Abstract:We analyze century‐long daily temperature and precipitation records for stations in Europe west of 60°E. A set of climatic indices derived from the daily series, mainly focusing on extremes, is defined. Linear trends in these indices are assessed over the period 1901–2000. Average trends, for 75 stations mostly representing Europe west of 20°E, show a warming for all temperature indices. Winter has, on average, warmed more (∼1.0°C/100 yr) than summer (∼0.8°C), both for daily maximum (TX) and minimum (TN) temperatures. Overall, the warming of TX in winter was stronger in the warm tail than in the cold tail (1.6 and 1.5°C for 98th and 95th, but ∼1.0°C for 2nd, 5th and 10th percentiles). There are, however, large regional differences in temperature trend patterns. For summer, there is a tendency for stronger warming, both for TX and TN, in the warm than in the cold tail only in parts of central Europe. Winter precipitation totals, averaged over 121 European stations north of 40°N, have increased significantly by ∼12% per 100 years. Trends in 90th, 95th and 98th percentiles of daily winter precipitation have been similar. No overall long‐term trend occurred in summer precipitation totals, but there is an overall weak (statistically insignificant and regionally dependent) tendency for summer precipitation to have become slightly more intense but less common. Data inhomogeneities and relative sparseness of station density in many parts of Europe preclude more robust conclusions. It is of importance that new methods are developed for homogenizing daily data.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we aim to better understand the current and future projections of precipitation extremes in Europe in the context of climatic variability over a long-term period from the last millennium to the end of the twenty-first century. The daily gridded precipitation data from five global climate models (GCMs) of phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) are chosen to investigate natural variability and precipitation extremes during the last millennium (850–1849), the historical (1850–2005) period, and two representative concentration pathway (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) scenarios (2006–99). First, the seasonal and annual precipitation and extreme statistics from GCMs are evaluated using reconstruction and observation. Second, the spatial and temporal patterns of extreme precipitation from GCMs are investigated from the last millennium to the end of the twenty-first century. Meanwhile, the characteristic changes of extreme precipitation for the five regions of Europe are further analyzed. The results revealed the following: GCMs underestimate extreme precipitation and overestimate mean precipitation compared with the observations from European Climate Assessment and Dataset (ECA&D); the majority of Europe except southern Europe will most likely have large magnitude increases in the extreme precipitation and mean precipitation in the future under both RCP scenarios; there is no systematic change of precipitation extremes from the last millennium to the historical period from all GCMs; and larger magnitude increases are shown in 100- and 200-yr than in 5- and 10-yr return period precipitation from both RCP scenarios. In addition, short-duration extreme precipitation will most likely increase more than longer-duration extremes.

Abstract:Knowledge about long‐term changes in climate extremes is vital to better understand multidecadal climate variability and long‐term changes and to place today's extreme events in a historical context. While global changes in temperature and precipitation extremes since the midtwentieth century are well studied, knowledge about century‐scale changes is limited. This paper analyses a range of largely independent observations‐based data sets covering 1901–2010 for long‐term changes and interannual variability in daily scale temperature and precipitation extremes. We compare across data sets for consistency to ascertain our confidence in century‐scale changes in extremes. We find consistent warming trends in temperature extremes globally and in most land areas over the past century. For precipitation extremes we find global tendencies toward more intense rainfall throughout much of the twentieth century; however, local changes are spatially more variable. While global time series of the different data sets agree well after about 1950, they often show different changes during the first half of the twentieth century. In regions with good observational coverage, gridded observations and reanalyses agree well throughout the entire past century. Simulations with an atmospheric model suggest that ocean temperatures and sea ice may explain up to about 50% of interannual variability in the global average of temperature extremes, and about 15% in the global average of moderate precipitation extremes, but local correlations are mostly significant only in low latitudes. Unprecedented Europe Heat in June–July 2019: Risk in the Historical and Future Context

Abstract:Western‐central Europe experienced the most severe June–July heat on record in 2019, with several heatwaves occurring over the most densely populated regions. Highest 3‐day averaged daily mean temperature in June–July averaged over the region exceeds normal by 4.7°C, which is estimated to be a 1‐in‐283‐year event over the 1950–2014 climate. The driver and future likelihood of this extreme heat in a changing climate have drawn extensive attention. Based on the newly released climate model data from the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), we find that anthropogenic climate change has caused a sevenfold increase in the likelihood of the extreme heat over 1950–2014 climate, and even a 23‐fold increase since 1980s. Such extreme heat will become more frequent in the future, with return periods of 1.8–7.2 years under future emission and societal development scenarios. Without sufficient adaptation strategies, such extreme heat would become more widespread, long‐lasting, and severe over Europe.
Climate of the Pyrenees: Extremes indices and long-term trends

