Abstract:Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has high sensitivity and can response to the change of trace matter on the surface of quartz crystal. QCM can be used to detect the mass change in nanogram scale and the thickness change in nanometer scale, which has extensive applications in diversely research fields of analytical chemistry. In this article, the working principle and basic equations of QCM were illustrated. The recent applications and advances of QCM analysis in the studies of polymer thin film were then reviewed, including the measurement of thickness and mechanical properties of the polymer thin film, the adsorption and conformation evolution of polymer chains on the surface of quartz crystal, the polymerization kinetics of surface initiated polymer brushes, chemical- and bio-sensors based on functional polymer thin film and QCM, and so on. The further applications and development of QCM analysis in the research field of polymer thin film were also discussed.

Abstract:We developed a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based molecular ruler that measures the length of surface immobilized, hydrated biopolymers (DNA and proteins). These biopolymers acted as stakes that solidified surrounding liquid at high frequency vibration in QCM measurements, which led to a simple linear frequency-thickness relation.

Abstract:Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is a nondestructive technique in investigating the physical properties of solid-liquid interfacial layer in situ. It has the capability of quantifying the extremely tiny force change occurring on the interface by measuring the frequency shift Δ f and the energy dissipation change Δ D (or the half-bandwidth variation Δ Γ). The quantitative analysis of QCM results greatly depends on the theoretical models, whose development could generally expand the comprehension of the properties at the interfaces and the application of QCM. In the paper, the progresses on the theory and applications of QCM are reviewed. Applications of Quartz Crystal Microbalance in Polymer Studies

Abstract:In this review, the authors introduce the brief history, basic principles, sample preparation, and applications of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). With the development of QCM technique, the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) has been employed to carry out the studies in a wide range of fields of polymer films because it can simultaneously obtain the information on the changes in mass and stiffness of polymer films. Moreover, the combined QCM-D and spectroscopic ellipsometry (QCM-D/SE) technique can be used to further obtain the thickness change and other information of polymer films. To demonstrate the applications of QCM-D in polymer studies, this review presents how the QCM-D and QCM-D/SE can be used to study the conformational behaviors of polymers grafted at interfaces, the ionic effects on polymers, and the polymeric marine antifouling materials. Specifically, (i) QCM-D can be used to study both the conformational behaviors of grafted polymers during the pancake-to-brush and mushroom-to-brush transitions and the stimuli-responsive behaviors of grafted polymers with temperature, pH, and salt concentration as the external stimuli; (ii) QCM-D/SE can be applied to study the ionic effects on polyelectrolyte brushes including specific ion effects, ionic hydrogen bond effects, and ionic hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity effects. The relevant studies can not only clarify the mechanisms of the ionic effects on polyelectrolyte brushes, but also demonstrate that the properties of polyelectrolyte brushes can be tuned with these ionic effects; (iii) QCM-D can be employed to evaluate the performance of polymeric marine antifouling materials, providing a method to screen the materials in laboratory, saving much time and money for marine field tests. The authors hope that this review can provide an inspiration on how to apply QCM-D to carry out polymer studies, enabling this technique to solve more problems in the field of polymers.

Abstract:The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is widely used to study surface adsorbed molecules, often of biological significance. However, the relation between raw acoustic response (frequency shift $\Delta f$ and dissipation factor $\Delta D$) and mechanical properties of the macromolecules still needs to be deciphered, particularly in the case of suspended discrete particles. We study the QCM response of suspended liposomes tethered to the resonator wall by double stranded DNA, with the other end attached to surface-adsorbed neutravidin through a biotin linker. Liposome radius and dsDNA contour length are comparable to the wave penetration depth ($\delta\sim 100\ \mathrm{nm}$). Simulations, based on the immersed boundary method and an elastic network model for the liposome-DNA complex, are in good agreement with experimental results for POPC liposomes. We find that the added stress at the resonator surface, i.e. the impedance Z sensed by QCM, is dominated by the flow-induced liposome surface-stress, which propagates towards the resonator by viscous forces. QCM signals are extremely sensitive to the liposome's height distribution P(y) which depends on the actual number and mechanical properties of the tethers, in addition to the usual local attractive/repulsive chemical forces. Our approach helps in deciphering the role of hydrodynamics in acoustic sensing and revealing the role of parameters hitherto largely unexplored. A practical consequence would be the design of improved biosensors and detection schemes.

Abstract:The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is an important tool that can sense nanogram changes in mass. The hybrid temperature effect on a QCM resonator in aqueous solutions leads to unconvincing detection results. Control of the temperature effect is one of the keys when using the QCM for high precision measurements. Based on the Sauerbrey's and Kanazawa's theories, we proposed a method for enhancing the accuracy of the QCM measurement, which takes into account not only the thermal variations of viscosity and density but also the thermal behavior of the QCM resonator. We presented an improved Sauerbrey equation that can be used to effectively compensate the drift of the QCM resonator. These results will play a significant role when applying the QCM at the room temperature.

