Abstract:The paper presents the sorts, features and applications of semiconductor all-optical switches. According to their structures, the switches can be divided into planar-type and waveguide-type. According to their operation principles, they can be divided into phase-shift-type and frequency-shift-type. Abstract:We propose a time- and channel-selective optical data exchange between wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) channels by exploiting the cascaded second-order parametric nonlinear interactions in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide. It is observed that the PPLN-based optical data exchange provides nearly symmetric performance with signals located in the short-and long-wavelength ranges. Optical data exchange between two WDM channels is realized with a power penalty of less than 1.5 dB at 10 Gbit/s and 3 dB at 40 Gbit/s at a bit-error rate of 10(-9). We demonstrate the 40 Gbit/s channel-selective optical data exchange between four WDM channels with a power penalty of similar to 4 dB. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose an approach to implementing wavelength- and time-selective optical switching, dropping and swapping based on the sum-frequency generation (SFG) or cascaded sum-and difference-frequency generation (cSFG/DFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide. Analytical solutions are derived, showing the parametric depletion effect for optical switching and the narrow-band operation due to quasi-phase matching (QPM) condition of PPLN. Using parametric depletion effect of SFG process, we demonstrate wavelength- and time-selective optical switching for ITU-grid compatible 40-Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) signals with a channel spacing of 100 GHz. Less than 1-dB power penalty at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10(-9) is measured for the wavelength- and time-selective switching channel. Negligible impacts are observed on other channels of WDM signals. Using combined effects of parametric depletion and wavelength conversion of cSFG/DFG processes, we demonstrate wavelength- and time-selective optical dropping for ITU-grid compatible 100-GHz-spaced 40-Gbit/s WDM signals. Moreover, we demonstrate optical swapping between two 100-GHz-spaced 40-Gbit/s signals. The obtained theoretical and experimental results confirm single-PPLN-assisted wavelength- and time-selective optical switching, dropping and swapping for 100-GHz-spaced WDM signals, which might potentially be extended to WDM signals with narrower channel spacing. Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated ultra-fast phase-transparent wavelength conversion using cascaded sum- and difference-frequency generation (cSFG-DFG) in linear-chirped periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). Error-free wavelength conversion of a 160-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal was successfully achieved. Thanks to the enhanced conversion bandwidth in the PPLN with linear-chirped periods, no optical equalizer was required to compensate the spectrum distortion after conversion, unlike a previous demonstration of 160-Gb/s RZ on-off keying (OOK) using fixed-period PPLN.

Abstract:All-optical 1×4 broadcast and 1×3 multicast experiments of a 40-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) signal based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide are demonstrated in this letter. Clear opened eye diagrams and error-free performance are achieved for the broadcast signals at 1541.3, 1543.7, 1548.5, and 1550.9 nm. Multicast technology uses cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN waveguide. An error-free operation with a negligible power penalty is achieved for the three wavelength-division multiplexing multicast signals at 1533, 1537, and 1541 nm.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical switch based on plasmonic nanostructures has large application potentials in optical logic circuits and optical communication systems. Integration of plasmonic optical switching devices with optical fibers is a breakthrough for realizing practical applications in long-range optical data transmission or communication techniques. Here, the incorporation of plasmonic optical switch devices onto the end facets of optical fibers is reported, so that the switched optical signals are generated by interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and plasmonic nanostructures on one end of the fiber, and are delivered via the fiber waveguide to the other end for detection or decoding. "Quenching" of localized surface plasmon in the gold nanowires by its interaction with band-edge modulation in gold through strong optical excitation is the responsible photophysics. This work accomplishes for the first time the implementation of ultrafast plasmonic optical switch device on optical fiber tips for logic data transmission.

Abstract:We discus an all-optical flip-flop memory and a wavelength converter based on nonlinear polarization rotation in a semiconductor optical amplifier. The flip-flop is realized from two coupled polarization switches. The concept is explained and experimental results are presented that demonstrate that a contrast ratio of over 20 dB and a switching power of less than -3 dBm can be obtained. The all-optical wavelength converter employs a single polarization switch. We show that error-free inverted and non-inverted wavelength conversion can be realized at a data-rate of 10 Gbit/s. Both optical signal-processing functionalities can be utilized in all-optical packet switches.

