Abstract:Free jejunal transfer has been criticized by some surgeons as unreliable, poorly tolerant of radiation therapy, and associated with significant morbidity and dysphagia. To determine the validity of these criticisms, we reviewed 93 patients who underwent 96 free jejunal transfers for repair of circumferential pharyngoesophageal defects over a 5-year period. The free jejunal transfer success rate was 97 percent; all 3 failures were repaired with repeated free jejunal transfer. The complication rate was 57 percent (55 of 96); fistula (19 percent) and stricture (15 percent) were the most common complications. An oral diet was tolerated by 80 percent of patients; 85 percent of these resumed their diet within 2 weeks of surgery. Causes of dysphagia were multifactorial. Postoperative radiation therapy did not increase morbidity or dysphagia. The perioperative mortality rate was 2 percent. We conclude that free jejunal transfer is a reliable method of pharyngoesophageal reconstruction that has an acceptable morbidity rate and a low mortality rate. Postoperative radiation therapy is well tolerated by the free jejunal transfer.
Symmetric Refunctionalization of Diaminodinitropyrazine with Hydrazine and Aminotetrazole: Strategy for Enhancing Detonation Performance and Safety in Energetic Materials

Abstract:Two novel nitrogen-rich green energetic compounds were synthesized for the first time from readily available and cost-effective pyrazine starting materials. All newly synthesized molecules were comprehensively characterized, including infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry. All compounds have additionally been validated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The physicochemical properties of compounds 2, 4, and 5 were thoroughly investigated. Notably, all compounds exhibit remarkable performance, such as a high density (>1.84 g cm-3), excellent detonation properties (VOD > 8582 m s-1, and DP > 31.3 GPa), outstanding thermostability (>205 °C), and high insensitivity (IS > 35 J, and FS = 360 N). These attributes are quite comparable to those of secondary benchmark explosives such as TATB, RDX, LLM-105, and FOX-7. This tuned performance evidences that the incorporation of hydrazine, nitro, and aminotetrazole into the pyrazine framework fosters robust nonbonded interactions, ultimately enhancing thermal stability and reducing sensitivity. The findings of this study not only signify that compounds 2 and 5 have excellent detonation properties and stability but also prove that the strategy of replacing amino groups with hydrazine and aminotetrazole is a practical means of developing new insensitive energetic materials.
Theoretical studies on the thermodynamic properties, densities, detonation properties, and pyrolysis mechanisms of trinitromethyl-substituted aminotetrazole compounds

Abstract:Trinitromethyl-substituted aminotetrazoles with -NH₂, -NO₂, -N₃, and -NHC(NO₂)₃ groups were investigated at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of density functional theory. Their sublimation enthalpies, thermodynamic properties, and heats of formation were calculated. The thermodynamic properties of these compounds increase with temperature as well as with the number of nitro groups attached to the tetrazole ring. In addition, the detonation velocities and detonation pressures of these compounds were successfully predicted using the Kamlet-Jacobs equations. It was found that these compounds exhibit good detonation properties, and that compound G (D = 9.2 km/s, P = 38.8 GPa) has the most powerful detonation properties, which are similar to those of the well-known explosive HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine). Finally, the electronic structures and bond dissociation energies of these compounds were calculated. The BDEs of their C-NO₂ bonds were found to range from 101.9 to 125.8 kJ/mol(-1). All of these results should provide useful fundamental information for the design of novel HEDMs.

