Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical label encoding and updating for an orthogonally labeled signal in combined IM/FSK modulation format utilizing semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers and electro-absorption modulators. Complete functionality of a network node including two-hop transmission and all-optical label swapping is also experimentally demonstrated with overall penalty of less than 2 dB, proving the orthogonal IM/FSK labeling scheme to be a feasible solution for future optically labeled networks.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel orthogonal optical labeling scheme based on 40-Gbits optical frequency-shift keying (FSK) payload and 2.5-Gbit s intensity-modulated (IM) labeling. Using the technology of carrier-suppressed modulation and conversion of differential phase-shift keying to IM, only one light source is needed to generate the optical FSK signal. The system performance, including range of IM modulation depth, bit error ratio, and dispersion limitation, is carefully investigated by numerical simulation. With IM modulation depth of 0.4, the 40 Gbit s FSK payload and 2.5-Gb s IM label are transmitted over a 50-km standard single mode fiber (SMF) with 0.87 and 0.92 dB penalty and show immunity to input power range upto 11 and 15 dB, respectively. Optimal methods to improve the system performance are also proposed and discussed. After optimization, the IM modulation depth can be reduced to 0.2. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:A free-space optical (FSO) transmission system is experimentally demonstrated in the long-wave infrared (LWIR, 9.15 mu m) using a directly modulated quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) and a commercial mercury-cadmium-telluride infrared photovoltaic detector. At room temperature, the DMQCL is current-modulated by discrete multitone signals pre-processed with bit-/power-loading. Up to 5.1 Gbit/s data rate is achieved with bit error rate performance below the 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction limit of 4.5 x 10(-3), enabled by a frequency domain equalizer. The stability study of the FSO system is also performed at multiple temperature values. This study can provide a valuable reference for future terrestrial and space communications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new concept of optical packet/burst switching suitable for generalized multiprotocol label switched (GMPLS)-based optical networks. In such networks, optical labeled switched paths are being established in a similar way as label-switched paths in MPLS. We use a wavelength label as well as an orthogonally modulated label, with respect to the payload modulation format, and which is encoded using either frequency-shift keying (FSK) or differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Wavelength is used for switching in the node, whereas the orthogonal label defines the label-switched path. We present both simulation and experimental results to assess transmission performance of the proposed combined modulation scheme. In addition, we propose a suitable optical node architecture that can take advantage of this stacked label concept. Toward this, we use widely tunable wavelength converters to efficiently route IM/FSK (or IM/DPSK) optically labeled packets in an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG)-based node structure. We present performance simulation results in terms of packet loss ratio and internal block probability. Internal blocking is an inherent problem of AWG optical routers, and a specific wavelength assignment algorithm has been developed to minimize it. Finally, the feasibility of IM/FSK transmission is experimentally demonstrated over an 88-km single-mode fiber span, and novel aspects of FSK generation and detection techniques are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the generation, detection, and performance of frequency-shift keying (FSK) for high-speed optical transmission and label switching. A non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continuous-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI). An RZ-FSK signal is generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM, which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half the bit rate. Demodulation can be achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. We perform numerical simulation on two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM, and we determine the effect of frequency tone spacing (FTS) on the generated FSK signal. In the proposed scheme, a novel frequency modulation format has transmission advantages compared with traditional modulation formats such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), under varying dispersion management. The performance of an RZ-FSK signal in a 4 x 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is discussed. We experiment on transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal. The feasibility of all-optical signal processing of a high-speed RZ-FSK signal is confirmed. We also determine the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), under the post-compensation management scheme. Because the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying), it can be used in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate. It can also be used in orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label. As an example, we propose a simple orthogonal optical label switching technique based on 40 Gb/s FSK payload and 2.5 Gb/s intensity modulated (IM) label.

Abstract:A novel technique for optical labeling of payloads and labels using optical single-sideband modulation is proposed. This method can effectively reduce the bandwidth of optical signal and utilize the low frequency RF devices to generate the labels. And we also investigate the power and phase character of this scheme. Simulation results show that this scheme is robust to the phase differences of the single-sideband payload and label. After fiber transmission and label swapping, the power penalties of payload and label are both less than 1dB. Therefore this scheme is suitable for 40Gb/s optical label switching networks.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of high bit rate optical frequency shift-keying transmitter. Base on the periodic notch spectral properties of Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer and the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator, a high-speed optical FSK signal can be simply generated with another phase modulator and a single wavelength laser source. The transmission characteristics of this FSK signal are investigated under varying dispersion management. Simulated results show that 40Gb/s FSK signal gives only 1dB penalty after 80 km SMF transmission link under the post-compensation management scheme.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-speed free-space optical (FSO) transmission over 1 km using 20 Gbit/s advanced coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagram and the bit error rate (BER) are measured. The receiving sensitivity of the FSO transmission is about-23.9 dBm at the BER of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.