Abstract:The optical parametric amplifier (OPA) has attractive features for optical communications, such as a wideband, high gain, and fast transient response. In addition, by using idler light, which is phase-conjugated light generated in the amplification process, various kinds of optical signal processing, such as fiber-nonlinearity mitigation, wavelength conversion, and phase-sensitive amplification, can be performed. A periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguide is an (2)-based optical parametric amplification medium, and it makes both wideband and high-gain amplification possible. We developed a 4-port PPLN module that can combine signal light and pump light into a PPLN waveguide with low loss. In this paper, we overview the applications of OPA to WDM optical fiber transmission and explain the configurations of an OPA using 4-port PPLN modules. As applications of our PPLN-based OPA, we introduce the demonstration of wideband inline amplification exceeding 5 THz. Furthermore, we demonstrate inter-band wavelength conversion between C- and S-bands using PPLN waveguides developed for multi-band optical transmission applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength routing of 80 Gb/s data packets without using electronic control. The system consists of an optical wavelength converter and a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two coupled lasers, exhibiting single-mode operation, having a 35 dB contrast ratio between the states, and switching its state in about 2 us. The wavelength converter is optically controlled by the optical flip-flop. We show that the optical set and reset pulses can force the optical flip-flop to switch its continuous-wave output light between two specific wavelength positions. The output light feeds the wavelength converter, which, in turn, converts the data packet into the flip-flop's output wavelength, causing the data packet to be routed into a specific port.

Abstract:Progress in developing photonic chip based optical processing devices with ultrahigh‐bandwidth is reviewed. The unprecedented processing bandwidth of our platform based on dispersion engineered chalcogenide waveguides is exploited to perform Tbaud optical switching and performance monitoring. Abstract:We discuss how all-optical signal processing might play a role in future all-optical packet switched networks. We introduce a concept of optical packet switches that employ entirely all-optical signal processing technology. The optical packet switch is made out of three functional blocks: the optical header processing block, the optical memory block and the wavelength conversion block. The operation principle of the optical packet switch is explained. We show that these three functional blocks can be realized by using the nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Some technologies in these three functional blocks are described. The header processor is realized using a Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer. We also describe a header pre-processor to improve the extinction ratio of the header processor output. In the optical memory block, we show that an all-optical memory can be obtained by using two coupled lasers that form a master-slave configuration. The state of the optical memory is distinguished by the wavelength of the master laser. We extend the concept to an optical memory can have multiple states. In the wavelength conversion block, we demonstrate a 160 Gbit/s wavelength conversion using a single semiconductor optical amplifier in combination with a well-designed optical bandpass filter. The semiconductor optical amplifier has a gain recovery time greater than 90 ps, which corresponds to a less than 20 GHz bandwidth for conventional wavelength conversion. We show that by properly using the optical bandpass filter, ultrafast dynamics in the semiconductor optical amplifier can be employed for wavelength conversion at ultrahigh bit-rates.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Optical Interconnection Networks (OIN). We present three optical signal processing functional blocks that enable 1×N optical packet switching. An ultrafast asynchronous multioutput all-optical header processor is demonstrated with a terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer in combination with a header preprocessor. It is shown that self-induced polarization rotation can be used for both the header processor and the header preprocessor. The second functional block is optical buffering. This is shown with both a laser neural network and a recirculating buffer. Related to this is a three-state all-optical memory based on coupled lasers, which increases the number of possible output states of an optical packet switch.

Abstract:A novel method to reconstruct the optical phase of fiber laser data pulses allows for generating phase-coded signal formats at record high speed (up to 320 Gb/s). This enables the first-time analysis of nonlinear transmission properties of different coherent modulation formats at 160-Gb/s.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics-based optical signal processing (OSP) could potentially increase network flexibility because of its transparency, tunability, and large bandwidth. A low-loss, high nonlinearity, and compact integrated material platform is always the pursuit of OSP. In this Letter, a high-efficiency, one-to-six wavelength multicasting of 10 Gbaud pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM3/PAM4) signals using a 6 cm long Al0.2Ga0.8As-on-insulator nanowaveguide is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The low-loss, combined with the high nonlinear coefficient of the AlGaAsOI platform, enables us to achieve -11.2dB average conversion efficiency clear eye diagrams and <2.1dB power penalty at KP4-forward error correction threshold (2.4×10-4) for all the output PAM3/PAM4 multicasting channels. This result points to a new generation of nonlinear OSP photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matched interactions in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearities enable highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversion. In this paper, we demonstrate the first generation of devices that combine the dispersion engineering available in nanophotonic waveguides with quasi-phase-matched nonlinear interactions available in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). This combination enables quasi-static interactions of femtosecond pulses, reducing the pulse energy requirements by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional devices, from picojoules to femtojoules. We experimentally demonstrate two effects associated with second harmonic generation (SHG). First, we observe efficient quasi-phase-matched SHG with of pulse energy. Second, in the limit of strong phase-mismatch, we observe spectral broadening of both harmonics with as little as 2 pJ of pulse energy. These results lay a foundation for a new class of nonlinear devices, in which coengineering of dispersion with quasi-phase-matching enables efficient nonlinear optics at the femtojoule level. © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement
