Abstract:Through designing hierarchical structures, particularly optimizing the chemical and architectural interactions at its inorganic/organic interface, nacre has achieved an excellent combination of contradictory mechanical properties such as strength and toughness, which is highly demanded yet difficult to achieve by most synthetic materials. Most techniques applied to develop nacre-mimetic composites have been focused on mimicking the "brick-and-mortar" structure, but the interfacial architectural features, especially the asperities and mineral bridges of "bricks", have been rarely concerned, which are of equal importance for enhancing mechanical properties of nacre. Here, we used a modified bidirectional freezing method followed by uniaxial pressing and chemical reduction to assemble a nacre-mimetic graphene/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite film, with both asperities and bridges introduced in addition to the lamellar layers to mimic the interfacial architectural interactions found in nacre. As such, we have developed a composite film that is not only strong (up to ∼150.9 MPa), but also tough (up to ∼8.50 MJ/m3), and highly stretchable (up to ∼10.44%), difficult to obtain by other methods. This was all achieved by only interfacial architectural engineering within the traditional "brick-and-mortar" structure, without introducing a third component or employing chemical cross-linker as in some other nacre-mimetic systems. More importantly, we believe that the design principles and processing strategies reported here can also be applied to other material systems to develop strong and stretchable materials.

Abstract:Inspired by interfacial interactions of protein matrix and the crystal platelets in nacre, herein, a super-tough artificial nacre was produced through constructing the synergistic interface interactions of pi-pi interaction and hydrogen bonding between graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and sulfonated styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene copolymer synthesized with multifunctional benzene. The resultant GO-based artificial nacre showed super-high toughness of 15.3 +/- 2.5 MJ/m(3), superior to natural nacre and other GO-based nanocomposites. The ultra-tough property of the novel nacre was attributed to synergistic effect of pi-pi stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding. This bioinspired synergistic toughening strategy opens a new avenue for constructing high performance GO-based nanocomposites in the near future. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A biologically inspired, multilayer laminate structural design is deployed into composite films of poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) graft graphene oxide (GO) synthesized by Ce(IV)/HNO3 redox system in aqueous solution. Artificial hybrid films are fabricated by vacuum-assisted filtration macroscopic assembly method. Using nacre as the brick-and-mortar model construct free-standing membranes, here GO is similar to brick and PBA acts as mortar revealing the similar function of biopolymers in the natural nacre. Owing to the low Tg of PBA, the polymer chains could move freely at room temperature, enhancing the extensibility and flexibility. Meanwhile, the chemical structure of free-standing membranes was studied by Raman spectrum and XPS. The morphologies were charactered by XRD, SEM and TEM which are compact with the mechanical properties of the films. Interestingly, by tuning grafted PBA contents from 3.5wt% to 77wt%, quite wide range of mechanical properties (tensile strength from 20 to 180MPa, Young’s modulus from 0.1 to 7GPa, toughness from 0.8 to 4.3MJ/m3, elongation from 1.2 to 24.5%) were obtained. At the same time, we found that the nanocomposite membranes can be adjusted from mimic nacre-liked film with high strength to a homogenous dispersed elastomer.

Abstract:The synergistic toughening effect of building blocks and interface interaction exists in natural materials, such as nacre. Herein, inspired by one-dimensional (1D) nanofibrillar chitin and two-dimensional (2D) calcium carbonate platelets of natural nacre, we have fabricated integrated strong and tough ternary bio-inspired nanocomposites (artificial nacre) successfully via the synergistic effect of 2D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and 1D double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) and hydrogen bonding cross-linking with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. Moreover, the crack mechanics model with crack deflection by 2D rGO nanosheets and crack bridging by 1D DWNTs and PVA chains induces resultant artificial nacre exhibiting excellent fatigue-resistance performance. These outstanding characteristics enable the ternary bioinspired nanocomposites have many promising potential applications, for instance, aerospace, flexible electronics devices and so forth. This synergistic toughening strategy also provides an effective way to assemble robust graphene-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:The gold standard of natural nacre provides the inspiration for assembling bioinspired nanocomposites. Herein, the gel-film transformation method, a feasible and economical strategy, was applied to fabricate flexible, large-area, and hierarchical porous graphene oxide (GO)-based nanocomposites with excellent properties. In this study, the GO-polymer nanocomposite hydrogels could be transformed into nanocomposite films with hierarchically laminated structures via the evaporation self-assembly technique, followed by introduction of ionic cross-linking into the nanocomposite films. The obtained bioinspired nanocomposites, with synergistic effect originating from hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds, have an excellent tensile strength of 475.2 +/- 13.0 MPa and a toughness of 6.6 +/- 0.3 MJ m(-3), as well as a high electrical conductivity of 297.1 S cm(-1). Therefore, this type of strong integrated nacre-like graphene nanocomposites have great potential applications in aerospace and flexible supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Inspired by the ternary structure of natural nacre, robust ternary artificial nacre is constructed through synergistic toughening of graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets via a vacuum-assisted filtration self-assembly process. The synergistic toughening effect from high mechanical properties of GO and lubrication of MoS2 nanosheets is successfully demonstrated. Meanwhile, the artificial nacre shows high electrical conductivity. This approach for constructing robust artificial nacre by synergistic effect from GO and MoS2 provides a creative opportunity for designing and fabricating integrated artificial nacre in the near future, and this kind of ternary artificial nacre has great potential applications in aerospace, flexible supercapacitor electrodes, artificial muscle, and tissue engineering.

