Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.

Abstract:The spectroscopic studies of layered rare-earth hydroxides (LRHs) have aroused great interests owing to the unique features of combing rare-earth ions with diverse anions. In this work, some anions were incorporated into layered lutetium-dysprosium hydroxides (LLuH:Dy) by the hydrothermal and ion exchange process, in which Dy 3+ ion acted as the emission center. The results manifest that the assemblies possess clearly lamellar structure and flake shape, and emit the characteristic yellow and blue light of Dy 3+ under ultraviolet excitation. The inorganic WO 4 2− intercalated LLuH:Dy shows enhanced luminescence under the excitation with 280 nm which originates from the O–W charge transfer band. The more fantastic is that the assembly produces bright cyan light due to the appropriate yellow/blue light intensity ratio, and can transform into transparent and flexible film by mixing with certain polymer. Moreover, the intercalation of organic chromophore benzenetetracarboxylic anion into LLuH:Dy also greatly promotes the Dy 3+ luminescence, and can easily form the nanosheet colloid through combining with surfactant dodecyl sulfonate. The colloid is very stable at ambient temperature and displays excellent selectivity, sensitivity and accuracy for detecting metal Co 2+ in aqueous media, constructing a superior fluorescence sensor for Co 2+ with a detection limit of 2.65 × 10 −7 mol/L. This work expands the photofunctional performances of LRHs in the form of transparent film and colloidal state.

Abstract:Tunable luminescence‐assisted information storage and encryption holds increasing significance in today's society. A promising approach to incorporating the benefits of both organic long persistent luminescent (LPL) materials and rare‐earth (RE) luminescence lies in utilizing organic host materials to sensitize RE luminescence, as well as hydrogen‐bonded organic framework (HOF) phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer to RE compound luminescence. This work introduces a one‐pot, in situ pyrolytic condensation method, achieved through high‐temperature melting calcination, to synthesize lanthanide ion‐doped HOF materials. This method circumvents the drawback of molecular triplet energy annihilation, enabling the creation of organic LPL materials with RE characteristics. The HOF material serves as the host, exhibiting blue phosphorescence and cyan LPL. By fine‐tuning the doping amount, the composite material U‐Tb‐100 achieves green LPL with a luminescent quantum yield of 56.4%, and an LPL duration of approximately 2‐3 s, demonstrating tunable persistence. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, spectral analysis, and theoretical calculation unveil that U‐Tb‐100 exhibits exceptional quantum yield and long‐lived luminescence primarily due to the efficient sensitization of U monomer to RE ions and the PRET process between U and RE complexes. This ingenious strategy not only expands the repertoire of HOF materials but also facilitates the design of multifunctional LPL materials.

Abstract:In this work, we have successfully designed ordered luminescent multilayer films based on La-doped nonmagnetic or magnetic inorganic nanostructure with electronic microenvironment (EM). The inorganic nanosheets with opposite charge can assemble EM between the interlayers. At the same time, their elements on nanosheets of layer double hydroxides (LDHs) are facile to be replaced so that we can introduce transition metal or lanthanide elements. Besides, ferromagnetic effect (FE) can be formed in this microenvironment due to introducing transition metal on LDHs nanosheets. As a result, we confirm that EM, FE, and doping La element in the LDHs can affect the vibration of backbone of chromophores and then prolong the luminescent lifetime, which suggests a new pathway for developing the novel light-emitting thin films.

Abstract:The layered rare-earth hydroxides LEuxTb1-xHs nanosheets were stably isolated in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels via a freeze-thaw method (x: 0∼1) due to the hydrogen bond interactions between LEuxTb1-xHs and PVA. The energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ and the Eu3+ concentration quenching effect were inhibited in LEuxTb1-xHs/PVA hydrogels, resulting in the independent photoluminescence (PL) emissions of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in and a corresponding multicolor PL.

Abstract:For the first time, undoped and Yb3+/Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm) codoped orthorhombic lutetium oxyfluorides have been fabricated via a facile stepwise route involving room temperature co-precipitation and a subsequent thermal decomposition procedure. The phase formation, crystal structure, particle morphologies and up-conversion (UC) luminescence were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, IR, thermal and luminescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the intermediate Lu(CO3)(1-x)(OH)(y)F1+2x-y precursor plays an essential role in the formation of the final metastable LunOn-1Fn+2 Vernier phase. Multicolour up-conversion has been achieved in the Yb3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ codoped samples under near-infrared excitation (lambda = 980 nm) and, notably, the Yb3+/Er3+ codoping yields an almost single-band red emission at about 660 nm. A short Ln(3+)-Ln(3+) distance combined with the multiple doping sites in the low symmetry (C-1 and C-s) host lattice are considered responsible for the effective energy transfer and, therefore, the intense up-conversion emission. The present work, together with previous studies on the UC performance of Vernier phase yttrium oxyfluorides, illustrates that the Vernier phase oxyfluorides are promising up-conversion host materials for lanthanide ions in a variety of applications such as bioprobes and chromatic displays.

