Abstract:This paper focuses on the application of middleware technology to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). It describes the design components, and construction of an ITS message queuing (ITS-MQ) middleware. A Petri net is used to verify the protocol used in the ITS-MQ.

Abstract:The general concepts in message queuing and message-oriented middleware(MOM) are discussed. The essential elements and model of the queuing theory are analyzed in detail. Then, after puting forward and analyzing the basic formulas of the queuing theory, the applicable model for message queue middleware is probed into. Some important formulas used in the designing of the message queue middleware are also elucidated. Finally, a case of designing the message queue middleware adopting queuing model we put forward, which is used in the freeway toll system of ITS, is studied.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed numerous technical breakthroughs in electronics, computing, sensing, robotics, control, signal processing, and communications. These have significantly advanced the state of applications of intelligent transportation systems. More recently, as one leading effort toward the cyber-physical-social system, the concept of intelligent transportation spaces was proposed to further improve the vehicles, traffic, and transportation safety, efficiency and sustainability. ITSp integrate not only various ITS modules, but also pedestrians, vehicles, roadside infrastructures, traffic management centers, sensors, and satellites. With distributed and pervasive intelligence, ITSp clearly impose some stringent requirements on the information exchange among all entities within the ITSp, in terms of the information availability, reliability, fidelity, and timeliness. These requirements, together with the high mobility of vehicles and the highly variable network topology, make the communications and networking for ITSp very challenging. This article will introduce the concept of ITSp and analyze possible communication technology candidates for ITSp. Further discussions will also be provided at the end of this article.

Abstract:This paper presents firstly that the trend of transportation systems is not only the ITS but also integrated transportation systems. The new viewpoint is dissertated on three aspects. Firstly, considering of the category the ITS belonging to, the passage analyzes the status of the ITS. Secondly, thinking about the causes of the traffic problems, the paper also takes the effect range of ITS into account. At last, taking the traffic control and traffic inducement for example, the article shows that the traffic system must be integrated. And then, the information problem of the ITS is discussed from three points, that is the relationship between information and intelligence, the problem about quantity and quality of information, and the need of the intelligence by the development of IT. Afterwards, through the examples of 7 aspects, the ignorance of the complexity of traffic systems is explained. Finally, the necessity of using the methodology of system science to study on traffic system is raised.

Abstract:Vehicle electronic systems and roadside equipment are the two important foundations for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). From the data exchange and scheduling points of view, we look at the development trend of ITS and applications of pervasive computing infrastructures. The use of spontaneous networking (SN) as an appropriate infrastructure is presented and analyzed in detail. Finally, several SN research projects including ours are described briefly.

Abstract:In this paper, two parallel worldwide tends of transportation systems are pointed out: Integrated Transportation System, Intelligent Transport System. The necessity of Integrated Transportation System is discussed. The connotation of Integrated Transportation System should be understood as follows: for optimizing of transportation resource, for integrating of travel demand management, and for including of total processes of transportation systems. The extension of Integrated Transportation System is presented. The paper focuses on the two problems: the relationship between Integrated Transportation System and ITS, the relationship between ITS and Traffic Engineering. The perspective which the non - technical factors should be separated from ITS is presented.

Abstract:ITSGrid is an undergoing joint engineering project designed and developed by advanCed Computing aNd sysTem (CCNT) Lab in Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Enjoyor Electronics Co. Ltd (Enjoyor). The new features of ITSGrid are originated from two important research projects -- DartGrid and DartFlow, and one key engineering project -- JTang Application Server, in CCNT Lab. Its goal is to build an integrated intelligent transportation information and service platform (ITISP), to integrate traffic data resources collected by Enjoyor and cooperate existing ITS subsystems and services deployed by Enjoyor, finally serve for transportation construction in China. During building this project, we utilize systematically the Grid technology, the Semantic Web technology, the Web Service technology, the Messaging Oriented Middleware technology.

Abstract:After the communication system in ITS is introduced briefly, its hierarchy of the communication system is presented. By analyzing the strong and weak points of standardized fieldbus, a new hierarchy communication system framework is presented in the paper, in which the widely accepted standards of higher layer are kept unchanged while the lower layer taking a new solution based on modified fieldbus. In order to demonstrate the feasibility, a prototype system is introduced.

Abstract:Over the past decades, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have developed and deployed in order to improve transportation safety and mobility, reduces environmental impact, promotes sustainable transportation development and enhances productivity. ITS combines high technology and improvements in information systems, communication, sensors, controllers and advanced mathematical methods with the conventional world of transportation infrastructure. As an interdisciplinary research field, it is difficult to have a clear picture about the whole system for a novice researcher. This paper 1) proposes an ITS architecture, which is based on the requirement and technology at the present stage; 2) sort out the bottleneck issue that lie behind intelligent transportation research; 3) explores the future prospect of the ITS and research focus as new technologies become available.

Abstract:Information society requires to establish the Intelligent Integrated Transportation System (IITS). The important approach to integrate many Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) subsystems is the Integrated Transportation Information Platform(ITIP). In this paper, Firstly the significance of ITIP is analyzed. Currently in China research and establishment of ITIP is urgent. After analyzing the functions of ITIP, a Distributed System Architecture of ITIP is presented, which is based on the Data Processing technique. Then the important basic of IIP establishment-Data Processing technique, including data fusing technology, Data warehouse technology, Data compression technology and Data Mining technology is discussed. In the end the advantages of the ITIP and its development in China are analyzed.

Abstract:Summary form only given. With increasing demands of effective and efficient transportation from our society, the transportation issue has become a noticeable obstacle to the economic development for all countries and regions to a great extend. ITS (intelligent transportation systems) technology is brought forward and considered as an effective approach that promises to alleviate many transportation problems such as traffic congestion, high accident rate, air pollution, and improve safety and reliability on existing roadway system. However, ITS architectures do not give proper answers to some important problems in ITS such as how to integrate heterogeneous data on the semantic level, how to manage dynamic business process, how to cooperate ITS subsystems among different domains, how to communicate among traffic control center and road sensor network, etc. Hence, a fundamental shift in approach is needed to effectively resolve these complex problems. Fortunately, grid technology, semantic Web technology, Web service technology, messaging oriented middleware (MOM) technology bring us great chance to build a integrated platform for ITS to solve the before-mentioned issues. Grid computing is an ideal technology to realize resource sharing in distributed heterogeneity environments. Semantic Web offers a great opportunity to support data semantization based on a domain-specific ontology database. Process coordination based on Web service gives a unified way to cooperate ITS subsystems among different organizations. Messaging oriented middleware enables distributed communication that is loosely coupled, reliable, and asynchronous in complex network environment. In this paper, we explore four technologies to build a novel integrated intelligent transportation information and service platform to realize traffic data semantization, traffic resource sharing, cooperation traffic process management, and traffic sensor network communication. As a result, a key project for ITISP, ITSGrid, was started up by Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Enjoyor Electronics Co. Ltd in 2005. Abstract:Since the concept of ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) was put forward in 1991 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, it has been viewed as a promising way to tackle modern traffic problems. The creation of ITS depends on the integration of four components: travelers, control centers, intelligent vehicles and field infrastructure, which calls for effective communication architectures. To address the requests, U.S. came up with four communication systems as table 1: WAWC (Wide Area Wireless Communications, FFC (Fixed-point to Fixed-point Communications), IVC (Inter-vehicle Communications), and DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications), among which, IVC is in the earliest research phase (US Department of Transportation, 1997).

Abstract:The advent of Internet technology introduces a revolution to software application and development paradigms. Traditional software development and application patterns have been shifted to Internet-based service sharing and collaboration among partners all over the Internet. This imposes new challenges and complexity in the lifecycle of software development, deployment and maintenance. Middleware, an intermediate layer to abstract the homogeneity and hide the difference of underlying systems, can be used to reduce the complexity for Internet application development. In this paper, we exploit the needs of middleware support for Internet-based applications from a service perspective. We investigate the potential requirements and features of Internetware, and the state-of-the-art solutions. We also analyze the remaining issues, the challenges and potential future research directions.

Abstract:The Inter-City Transport Integrated Information Platform (IC-TIIP) was designed to provide a broad spectrum of operational data from multiple sources strategically placed thoughout the system as the key input to the Inter-City Intelligent Transport System. A new architecture developed for the IC-TIIP was developed based on a virtual data warehouse and eXtensible Markup Language (XML). This paper describes the IC-TIIP system architecture in which the virtual data warehouse receives a wide range of data from many sources and analyzes the function and advantages of the virtual data warehouse based on the complex real-time distribution characteristics of the IC-TIIP. The results show that this open, flexible platform has good expandability so that it can be used for transportation systems.
