Abstract:Hierarchical V2O5 microspheres composed of stacked platelets are fabricated through a facile, low-cost, and energy-saving approach. The preparation procedure involves a room-temperature precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution and subsequent calcination. Because of this unique structure, V2O5 microspheres manifest a high capacity (266 mA h g(-1)), excellent rate capability (223 mA h g(-1) at a current density 2400 mA g(-1)), and good cycling stability (200 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical three-dimensional (3D) vanadium oxide microstructures, including urchin-like microflowers, nanohorn-structured microspheres, nanosheet-assembled microflowers, and nanosheets bundles, are successfully synthesized by a versatile template-free solvothermal method. It is found that the concentration of the precursor (VOC(2)O(4)) solution has a significant effect on the morphologies of the products. As an example, the time-dependent phase and morphology evolution for the urchin-like vanadium oxide microflowers has been investigated in detail. Urchin-like VO(2) microflowers can be self-assembled within 2 h without using any surfactants. After calcination, the VO(2) microflowers can be easily transformed to urchin-like V(2)O(5) microstructures. The as-obtained V(2)O(5) microflowers are highly porous with a specific surface area of 33.64 m(2) g(-1). When evaluated as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the V(2)O(5) sample delivers very high specific discharge capacity of 267 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 300 mA g(-1). Further, it also exhibits improved cycling stability. The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to multiple advantageous structural features, including the nanosized building blocks, high porosity, and the 3D hierarchical microstructures.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-structured two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet is favorable for electrochemical reactions. The unique structure not only exposes the maximized active sites and shortens ion/electron diffusion channels, but also inhibits the structural strain during cycling processes. Herein, we report the hierarchical flower-like pure spinel manganese-based oxide nanosheets synthesized via a template-orientated strategy. The oriented template is fabricated by decomposition of carbonate obtained from "bubble reaction" via an alcohol-assisted hydrothermal process. The resultant spinel manganese-based oxide nanosheets simultaneously possess excellent rate capability and cycling stability. The high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO-HF) has a uniform phase distribution without the common impurity phase LixNi1-xO2 and NixO. Besides, the LNMO-HF delivers high discharge capacity of 142.6 mA h g-1 with specific energy density of 660.7 W h kg-1 at 1 C under 55°C. More importantly, the template-orientated strategy can be extended to the synthesis of LiMn2O4 (LMO), which can achieve 88.12% capacity retention after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Nanosheet-assembled hierarchical V(2)O(5) hollow microspheres are successfully obtained from V-glycolate precursor hollow microspheres, which in turn are synthesized by a simple template-free solvothermal method. The structural evolution of the V-glycolate hollow microspheres has been studied and explained by the inside-out Ostwald-ripening mechanism. The surface morphologies of the hollow microspheres can be controlled by varying the mixture solution and the solvothermal reaction time. After calcination in air, hierarchical V(2)O(5) hollow microspheres with a high surface area of 70 m(2) g(-1) can be obtained and the structure is well preserved. When evaluated as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the as-prepared hierarchical V(2)O(5) hollow spheres deliver a specific discharge capacity of 144 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1), which is very close to the theoretical capacity (147 mA h g(-1)) for one Li(+) insertion per V(2)O(5) . In addition, excellent rate capability and cycling stability are observed, suggesting their promising use in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres self-assembled by nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 10 nm have been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route together with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and sodium citrate. As TMAH is only used without any sodium citrate, the obtained products are ZnO nanoplates with a thickness of similar to 50 nm and a lateral size of similar to 300 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and N-2-physisorption technique were employed to characterize the phase composition and microstructure of the synthesized samples. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible formation mechanism of the ZnO nanoplates and the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres has been proposed. Due to the ultrathin nanosheet and mesostructure feature, the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres as anode exhibit significant improvements in reversible capacities and cycle performance over the ZnO nanoplates. Abstract:Vanadium nitride (VN) is a promising energy storage material due to its high theoretical capacity and good electrical conductivity. However, the unbearable volume expansion due to the lithium insertion impedes its application for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a simple, template-free strategy is developed to synthesize a micron-sized flower-like hierarchical structure made of N-doped carbon layers, embedding VN nanoparticles and outer carbon shell (denoted as VN/NC-MF@C). Profiting from the unique structure, the VN/NC-MF@C composite delivers an excellent reversible capacity (601 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1)) and ultra-long cycle durability with retention of 92.6% after 5000 cycles at 2 A g(-1). More remarkably, the LiCoO2 parallel to VN/NC-MF@C full LIBs also demonstrate extraordinary long-term cycle stability, retaining 94.8% of the initial capacity after 1300 cycles at 1 A g(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance of the composite provides inspirations and strategies for developing new unique hierarchical materials with stable, high-performance properties for commercial use in LIBs.