Abstract:With a blue distyrylarylene derivative, 4,4′-bis(2,2-di(2-methoxyphenyl)ethenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBS) as emitting material, double-layer and triple-layer electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated. For the device using tris-(1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-isobutyryl-5-pyrozolone)-bis(triphenyl phosphine oxide) terbium (Tb(PMIP)3(TPPO)2) as the electron-transporting layer, blue EL emission with a maximum luminance of 253cd/m2 was achieved at 19V. The difference of Tb(PMIP)3(TPPO)2 and tris(8-hydroxyquinolinate)aluminum (AlQ) as the electron-transporting materials in these devices were compared and discussed.

Abstract:Transparent organic–inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)3Phen, Tb(Sal)3) were prepared via the sol–gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic–inorganic semi-interpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA–SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes.

Abstract:Rare-earth ions Tb3+ and La3+ were used as a bridge to improve the energy transfer from the polymer to an Eu complex. The material Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen was synthesized and used as the emission layer in the device: ITO/PVK:Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen/Alq/Al. The two device were compared in detail and it was found that the device using La0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen as the emission material had better monochromatic characteristics with the maximal brightness of 102 cd/m2 and the colour coordinates x = 0.55 and y = 0.36.

Abstract:Several ultrathin luminescent Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films have been prepared by using the subphase containing the rare earth ions (Eu3+, Tb3+). The effect of the rare earth ions on the monolayer of 2-n-heptadecanoylbenzoic acid (HBA) was investigated. IR and UV spectra showed the rare earth ions were bound to the carboxylic acid head groups and the coordination took place between the polar head group and the rare earth ions. The layer structure of the LB films was demonstrated by low-angle X-ray diffraction. UV absorbance intensity increases linearly with the number of LB films layers, which indicate that the LB films are homogeneously deposited. The LB films can give off strong fluorescence, and the signal can be detected from a single layer. The characteristic luminescence behaviors of LB films have been discussed compared with those of the complexes.

Abstract:We report a highly tunable photoluminescence of rare-earth (europium, Eu3+) doped layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by an organic photofunctional anion, courmarin-3-carboxylate (C3C). Novel Eu3+-doped LDHs intercalated by C3C (ZnAlEu-LDH-C3C) with high purity and crystallinity have been successfully synthesized via an interlayer ion exchange process using Eu3+ doped LDH (ZnAlEu-LDH-NO3) as a precursor. A bilayer arrangement with nearly perpendicular orientation was deduced for the C3C anions in the LDH interlayer space. Compared with the precursor, ZnAlEu-LDH-C3C shows a strong UV absorbance and an interesting photoluminescence function, possibly due to an interfacial energy transfer process between the interlayer C3C anions and the Eu3+ within the LDH lattices. The photoluminescent spectra denote a lower symmetry of the coordinating environment around Eu3+ within ZnAlEu-LDH-C3C. More importantly, the photoluminescence of ZnAlEu-LDH-C3C could be highly tuned by simply adjusting the structural constituents (including the content of Eu3+ or C3C) or the excited wavelength. These findings open new avenues to prepare tunable photoluminescent materials and further have potential applications for optical devices.

Abstract:Yb–Er, Yb–Ho and Yb–Tm co-doped LaF3 IR-to-visible upconversion fluorescent nanocrystals with well-crystallized hexagonal phases were synthesized by a solvothermal technique, which was based on the decomposition of rare-earth trifluoroacetates. During this reaction the generation of fluoride ions and the nucleation of the LaF3 occurred almost simultaneously. Through a phase transition procedure, nanoplates with well-crystallized hexagon shape and an average edge length of 20–30 nm were obtained because the nucleation and growth processes were slow. The size, morphology and phase transition of the rare-earth fluorides were discussed in relation to solvents, reaction time and temperature and a reaction mechanism was proposed. Furthermore, these nanoplates could be easily dispersed in organic solutions and formed a transparent colloidal solution. Under 980 nm IR excitation, multicolor emission bands can be observed for different codopants, which show potential applications as color displays, light-emitting diodes, optical storage, optoelectronics and biolabels.

Abstract:Unexpected Sc/Ln codoped rare earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) molecular alloys (MAs) based on an oxalic acid ligands were obtained. Calcination of the RE-MOFs MAs gave the corresponding codoped rare earth oxides a strong and nearly pure red color upconversion luminescence. It allows the resulting lanthanide ion (Ln3+) doped upconversion materials a wide range of applications from optical communications to disease diagnosis. Moreover, the pyrolysis RE-MOFs MAs precursor has demonstrated to be an effective preparation method for a uniform Ln-doped Sc2O3 system.

Abstract:A biomolecule-assisted synthetic route has been developed for the preparation of orthorhombic lanthanide hydroxycarbonate crystals with interesting assembly features, using various amino acids as capping ligands for the synthesis. Reaction mechanism to the materials is proposed. The biomolecule additives played an important role in modifying the microstructures, and the morphology of crystals could be spindly, spherical, and dumbbell-like. Thermal analysis indicated that the as-prepared cerium hydroxycarbonate was stable below 240°C, and NdOHCO3 was stable below 400°C. The CeOHCO3 sample showed intensive broad band emission centered at 370nm, which may be used as a next-generation black-light material to control pests. Fluorescence of the materials is dependent on the structure. Therefore, simply alternating reaction parameters would vary microstructures and tune the optical properties of the materials.

Lanthanide Complex/Polymer Composite Optical Resin with Intense Narrow Band Emission, High Transparency and Good Mechanical Performance

Abstract:Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

Abstract:Rare earth ions (Dy3+ and Sm3+) doped luminescence materials have been attracted more interest owing to their excellent luminous properties. Here, Ba2YZrO6:R (R = Dy3+, Sm3+, Dy3+/Sm3+) are prepared in air by using high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal phase and purity are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The luminous properties are studied by using optical spectrometer. Green emission of Ba2YZrO6:Dy3+ with excitation at 260 nm is observed. Ba2YZrO6:Sm3+ with excitation 271 and 407 nm shows yellow and red-orange emission, respectively. Under excitation 271 nm, Ba2YZrO6:Dy3+, Sm3+ show emission from green to yellow with increasing Sm3+ concentration from 2 to 10 mol%. Ba2YZrO6:Dy3+, Sm3+ with excitation 407 nm glow yellow light. We investigate the concentration dependent spectra and confirm the optimal Dy3+ and Sm3+ concentrations. We estimate the concentration quenching mechanism in Ba2YZrO6:R (R = Dy3+, Sm3+) and Ba2YZrO6:Dy3+, Sm3+. The luminous mechanism and energy transfer process are analyzed by using the energy level transitions of Dy3+ and Sm3+ ions.

Color-tunable upconversion luminescence of Yb3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ tri-doped ferroelectric BaTiO3 materials

Abstract:Tunable upconversion (UC) multicolor luminescence is observed from Yb3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ tri-doped ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) materials. By control of dopant concentrations, the lanthanide-doped BTO powders are capable of generating various UC spectra and color tunability. A white-light emission is achieved through an optimal design. Strong UC luminescence is also observed in the lanthanide-doped BTO thin-films grown on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate, which can retain well-defined hysteresis loops with a remnant polarization (2Pr) of 17.8 μC/cm2. These findings open the possibility of lanthanide-doped BTO as multifunctional materials, in which both luminescent and ferroelectric properties co-exist.

Abstract:Polarized and up-conversion luminescent films have great potential for use in the design of various optical devices. In this work, we report transparent and flexible thin films based on alternate layer-by-layer assembly of sulfonated Eu- and Tb-based lanthanide complexes (LCs) and Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets. UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy showed an orderly growth of the two types of thin films (TFs) upon increasing the number of deposition cycles. XRD, AFM and SEM measurements indicated that the films feature periodic layered structures as well as uniformsurface morphology. Moreover, by combining the assembly of both the Eu- and/or Tb-based LC systems, these TFs can exhibit well-defined one- and two-color polarized fluorescence with high polarization anisotropy. In addition, it was observed that the two TFs exhibited obvious red and green up-conversion emission upon excitation by near-IR laser light. Therefore, this work provides a facile way to develop new types of LC TFs with both up-conversion and color-tunable luminescence, which have great potential applications for the design of various LC-based optical films and flexible devices.
Luminescent Thin Film of Doped Terbium Complex Obtained by Sol-Gel Method

Abstract:The transparent luminescent thin films of doped terbium complex were obtained by sol-gel method. The result indicates that rare earth carboxylates with poor solubility can be homogeneously doped into sol matrix in situ. The fluorescence spectra show that the thin film material emits the characteristic narrow band emission of Tb3+ under the UV excitation.
