Abstract:Numerical simulations are presented of steady state, hypersonic flows for the prediction of multi-translational and rotational temperatures, and vibrational energy distributions. The objective is to understand the thermodynamic nonequilibrium phenomena encountered along the trajectory of the hypersonic flowfields of aerospace vehicles. A new gas kinetic, multi-translational temperature model for a monoatomic gas was developed by solving equations derived from the Boltzmann equation with a first order ChapmanEnskog expansion of an anisotropic velocity distribution function. The model extended to rotational nonequilibrium, was computed for highly nonequilibrium shock structures and compared with DSMC solutions and experimental data. The nonequilibrium vibrational energy distributions were modeled by the master equation and the population distributions in the quantum energy states of the diatomic molecule evaluated under multiple-quantum vibrational-translational energy exchanges. The dissociation process considered the effect of vibrational bias and depletion on the equilibrium dissociation rate. Results of hypersonic blunt body flow were compared with experimental shock stand-off distance. The Ladder model with population depletion provided the most favorable comparison with experiment compared with the Park model, Weak-Bias model, and Ladder model without depletion.
