The traditional interpretation methods of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) use 1D inversion based on homogeneous half space and usually ignore the influence of the inhomogeneous conductivity background to the interpretation results. In this paper, we build three dimensional meshes in front of the tunnel face and apply 3D NMR forward modeling. Finite element method is used to calculate the perpendicular component of excitation magnetic field for the complex dielectric. By introducing pseudo- δ function and the divergence penalty term, the excitation current source is introduced and the weak solutions in 3D FEM problem is avoided. 3D inversion with initial amplitude is brought up and the illness of the sensitivity matrix and the noise in the measured data are considered. We use a non-linear objective function containing penalty term which is optimized with linearization technique. We simulate the NMR initial amplitude of a water-bearing cave in front of the tunnel face and use 3D inversion method to assess the location of the anomalous target and its water content. The inversion results show that NMR is effective and accurate in water-bearing cave detection in front of the tunnel face.
