Abstract:The satellite network, together with the traditional ground network, constitutes the Space–Ground Interconnection Network (SGIN), which can provide global coverage for communications and become an important developing trend of the next generation network. Currently, there exist lots of routing algorithms that are based on the characteristics of satellite networks. However, most of them focus on a single transmission performance index while ignoring others. A multi-path parallel routing strategy for the satellite network based on Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and information of inter satellite links (ISLs) is proposed. Firstly, the strategy utilizes the historical and near-real-time information of the ISLs to conduct off-line routing computing on the ground. After that, real-time information of the ISLs and QoS requirements for data communications will be reconsidered on board to adjust the pre-computed routing scheme. Finally, data transmission will be allowed to take place on several routes between the source and the destination in parallel. This strategy not only ensures high arrival rate and low latency of data transmissions, but also fully utilizes link resources of the satellite network and balances the workloads among ISLs efficiently.

Abstract:A multi-path parallel routing strategy based on traffic QoS(Quality of Service) requirements and conditions of ISLs(Inter-Satellite Links) is proposed to deal with traffic diversity in satellite broadband networks to meet requirements of integrated space-ground TT&C(Telemetry,Tracking and Command) networks.The proposed strategy utilizes the history and near-realtime information of ISLs to pre-plan routing.It adjusts the pre-planned routes afterwards according to the realtime information of ISLs and QoS requirements for data communication.Finally,data transmission will take place on several routes between the source and the destination in parallel.The strategy not only ensures high arrival rate of data transmission,but also fully utilizes link resources of satellite networks and efficiently balances the workload among ISLs.

Abstract:As an essential 6G component, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication has aroused increasing attentions from academia and industry to provide seamless and highly-efficient networking services. However, existing routing strategies are primarily designed for terrestrial networks or small-scale satellite networks, making it inapplicable to future LEO satellite constellations of ultra density, high dynamics, and large scale. Moreover, since Free Space Optical (FSO) communications have been expected for Inter-satellite Links (ISLs) and the number of constructed FSO ISLs depends on the Acquisition, Pointing, and Tracking (APT) terminals and geometric visibilities, the routing algorithm needs to be adaptive. To address these issues, this paper considers the dual-layer network architecture composed of Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites and LEO satellites, where the regional network division is adopted for the LEO satellite layer to alleviate the complexity and improve the routing efficiency. Then, a multi-objective reinforcement learning-based routing strategy with local information considered is proposed to meet the differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of diversified terrestrial applications. A cooperative mechanism is also designed to address the conflicts caused by the routing design for different applications. The simulation results demonstrate the proposal is applicable to varying numbers of APT terminals and outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of diversified QoS metrics.

Abstract:Abstract Compared with single layer satellite network, satellite distribution of multi-layer satellite networks in the double layer or multilayer orbital plane, combines all the advantages of engaging subjects of the satellite, therefore contains its low vulnerability, good robustness, high stability, high spectrum efficiency and system throughput, channel characteristics such as large capacity, in the satellite network is a very promising direction. Multilayer satellite network also has some inevitable disadvantages, that is, the number of nodes and the number of links is large, so it has the characteristics of frequent changes in network topology, which requires higher routing algorithm. There are many researches on routing algorithms based on multi-layer satellite networks at home and abroad. This paper introduces the general situation of multi-layer satellite network, classifies the existing routing algorithms of multi-layer satellite network according to different standards, analyzes several typical routing algorithms in detail, points out the advantages and disadvantages, and summarizes the future development trend.

Abstract:With the expansion of satellite constellation, routing techniques for small-scale satellite networks have problems in routing overhead and forwarding efficiency. This paper proposes a vector segment routing method for large-scale multi layer satellite networks. A vector forwarding path is built based on the location between the source and the destination. Data packets are forwarded along this vector path, shielding the influence of satellite motion on routing forwarding. Then, a dynamic route maintenance strategy is suggested. In a multi layer satellite network, the low-orbit satellites are in charge of computing the routing tables for one area, and the routing paths are dynamically adjusted in the area in accordance with the network. The medium-orbit satellites maintain the connectivity of vector paths in multiple segmented areas. The forwarding mode based on the source and destination location improves the forwarding efficiency, and the segmented route maintenance mode decreases the routing overhead. The simulation results indicate that vector segment routing has significant performance advantages in end-to-end delay, packet loss rate, and throughput in a multi layer satellite network. We also simulate the impact of routing table update mechanism on network performance and overhead and give the performance of segmented vector routing in multi layer low-orbit satellite networks.

Abstract:Dynamic topologies and constrained recourses are two main characters of satellite networks. These characters require a specialized and efficient routing algorithm. In this paper, a QoS routing algorithm based on PEC multi objective optimization method is proposed to find paths that satisfy all user QoS requirements efficiently. A new routing scheme is also developed to reduce the computing load in satellites. Simulation results show that our routing scheme and algorithm can achieve optimized routing and perform well in multi-layered satellite IP networks.

