The multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) method greatly improved the accuracy of estimated S-wave velocities. Conventional surface-wave inversion for shallow S-wave velocity relies on generating of dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves. This method, however, just works for laterally homogeneous earth models. For earth models containing strong lateral heterogeneity, a conventional dispersion-curve-based inversion method is challenged. Full waveform inversion has been quickly developed recent years and can improve resolution of a velocity section. By inverting the waveform of Rayleigh waves, shallow S-wave velocities can be estimated. Waveform inversion directly fits waveforms on seismograms, which can yield accurate and high-resolution results by using all information of seismograms, such as amplitude, phase and so on. The feasibility of waveform inversion of Rayleigh waves by a genetic algorithm has been discussed, which relies on prior structure information on models (fault, tunnel, layers). Prior structure information, however, is normally hard to be obtained in real world cases. In our study, we divide the subsurface covered by a shot gather into cells so the prior structure information on models may not be necessary to be known. We use the MASW method to determine an initial S-wave velocity and employ a conjugate gradient method to invert Rayleigh-wave waveforms. Synthetic tests indicate that the conjugate gradient method has great potential to produce high-resolution S-wave velocity sections.
