Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Because of the two functional groups in their polymer chain ends, telechelic polymers are usually used for the preparation of copolymers with special structures, such as block, graft, star-like, hyperbranched copolymers. Telechelic polymers are mainly prepared by traditional radical polymerization, controlled/"living" radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, cationic polymerization, metathesis polymerization, and condensation polymerization, etc. In comparison with traditional polymerization methods, olefin metathesis polymerization can be conducted in milder conditions and the molecular weight and structure of products are more controllable. In this review, the preparation of telechelic polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization in the presence of chain transfer agents are introduced. And the preparation of block copolymers via the combination with other living polymerization methods (such as NMRP, ATRP, RAFT, ROP, etc.) will be also included.

One-pot Synthesis of Octablock Copolymers of High-Molecular Weight Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) could offer new opportunities to design new nanomaterials with multifunctions or enhanced properties in a cost-effective way. However, it is still very challenging to obtain high degree of polymerization in each block of mBCPs with large block number using one-pot synthesis via controlled radical polymerizations. This is due to the accumulation of the dead chains throughout the many step polymerization. In this work, we developed a new highly efficient strategy for preparing mBCPs with large block number using one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization, where every polymer block was formed by sequential addition of monomers. We achieved high block degree of polymerizations (similar to 100 per block) for a model system of "octablock" polystyrene (PS) in just 2 hr per block. Experimentally measured molecular weights are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The dead chains generated through the polymerization are negligible due to the low initiator concentration. Yet the polymerization rates are still very fast due to the heterogeneous advantages of emulsion polymerization. We have also applied this strategy to a series of mBCPs from diblock (PS176-PnBA(286))(1) to octablock (PS176-PnBA(286))(4) (PnBA for poly(n-butyl acrylate)). The high degree of polymerization in our mBCPs ensures microphase separation even though PS/PnBA system is known for small chi values. We have also found that the tensile properties of our mBCPs increase significantly with increased number of blocks. Our work reveals that the number of blocks is an important molecular variable for tuning the mechanical properties of block copolymers.

Abstract:Two or more distinctive polymer chains are connected in one macromolecular chain to form block copolymers. Their excellent properties attract intense commercial and academic interests. This article introduces briefly the structures and properties of block copolymers. In the several different approaches of synthesizing block copolymers, we primarily summarize the recent progress in the research and development on the preparation of block copolymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation transfer ( RAFT). The effects of sequence of the monomer addition, the end group of macroiniliator,monomer reactivity, the initiation efficiency of the macroinitiator.ligand and transfer constant of macro-transfer agent on block copolymerization are also discussed.

Two different monobromo polymers (P1‐Br and P2‐Br) were reacted with Cu(0)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine in the presence of ethyl dithiobenzoate or 1,1‐diphenylethylene (X) and the block copolymer (P1‐X‐P2) can be obtained with high efficiency, which cannot be prepared by normal atom transfer radical coupling of mixture of P1‐Br and P2‐Br. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Three techniques of controlled radical polymerization, namely nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMRP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in combination with ring opening polymerization (ROP) were employed to prepare functional block-copolymers with controllable molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. The structure, molecular weight, and PDI of block-copolymers were characterized by various techniques. The synthesis routes of NMRP-ROP, ROP-ATRP, and ROPRAFT exhibited excellent controllable features in the preparation of functional block-copolymers.

Abstract:We demonstrate the single-step one-pot synthesis of block copolymers by simultaneous enzymatic ring-opening polymerization and chemically catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization in supercritical carbon dioxide. Both catalyst systems function simultaneously under these conditions, providing a simple route to the formation of block copolymers of dissimilar monomers.

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers such as SBS and polyurethanes are important synthetic materials used as thermoplastic elastomers in industry. They are usually prepared either by “coupling” 1 or by sequence monomer addition 2 using living polymerization. Controlled/living radical polymerizations (CRP), including stable free radical polymerization (SFRP), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, have been extensively studied in the past ten years. These CRPs have great advantages in preparing well-defined polymers than the other living polymerization techniques. Novel molecular architectures such as gradient, graft, star and dendrimer like copolymers have been prepared by using the CRP techniques. However, few (AB) n multiblock copolymers have been synthesized using CRP techniques 4, 5 due to the difference of monomer reactivity. Here we reported the synthesis of (AB)n multiblock copolymers based on maleic anhydride (MAn) and styrene (St) by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymerization was carried out with a RAFT agent, cumyl dithiophenylacetate (CDPA), and a radical initiator AIBN at 60C as shown in the following scheme.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:The foremost limitation of block copolymer synthesis is to polymerize two or more different types of monomers with different reactivity profiles using a single polymerization technique. Controlled living polymerization techniques play a vital role in the preparation of wide range of block copolymers, thus are revolutionary techniques for polymer industry. Polymers with good control over molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chain-end functionality and architectures can be prepared by these processes. In order to improve the existing applications and create new opportunities to design a new block copolymer system with improved physical and chemical properties, the combination of two different polymerization techniques have tremendous scope. Such kinds of macromolecules may be attended by combination of homopolymerization of different monomers by post-modification techniques using a macroinitiator or by using a dual initiator which allows the combination of two mechanistically distinct techniques. This review focuses on recent advances in synthesis of block copolymers by combination of living cationic polymerization with other polymerization techniques and click chemistry.

Abstract:A novel series of well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers containing conjugated poly(fluorene) (PF) block and coillike poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl metbacrylate) (PDMAEMA) were successfully synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initialized by a 2-bromoisobutyrate end-capped PF macroinitiator using CuCl/HMTETA (1,1,4,7,10,10-hexamethyltriethylenetetramine) as the catalyst. The first-order kinetics plot indicated a constant number of active species present in the polymerization. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution were well controlled, implying well-defined block structure of the prepared block copolymers. The chemical structures of the copolymers were confirmed by H-1 NMR studies. The copolymers could be successfully quanternized, and the final conjugated-ionic block copolymers were found to form PF aggregates in water as confirmed by 1H NMR, UV-vis, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. PL spectra and quantum efficiency measurement also suggested the formation of excimers within the PF aggregates.

Abstract:Block copolymers are widely used in many applications due to their spontaneous self-assembly into a variety of nanoscale morphologies. However, a grand challenge in navigating this diverse and ever-growing array of possible structures is the accelerated discovery, design, and implementation of materials. Here, we report a versatile and efficient strategy to accelerate materials discovery by rapidly building expansive, high-quality, and detailed block copolymer libraries through a combination of controlled polymerization and chromatographic separation. To illustrate the potential of this approach, a family of 16 parent diblock copolymers was synthesized and separated, leading to over 300 distinct and well-defined samples at the multigram scale. The resulting materials span a wide range of compositions with exceptional resolution in volume fraction and domain spacing that allows for the impact of monomer design on polymer self-assembly to be elucidated. Phase behavior that can be gleaned from these libraries includes the precise location of order-order boundaries and the identification of morphologies with extremely narrow windows of stability.
