Abstract:Energy is the essential resource for modern society, but recent growing concern over limited fossil-fuel resources, pollution, and global warming by greenhouse gas emissions has introduced the need to use renewable energy at a large scale, together with the widespread use of HEVs and EVs. This worldwide imperative comes with great challenges to our modern technology. One such issue is that some forms of green energy, like solar and wind power, generate power only intermittently with changing weather. Among the numerous energy storage/conversion solutions proposed over the last two centuries, mechanical devices, magnetic storage, chemical storage, electrochemical storage, and, more specifically, batteries seem to be very capable of satisfying these needs, but research to meet the application requirements is still a daunting task. Among batteries, Li-ion battery using highly stable structure is considered as possible energy storage in large scale. Therefore, polyanion type cathode materials such as phosphate and silicate are currently wifely studied and being commercialized. Synthesis, electrochemical evaluation and thermal stability of LiMPO4 and Li2MSiO4 (M: Fe and/or Mn) cathode will be presented.