Abstract:We utilized an extensive, multisource, cross-border dataset of daily meteorological observations from over 1500 stations in the Pyrenees, spanning from the mid-20th century to 2020, to examine the spatial and temporal climate patterns. Our focus was on 17 indices related to extreme precipitation and temperature events across the mountain range. The original data underwent rigorous quality control and homogenization processes, employing a comprehensive workflow that included spatial modeling based on environmental predictors. This process yielded two main outcomes: 1) a high-resolution gridded dataset (1 km2) of daily precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature from 1981 to 2020, allowing for a detailed analysis of spatial variations; and 2) an evaluation of long-term annual and seasonal trends from 1959 to 2020, using selection of high-quality data series that were homogenized to preserve their temporal structure and coherence. The findings revealed a clear elevation-related pattern in temperature indices (with the exception of tropical nights, which were predominantly observed on the Mediterranean side) and a distinct north-south latitudinal disparity in precipitation, turning longitudinal when focusing on extreme precipitation events. Overall, there was a notable and significant warming trend of 0.2 to 0.4 °C per decade, and a non-significant change of precipitation, with the exception of the southern and Mediterranean regions, where there was a notable decrease, approximately -3 % per decade, observed on an annual basis.
Projected changes in frequency of compound events of strong wind and low temperature in EURO-CORDEX climate models

Abstract:Compound events of weather extremes considerably affect various sectors of human society and natural environment and therefore it is essential to understand projected changes of their characteristics in the future climate. We focus on the combination of low temperature and high wind velocity, because their compound effect strongly influences human thermal comfort in cold weather, as characterized by the wind chill factor. In our study, we analyse frequency of this extreme events and projected changes of their characteristics in simulations of RCMs from the EURO-CORDEX project. We investigate a set of 9 simulations of 3 different RCMs driven by 3 different global climate models which allow us to analyse the influence of driving data on the RCM&#8217;s outputs. We focus on the Central European domain defined between 48&#8211;52&#176;N and 10&#8211;19&#176;E. The frequency of the compound events from historical simulations over 1970-2100 are compared to the projected frequencies under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios for the end of the 21st century (2070-2100). Since local climate is relatively tightly linked to a large-scale atmospheric circulation over Europe in winter, we also evaluate links of the compound events to the atmospheric circulation.

Abstract:We analyze the occurrence and the values of record-breaking temperatures in daily and monthly temperature observations. Our aim is to better understand and quantify the statistics of temperature records in the context of global warming. Similar to earlier work we employ a simple mathematical model of independent and identically distributed random variables with a linearly growing expectation value. This model proved to be useful in predicting the increase (decrease) in upper (lower) temperature records in a warming climate. Using both station and re-analysis data from Europe and the United States we further investigate the statistics of temperature records and the validity of this model. The most important new contribution in this article is an analysis of the statistics of record values for our simple model and European reanalysis data. We estimate how much the mean values and the distributions of record temperatures are affected by the large scale warming trend. In this context we consider both the values of records that occur at a certain time and the values of records that have a certain record number in the series of record events. We compare the observational data both to simple analytical computations and numerical simulations. We find that it is more difficult to describe the values of record breaking temperatures within the framework of our linear drift model. Observations from the summer months fit well into the model with Gaussian random variables under the observed linear warming, in the sense that record breaking temperatures are more extreme in the summer. In winter however a significant asymmetry of the daily temperature distribution hides the effect of the slow warming trends. Therefore very extreme cold records are still possible in winter. This effect is even more pronounced if one considers only data from subpolar regions.

Current and future occurrences of health-relevant, compound heat and ozone pollution events in six European ozone-temperature regions

Abstract:Air pollution and heat events present two major health risks, both already independently posing a significant threat to human health and life. High levels of ground-level ozone (O3) and air temperature often coincide due to the underlying physical relationships between both variables. The most severe health outcome is in general associated with the co-occurrence of both hazards (e.g. Hertig et al. 2020), since concurrent elevated levels of temperature and ozone concentrations represent a twofold exposure and can lead to a risk beyond the sum of the individual effects. Consequently, in the current contribution, a compound approach considering both hazards simultaneously as so-called ozone-temperature (o-t-)events is chosen by jointly analyzing elevated ground-level ozone concentrations and air temperature levels in Europe.Previous studies already point to the fact that the relationship of underlying synoptic and meteorological drivers with one or both of these health stressors as well as the correlation between both variables vary with the location of sites and seasons (e.g. Otero et al. 2016; Jahn, Hertig 2020). Therefore, a hierarchical clustering analysis is applied to objectively divide the study domain in regions of homogeneous, similar ground-level ozone and temperature characteristics (o-t-regions). Statistical models to assess the synoptic and large-scale meteorological mechanisms which represent main drivers of concurrent o-t-events are developed for each identified o-t-region.Compound elevated ozone concentration and air temperature events are expected to become more frequent due to climate change in many parts of Europe (e.g. Jahn, Hertig 2020; Hertig 2020). Revealing trends in extreme heatwave intensity: Applying the UNSEEN approach to Nordic countries