Abstract:Inspired by the hierarchical micro/nanoscale structure and interfacial interactions of natural nacre, a variety of bioinspired layered materials were designed and prepared. However, the mechanical properties of the material were low according to the single interface interaction. In this study, we demonstrated strong and tough ternary bioinspired artificial nacre through synergistic toughening of graphene oxide (GO) and nanocellulose (CNF). Furthermore, the composites also realized a combination of multiple interfacial crosslinking strategies, including hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding and covalent bonding, which greatly improved the mechanical properties of the materials. The tensile strengths and toughnesses of the ternary bioinspired composites reached 528 MPa and 7.3 MJ/m(3), which were 3.9 and 4.1 times that of natural nacre, respectively. In addition to their excellent tensile strengths and toughnesses, the composites also had good electrical properties with a conductivity of 56.2 S cm(-1). This bioinspired ternary artificial nacre, with excellent mechanical and electrical properties, has potential applications in aerospace engineering, flexible electrodes, artificial muscles and tissue engineering. Abstract:Due to hierarchical organization of micro- and nanostructures, natural nacre exhibits extraordinary strength and toughness, and thus provides a superior model for the design and fabrication of high-performance artificial composite materials. Although great progress has been made in constructing layered composites by alternately stacking hard inorganic platelets and soft polymers, the real issue is that the excellent strength of these composites was obtained at the sacrifice of toughness. In this work, inspired by the layered aragonite microplatelets/chitin nanofibers-protein structure of natural nacre, alumina microplatelets-graphene oxide nanosheets-poly(vinyl alcohol) (Al2O3/GO-PVA) artificial nacre is successfully constructed through layer-by-layer bottom-up assembly, in which Al2O3 and GO-PVA act as "bricks" and "mortar", respectively. The artificial nacre has hierarchical "brick-and-mortar" structure and exhibits excellent strength (143 ± 13 MPa) and toughness (9.2 ± 2.7 MJ/m(3)), which are superior to those of natural nacre (80-135 MPa, 1.8 MJ/m(3)). It was demonstrated that the multiscale hierarchical structure of ultrathin GO nanosheets and submicrometer-thick Al2O3 platelets can deal with the conflict between strength and toughness, thus leading to the excellent mechanical properties that cannot be obtained using only one size of platelet. We strongly believe that the work presented here provides a creative strategy for designing and developing new composites with excellent strength and toughness.
Bio-inspired robust integration of graphene composites

Abstract:Abstract： Inspired by the natural nacre, we developed a novel strategy for fabricating the integration of supertough and high strength artificial nacre based on GO sheets via conjugated cross-linking. Highly π-conjugated long chain molecules of 10,12-pentacosadiyn-1-ol (PCDO) are cross-linked with GO sheets only with content of 6.5 wt%, resulting in huge displacement when loading and adsorption of much more fracture energy. The toughness is two times higher than that of natural nacre. Furthermore, the π-conjugated polymers could add additional benefit to the high electrical conductivity of the chemically reduced GO (rGO). This study opens the door toward biomimetic production of GO- or rGO-based composites with supertough and highly conductive properties, which will have great promising applications in many fields like aerospace, flexible supercapacitor electrodes, artificial muscle, and tissue engineering.