Abstract:Lithium-ion storage materials with significantly improved performance were developed through the hierarchical assemblies of vanadium-based oxide (V2O5 and LiV3O8) nanorods or iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanocrystals using an efficient, continuous aerosol-spray process. Such hierarchically porous spheres, which were made from networks of low-dimension building blocks, result in materials with reduced ion-diffusion length, fast electrolyte diffusion, and structural robustness. Due to their unique hierarchical structure, these spheres exhibit high lithium storage capacity, excellent cycling stability and good rate capability. This work presents a novel synthesis approach toward better lithium-ion storage materials.

Abstract:Vanadium oxides have recently attracted widespread attention due to their unique advantages and have demonstrated promising chemical and physical properties for energy storage. This work develops a mild and efficient method to stereoassemble hollow V2O5@FeOOH heterostructured nanoflowers with thin nanosheets. These dual-phased architectures possess multiple lithiation voltage plateau and well-defined heterointerfaces facilitating efficient charge transfer, mass diffusion, and self-reconstruction with volumetric strain. As a proof of concept, the resulting V2O5@FeOOH hollow nanoflowers as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) realize high-specific capacities, long lifespans, and superior rate capabilities, e.g., maintaining a specific capacity as high as 985 mAhg(-1) at 200 mAg(-1) with good cyclability.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanocomposites of V2O5 thin film anchored on graphene sheets were prepared by slow hydrolysis of vanadyl triisobutoxide on graphene oxide followed by thermal treatment. The nanocomposite possessed a hierarchical structure of thin V2O5 film uniformly grown on graphene, leading to a high specific surface area and a good electronic/ionic conducting path. When used as the cathode material, the graphene/V2O5 nanosheet nanocomposites exhibit higher specific capacity, better rate performance, and longer cycle life, as compared to the pure V2O5. The nanocomposite cathode was able to deliver a specific capacity of 243 mAh/g, 191 mAh/g, and 86 mAh/g at a current density of 50 mA/g, 500 mA/g, and 15 A/g, respectively. Even after 300 cycles at 500 mA/g, the composite electrode still exhibited a specific capacity of ∼ 122 mAh/g, which corresponds to ∼ 64% of its initial capacity. This enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to facile electron transport between graphene and V2O5, fast Li-ion diffusion within the electrode, the high surface area of the composites, and a pore structure that can accommodate the volume change during lithiation/delithiation, which results from the unique hierarchical nanostructure of the V2O5 anchored on graphene.
Self-Assembled Synthesis of Hierarchical Waferlike Porous Li–V–O Composites As Cathode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Wafer-like porous xLiV(3)O(8)-yLi(0.3)V(2)O(5) (Li-V-O) composites are synthesized by a facile self-assembled synthesis using a glycine-assisted solution route followed by a low-temperature reaction. The crystalline compounds have a uniform shape and distribution of sizes, and the primary particles are platelike in shape with 150-500 nm in length and 80-200 nm in width. Such porous materials have many advantages such as good electrical contact among the particles and easy for electrolyte to penetrate the active materials, thus facilitating improvement in the electrochemical performance of Li-intercalation cathode. Among these Li-V-O composites, the one synthesized at 400 degrees C, which has 27.06 wt % Li(0.3)V(2)O(5), exhibits the highest initial discharge capacities of 300.5, 265.7, and 237.0 mAh g(-1) at current densities of 20 (C/15), 50 (C/6), and 120 mA g(-1) (0.4 C) between 2.0 and 4.0 V, respectively. The good electrochemical performance of the as-synthesized composite can be attributed to the porous structure, thus highly favors the solid-state diffusion kinetics and enhances the capacity of the Li-V-O electrode. The ease of synthetic preparation of this novel porous Li-V-O composite together with its good electrochemical performance shows promise application in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Vanadium oxides, as a potential cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), have received extensive attention from researchers owing to their significant advantages in terms of theoretical specific capacity, energy density, and power density. However, vanadium oxides lead to irreversible decay of specific capacity during cycling for reasons such as poor structural stability and electrical conductivity. In this paper, the flower-like VO 2 (B) microsphere assembled from ultrathin nanosheets was synthesized successfully by hydrothermal method, and their effects on the morphology as well as the phase of VO 2 (B) are investigated by varying the hydrothermal reaction time and the concentration of oxalic acid. The results show that the flower-like VO 2 (B) microsphere electrode material not only provides a larger active area, but also offers a faster lithium ion diffusion rate and a shorter charge transport path, resulting in a high reversible capacity, outstanding rate performance, and excellent long cycle life. The flower-like VO 2 (B) microsphere electrode exhibited a first discharge specific capacity of 282.9 mAh/g (at a current density of 0.1 A/g) and a capacity retention of 80.7 % after 50 cycles. In addition, the electrode material shows a first