Abstract:The increase in heatwave intensity, causing heat stress and crop failures in many regions is a concerning impact of global climate change. In northern Europe, significant interannual variability previously prevented robust assessments of trends in heat extremes. However, with a large-ensemble seasonal hindcasts and archived forecasts dataset covering 1981-2022 multiple realisations of weather patterns can be pooled and assessed. What are recent trends of extreme temperatures? Has the risk for a 100-year heatwave event increased in Northern Europe? We apply the UNSEEN (UNprecedented Simulated Extremes using ENsembles) approach to assess the credibility of the model ensemble and use non-stationary extreme value analysis to quantify recent trends in extreme 3-day heatwaves in late spring and early summer (May to July). We find significant non-stationarity and positive trends in annual maximum heatwave intensity. We also show that heatwave volatility, i.e., the risk of clearly outstanding heatwaves, is highest in central Scandinavia.

Abstract:Over the past decades, droughts and heatwaves frequently appeared in Western Europe (45°–65°N, 10°W–20°E) during boreal summer, causing huge impacts on human society and ecosystems. Although these extremes are projected to increase in both frequency and intensity under a warming climate, our knowledge of their interdecadal variations and causes is relatively limited. Here we show that the droughts and heatwaves in Western Europe have shifted in their trends in the last decade: for 1979–2012, wind speed and precipitation have both strengthened in Western Europe; for 2012–2020, however, Western Europe have experienced declined wind speed, decreased precipitation, and higher air temperature, leading to more frequent droughts and heatwaves there. Recent changes in the WE climate and extremes are related to the variations of the North Atlantic westerly jet stream. In 1979–2012 (2012–2020), the westerly jet stream shifted equatorward (poleward), which enhanced (reduced) transportation of water vapor fluxes from the North Atlantic Ocean to the European land areas, resulting in wetter (drier) surface in Western Europe. Further analysis suggests that phase changes in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation could have played a key role in regulating the position of the jet stream, providing important implications for decadal predictions of the Western Europe summertime climate and weather extremes.

Trends in intraseasonal temperature variability in Europe: Comparison of station data with gridded data and reanalyses

Abstract:The intraseasonal temperature variability tends to decrease in Europe in winter (see the top figure). This is especially true for DTD (day‐to‐day temperature change) and LAG (temporal autocorrelation of temperature), while for SD (standard deviation of temperature) only three out of five datasets exhibit a decrease. Differences between data sources in determining variability trends are the main concern of this paper and are quantified in the bottom figure. Trends in temperature variability are often referred to have higher effect on temperature extremes than trends in the mean. We investigate trends in three complementary measures of intraseasonal temperature variability: (a) standard deviation of mean daily temperature (SD), (b) mean absolute value of day‐to‐day temperature change (DTD) and (c) 1‐day lagged temporal autocorrelation of temperature (LAG). It is a well‐established fact that different types of data (station, gridded, reanalyses) provide different temperature characteristics and particularly their trends. Moreover, we have uncovered that trends in measures of variability are considerably sensitive to data inhomogeneities. Therefore, we use five different datasets, one station based (ECA&D), one gridded (EOBS) and three reanalyses (JRA‐55, NCEP/NCAR, 20CR), and compare them. The period from 1961 to 2014 where all datasets overlap is examined, and the linear regression method is utilized to calculate trends of investigated measures in summer and winter. Intraseasonal temperature variability tends to decrease in winter, especially in eastern and northern Europe, where trends below −7%·decade−1 are detected for all measures. Decreases in DTD and LAG (indicating increase in persistence) prevail also in summer while summer SD tends to increase. The increase in the width of temperature distribution and the simultaneous increase in persistence indicate a tendency towards the rise in the frequency of extended extreme events in summer. Unlike previous studies, our results imply that reanalyses are not the least accurate in determining trends. JRA‐55 appears to be the least diverging from other datasets, while the largest discrepancies are detected for DTD at station data.

