Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with MUF resin modified by nano-Al2O3 as wall material and epoxy resin as the core material. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied to the epoxy resin matrix to prepare self-repair coating. The thermal property, mechanical properties, self-healing property and the electrochemical property of the coating were investigated. The results show that, when the core/wall ratio is 1.5 : 1 and the content of nano-Al2O3 is 4.5%, nano-Al2O3 is evenly distributed in the wall. The surface roughness and the thermal stability of microcapsules increase. When the microcapsules content is 5%, the thermal stability of the coating increases. The tensile strength, the bending strength, the impact strength and the bonding strength of the coating increase by 111.9%, 55.1%, 10.6% and 51.9%, respectively. The coating possesses good self-healing performance. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increase of the microcapsule content.
Chemically and thermally stable isocyanate microcapsules having good self-healing and self-lubricating performances

Abstract:A new approach was developed to load 4,4′-bis-methylene cyclohexane diisocyanate in microcapsules, with outstanding stability in thermal and chemical environments, and excellent efficiency for both self-healing and self-lubricating uses. Well-dispersed microcapsules with diameter of 80 ± 22 µm and shell thickness of 3.8 ± 0.2 µm were produced with a core fraction of 74 ± 1.3 wt% as determined by titration. In thermal environments, the microcapsules started to lose 5% mass at 230 °C, which was higher than the boiling point of pure HMDI and thermal decomposition temperature of shell material. In chemical environments (hexane, xylene, ethyl acetate and water), the impermeable microcapsules reserved more than 90% of original core material after 20 days immersion. More interestingly, final microcapsules survived successfully in acetone losing only 25% of core material after 24 h. Parameters including microcapsules size, concentrations, immersion durations and solvent polarity were investigated systematically to obtain the stability of microcapsules in organic solvents. The smart coatings (10 wt% microcapsules) showed outstanding self-healing anticorrosion efficiency in sodium chloride solutions, and their friction coefficient decreased by 80% than control samples.
Preparation and Properties of Self-healing Coatings Containing Epoxy Resin Microcapsules

Abstract:The work aims to prepare binary self-healing coating containing epoxy resin microcapsules and study mechanical properties self-healing property of the coating. The binary self-healing epoxy coating was prepared by adding self-made epoxy resin E-51/urea-melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules and latent curing agent (2-methylimidazole) to epoxy resin matrix in certain proportion. Bending property, impact resistance and tensile strength of the coating were tested with paint film elasticity testing machine, paint film impact testing machine and universal tensile testing machine. Self-healing property of the coating was investigated with OM and SEM. Electrochemical property was tested with EIS. The binary self-healing coating containing epoxy resin microcapsules was successfully prepared. When the microcapsules content in the coating reached 3%, the impact strength and tensile strength of the coating increased by 10.6% and 14.6%, respectively. When the 2-methylimidazole and mi-crocapsules content was 6% and 5%, respectively, the self-healing property of the coating was excellent. When the microcap-sules content in the coating was 9%, electrochemical impedance value of the coating was up to 1.2×105ohms. The addition of microcapsules can effectively improve the impact strength and tensile strength of the coating. As the content of latent curing agent increases in the coating, the self-healing property of the coating gradually improves. When the content of latent curing agent reaches a certain value, the self-healing property of the coating improves as the microcapsules content increases in the coating. The electrochemical impedance value of the coating increases with the increase of microcapsules content.
Robust and impermeable metal shell microcapsules for one-component self-healing coatings

Abstract:Metal shell microcapsules containing liquid 4,4′-bis-methylene cyclohexane diisocyanate (HMDI) were successfully synthesized by plating chemically a layer of Ni-P alloy on microcapsules surfaces. The metal shell occupied around 66.0 wt% of final microcapsules, providing great potential to improve microcapsules robustness. Final microcapsules with diameters of 184.3 ± 41.7 µm had a core fraction of 22.4 ± 0.6 wt%. The final microcapsule shells with a total thickness of 7.4 ± 0.4 µm was a three-layered structure, which comprised of an outer-layered Ni-P shell with a thickness of 5.5 ± 0.2 µm, a medium-layered PUF shell with a thickness of 369.0 ± 21.0 nm, and an inner-layered polyurea shell with a thickness of 1.7 ± 0.2 µm. More interestingly, final microcapsules remained stable core fraction and morphologies in most regular solvents including low polar organic solvents, high polar organic solvents, and water. The shell strength of final microcapsules was 28.5 ± 10.3 MPa, comparing with 6.6 ± 2.5 MPa of polymer shells. Moreover, the modulus of epoxy composites was stable relatively with microcapsules concentrations. Scratched self-healing epoxy coatings showed satisfactory anticorrosion performance in salty water (1 M).