Abstract:Ammonium dinitramide (ADN, [NH_4]^+[N(NO_2)_2]^- ) and its related propellants are promising high energy density materials for new-generation space propulsion. In order to ensure their safe utilization, it is of primary importance to assess the risk of accidental combustion events such as detonation. Thus, focusing on ADN and its related propellant composed of ADN, monomethylamine nitrate, and urea with weight percentages of 40:40:20 (AMU442), we have studied the properties and steady structure of detonation propagating in gaseous mixtures formed by their thermal decomposition. The AMU442-based mixture exhibits higher von Neumann and Chapman–Jouguet temperatures and pressures than the ADN-based mixture. The study of their steady detonation structure reveals that the gaseous species resulting from the decomposition of AMU442 have higher detonability than the ones resulting from the decomposition of ADN alone. This is in contrast to a previous study about the safety of these propellants in their original (solid or liquid) phase, i.e., AMU442 has lower sensitivity/reactivity to incident impact than ADN. Thermochemical analyses performed for both mixtures show that the decomposition of HNO_3 plays a dominant role for the energy consumption and initiation of the reaction by releasing both OH and NO_2 . For the ADN-based mixture, the reactions involving HN(NO_2)_2 and HNO_3 are the most sensitive, whereas for the AMU442-based mixture, the most sensitive reactions involve CH_3NH_2 , CH_2NH_2 , and HNO_3 . Reaction pathway diagrams emphasize the higher complexity of the chemical pathways for the AMU442-based mixture because of the presence of [CH_3NH_3]^+[NO_3]^- and CH_4N_2O in the initial mixture. Abstract:Computations by density functional theory (DFT) method were performed on a series of di-s-tetrazine derivatives with different substituents and linkages. The heat of formation (HOF) was predicted by designed isodesmic reaction. The results illustrated that introductions group –N3or –N=N– could augment the HOF extremely. The crystal structures were obtained by molecular mechanics methods with dreiding force field. Detonation performance was evaluated by using the Kamlet-Jacobs based on the calculated density and HOF. It was found that –ONO2, –NF2, –NH–NH– and –N=N– groups were effective to enhance the detonation performance of these derivatives. Seven compounds were screened as the potential candidates for high energy density materials.

Abstract:Three series of energetic nitroimidazoles and polynitrobenzenes derivatives containing different substituents (for instance -NH 2 , -N 3 ) were designed and have been optimized at the B3LYP-D3/6-311 + G** level. The effects of multiple substituents on the properties of these energetic materials were analyzed. The electronic structure, energy gap, heat of formation, detonation performance, thermal stability, and surface electrostatic potential of the compounds were systematically studied. As the number of -NH 2 substituents increases, the energy of Δ E HOMO-LUMO descends, and the electronic absorption spectrum of the derivatives moves to a low frequency. The substitution of -NH 2 on the benzene ring is not conducive to increasing HOF value of energetic materials. Among all mentioned compounds, trinitroimidazole substituted polynitrobenzene displays the most attractive detonation pressure (33 GPa), and with a high density of 1.88 g/cm 3 , which has exceeded TATB (31.1 GPa, 1.94 g/cm 3 ). Taming of 4-Azido-3,5-dinitropyrazole Based Energetic Materials

Abstract:4-Azido-3,5-dinitropyrazole (AzDNP) and its derivatives are attractive candidates as energetic materials due to their excellent energetic properties and high nitrogen and oxygen contents. However, they are often more sensitive (primary explosives) and have poor thermal stability (Td < 150 °C), attributed to the presence of azido functionality. In this work, we have tried to fine-tune the properties of 4-azido-3,5-dinitropyrazole by connecting it to 5-nitramino-1,2,4-oxadiazole moieties via N-methylene-C bridges. Further, a series of nitrogen-rich energetic salts (compounds 7-17) were prepared from neutral compound 6 by reacting with different nitrogen-rich bases. All the compounds were thoroughly characterized using IR, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), elemental analysis, and HRMS studies. Compounds 4, 7, and 9 were further confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The physicochemical and energetic properties of all the energetic compounds were also investigated. Hydroxylammonium salt, 12 (Dv : 8961 m/s; P : 33.0 GPa), was found to be the most energetic derivative of AzDNP to date. Compounds 6 (Dv : 8734 m/s; P: 33.9 GPa; IS < 2.5 J) and 12 (Dv: 8961 m s-1; P: 33.0 GPa; IS < 2.5 J) show potential to be used as metal-free high-performing primary explosives. The most comprehensive properties are shown by ammonium salt 7 (Dv : 8591 m s-1; P: 30.6 GPa, Td: 173 °C; IS: 14 J). The structure-property relationship was studied using Hirshfeld surface and Non Covalent Interaction (NCI) analysis.

Abstract:AbstractIn this work, we realized the detection of diamino-pentazolium cation (DAPZ+) in the reaction solution experimentally and proved it to be meta-diamino-pentazole based on the transition state theory. Quantum chemical methods were used to predict its spectral properties, charge distribution, stability and aromaticity. Considering that DAPZ+ has excellent detonation properties, it was further explored by assembling it with N5−, N3− and C(NO2)3− anions, respectively. The results show a strong interaction between DAPZ+ and the three anions, which will have a positive effect on its stability. Thanks to the high enthalpy of formation and density, the calculated detonation properties of the three systems are exciting, especially [DAPZ+][N5−] (D: 10,016 m·s−1; P: 37.94 GPa), whose actual detonation velocity may very likely exceed CL-20 (D: 9773 m·s−1). There is no doubt that this work will become the precursor for the theoretical exploration of new polynitrogen ionic compounds.

Abstract:Thirty nitramines by incorporating ?NHNH2, ?N3, ?NH2, ?NHNO2, ?C??O, ?NF2, ?ONO2, ?NO2, ?C (NO2)3, and ?CH(NO2)2 groups to RDX (1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane) framework were designed. Their electronic structures, heats of formation (HOF), detonation properties, thermal stabilities, thermodynamic properties, and electrostatic potential were systematically investigated by density functional theory. The effects of different substituents on the performance of energetic materials were studied, showing that the number of nitrogen atom in substituted groups plays a critical role in determining HOFs, Thermal dynamic parameters, such as standard molar heat capacity (C?p,m), standard molar entropy (S?m) and standard molar enthalpy (H?m) increased with the increasing number of energetic groups, and the volume of energetic groups have a great effect on standard molar enthalpy. Compared to the traditional energetic compound RDX, all designed molecules have similar or better density, detonation properties, and oxygen balance. Among them, D2 has extraordinary high detonation performance (D = 11.44 km s-1, P = 64.54 GPa), A3 has relatively poor detonation performance (D = 8.85 km s- 1, P = 36.70 GPa), and ?NF2 and ?C(NO2)3 are the best groups in increasing density by more or less six percent.

Abstract:As a new green energetic oxidant, ammonium dinitramide (ADN) has excellent energy density and produces a low amount of combustion pollution, making it suitable for use in low-pollution solid propellants, space shuttle boosters, space transportation power systems and future strategic and tactical missiles. However, due to its strong hygroscopic properties, the development and applications of ADN have been hindered. To better understand, develop and use ADN, in practical applications, simulations and calculation methods have been proposed, which are efficient, economical and valid methods for studying the properties and potential applications of ADN. In this review, the literature on the simulation of ADN based on density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD) calculations, the Monte Carlo (MC) method and numerical calculations is summarized. The research progress on the simulation and numerical calculation of ADN is systematically introduced from five directions: the simulation of the molecular properties of ADN molecules, the simulation of the thermal decomposition of ADN, the simulation of the ADN crystals and their modified ones, the simulation of the interaction between other molecules and ADN molecules, and the numerical simulation of ADN-based propellants used in engines/thrusters, with the aim of deepening the understanding of its basic characteristics, pyrolysis mechanism, MD characteristics and potential application potential of ADN, and providing theoretical support for basic research on this material and its practical applications.

High pressure structural, elastic and vibrational properties of green energetic oxidizer ammonium dinitramide

Abstract:Ammonium DiNitramide (ADN) is one of the most promising green energetic oxidizers for future rocket propellant formulations. In the present work, we report a detailed theoretical study on structural, elastic, and vibrational properties of the emerging oxidizer under hydrostatic compression using various dispersion correction methods to capture weak intermolecular (van der Waals and hydrogen bonding) interactions. The calculated ground state lattice parameters, axial compressibilities, and equation of state are in good accord with the available experimental results. Strength of intermolecular interactions has been correlated using the calculated compressibility curves and elastic moduli. Apart from this, we also observe discontinuities in the structural parameters and elastic constants as a function of pressure. Pictorial representation and quantification of intermolecular interactions are described by the 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D finger print maps. In addition, the computed infra-red (IR) spectra at ambient pressure reveal that ADN is found to have more hygroscopic nature over Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) due to the presence of strong hydrogen bonding. Pressure dependent IR spectra show blue- and red-shift of bending and stretching frequencies which leads to weakening and strengthening of the hydrogen bonding below and above 5 GPa, respectively. The abrupt changes in the calculated structural, mechanical, and IR spectra suggest that ADN might undergo a first order structural transformation to a high pressure phase around 5-6 GPa. From the predicted detonation properties, ADN is found to have high and low performance characteristics when compared with ammonium based energetic oxidizers and well-known secondary explosives, respectively.
Highly Thermally Stable Energetic Compounds Based on 6-Amino-5-nitropyrimidine