Abstract:As an ultra-sensitive mass sensing device, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) can also be used to detect a variety of analytes in liquid environment. Previous works reported separate density and viscosity measurements of liquid by using dual QCMs. In this work, we present a novel theoretical model and a new method to separate density and viscosity measurements of liquid only using a single QCM, based on the frequency response analysis. Experimental results demonstrate the merit of the single QCM setup in determining the physical properties of liquid is an exciting new solvent.

Abstract:Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM) is a testing technique that combines quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and electrochemical detection. EQCM is one of effective methods to study the surface reaction due to its simplicity, rapidness, and the ability to dynamically detect the deposition, adsorption, or dissolution of an active material on a quartz crystal at nanogram level. At the same time, because the EQCM testing technology is an in-situ testing method, online real-time monitoring can be realized. With its high precision and high sensitivity, it is possible to further analyze the reaction process and deep-level mechanism at the surface interface. This paper summarizes the application of EQCM in the fields of electrochemical, biomedical and oil field chemistry, as well as research mechanism and dynamics, and puts forward the new research direction of EQCM and the problems in its development.

Abstract:Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensors are actively being implemented in various fields due to their compatibility with different operating conditions in gaseous/liquid mediums for a wide range of measurements. This trend has been matched by the parallel advancement in tailored electronic interfacing systems for QCM sensors. That is, selecting the appropriate electronic circuit is vital for accurate sensor measurements. Many techniques were developed over time to cover the expanding measurement requirements (e.g., accommodating highly-damping environments). This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various existing QCM electronic interfacing systems. Namely, impedance-based analysis, oscillators (conventional and lock-in based techniques), exponential decay methods and the emerging phase-mass based characterization. The aforementioned methods are discussed in detail and qualitatively compared in terms of their performance for various applications. In addition, some theoretical improvements and recommendations are introduced for adequate systems implementation. Finally, specific design considerations of high-temperature microbalance systems (e.g., GaPO₄ crystals (GCM) and Langasite crystals (LCM)) are introduced, while assessing their overall system performance, stability and quality compared to conventional low-temperature applications.

Depending on the ionic concentration or flow rates, portion of the particles are trapped on the glass substrate due to intrinsic surface forces. Abstract:Integrating acoustic wave sensors into lab-on-a-chip (LoC) devices is a well-known challenge. We address this challenge by designing a microfluidic device housing a monolithic array of 24 high-fundamental frequency quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (HFF-QCMD) sensors. The device features six 6-μL channels of four sensors each for low-volume parallel measurements, a sealing mechanism that provides appropriate pressure control while assuring liquid confinement and maintaining good stability, and provides a mechanical, electrical, and thermal interface with the characterization electronics. We validate the device by measuring the response of the HFF-QCMD sensors to the air-to-liquid transition, for which the robust Kanazawa–Gordon–Mason theory exists, and then by studying the adsorption of model bioanalytes (neutravidin and biotinylated albumin). With these experiments, we show how the effects of the protein–surface interactions propagate within adsorbed protein multilayers, offering essentially new insight into the design of affinity-based bioanalytical sensors.

Abstract:A new data treatment method for the improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was proposed, where an averaged resonant frequency was calculated according to its conductance peak in an impedance analysis method. The relationship between the averaged resonant frequency and the medians of the conductance peak at different sampling heights was derived. It was shown that the signal-to-noise ratio of the averaged resonant frequency was about eight times of that of the resonant frequency calculated directly from its equivalent circuit parameters. The averaged resonant frequency of the QCM was applied to monitor the self-assembled process of a 6-O-(2′-(α-thiohydroxyacetamide)-ethyl)-diethoxylsilyl-β-cyclodextrin (OTED-β-CD), on gold surface as well as the adsorption of nitrophenol isomers onto the OTED-β-CD self-assembled monolayer film.

Abstract:Despite extensive advances in the field of molecular recognition, the real-time monitoring of small molecule binding to nanoparticles (NP) remains a challenge. To this end, we report on a versatile approach, based on quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, for the stepwise in situ quantification of gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) immobilisation and subsequent uptake and release of binding partners. AuNPs stabilised by thiol-bound ligand shells of prescribed chemical composition were densely immobilised onto gold surfaces via dithiol linkers. The boronate ester formation between salicylic acid derivatives in solution and boronic acids in the AuNP ligand shell was then studied in real time, revealing a drastic effect of both ligand architecture and Lewis base concentration on the interaction strength. The binding kinetics were analysed with frequency response modelling for a thorough comparison of binding parameters including relaxation time as well as association rate constant. The results directly mirror those from previously reported in-depth studies using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. By achieving quantitative characterisation of selective binding of analytes with molecular weight below 300 Da, this new method enables rapid, low cost, rational screening of AuNP candidates for molecular recognition.