Abstract:Dual component microencapsulated hydrophobic amine and microencapsulated isocyanate were designed and fabricated for self-healing anti-corrosion coating. In this system, novel hydrophobic polyaspartic acid ester (PAE) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were microencapsulated respectively with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) as shell via in situ polymerization. To reduce the reaction activity between shell-forming MF prepolymer and PAE, another self-healing agent tung oil (TO) was dissolved in PAE and subsequently employed as core material. With field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and optical microscopy (OM), the resultant microencapsulated IPDI with diameter of 2⁻5 μm showed a spherical shape and smooth surface. More importantly, both the morphology and microstructure of microencapsulated PAE enhanced significantly after addition of TO. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) analysis confirmed the molecular structure of chemical structure of the microcapsules. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that both kinds of microcapsules exhibit excellent thermal resistance with the protection of MF shell. Furthermore, the self-healing epoxy coating system containing microencapsulated IPDI and microencapsulated PAE/TO was prepared and investigated. From the micrographs of true color confocal microscope (TCCM), the self-healing coating containing dual-component microcapsules showed excellent self-repairing performance compared to single microencapsulated IPDI system, and the optimal content of dual-component microcapsules in epoxy coating was 20 wt % approximately.

Abstract:Single-layer isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) are one of the most popular self-healing microcapsules but suffers from low shell strength, poor heat resistance, stability and aging properties. In this paper, IPDI microcapsules were encapsulated into double-layer phenolic (PF)/polyurethane (PU) by a two-step process involving interfacial polymerization and in-situ polymerization. The prepared microcapsule composites were comprehensively characterized for their physical and chemical properties using optical microanalysis, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and depth-sensing indentation analysis. Compared with the single-layer PU-IPDI microcapsule counterpart, the mechanical performance, thermal resistance, aging property and environmental stability of double-layer PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules were significantly improved. The epoxy coating was enhanced with the incorporation of 10 wt.% PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules, whose self-healing performance was evaluated by scratch corrosion test. The results demonstrated successful repair of coating scratches, along with the absence of corrosion on the coated steel substrate soaked in a 10 wt.% NaCl solution for 7 days. By comparing the tensile strength of epoxy coating before and after crack formation, it could be found that the self-healing efficiency was 57.9% when loaded with 10 wt.% of PF/PU-IPDI microcapsules in coating. This study highlights that the rational design of double-layer microcapsules integrated into the epoxy coating matrix could provide excellent anti-corrosion and self-healing properties.

Abstract:Waterborne polymer-cement coatings have been widely applied in building materials due to their organic solvent-free nature, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, these coatings can easily crack during the drying process as a result of construction environment factors, compromising the barrier performance of the coating and limiting its large-scale application. In this study, a dual-shell self-healing microcapsule was developed, which can effectively heal damage on a macro scale in waterborne polymer-cement coatings. Specifically, this dual-shell self-healing microcapsule was designed with a silica gel shell and a tannic acid-cuprum (TA-Cu) double-shell structure embedded with an epoxy resin (EP) healing agent, which was successfully fabricated via a two-step in situ polymerization. This silica gel shell self-healing microcapsules can effectively load into waterborne polymer-cement coatings. As the coating dries and solidifies, the silica gel shell of the microcapsule also becomes loose and brittle due to dehydration. This improves the mechanical initiation efficiency of the microcapsules in the coating. This study provides a novel approach for the application of self-healing microcapsules in waterborne coating systems, which can significantly reduce cracking during the drying process of waterborne polymer-cement coatings and improve the service life of the coating under complex conditions.

Abstract:Microcapsules containing isophorone diisocyanate were fabricated in oil-in-water emulsion. The emulsification effect of different emulsifiers during the capsule synthesis was systematically investigated by optical microscope. Three kinds of shell materials were discussed to obtain the high core content, smooth-surfaced, and robust capsule by scanning electronic microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Self-healing performance of corresponding self-healing epoxy composites was fully evaluated by accelerated corrosion test and mechanical test. The results demonstrated that high core content and smooth-surfaced capsules with dense composite shell could be synthesized in polyvinyl alcohol emulsion, and the core content of the optimized capsules was determined as 71.3–84.6 wt% at the capsule size from 35 μm to 154 μm. In addition, the optimized capsules had good processing properties and the corresponding self-healing epoxy composites exhibited excellent core release and self-healing performance.