discharge specific capacity of 209.6 mAh/g at a high current density (1 A/g) and a capacity retention rate of 83.1 % after 200 cycles. Consequently, the VO 2 (B) provides great development potential as a cathode material for next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Among vanadium-based materials, V6O13 is considered to be an ideal cathode candidate material due to its high theoretical capacity and energy density. However, as mixed-valence vanadium oxide, it faces the challenge of controllable synthesis, and suffers unsatisfactory cycle performance due to the unstable structure. Constructing 3D micro/nano-structures is a very effective method to solve the above problems. Herein, we report a simple template-free solvothermal method to controllably synthesize 3D hollow microflowers structure formed by self-assembly of thin nanosheets. The growth mechanism of the hollow microflowers is revealed by changing the solvothermal reaction time and the content of ethylene glycol. As a cathode material for Li-ion batteries, the V6O13 hollow microflowers exhibit an initial discharge specific capacity of 326 mAh/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g. Even at a high current density of 1 A/g, the V6O13 hollow microflowers still deliver a discharge capacity of 183.2 mAh/g, and display high capacity retention of 75.6% after 500 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance benefits from the unique advantages of 3D hollow microflowers structure, that is, large specific surface area, abundant mesopores, and robust structure. These results indicate that the V6O13 hollow microflowers have great potential as the long-life and high-rate cathode materials for the next generation of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical tubular structures constructed by ultrathin carbon-coated SnO(2) nanoplates are rationally designed and synthesized. This interesting structure simultaneously integrates the structural and compositional design rationales for high-energy anode materials based on low-dimensional ultrathin nanoplates, a hollow tubular structure, and a carbon nanocoating. When evaluated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized SnO(2)-carbon hybrid structure manifests high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Novel flowerlike VO2 (B) micro-nanostructures assembled by single-crystalline nanosheets have been Successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal route using polymer polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP, K30) as capping reagent. Detailed proof's indicated that the process of crystal growth was dominated by a nucleation and growth. self-assembly, and then Ostwald ripening growth mechanism. For the first time, the flowerlike micro-nanostructures VO2 (B) was applied as the active material into aqueous lithium ion battery applications, which showed improved electrochemical properties with the first discharge capacity reaching 74.9 mAhg(-1), a quite Outstanding value for aqueous lithium ion battery systems in light of previous reports (usually <65 mAhg (-1)). In addition, corresponding VO2 (B) nanostructures with better crystallinity were obtained by calcining the precursor of flowerlike VO2 (B) structures. The post-treated flowerlike VO2 (B) electrode shows fascinating advantages in electrochemical properties with the first discharge capacity reaching 81.3 mAhg(-1), which is higher than that of the flowerlike VO2 (B) sample before annealing. Furthermore, we have investigated the electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation properties with Li+ file synthesized VO2 (B) nanobelts and carambola-like VO2 (B) structure. The unique flowerlike structure plays a basic role in the morphology requirement to serve as transport paths for lithium ion in aqueous lithium ion batteries. It was observed that the morphologies and crystallinity of the synthesized products had ail evident influence oil the electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation properties with lithium ions.
Self-assembly of Co3V2O8 multilayered nanosheets: controllable synthesis, excellent Li-storage properties, and investigation of electrochemical mechanism

Abstract:Developing electrode materials with both high energy and power densities holds the key for satisfying the urgent demand of energy storage worldwide. Herein, we demonstrate the successful preparation of Co3V2O8 nanostructures that are constructed from self-assembly of ultrathin nanosheets via a simple hydrothermal method followed by annealing in air at 350 °C for 2 h. A "slipping-exfoliating-self reassembly" model based on the time-dependent experiments was proposed to elucidate the formation of the hierarchical nanosheets. When tested as lithium ion anodes, the as-synthesized multilayered nanoarchitectures exhibit outstanding reversible capacity (1114 mA h g(-1) retained after 100 cycles) and excellent rate performance (361 mA h g(-1) at a high current density of 10 A g(-1)) for lithium storage. Detailed investigations of the morphological and structural changes of Co3V2O8 upon cycling reveal an interesting kinetics toward lithium ion intercalations, where reversible conversion reactions between Co and CoO are found proceeding on the amorphous lithiated vanadium oxides matrixes. We believe that this observation is a valuable discovery for metal vandates-based lithium ion anodes. The superior electrochemical performances of the multilayered Co3V2O8 nanosheets can be attributed to the unique morphologies and particularly the surface-to-surface constructions that are generated during the lithium ion insertion processes.