Abstract:Mimicking natural structures to synthesize novel structural materials is attracting considerable attention, but progress in practical applications remains slow. Natural composites achieve excellent balance between strength and toughness from the “brick-and-mortar” arrangement of organic and inorganic layers, accompanied with various toughening mechanisms. We emulate the structural features of natural nacre by combining graphene oxide (GO) and a gellan gum (GG) biopolymer. We also reveal the mechanism of integrative mechanical performance. Several GO nanosheets with GG coating and crosslinking are used as optimal building blocks with intrinsic hard/soft features. These materials are induced to rapidly self-assemble into aligned nacre-like films by vacuum filtration to produce strong and tough bio-inspired composite films with fracture strength of 88.7MPa, fracture stain of 0.84%, tensile modulus of 25.4GPa and good biocompatibility. This study has merit of unrestricted fabrication of a homogeneous colloidal suspension of crosslinked nanohybrid building blocks of GO. Composite films constructed using these building blocks are innovative because of combined interactions, including coordination bonding, ionic bonding, and hydrogen bonding among their constituents. These films differ from other reported bio-inspired GO composite films with single adhesion interaction and thus provide good integrative mechanical performance through a multiple energy dissipation mechanism.

Abstract:Inspired by the nacre, we demonstrated the integrated ternary artificial nacre nanocomposites through synergistic toughening of graphene oxide (GO) and nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC). In addition, the covalent bonding was introduced between adjacent GO nanosheets. The synergistic toughening effects from building blocks of one-dimensional NFC and two-dimensional GO, interface interactions of hydrogen and covalent bonding together result in the integrated mechanical properties including high tensile strength, toughness, and fatigue life as well as high electrical conductivity. These extraordinary properties of the ternary synthetic nacre nanocomposites allow the support for advances in diverse strategic fields including stretchable electronics, transportation, and energy. Such bioinspired strategy also provides a new insight in designing novel multifunctional nanocomposites.

Abstract:With its synergistic toughening effect and hierarchical micro/nanoscale structure, natural nacre sets a "gold standard" for nacre-inspired materials with integrated high strength and toughness. We demonstrated strong and tough ternary bioinspired nanocomposites through synergistic toughening of reduced graphene oxide and double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) and covalent bonding. The tensile strength and toughness of this kind of ternary bioinspired nanocomposites reaches 374.1 ± 22.8 MPa and 9.2 ± 0.8 MJ/m(3), which is 2.6 and 3.3 times that of pure reduced graphene oxide film, respectively. Furthermore, this ternary bioinspired nanocomposite has a high conductivity of 394.0 ± 6.8 S/cm and also shows excellent fatigue-resistant properties, which may enable this material to be used in aerospace, flexible energy devices, and artificial muscle. The synergistic building blocks with covalent bonding for constructing ternary bioinspired nanocomposites can serve as the basis of a strategy for the construction of integrated, high-performance, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based nanocomposites in the future.
A Strong, Tough, and Stable Composite with Nacre-Inspired Sandwich Structure

Abstract:Improving the fracture resistance of nacre-inspired composites is crucial in addressing the strength-toughness trade-off. However, most previously proposed strategies for enhancing fracture resistance in these composites have been limited to interfacial modification by polymer, which restricts mechanical enhancement. Here, a composite material consisting of graphene oxide (GO) lamellae and nanocrystalline reinforced amorphous alumina nanowires (NAANs) has been developed. The structure of the composite is inspired by nacre and is composed of stacked GO nanosheets with NAANs in between, forming a sandwich-like structure. This design enhances the fracture resistance of the composite through the pull-out of GO nanosheets at the nanoscale and GO/NAANs sandwich-like coupling at the micro-scale, while also providing stiff ceramic support. This composite simultaneously possesses high strength (887.8 MPa), toughness (31.6 MJ m-3), superior cyclic stability (1600 cycles), and long-term (2 years) immersion stability, which outperform previously reported GO-based lamellar composites. The hierarchical fracture design provides a new path to design next-generation strong, tough, and stable materials for advanced engineering applications. The composite inspired by nacre is prepared by incorporating dual-phase alumina nanowires as reinforcement and bridging components to form a 1D sandwich structure through vacuum-assisted suction filtration. The mechanical behaviors of hierarchical fracture resistance contributes to their excellent high strength, toughness, and stability, providing new design for solving conflicts between strength and toughness in engineering materials. image

Abstract:The strength and toughness of materials are predominantly attributed to the structure-related stress distribution and energy dissipation in the deformation and damage process. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of nacre, the ternary structure artificial nacre composite films composed of homophonous dimensional hierarchy graphene oxide (GO) sheets and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were designed and prepared via the dry-spinning process. It demonstrates that there is a mechanical synergistic effect of the dimensional hierarchy GO sheets that can improve the stress distribution (suppress and disperse the local stress concentration regions) and increase the energy dissipation (trigger more crack deflection), thus improving the toughness on the premise of ensuring excellent strength of the films. Based on the dry-spinning and lamination assembly process, large-size bulk composites with excellent mechanical properties constructed by these films can be obtained and are expected to achieve mass production, which has great potential applications in aerospace, automobile, biomedical, and energy industries.