Abstract:Epoxy resins serve as useful material in anti-corrosion coatings. However, the development of microcracks during the processing or service life of a coating is an inevitable occurrence that markedly degrades its performance and shortens its lifespan. The incorporation of self-healing materials can prolong the coatings' lifespan and enhance the reliability of corrosion prevention processes. In this study, a microencapsulation method via integrating electrospraying and interfacial polymerization (ES-IP) was adopted to synthesize the microcapsules containing 4,4'-bis-methylene cyclohexane diisocyanate (HMDI) successfully. The self-healing capability of these microcapsules within the anti-corrosion coating was successfully validated. The prepared HMDI microcapsules (HMDI-MCs) demonstrate excellent dispersibility, tunable characteristics, and a high core material content of 93 wt%. Self-healing anti-corrosion coatings containing HMDI-MCs were prepared and underwent accelerated corrosion testing in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The result showed that HMDI is capable of leaking from microcapsules and undergoing solidification, thus forming a barrier to metal steel from corrosion hazards by endowing the coatings with effective self-healing abilities. This paper expands the application of the ES-IP technique in microencapsulation and suggests that HMDI-MCs have significant potential in self-healing anti-corrosion coating.

Abstract:Silica‐polyurea/polyuretane hybrid shell microcapsules (MCs) loaded with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with long shelf‐life and high thermal and chemical stability are prepared via emulsification followed by interfacial polymerization at the surface of oil droplets of the oil‐in‐water emulsion. The resultant MCs are aimed at self‐healing performance in epoxy coatings. A commercially available, highly reactive polyisocyanate named tris(p‐isocyanatophenyl) thiophosphate is successfully employed as shell forming agent, while triethoxyoctylsilane and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDMS) are tested as "latent" active hydrogen sources. The resulting MCs display core–shell morphology, spherical shape with diameter of 5–20 μm, shell thickness ca. 1–2 μm, and an IPDI core fraction of 69 and 65 wt %, when HDMS and triethoxyoctylsilane are employed, respectively. MCs exhibit an increased thermal stability, comparing with pure IPDI, which makes them robust enough to resist the thermal cycles involved in the coating's preparation. Stability of MCs inside specific solvents and chemicals, their chemical composition and shelf‐life as well as effect of MCs on the epoxy curing are evaluated by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. MCs, remarkably, show excellent environment stability and a long shelf‐life of more than 3.5 months. Their addition to an epoxy formulation is found to heal damaged zones in the epoxy coating, as shown by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:In this study, we successfully manufactured polyurethane microcapsules containing isocyanate prepolymer as a core material for self-healing protection coatings via interfacial polymerization of a commercial polyurethane curing agent (Bayer L-75) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a chain extender in an emulsion solution. With an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the resulting microcapsules showed a spherical shape and an ideal structure with a smooth surface. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) showed that the core material was successfully encapsulated. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the initial evaporation temperature of the microcapsules was 270 °C. In addition, we examined the influence of the concentration of the emulsifier and chain extender on the structure and morphology of the microcapsules. The results indicate that the optimal parameters of the microcapsule are an emulsifier concentration of 7.5% and a chain extender concentration of 15.38%. Microcapsules were added to the epoxy resin coating to verify the coating’s self-healing performance by a surface scratch test, and the results showed that the cracks could heal in 24 h. Furthermore, the self-healing coating had excellent corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Polyurea/poly(urea-formaldehyde)/Al2O3 hybrid microcapsules with a dense Al2O3 nano-layer containing 4,4'-methylenebis cyclohexyl isocyanate (HMDI) have been successfully fabricated via combaning Atomic layer deposition (ALD) process and interfacial/in-situ polymerization process. This dense Al2O3 nano-layer can be controllable deposited in the form of a single atom film through continuous self-limiting reactions of Al(CH3)3 and H2O on the surface of the PU/PUF microcapsules at a temperature range of 120∼180 oC. The formed hybrid microcapsules showed a monodispersed diameter of ∼60 µm with a controlled and nano-sized Al2O3 shell.Moreover, the deposited Al2O3 nano-shell significantly increased the thermal stability and mechanical property of hybrid microcapsules, which could maintain their integrity under harsh conditions. In addition, by embedding hybrid microcapsules into an epoxy matrix, an excellent anticorrosion performance in scratched coatings via self-healing functionality was obtained. Therefore, the formed hybrid microcapsules with enhanced thermal stability and mechanical property via ALD process could promote their practical application in self-healing composites.

Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized with the hybrid of Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and terminal isocyanate prepolymer (CPU) as active healing agent, then the microcapsules were mixed with epoxy resin in order to form a metal anti-corrosion coating with excellent self-healing properties. Through process optimization and molecular design, the core material which was isocyanate hybrid (CPU-IPDI) with 17% Isocyanate group (-NCO) was synthesized by the reaction of IPDI and castor oil, and then the CPU-IPDI was encapsulated in the microcapsule with Diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the shell by interface polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric spectroscopy (TGA) confirmed the successful encapsulation of CPU-IPDI. The effect of the content of sodium lignosulfonate (NaLS) on the size and morphology of microcapsules were investigated. Optical microscopy (OM) and laser particle size analyzer show that the size of microcapsules decreases with the increase of the content of stabilizing agent. The microcapsules were prepared with 1% NaLS with a core content of 51.3%, an average particle size of 26.3μm and a shell thickness of 1.44 ± 0.9μm. In addition, the microcapsules loaded with CPU-IPDI were added to the epoxy coating, and the healing process of blank coating and self-healing coating was detected by SEM. The results show that the coating wound of containing 10% microcapsules has obvious healing. With saline infiltration and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test coating corrosion process, the results prove that after soaking in 3.5% NaCl solution for 7 days, the |Z| f = 0.01Hz value of the coating with 10wt % microcapsules is about 1.9 × 10 6 Ω cm 2 , nearly three order higher than that of pure epoxy coating (3.1 × 10 3 Ω cm 2 ), demonstrating the enhancement of protection ability.

Abstract:Microcapsules loading with healing agents are constantly used in engineered self-healing materials. But the synthesis of epoxy resin composites with excellent self-healing effect remains a major challenge. In this paper, 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (KH570) was used to modify the nano silica (KHSI) for increasing lipophilicity. Then by using water-in-oil method, the inverse Pickering emulsion was stabilized by KHSI, and the core-shell double microcapsules (CS-DMics) loaded with different healing agents were formed via 1,1-Bis(acryloyloxymethyl)ethyl isocyanate (BEI). SEM and particle size statistical show that the size range of CS-DMics is 10–149.25 μm. Ultimately, the self-healing epoxy resin compound (Sh-ERC) was acquired by combining CS-DMics with epoxy resin substrate materials. The thermal properties, mechanical properties, self-healing properties and electrical conductivity were tested. It is found that Sh-ERC has perfect self-healing performance when the cracks occur and the microcapsules release healing agent for repairing. The self-healing effect of Sh-ERC is better with more CS-DMics content, and the self-healing efficiency is up to 86.5% when the content of CS-DMics is 40%. It has an excellent self-healing performance for engineering materials.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, self‐healing coating has been emerged and become one of the most crucial and critical materials with an excellent potential to repair physical damage and prevent cracks from expansion as an anticorrosion element to lengthen the coating lifespan. The determining factor in self‐healing coating is that the microcapsules containing a self‐curing liquid, which quickly fills up the cracks when the coatings are cut. Microcapsule embracing isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a strong self‐healing agent requiring no catalyst has been continuously innovated to be utilized in reality; however, its core content is still low (50‐70 %) and the effects on it were not systematically investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to synthesize polyurethane/polyurea microcapsules carrying a higher content of IPDI to be potentially applied in self‐healing epoxy coating. As a result, the newly developed spherical microcapsules were obtained with a core content of nearly 80 %, which is far higher than previous research. Moreover, the self‐healing ability of epoxy coating containing 10 wt.% of these microcapsules was apparently demonstrated as illustrated in SEM images, along with its excellent anticorrosion, preventing 92.5 % of cracks from corrosion after immersed in 3.5 % NaCl solution for 72 hours.

Research on the Corrosion Resistance of an Epoxy Resin-Based Self-Healing Propylene Glycol-Loaded Ethyl Cellulose Microcapsule Coating

