Abstract:We demonstrate influences of the power splitting ratio of the quadrature-arm to the input signal on both receiver sensitivity and residual phase error for a 10-Gb/s binary phase-shift keying coherent receiver based on an optical homodyne Costas loop. Fine adjustment of the signal power splitting ratio (Ks) is realized by tuning the polarization state of the input signal light of a dual-polarization optical 90-deg hybrid, leading to the precise control of the power distribution on two orthogonal states of polarization that are used for in-phase and quadrature arm, respectively. When the phase error is negligible (<10 deg) under different Ks, the sensitivity is improved by 2.65 dB and the Ks is optimized around 0.05. Based on loop bandwidth maintaining, the requirement on laser linewidth is also relaxed, i.e., 5.26 times larger linewidth is permitted at Ks = 0.05 than that without loop bandwidth maintaining. To fully utilize the signal light power and to avoid excess losses of the dual-polarization hybrid, homodyne Costas coherent receiver with a free-space optics-based 90-deg hybrid is also proposed. All experimental and theoretical results demonstrate the potential of approaching shot noise limited sensitivity for a Costas coherent receiver with an optimum Ks. It is significant to increase power budget and transmission span for satellite optical communication and free-space optical communication. Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:Coherent detection with polarization multiplexing is widely used because of its high spectral efficiency. However, it utilizes analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital signal processing (DSP), which consume a large amount of power and thereby hinder its application in power-sensitive short-reach links. In this article, we present a 200-Gb/s analog $C$ -band dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent optical receiver (RX), which uses four-way time-interleaved sampling to relax the internal bandwidth limit. The RX utilizes a chromatic dispersion (CD) equalizer, a polarization demultiplexer (Pol. DEMUX), and carrier recovery (CR) to eliminate the intersymbol interferences induced by fiber impairments and the carrier frequency offset. A subsampling scheme is adopted for low-power adaptation. The decrease in the frequency offset detection range caused by subsampling is prevented using a consecutive slice sampling technique. Measurement results show that our RX supports equalization for impairments equivalent to a 10-km fiber and CR for a residual carrier frequency offset of 12 MHz. A bit error rate (BER) of less than $1e-10$ is achieved with an energy efficiency of 4.6 pJ/b.

Abstract:A high sensitivity receiver using delay demodulation techniques for multigigabit-per-second continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) transmission systems was investigated experimentally and theoretically. A receiver sensitivity of 67 photons/b or -46.7 dBm at a 10/sup -9/ BER was experimentally achieved at 2.488 Gb/s using 1.55- mu m distributed feedback laser diodes (LDs) for the transmitter and local oscillator. This receiver enables transmission over 308 km through 1.3- mu m zero-dispersion single-mode fiber. Experimental results are closely matched by computer simulation results which take into account the effects of eye degradation and noise filtering. These effects are mainly caused by the bandwidth limitations of the intermediate frequency bandpass filter and baseband low-pass filter. The simulation also takes into account the effects of nonflat LD frequency response, intrinsic finite frequency response of the delay demodulator, optical fiber chromatic dispersion, and laser phase noise.<>

Abstract:Optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) format has constant envelope and continuous temporal phase shift, and exhibits a promising application for its high compact spectrum. Coherent detections have been proved to be effectively for the significant improvement of receiver sensitivity. In this paper, a heterodyne detection scheme to demodulate 40Gb/s MSK signal is proposed, and simulation analysis is given to the receiver sensitivity, the laser line-width and frequency offset. Comparison is drawn between the presented heterodyne detection and homodyne detection, and investigation is made on the performance of the receiver in different schemes.

Abstract:As the capacity of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) is reaching 100 Gb/s and beyond, cost-effective transceivers have been widely discussed. In this work, we provide a comprehensive comparison of various simplified coherent and direct detection (DD) schemes operating at a 100 G b / s / λ 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation signal through numerical simulation. According to the cost, the coherent receivers can be divided into three levels: intensity-only coherent receivers and phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers. The received power sensitivity at back-to-back, influence of laser frequency offset, local oscillator power, laser linewidth, analog-to-digital convertor resolution, fiber dispersion, and hardware complexity are investigated and analyzed for each transceiver structure. The results show the following: (1) Transmitter-side optical amplification is suggested for DD and intensity-only coherent receivers to meet the 29 dB power budget requirement, and these schemes have a large dispersion penalty. (2) Compared with 3 × 3 coupler and 2 × 4 hybrid-based coherent receivers, 2 × 2 coupler and balanced-photodiode-based heterodyne detection exhibit similar performance with a simpler structure. (3) Both phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers have superior power budget and dispersion tolerance, and their application in PON would depend on the cost.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simplified coherent receiver based on heterodyne detection with only two balanced photodetectors and two analog-to-digital converters. The polarization diversity hybrid can be simplified relative to the conventional one. The detected intermediate frequency signals are first downconverted to baseband with inphase and quadrature separation. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrated the eight-channel 50 Gb/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying WDM signal with heterodyne detection based on digital signal processing over 1040 km single-mode fiber 28 with erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification.