Abstract:Multi-Layered Satellite Network (MLSN), especially LEO/MEO satellite network, consisting of low and medium earth orbit satellites, is capable of providing higher coverage and better service than single-layered one. Its performance in deployment, however, is mainly encumbered by obsolete routing protocols and algorithms. This paper takes the predictability of satellite movements into consideration, based on which a novel routing protocol Predictable Satellite Network Routing Protocol (PSNRP)-is proposed. In this protocol, every topology change due to satellite movement is either described as a predictable or an unpredictable change. On the basis of PSNRP, we import a heuristic routing algorithm for satisfying Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements from network users, which is convinced as a Non-deterministic Polynomial Complete problem. The QoS requirements in this paper mainly refer to end-to-end delay, bandwidth and package loss rate. In addition to obtaining better routing performance, PSNRP successfully allocates calculation tasks evenly among all nodes, separates user data from protocol control data and achieves stronger robustness against satellite failures and link congestions. The superiority of our routing scheme is proved by simulation results.

Abstract:Ultra-dense low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications have been regarded as an important solution for 6G to provide seamless and high-throughput network services. However, the qualified data transmissions among satellites are challenged by the routing policy design which is significantly difficult due to the ultra density, high dynamics, complex inter-satellite links (ISLs), and diversified quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this article, we discuss the difficulties in routing policy design for future free space optical (FSO) communication-enabled LEO satellite networks. An intelligent multi-objective routing strategy is proposed to meet the diversified service requirements. The simulation results evaluate the adaptability of the proposal to networks with different numbers of FSO terminals on satellites, as well as the advantages over benchmark methods. Moreover, the potential future directions are also discussed to encourage more meaningful research.

Abstract:A new tunneling-based multi-path routing mechanism tailored for the packet-switched non-geostationary (NGEO) satellite networks is proposed and evaluated. The proposed routing mechanism exploits both the predictable topology and inherent multi-path property of the NGEO satellite networks to construct the tunnels between satellites. The ingress satellite distributes the traffic along the tunnels to the egress satellite while the egress satellite sends the feedback packets periodically along the tunnels. The maximum link utilization along each tunnel is retrieved via the feedback packet, thus the ingress satellite could form a partial global view of the network congestion status and adaptively move the traffic from the over-utilized tunnels to the under-utilized tunnels. The simulation results corroborate the improved performance of the proposed mechanism compared with the existing in the literature, and also verify the proved convergence property corresponding to the Wardrop equilibria.

Abstract:With the current trend towards low Earth orbit mega-constellations with inter-satellite links, efficient routing in such highly dynamic space-borne networks is becoming increasingly important. Due to the distinct network topology, specifically tailored solutions are required. Firstly, the relative movement of the constellation causes frequent handover events between the satellites and the terminals on ground. Furthermore, unevenly distributed traffic demands lead to geographical hot spots. The physical size of the network also implies significant propagation delays. Therefore, monitoring the dynamic topology changes and link loads on a network-wide basis for routing purposes is typically impractical with massive signaling overhead. To address these issues, we propose a distributed load-balanced routing scheme based on Software Defined Networking. The approach divides the large-scale network into sub-sections, called clusters. In order to minimize signaling overhead, packets are forwarded between these clusters according to geographical heuristics. Within each cluster active Quality of Service-aware load-balancing is applied. The responsible on-board network controller forwards routing instructions based on the network state information in its cluster. We also analyze specific design choices for the clusters and the interfaces between them. The protocol has been implemented in a system-level simulator and compared to a source-routed benchmark solution.

Abstract:Recently advanced low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite networks represented by large constellations and advanced payloads provide great promises for enabling high-quality Internet connectivity to any place on Earth. However, the traditional access-based approach to satellite operations cannot meet the pressing requirements of real-time, reliable, and resilient operations for LEO satellites. A new scheme is proposed based on multi-layer satellite networking considering the advanced Ka-band and optical communications payloads on a satellite platform. The proposed scheme can enable efficient and resilient message transmissions for critical telecommand and telemetry missions through different layers of satellite networks, which consist of LEO, medium-Earth-orbit (MEO), and geostationary (GEO) satellites. The proposed scheme is evaluated in a 24-hr satellite mission and shows superior performance improvements compared to the traditional operations approach.

Abstract:Multi-layer satellite network has become a hot spot for its wider coverage and higher bandwidth level. However, due to the frequent link changes and complexity of network, it is hard to find out a mechanism to handle well on long delay and high packet loss level. This paper proposes an optimized OSPF protocol called OOWLP to eliminate unnecessary routing convergence to optimize the packet loss level and delay ultimately. Link plan table, which records link contacting plan, will be used to update the link state database periodically so that we can eliminate the flooding procedure caused by scheduled link changes. On the other hand, Constrained Shortest Path First (CSPF) will be used to get business differentiated routes in multi-layer satellite network to optimized the throughput capacity in congestion scenario. We divide the sending packets into different businesses and get the routes for each business with longer duration limited by remaining bandwidth. Simulation results show that in normal scenario, average packet loss rate and delay performance are improved 17.42%, 51.44ms respectively, average packet loss rate and throughput capacity performance are optimized 79.05%, 9.81Mbps respectively in congestion scenario compared to standard OSPF. As a result, the proposed mechanism is able to shorten the average delay and lower the packet loss level in multi-layer satellite network.