Abstract:Two energetic materials (2 and 4) were designed and synthesized from 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (DAT) and 3,5-diamino-4-nitropyrazole (DANP) as starting materials. Both of them were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 2 (T d = 295 °C) and 4 (T d = 300 °C) exhibit good thermal stabilities by differential scanning calorimetry. The detonation performances (2: D = 7281 m s–1, P = 18.6 GPa; 4: D = 7436 m s–1, P = 20.5 GPa) were calculated by EXPLO5 software. Their mechanical sensitivities (2: IS > 20 J, FS = 360 N; 4: IS > 20 J, FS = 360 N) were measured by BAM standard tests. Both 2 and 4 exhibited high thermal stabilities, insensitive characteristics, and fair detonation performances, which give them good potential as heat-resistant explosives.

Abstract:In this study, density functional theory calculations are used to estimate enthalpy of sublimation, enthalpy of formation and crystal density of some important derivatives of 1,2,4,5-tetrazine and 1,4 N-oxide 1,2,4,5-tetrazine. These data were used for predicting their detonation properties including heat of detonation, detonation pressure, detonation velocity, detonation temperature, spark sensitivity, deflagration temperature and power of energetic using appropriate methods. The results show that the title compounds exhibit high positive solid-phase enthalpy of formation. It is found that detonation pressure and detonation velocity of these compounds are high because of the large values of crystal density and solid-phase enthalpy of formation. Detonation temperature and spark sensitivity of some derivatives are higher than octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine as one of the high-performance explosives.

Detonation Performance of Insensitive Nitrogen-Rich Nitroenamine Energetic Materials Predicted from First-Principles Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:Because of the excellent combination of high detonation and low sensitivity properties of the 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) energetic material (EM), it is useful to explore new energetic derivatives that start with the FOX-7 structure. However, most such derivatives are highly sensitive, making them unsuitable for EM applications. An exception is the new nitroenamine EM, 1,1-diamino-2-tetrazole-2-nitroethene (FOX-7-T) (synthesized by replacing a nitro group with a tetrazole ring), which exhibits good stability. Unfortunately, FOX-7-T shows an unexpected much lower detonation performance than FOX-7, despite its higher nitrogen content. To achieve an atomistic understanding of the insensitivity and detonation performance of FOX-7 and FOX-7-T, we carried out reactive molecular dynamics (RxMD) using the ReaxFF reactive force field and combined quantum mechanics MD (QM-MD). We found that the functional group plays a significant role in the initial decomposition reaction. For FOX-7, the initial decomposition involves only simple hydrogen transfer reactions at high temperature, whereas for FOX-7-T, the initial reaction begins at much lower temperature with a tetrazole ring breaking to form N2, followed by many subsequent reactions. Our first-principles-based simulations predicted that FOX-7-T has 34% lower CJ pressure, 15% lower detonation velocity, and 45% lower CJ temperature than FOX-7. This is partly because a larger portion of the FOX-7-T mass gets trapped into condensed phase carbon clusters at the CJ point, suppressing generation of gaseous CO2 and N2 final products, leading to reduced energy delivery. Our findings suggest that the oxygen balance is an important factor to be considered in the design of the next generation of high-nitrogen-containing EMs.

Theoretical studies of pentazole-based compounds with high detonation performance

Abstract:Four types of pentazole ring-based organic compounds, including triaminotripentazolobenzene (TATPB), triaminotripentazolocyclohexane (TATPH), trinitrotripentazolobenzene (TNTPB) and trinitrotripentazolocyclohexane (TNTPH) were designed and investigated by ab initio quantum chemistry methods. The geometric structure in the gas phase, electrostatic potential, HOMO-LUMO orbitals, and Wiberg bond orders was calculated at the level of B3LYP/6-311g. Several properties were predicted based on the calculation results above. Among the four compounds, TNTPB has the highest predicted packing density (1.85 g cm−3), the highest theoretical enthalpy of formation in solid phase (1486.89 kJ mol−1) and the most powerful theoretical detonation performance (D = 9.36 km s−1 and P = 38.05 GPa). The detonation properties of TNTPB are comparable to the new generation of explosives. Two possible solid phases of TNTPB in P1ˉ and P21/c space groups were predicted. The periodic structures were optimized by periodic first-principles calculations with van der Waals correction. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were performed to confirm that TNTPB had the higher detonation growth rate than TATB (2,4,6-trinitro-1,3,5-benzenetriamine). We proposed that introducing the pentazole rings into designing high energy density materials (HEDMs) is an effective method for not only improving the detonation performance but also accelerating the detonation growth.