Abstract:Relative to homodyne coherent detection, heterodyne coherent detection has simple architecture because no 90° hybrid and only half number of photodiodes and analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) chips are required. We experimentally demonstrate that the architecture of heterodyne coherent receivers can be further simplified. When the frequency offset is one half of the channel frequency spacing, one local oscillator (LO) laser can be used for two neighboring wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channels, and therefore the number of LO lasers can be reduced into half compared to homodyne detection. We experimentally demonstrate simplified heterodyne coherent detection of 4 × 196.8-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) modulation after transmission over 1040-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 on a 50-GHz grid with bit-error ratio (BER) smaller than pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10(-3). To our best knowledge, 196.8 Gb/s is the highest bit rate per channel for heterodyne coherent WDM transmission system. An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) instead of wavelength selective switch (WSS) is used at the transmitter to spectrally shape and multiplex the WDM signal. We also experimentally demonstrate that heterodyne detection causes 3-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty at the BER of 3.8 × 10(-3) for a certain single channel compared to homodyne detection.

Abstract:A low-complexity and cost-efficient coherent detection-based 100 Gb/s or beyond passive optical network (PON) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, as this technology offers high receiver sensitivity, colorless frequency selectivity, and linear detection enabling channel impairment compensation in the digital domain. We experimentally demonstrate the first single-wavelength 200 Gb/s coherent PON over 20 km downstream transmission with polarization division multiplexed four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PDM-PAM-4) signals in the C-band. The intensity modulator replaces the costly in-phase/quadrature modulator, and hardware-efficient carrier recovery technologies are used for recovery of PAM-4 symbols. By using optimized Nyquist pulse shaping, the transceiver bandwidth can be reduced to within 50 GHz. A maximum power budget of 32.5 dB can be achieved for 200 Gb/s/λ PDM-PAM-4 at a bit error rate of 1 × 10 − 2 over 20 km fiber transmission. The possibility of a 200 Gb/s/λ PON is investigated using intensity modulation and coherent detection for the first time to our knowledge.

Abstract:The deployment of low earth orbits is seen as a promising way of enlarging data capacities as well as high data rates. Catering to these interests, optical communication presents possible ways of larger bandwidth than microwave communication. The current generation of mainstream communication systems are classified as coherent systems and incoherent systems, and in particular, coherent systems have received more attention owing to their high receiving sensitivity. This study investigates a digital coherent transceiver, based on binary phase-shift keying technology. As coherent demodulation will be affected by considering the Doppler shift effect in digital demodulation, Doppler shift of ± GHz can be compensated by adopting a two-stage frequency offset compensation. Moreover, by leveraging a fast filtering algorithm a considerable amount of resource consumption is saved in its engineering implementation, and its sensitivity can be significantly enhanced via a high-speed parallel error-correction codec based on low-density parity-check technology.

Carrier Recovery Technology of Optical Phase Locked Loop in Coherent Laser Communication System

Abstract:By modeling and analyzing on the carrier recovery based on COSTAS optical phase locked loop, we obtain the closed-loop transfer function, error function and carrier signal that to be recovered of the system. Then we design composite control to realize the fast and small range tracking by using the acousto optic frequency shifter in the inner ring, and quickly pull into capture tape by control laser in the outer ring. In order to get the good carrier recovery and signal demodulation, we design the phase detection module based on exclusive-OR gate (XOR) to analyze the phase detector. The phase detection ranges from -42 degrees to +12 degrees, and phase detector gain achieves 11.9 mV/(degrees) when the loop bandwidth is 1.5 MHz. The experimental results show and that the carrier recovery and signal demodulation is good when the code rate is 5 Gb/s, and the error rate is 1.55 X 10(-8) when the signal power reaches 10.9 dBm. With the rate increasing or decreasing, the system performance decreases, but the system can recover the carrier signal and demodulate the data. This system can provide references for homodyne coherent communication laboratory verification.

