angle. The results showcase the potential of the proposed technique using non‐Hermitian BC‐SRRs as a pathway toward subwavelength antenna‐based radio direction finding.

Abstract:In this work, a novel cavity backed leaf-shaped bowtie antenna is designed using Characteristic Mode Analysis (CMA). An analytical expression is proposed to arrive at the leaf shape of the bowtie antenna using optimization process. The developed antenna is backed by a square-cavity to get unidirectional radiation pattern with high gain and good front-to-back-ratio characteristics. CMA technique is used in the design and optimization of the cavity structure and generalized design equation is proposed to design the cavity for getting good impedance bandwidth and broadside radiation characteristics in the Desired Band of Interest (DBI). The developed antenna resonates from 0.8 to 4.3 GHz with stable and unidirectional radiation characteristics giving maximum gain and FBR of 11.5 dBi and 15.2 dB respectively, making it suitable for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) applications.

Abstract:We calculate the resonant properties of the sandwiched triangle and bowtie antennas using finite difference time domain technique and compare with one-layer structures. The sandwiched antennas possess two tunable resonances corresponding to the symmetric and antisymmetric modes for dipole excitation, which can be understood by the hybridization of the plasmons supported by the two golden layers of the antennas. We obtain a giant field enhancement and a full width at half maximum as larger as 385nm for the sandwiched bowtie antenna.

Abstract:This work proposes a new broadband ultra-high frequency tag antenna with a pair of interconnected Split Ring Resonators. By using a pair of interconnected Split Ring Resonators, a new resonant mode adjacent to the origin mode is excited and a broadband characteristic is achieved. The bandwidth (VSWR<;1.23) of the proposed antenna is 170 MHz from 810 to 980 MHz and it covers all the global UHF RFID frequency bands. The proposed structure not only successfully widens the tag operating bandwidth but also enjoys small size. The proposed antenna also has the advantages of simple structure, low cost, and easy to manufacture.

Abstract:Broadside-Coupled Split Ring Resonators This cover image features non-Hermitian broadside-coupled split ring resonators (BC-SRRs) that can identify the direction of a radio-frequency (RF) source (the luminous body at the center of a spherical wave). When an RF signal is incident upon the BC-SRRs at a specific angle, the resulting resonance responses of the two BC-SRRs exhibit varying strengths due to non-Hermitian coupling. This angular dependence of resonance strength difference, observed as the incident angle ranges from 0° to 180°, holds immense promise for applications such as microrobot positioning, automatic navigation, and robotic arm control. Abstract:The plasmonic nanoantenna has attracted intensive attention over the last decades owing to its unique optical response. Although various nanoantennas have been designed, so far very few efforts have been devoted to their dynamic tunability. Here we present a study on dynamically tunable bowtie nanoantennas integrated on a vanadium dioxide thin film with a thermal phase transition. The insulator-metal transition of vanadium dioxide changes its electric feature and permittivity; hence, the resonance of the bowtie nanoantennas is actively tuned by varying the temperature of the device. Further, by adjusting the gap of the bowtie and the edge size of the nanotriangle at a different temperature, the shift of the resonant wavelength of the nanoantenna has been found to increase for a larger triangle edge size, but less dependent on the gap width. The features suggest that VO2-integrated nanoantennas may have applications in dynamically tunable high-harmonic generation, single-molecule fluorescence enhancement, and nanolasers.