Facile synthesis of tetragonal NaV2O5·H2O nanosheets co-intercalated by high content of Na+ and H2O for boosted lithium storage

Abstract:Na x V2O5·yH2O have been considered to be very promising electrode materials in the energy storage field by virtue of their V4+/V5+ mixed valences and co-intercalated Na+/H2O. However, the as-reported Na x V2O5·yH2O usually present the low content of Na+ and the anisotropy of Li+ diffusion in the plane direction. Herein, we successfully synthesize a tetragonal NaV2O5·H2O nanosheets co-intercalated by high content of Na+ and H2O via a simple one-step hydrothermal method under broad synthesis conditions, where S2- reductant has been proved to bevery significantforits successful synthesis. With the synergistic effect of the isotropy of tetragonal lattice in the plane direction, and the co-intercalated high content of Na+ and H2O, NaV2O5·H2O nanosheets as anode material for lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The initial discharge and charge capacities are up to 859 and 607 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and the capacity is maintained at 473 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles, which are outperform other reported layered sodium/lithium vanadate, lithium titanate, lithium/titanium niobate and graphite. In addition, we also reveal that the active material during cycling process is the Li x Na y V2O5·H2O with stable crystal structure and morphology, and the Li+ storage process is coequally determined by diffusion and pseudocapacitive behavior.

Abstract:Developing electrode materials with both high energy and power densities holds the key for satisfying the urgent demand of energy storage worldwide. In order to realize the fast and efficient transport of ions/electrons and the stable structure during the charge/discharge process, hierarchical porous Fe3O4/graphene nanowires supported by amorphous vanadium oxide matrixes have been rationally synthesized through a facile phase separation process. The porous structure is directly in situ constructed from the FeVO4·1.1H2O@graphene nanowires along with the crystallization of Fe3O4 and the amorphization of vanadium oxide without using any hard templates. The hierarchical porous Fe3O4/VOx/graphene nanowires exhibit a high Coulombic efficiency and outstanding reversible specific capacity (1146 mAh g(-1)). Even at the high current density of 5 A g(-1), the porous nanowires maintain a reversible capacity of ∼500 mAh g(-1). Moreover, the amorphization and conversion reactions between Fe and Fe3O4 of the hierarchical porous Fe3O4/VOx/graphene nanowires were also investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our work demonstrates that the amorphous vanadium oxides matrixes supporting hierarchical porous Fe3O4/graphene nanowires are one of the most attractive anodes in energy storage applications.
Synergistic realization of Co/N co-doped hierarchical vanadium trioxide core–shell sphere for ultra-long cycle performance of Li–S batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery has been recognized as one of the most promising energy systems due to its high specific capacity and energy density. However, its instinct defects, such as shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide (LPS), low conductivity, and high volume expansion of cathode sulfur (S), seriously hinder its commercialization process. Herein, a hierarchical vanadium trioxide (V 2 O 3 ) core–shell sphere, which is self-assembled from zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles and integrated with 2D nanosheets and co-doped cobalt (Co) and nitrogen (N), has been prepared. After the hierarchical V 2 O 3 core–shell sphere being served as a separator modifier, a synergistic effect of physisorption, chemisorption, and catalytic conversion of LPS can be well realized, leading to an effective inhibition of the shuttle effect. Hence, exceptional initial discharging capacities of 1485.3 and 1322.2 mAh g −1 can be obtained at 0.1 and 1C, respectively, and after 1100 ultra-long cycles, the capacity loss rate can be restricted at 0.064% per cycle; furthermore, a discharging capacity of 973.9 mAh g −1 can also be obtained even at a high current of 3C, and the capacity loss rate is only 0.059% per cycle during 1000 ultra-long cycles, showing extraordinary ultra-long cycle performance and rate performance.