Abstract:Trends of extreme temperature indices show more consistent, robust and widespread significant results according with the observed warming of the region. Significant extreme precipitation indices trends are more localized, and therefore harder to analyze, but it seems that one robust result from several indices is the trend toward more intense extreme precipitation events in Costa Rica. Precipitation and temperature extremes from daily data indexed using the CLIMDEX methodology were calculated over the Central American region. The data comprises the coarsened versions of the Climate Hazards and Infrared Precipitation with stations (CHIRPs) and the corresponding data set for temperature (CHIRTs) from the year 1981 to 2020 and 1983 to 2016, respectively. The objective is to detect trend patterns in extremes in recent periods, use novel statistical techniques for assessing the trend significance and study the monthly and annual trends for each of the indices. Trends of extreme temperature indices show more consistent, robust and widespread significant results according with the observed warming of the region. Significant extreme precipitation indices trends are more localized, and therefore harder to analyse, but it seems that one robust result from several indices is the trend toward more intense extreme precipitation events in Costa Rica. Abstract:Extreme weather events, such as those associated with winds and precipitation, result in billions of euros in damages annually. While changes in extreme precipitation due to global warming have already been detected at sub-continental scales, their complex characteristics make them a challenges to asses at more regional scales. Extreme winds present an even greater challenge as the varying dynamical response to global warming exhibits high levels of uncertainty. This situation is complicated by local scale interactions with orography, cities, land-sea contrasts, etc. The dataset presented here attempts to address these challenges and provide information that will allow robust assessment of extreme winds and precipitation (maximum five day precipitation). We achieve this by leveraging a large ensemble (52 members) of high resolution (12 km) EURO-CORDEX simulations. The dataset will be of value, not only to the scientific community, but also practitioners in the public (e.g., municipal planners, government agencies) and private sectors (e.g., insurers and reinsurers).
Historical global and regional spatiotemporal patterns in daily temperature

Abstract:The abrupt increase in surface air temperature over the last few decades has received abundant scholarly and popular attention. However, less attention has focused on the specific nature of the warming spatially and seasonally, using high-resolution reanalysis output based on historical temperature observations. This research uses the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis Version 5 (ERA5) output to identify spatiotemporal features of daily mean surface air temperature, defined both as the mean of the maximum and minimum temperatures over the calendar day ("meanmaxmin") and as the mean of the 24 hourly observations per day ("meanhourly"), across the terrestrial Earth. Results suggest temporal warming throughout the year, with several "hot spots" of significantly increasing temperature, including in the Arctic transition seasons, Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes in July, Eurasia in spring, Europe and the lower latitudes in summer, and tropical autumn. Cooling is also observed, but generally at rates more likely to be statistically insignificant than warming rates. These trends are nearly identical regardless of whether calculated as "meanmaxmin" or "meanhourly." These results may assist scientists and citizens to understand more fully observed agricultural, commercial, ecological, economic, and recreational trends in light of climate change considerations.

Abstract:Europe and the Mediterranean are considered climate change hot spots. This is the reason why this paper focuses on the analysis of the trends of essential climate variables in a Mediterranean country, Greece. The analyzed period is 1991–2020, and the dataset used is ERA5-Land (produced by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), which has global coverage and an improved resolution of ~9 × 9 km compared to other datasets. Significant climatic changes across Greece have been put in evidence during the analyzed period. More specifically, the country averaged a 30-year trend of temperature of +1.5 °C, locally exceeding +2 °C, and this increasing trend is positively correlated with the distance of the areas from the coasts. Accordingly, the number of frost days has decreased throughout the country. In terms of rainfall, a major part of Greece has experienced increasing annual rainfall amounts, while 86% of the Greek area has experienced a positive trend of days with heavy rainfall (>20 mm). Finally, a multiple signal of the trend of consecutive dry days was found (statistically non-significant in the major part of Greece).

In the present research, the Climate Prediction Center daily minimum and maximum temperature are used to characterize high temperatures into intensity of hot days (TXx), hot nights (TNx), and frequency indices based on the 90th percentile of hot days (TX90p) and hot nights (TN90p) as defined by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices from 1981 to 2020 over Africa. The regression approach based on iterative reweighted least squares and correlation analyses are used to estimate the trends in extreme high‐temperature events and their relationship with various meteorological variables. Furthermore, the Pruned exact linear time algorithm is used to assess if the maximum temperature experienced an abrupt change. Results show that many parts of Africa experienced more frequent and intensified hot days and nights in the current period (1998–2020) compared to the recent past (1981–1997), suggesting a clear shift in climate. Thus, we used the climatological mean differences between meteorological parameters before and after the breakpoint to assess the relationship between atmospheric conditions and extreme high‐temperature events. As a result, we found that the current period observed an increase in the geopotential height at 500 hPa and reduced total cloud cover, as well as an increase in upward longwave radiation resulting in an upsurge in the frequency of hot days over many African sub‐regions. The present study's findings provide useful information for future planning and development of early warning systems to cope with risks associated with hot extremes.