Abstract:Inspired by the nacre layered multistage structure and high toughness and strength of the unity of mechanical properties, a graphene oxide/carboxyl functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes/konjac glucomannan (GO-SC-KGM) nanocomposite is successfully fabricated through a vacuum filtration method for the first time. The GO nanosheets with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, SC with carboxyl groups, and the KGM molecule chains with abundant hydroxyl groups could easily form hydrogen bonding networks, resulting in a strong interface interaction. The tensile strength of prepared GO-SC-KGM nanocomposites reaches 311.4 ± 9.2 MPa. At the same time, it can maintain toughness up to 11.1 ± 0.5 MJ m-3. Its strength and toughness are much higher than nacres and other nacre-like GO-base composites. Thus, this kind of SC enhances high tensile strength and toughness, and the bioinspired nanocomposite exhibits promising potential applications for food packaging, aerospace, tissue engineering, or as a replacement for conventional chemical synthetic organic based materials.
Nacre-Inspired Integrated Strong and Tough Reduced Graphene Oxide-Poly(Acrylic Acid) Nanocomposites

Abstract:Inspired by the relationship between interface interactions and the high performance mechanical properties of nacre, a strong and tough nacre-inspired nanocomposite was demonstrated based on graphene oxide (GO) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) prepared via a vacuum-assisted filtration self-assembly process. The abundant hydrogen bonding between GO and PAA results in both high strength and toughness of the bioinspired nanocomposites, which are 2 and 3.3 times higher than that of pure reduced GO film, respectively. In addition, the effect of environmental relative humidity on the mechanical properties of bioinspired nanocomposites is also investigated, and is consistent with previous theoretical predictions. Moreover, this nacre-inspired nanocomposite also displays high electrical conductivity of 108.9 S cm(-1). These excellent physical properties allow this type of nacre-inspired nanocomposite to be used in many applications, such as flexible electrodes, aerospace applications, and artificial muscles etc. This nacre-inspired strategy also opens an avenue for constructing integrated high performance graphene-based nanocomposites in the near future.

Abstract:A crucial requirement for most engineering materials is the excellent balance of strength and toughness. By mimicking the hybrid hierarchical structure in nacre, a kind of nacre-like paper based on binary hybrid graphene oxide (GO)/sodium alginate (SA) building blocks has been successfully fabricated. Systematic evaluation for the mechanical property in different (dry/wet) environment/after thermal annealing shows a perfect combination of high strength and toughness. Both of the parameters are nearly many-times higher than those of similar materials because of the synergistic strengthening/toughening enhancement from the binary GO/SA hybrids. The successful fabrication route offers an excellent approach to design advanced strong integrated nacre-like composite materials, which can be applied in tissue engineering, protection, aerospace, and permeable membranes for separation and delivery.

Abstract:In nacre, the excellent mechanical properties of materials are highly dependent on their intricate hierarchical structures. However, strengthening and toughening effects induced by the buried inorganic-organic interfaces actually originate from various minerals/ions with small amounts, and have not drawn enough attention yet. Herein, we present a typical class of artificial nacres, fabricated by graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) polymer, and multivalent cationic (M(n+)) ions, in which the M(n+) ions cross-linking with plenty of oxygen-containing groups serve as the reinforcing "evocator", working together with other cooperative interactions (e.g., hydrogen (H)-bonding) to strengthen the GO/CMC interfaces. When compared with the pristine GO/CMC paper, the cross-linking strategies dramatically reinforce the mechanical properties of our artificial nacres. This special reinforcing effect opens a promising route to strengthen and toughen materials to be applied in aerospace, tissue engineering, and wearable electronic devices, which also has implication for better understanding of the role of these minerals/ions in natural materials for the mechanical improvement.

Abstract:Strength and toughness have been often considered as mutually exclusive properties in many synthetic materials. Natural materials like nacre have overcome this conflict by optimizing internal architecture at the nanoscale. In this work, nacre-inspired graphene oxide (GO)-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite is fabricated, which has a "brick and mortar" microstructure and enhanced interfacial strength. It has a tensile strength of 261 ± 7 MPa and toughness of 5 ± 0.2 MJ m−3, which are 55% and 42% greater than conventional GO/PMMA nanocomposites. In addition, the nanocomposite has excellent stability in wet environments. This work, therefore, provides a facile method to fabricate novel nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties.