Abstract:In this work, ethyl cellulose was used as a wall material, propanetriol as a core material, polyvinyl alcohol as a stabilizer and gelatin as an emulsifier. Self-healing microcapsules with a slow-release effect were prepared using the solvent evaporation method. Various analytical techniques, such as 3D confocal microscopy (LCSM), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermal weight loss analysis (TGA), laser particle size tester and electrochemical impedance polarization, are utilized. The morphology, distribution, particle size, corrosion resistance and self-healing ability of the prepared microcapsules and resin-based coatings were characterized and analyzed. The results show that the cross-sectional core–shell structure is clearly seen in the LCSM, showing a smooth, hollow, spherical shape. OM and laser particle size testers have shown that the size of the microcapsules decreases over time. Also, in OM, the microcapsules are uniformly distributed in the emulsion with a smooth and non-adherent surface. In SEM, the microcapsule particle size is about 150 μm, the shell wall thickness is about 18 μm, and the hollow structure of ruptured microcapsules is obvious. FT-IR and TGA confirmed the successful encapsulation of the formulated microcapsules. The results show that when the core-wall mass ratio is 1.2:1 and the amount of microcapsule is 10% of the coating amount, the prepared microcapsule has high thermal stability and certain wear resistance. By electrochemical and immersion experiments, it was found that a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution has the best impedance, the lowest corrosion current density, and good adhesion and tensile toughness. The results showed that glycerol was successfully released from the broken microcapsules and self-healed, forming an anticorrosive coating with excellent corrosion resistance and self-healing ability.

Abstract:Microcapsules, with polyether amine as the core repairing agent and polyether amine-cured epoxy as the shell, were prepared via the multiple emulsion polymerization and applied in an epoxy/polyether amine coating system on carbon steel surfaces. The microcapsules and the coating substrate have the same composition and are seamlessly connected by chemical bonds, akin to the direct injection of liquid healing agents into the substrate. When the repairing agent flows out, it will crosslink and cure with the epoxy groups in the substrate to achieve no difference self-repair. The characteristics of microcapsules were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Thermal gravimetric (TG). The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance recovery of coatings loaded of coatings with different weight percentages of loaded microcapsules were investigated using tensile testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and neutral salt spray test (NSS). Results indicate that the 7 wt% microcapsules composite coating shows a 37.7 % increase in tensile strength and a 71.4 % increase in fracture toughness over pure epoxy coating. After immersing in saltwater for 7 days, the scratch sealing efficiency can reach 99.85 %. The coating system not only improved the compatibility between microcapsules and the substrate, but also enhanced the toughness of thermosetting brittle epoxy materials, giving it long-lasting anti-corrosion capability.

Abstract:Photopolymerization behavior of a methacryloxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (MAT-PDMS) healing agent was investigated in the presence of benzoin isobutyl ether (BIE) photoinitiator by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. MAT-PDMS and BIE were microencapsulated with urea-formaldehyde polymer. The surface and shell morphology of the microcapsules was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mean diameter and size distribution of the microcapsules could be controlled by agitation rate. A coating matrix formulation was prepared by sol-gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of a polysiloxane and by subsequent addition of an adhesion promoter. The formulation and microcapsules were mixed to give a self-healing coating formulation, which was then sprayed to surface of cellulose-fiber-reinforced-cement (CRC) board or mortar. Contact angle measurements showed that both the polymerized MAT-PDMS and the prepared coating matrix are hydrophobic, and the coating matrix has good wettability with MAT-PDMS. It was confirmed by optical microscopy and SEM that, when the self-healing coating is damaged, the healing agent is released from ruptured microcapsules and fills the damaged region. The self-healing coating was evaluated as protective coating for mortar, and it was demonstrated by water permeability and chloride ion penetration tests that our system has sunlight-induced self-healing capability. Our self-healing coating is the first example of capsule-type photoinduced self-healing system, and offers the advantages of catalyst-free, environmentally friendly, inexpensive, practical healing.

Abstract:Traditional anticorrosion coatings often suffer from reduced effectiveness or even complete failure due to the formation of microcracks. Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) can form a polyurea structure without a catalyst in the presence of water, which can protect the underlying metal from corrosion. In this study, an anticorrosion coating with self-healing properties was developed by incorporating microcapsules containing IPDI into the coating formulation. Silica-based self-healing microcapsules were synthesized via interfacial polymerization, using tetraethyl orthosilicate as the precursor and IPDI as the core material. The effects of core-to-wall ratio, reaction temperature, different emulsifiers, and emulsifier ratios on the microcapsule properties were investigated. The results demonstrated that microcapsules prepared using a composite emulsifier system of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and OP-10 at a 1:1 ratio, with a core-to-wall ratio of 1:1, and a reaction temperature of 75°C, exhibited a smooth surface, spherical shape, and excellent encapsulation efficiency. The maximum core content achieved was 81.2 wt%. An epoxy coating embedded with these self-healing microcapsules was subjected to scratching damage. After applying water to the surface and allowing it to stand for 2 days, the scratches healed, and the steel plate surface remained free from corrosion, indicating excellent self-healing performance.