Abstract:The necessity for high carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) in the single-sideband direct-detection transmission system results in a low receiver sensitivity. To address this problem, we propose a coherent reception scheme based on an electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) to amplify the optical carrier at the receiver in virtue of optical injection locking (OIL) technique, thereby mitigating the impact of the signal-signal beat interference. Specifically, the local oscillator yielded by an injection-locked distributed feedback (DFB) laser is coupled with the optical signal, and coherently detected by an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). We experimentally investigate the feasibility and performance of the 8-Gbaud Nyquist-shaped quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal transmission system employing an EML-based coherent receiver without the Kramers-Kronig (KK) algorithm. As a result, 9- and 7-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in comparison with the standard KK receiver while the CSPR is reduced by 10 dB in the optical back-to-back and after 80-km fiber transmission cases, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach owns the potential to improve receiver sensitivity for power and cost-efficient data center interconnection.

Abstract:For increasing the data rate and reducing the power consumption in satellite communication systems, free-space optical communication technology has been verified as an attractive alternative to traditional radiofrequency communication systems. In this study, a high-sensitivity homodyne coherent optical receiver was demonstrated. A sensitivity of -59.2 dBm was achieved with an unencoded bit-error rate below 10-3 at a bit rate of 1 Gbps (9.4 photons/bit does not include any overhead for forward error correction). To achieve homodyne detection, a modified decision-driven Costas optical phase-locked loop and a digital control algorithm were used to suppress the phase error and track the Doppler shift. Test experiments show that the receiver sensitivity penalty caused by the phase error is approximately 1 dB and that the receiver can track a Doppler shift at the speed of 100 MHz/s. Test experiments demonstrate that the receiver has a robust adaptive capacity to received-power fluctuation. The theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we real-time transmitted 32 × 100-Gb/s PM-QPSK modulated signal over 2,080-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) using coherent detection based on 100G transponder with 31.78 Gbaud/s. 32 WDM channel sources are generated by a single laser source on a 32 GHz grid and yield a spectral efficiency of 3.11 b/s/Hz.

Abstract:Coherent optical reception promises performance gains for a wide range of telecom applications and photonic sensing. However, the practical implementation and the particular realization of homodyne detection is by no means straight-forward. Local oscillator requirements and polarization management need to be cost-effectively supported for accurate signal detection at high sensitivity, preferably without relying on digital processing resources. Towards this direction we propose a conceptually simple, laser-based homodyne receiver. We exploit the injection locking of a pair of externally modulated lasers that simultaneously serve as optically synchronized local oscillators and photodetectors in a polarization-diversity analogue coherent receiver arrangement. We demonstrate signal detection at 2.5 Gb/s over an optical budget of 35 dB and a dynamic range of >20 dB. Long-term measurements over field-installed fiber confirm the correct operation independent of the polarization state of light. Stability considerations for the injection locking process are drawn in view of even higher loss budgets.

Abstract:There has been renewed interest in coherent detection to provide high spectral efficiency transmission for short-reach optical interconnects. However, the expensive high-stable laser sources may preclude its potential application. To balance the high performance and low cost for short-reach optical networks, the self-coherent homodyne receiver has been investigated, where the dual-polarization (DP) signal and the remote local oscillator (LO) originating from the same laser source co-propagate over a duplex fiber, enabling a remarkable tolerance of laser linewidth. However, the fast evolution of the state of polarization (SOP) of remotely delivered LO becomes problematic for self-coherent homodyne detection systems. To combat the polarization wandering of the remote LO, the complicated adaptive/automatic polarization controller (APC) has been deployed with only up to a few hundred rad/s polarization tracking speed. In this paper, we propose a complementary polarization-diversity coherent receiver (C-PDCR) for self-coherent homodyne detection using remote LO. The proposed C-PDCR features rapid polarization tracking for remote LO utilizing electronic digital signal processing (DSP). The robustness of the proposed C-PDCR is verified and demonstrated with a 1.08-Tb/s line rate (net rate 769.4 Gb/s over 45-GHz electrical bandwidth) using DP PCS-256QAM signal under rapid polarization rotation rate up to 314 krad/s in the experiment, which is more than 3-orders improvement of magnitude compared to the prior reports.

Abstract:A homodyne coherent laser communication system has the characteristics of high speed and long-distance transmission,and it plays an important role in the establishment of inter-satellite high-speed laser communication network.The operating principle of optical phase-locked loop is analyzed,and the corresponding mathematical model is established.The open-loop and closed-loop transfer functions of optical phase-locked loop are obtained.The error transfer function is derived.The influencing factors on loop bandwidth are analyzed.The phase noise error of phaselocked loop is analyzed,and the relationship among error factor,detection sensitivity and loop bandwidth is established.The optimized bandwidth of phase-locked loop is 1.5 MHz,and the bit error rate of the receiver is tested.The receiving sensitivity of-41.4 dBm and the bit error rate of 10-7 are obtained when the communication rate is 5 Gbit/s and the modulation mode is binary phase shift keying.
