Abstract:The metal-ligand coordination was employed to construct a dynamic network based on a crystalline poly( p-dioxanone) (PPDO), which exhibits an excellent shape-memory performance and dynamic nature. Using a synthetic strategy, the bipyridine (bpy) based ligand was introduced into PPDO polymer chains via ring-opening polymerization of p-dioxanone (PDO) initiated by a bipyridine containing diol, followed by chain extending with 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to produce the high molecular weight Mbpy-PPDO linear polymer. Finally, the target dynamic network with precise architecture can be achieved by adding Fe(II) ions to coordinate with bpy ligands in polymer chains. Structural characterization of Mbpy-PPDO and the corresponding prepolymer was carried out by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FT-IR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The chelating efficiency was evaluated by using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES). The dynamic nature of the network was confirmed by the thermally-induced sol-gel transition, ligand exchange, and recycling and reprocessing experiments. The thermal properties of Mbpy-PPDO and the resulting networks were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). It reveals that all networks show crystallization ability except for the sample that has the highest bpy content and the shortest PPDO chain length. The investigation of the shape memory effect was performed by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). An excellent shape-memory performance can be realized in the network which has a suitable Fe(II) content and PPDO chain length; the fixing ratio (R-f) approaches 100%, and the recovery ratio is beyond 93%.