Abstract:The development of energetic materials is still facing challenges due to the inherent contradiction between energy and sensitivity. Two new nitrogen-rich energetic salts of 3,4,5-1H-trinitropyrazole (HTNP) were synthesized. They are fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, NMR, MS and IR spectroscopy. The DSC and BAM tests were carried out as well. These TNP salts show high thermostability and high positive heat of formation. Their detonation performances were calculated by the EXPLO5 program. Most noteworthy is that DATr salt exhibits superior sensitivities and detonation performance comparable to secondary explosive RDX, making it promising for use as a new-generation green energetic material.

Compounds 10, 11 and 15 were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray structuring. N-Functionalized nitroazoles have moderate to excellent thermal stabilities with good densities. Data based on impact and friction tests show these compounds range from very sensitive to insensitive. Theoretical calculations carried out using Gaussian 03 demonstrate good to excellent detonation pressures and velocities, as well as high specific impulse.

Abstract:To look for high energy density materials (HEDM), the relationships between the structures and the performances of polynitroadamantanes (PNAs) were studied. The assigned infrared spectra of PNAs obtained at the density functional theory (DFT) B3LYP/6-31G level were used to compute the thermodynamic properties on the basis of the principle of statistical thermodynamics. The thermodynamic properties are linearly related with the number of nitro groups as well as with the temperatures. Detonation properties of PNAs were evaluated by using the Kamlet-Jacobs equation based on the calculated densities and heats of formation for titled compounds, and it is found that only when the number of nitro groups of PNA is equal to or more than eight can it be possible for PNAs to be used as HEDMs. The relative stabilities of PNAs were studied by the pyrolysis mechanism using the UHF-PM3 method. The homolysis of the C-NO2 bond is predicted to be the initial step of thermal decomposition. The activation energies (Ea) for the homolysis decrease with the number of nitro groups being increased on the whole. The stability order of dinitroadamantane isomers derived from the interactions among nitro groups is consistent with what is determined by Ea. The relations between the Ea's and the electronic structure parameters were discussed. In combination with the stability, PNA (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10-) is recommended as the target of HEDM with insensitivity.
Effect of Nitrogen-Doping on Detonation and Stability Properties of CL-20 Derivatives from a Theoretical Viewpoint

Abstract:Six nitrogen‐doping CL‐20 derivatives were designed and investigated as energetic materials at B3LYP/6‐31G** level based on the density functional theory method. Results show that nitrogen‐doping derivatives exhibit high crystal densities (1.98∼2.18 g cm−3) and positive heats of formation (451.68∼949.68 kJ mol−1). Among nitrogen‐doping derivatives, 2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexanitro‐2,4,6,8,9,10,12‐heptaazaisowurtzitane(A1), 2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexanitro‐2,3,4,6,8,9,10,12‐octaazaisowurtzitane(B1) and 2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexanitro‐1,2,3,4,6,8,9,10,12‐nonaazaisowurtzitane(C1) possess better detonation velocity and pressure than CL‐20, and A1 gives the best performance (DK‐J•A1=9.6 km s−1; PK‐J•A1=43.07 GPa). Moreover, the specific impulse, brisance, and power of N‐doping CL‐20 derivatives are also higher than that of CL‐20. The thermal stability and sensitivity of nitrogen‐doping molecules were analyzed via the bond dissociation energy (BDE), the characteristic height (h50) and electrostatic sensitivity (EES). The results indicate that the stability of A1, B1 and 2,4,6,8,10,12‐hexanitro‐1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,12‐decaazaisowurtzitane(D1) is comparable with that of CL‐20. Considering detonation performance and stability, A1 and B1 may be promising candidates as energetic materials with superior detonation performance and favorable stability.

Abstract:We always pursue improved energetic performances such as high formation enthalpies, moderate sensitivities and stabilities for all energetic compounds. 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a very classic high-energy explosive which has been applied in both military and civilian fields broadly, whose combustion properties can be enhanced by introducing hydrogen-storage compounds such as Lithium amidoborane (LAB). Here we apply CPMD method to study how LAB affects a traditional nitramine explosive (RDX) in a simulated detonation. The theoretical results show there are abundant exothermic reactions caused by the introduction of LAB, which suggests hydrogen-storage material is a prospective assistant ingredient for composite explosives.