Intensification in the Wettest Days to 50 Percent of Annual Precipitation (WD50) Across Europe

Abstract:Due to global warming, precipitation extremes are becoming more frequent and more severe, further exacerbating the uneven distribution of daily precipitation. In this study, we explored how many days in a year it takes to get to a certain amount of the precipitation that falls annually. We analyzed daily precipitation from gridded observations across the European continent and found that it generally took 22 to 34 of the wettest days to contribute to 50% of yearly totals (WD50). We found various degrees of alignment between gridded observations and ground measurements. Building on this, we examined changes in WD50 and detected widespread shifts toward fewer days in WD50 between the periods of 1950–1985 and 1986–2021. In addition, about one quarter of the European land also exhibited significant, decreasing trends in WD50 over the last 7 decades. Overall, this work showed an intensification of annual precipitation regimes.

Abstract:HIGH-FREQUENCY climate variability is a fundamental aspect of climate. Understanding climate change demands attention to changes in climate variability and extremes1, but knowledge of the recent behaviour of these variables has been limited by the unavailability of long-term high-resolution data. Climate simulations incorporating increased greenhouse-gas concentrations2-9 indicate that a warmer climate could result in a decrease in high-frequency temperature variability (analogous to the decrease in variability observed from the poles to the tropics, and from winter to summer10) and an increase in the proportion of precipitation occurring in extreme events. Here we analyse high-frequency temperature and precipitation data from hundreds of sites spread over Australia, China, the former Soviet Union and the United States over the past 30 to 80 years. Day-to-day temperature variability is seen to have decreased in the Northern Hemisphere, and-at least within the United States-the proportion of total precipitation contributed by extreme, one-day events has increased significantly. We find that although the notion of a recent increase in interannual temperature variability is supported by data from the past few decades11, the longer data records indicate that this trend is an aberration.

Abstract:Recent European heatwaves have raised interest in the impact of land cover conditions on temperature extremes. At present, it is believed that such extremes are enhanced by stronger surface heating of the atmosphere, when soil moisture content is below average. However, the impact of land cover on the exchange of water and energy and the interaction of this exchange with the soil water balance during heatwaves is largely unknown. Here we analyse observations from an extensive network of flux towers in Europe that reveal a difference between the temporal responses of forest and grassland ecosystems during heatwaves. We find that initially, surface heating is twice as high over forest than over grassland. Over grass, heating is suppressed by increased evaporation in response to increased solar radiation and temperature. Ultimately, however, this process accelerates soil moisture depletion and induces a critical shift in the regional climate system that leads to increased heating. We propose that this mechanism may explain the extreme temperatures in August 2003. We conclude that the conservative water use of forest contributes to increased temperatures in the short term, but mitigates the impact of the most extreme heat and/or long-lasting events.
Introducing a new hazard and exposure atlas for European winter storms

Abstract:Winter storms are one of the riskiest natural hazards in Europe. They are often assessed either from a climatology perspective or the exposed land use type. However, for accurate storm protection management, analyzing compatible wind speed and land use data at the highest spatiotemporally accuracy is critical. Thus, the study goals were (1) modeling wind speed for the 27 most extreme winter storm events from 1993 to 2022 at high spatial resolution (250 m × 250 m) and (2) defining and developing new and representative storm hazard and storm exposure indices for forested area, built-up area, and population. The winter storm event-related wind speed was modeled using a least-squares boosting approach based on ERA5 reanalysis data and 1730 wind speed measurement sites from the integrated surface global hourly meteorological dataset. In combination with temporally variable population density, built-up area, and forested area grids, the storm exposure indices for the European NUTS3 regions were calculated. The coefficient of determination of the median of the modeled wind speed fields is 0.73 for an independent subset of measurement sites. The wind speed maps reveal the uniqueness of the winter storm events. Each storm only affects parts of Europe. The study also emphasizes the relevance of distinguishing between storm hazard and storm exposure. The exposure of built-up areas to winter storms has increased considerably in recent years. This example underlines that storm exposure is not temporally constant but depends on the development of wind speed and land use. Decision-makers can apply the results of this study to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of storm protection measures. The developed storm exposures indices enable a sector- and location-specific evaluation with high precision.