Abstract:The periodic and dynamic topology of satellite networks poses new challenge to the design of routing protocols. Since the routing protocols of conventional networks can not be effectively applied to satellite networks, many new routing techniques for satellite networks were put forward. With an introduction to satellite network architecture and topology control strategies along with the developmental history of routing techniques on satellite networks, this paper summarizes the core mechanism, feature and major problems of some important routing techniques of satellite networks from the classification perspective. Considering application requirements, the paper also suggests the future trends towards the development of routing techniques on satellite networks.

Abstract:The low‐earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, composed of a large number of satellite nodes, is a hot research topic at present. Due to the characteristics of the large‐scale LEO satellite network, such as many satellite nodes, short orbit period, large dynamic change of topology, and unstable link‐state, its communication quality of service (QoS) requirements are difficult to meet. Aiming at this problem, various factors that may affect data transmission are first analyzed. The network link selection problem is modeled as a multi‐constraint optimization decision problem, a routing mathematical model based on linear programming (LP) is designed, and its solution is solved. Aiming at the problem of limited onboard computing resources, a multi‐object optimization Dijkstra algorithm (MOODA) is designed. The MOODA finds the optimal path according to the comprehensive performance of the link. It solves the problems of poor comprehensive QoS performance and the low degree of load balancing of the paths found by the Dijkstra algorithm. The simulation results show that the paths found by the two algorithms have good QoS, robustness, and load balancing performance. This paper studies the routing algorithms in the low earth orbit satellite network. Considering that the evaluation of inter‐satellite links in previous studies is relatively simple and the security of data transmission paths is poor, a linear programming routing algorithm based on a mathematical model and a multi‐object optimization Dijkstra algorithm are proposed. The simulation results show that they perform well in many respects.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the traffic-sensitive multi-layer low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite-terrestrial network. Massive terrestrial user access to the core network is realized via the backhaul supported by multi-layer LEO satellites. The ultra-dense satellite topology enables a promising solution for the high-capacity backhaul data transmission for terrestrial users. Jointly considering the backhaul capacity requirement and traffic dynamics of terrestrial satellite terminals, we analyze their average backhaul capacity using both stochastic geometry and queueing theory. Aiming to minimize the total required satellite number for fulfilling the backhaul capacity and seamless global coverage requirements, we propose a multi-layer LEO satellite constellation deployment scheme considering the satellite mobility. Simulation results verify the backhaul capacity analysis and the advantage of multi-layer constellation for saving satellites. The optimized multi-layer LEO satellite constellation with any coverage requirement and traffic rate is presented.

Abstract:Routing scheme plays a critical role in determining the performance and reliability of a satellite network. Since the resources in satellite networks are constrained, a major challenge in satellite network routing is how to find paths that satisfy all user QoS requirements in a low cost. In this paper, a multi-QoS optimization routing scheme is proposed to solve this problem in hierarchical satellite networks. Simulation results show that this scheme can achieve efficient routing optimized in all preset QoS parameters and performs well in hierarchical satellite network.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel routing algorithm designed for direct-to-cell satellite constellations in satellite networks. The algorithm aims to ensure stable Quality of Service (QoS) for users despite the highly dynamic nature of satellite links and network conditions. It comprises two key components: a terrestrial-satellite link selection model and an inter-satellite multi-hop routing decision model. To enhance decision-making, the algorithm incorporates a mechanism that interacts with large-scale digital twin constellations, offering agents with high-precision state data inputs and feedback for training and application support. The terrestrial-satellite link selection process is modeled as a constraint satisfaction problem, maximizing the Link Quality Indicator (LQI). Meanwhile, inter-satellite data forwarding decisions are determined utilizing an enhanced dynamic reward mechanism and a re-designed neural network in the DDQN model. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the Digital Twin-Assisted Double Deep Q-Network Routing (DT-DDQNR) algorithm over traditional routing algorithms in terms of overall network QoS performance, offering a promising solution for optimizing data transmission in integrated terrestrial-satellite networks.

Abstract:In recent years, several IP-based algorithms have been developed for low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. In this work, a new dynamic source routing algorithm in satellite constellation based on flood routing is developed. This source routing algorithm consists of such main mechanisms as route discovery, route maintenance, route cache and earth station agency, capable of processing routing tasks on-board and reducing the size of on-board memory by the cooperation of satellite nodes and earth station agencies. The performance of the DSRSC routing algorithm is evaluated through a simple Globalstar-like LEO satellite constellation network model. With the analysis and evaluation of performance, our new routing algorithm is suitable to be used in LEO satellite constellation network.
