Abstract:We report an in situ liquid cell scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) study of the heterogeneous deposition of palladium (Pd) on spherical gold (Au) nanoparticles in solution.The dynamic processes observed here revealed different behaviors of Pd deposition on Au nanoparticles.Under irradiation by an energetic electron beam,Pd was reduced and selectively deposited on Au nanoparticles through the island deposition mode.The deposition processes were accompanied with structural relaxation and surface migration of the Pd islands,and the size of the Au-Pd composite particles showed oscillatory growth behavior.In contrast,the Pd coverage on Au increased monotonically.In addition,we also captured the formation of Pd clusters through homogeneous nucleation and growth,and the subsequent coalescence of Pd clusters with islands on the Au-Pd heterostructures.The associated heterogeneous deposition mechanisms were proposed and quantitatively analyzed.The shapes and structures of the Au-Pd composite particles were characterized by highresolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),which revealed the deposited Pd on the Au spherical nanoparticles was polycrystalline and contained several Pd crystallites with random orientations.The results presented here will serve as an important reference to understand heterogeneous growth in liquid solutions.

Abstract:We present a method for characterizing ultrasmall (<2 nm) supported crystallites with benchtop XRD. Central to the method is an understanding of the intensity effects at play; these intensity effects and their corrections are discussed in depth. Background subtractionlong considered one of the main barriers to ultrasmall crystal characterizationis solved by correcting the diffractogram of a separately measured support for the relevant intensity effects. Rietveld refinement is demonstrated to be an adequate analysis method for the general characterization of simple nanosystems. A 4.8% Pt/SiO2 sample (1.3 nm, volume-weighted average) is used as a case study; it is found that the Pt spontaneously oxidizes under ambient conditions and consists of a metallic core surrounded by a PtO2 shell. Both phases have average dimensions smaller than 1 nm. The XRD results also suggest lattice expansion of the Pt core as compared to bulk Pt.

Abstract:X-ray characterization of catalyst materials using synchrotron radiation has become more widely available to the scientific community in recent decades. Techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) have enabled in-situ and in-operando studies of dilute catalyst sites for heterogeneous catalyst materials in order to obtain information about local geometric and electronic structure and how it impacts chemical transformations. Non-resonant or valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy (NR-XES or VtC-XES) is an emerging technique used to probe changes to the d-electron density of states (d-DOS) for various factors such as ligand environment or alloy formation. In this study, VtC-XES provides insights into the electronic structure of Pt nanoparticles of different sizes dispersed in a typical heterogeneous catalyst support of SiO2. The results experimentally verify that the d-band center of the Pt catalysts systematically increases with decreasing nanoparticle size. Going from a fully coordinated Pt foil to Pt nanoparticles of 2 nm in diameter, the shift in the d-band center scales linearly with the proportion of surface Pt atoms to bulk Pt atoms. While VtC-XES shows that the filled Pt 5d states shift systematically to higher energy, XANES shows that the unfilled Pt 5d states also shift systematically to higher energy. These findings align with previous computational and experimental studies and confirm that in-situ VtC-XES is a capable technique for assessing the d-DOS of catalyst materials with dilute metal loadings (<2 wt%). Moreover, a beamline with an in-situ XAS capability can be coupled with VtC-XES to holistically assess both the geometric (EXAFS) and electronic structure (XANES, VtC-XES) of a catalyst under realistic reaction conditions. This capability is accessible to others to apply to their catalytic problems to help drive the design of future catalyst materials.

Abstract:Stable and metastable metallic nanoparticles exhibit unique properties compared to the bulk, with potentially important applications for catalysis. This is in particular the case for the AgPt alloy that can exhibit the ordered L1$_1$ structure (alternation of pure Ag and Pt (111) planes) in nanometer size particles. However, for such small systems, the interfaces play an important role. Therefore, the support used to elaborate the nanoparticles in ultrahigh vacuum experiments may influence their properties, even in the case of weakly interacting substrates like amorphous carbon or silica. This work focuses on the AgPt nanoparticles deposited on silica, and investigates the effect of the support disorder and roughness on the structure and chemical ordering, in particular at the interface with the substrate, by Monte Carlo calculations of the atomic density profiles with semi-empiric potentials.

Abstract:Achieving metal nanocrystals with metastable phase draws much attention due to their anticipated fascinating properties, wheras it is still challenging because their polymorphism nature and phase transition mechanism remain elusive. Here, phase stability of face-centered cubic (fcc) Pd nanocrystals was studied via <i>in situ</i> spherical aberration (Cs)-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By constructing a well-defined Pd/C composite structure, Pd nanocrystals encapsulated by graphite, the dispersion process of fcc Pd was observed through a nucleation and growth process. Interestingly, Cs-corrected scanning TEM analysis demonstrated that the newly formed Pd nanocrystals could adopt a metastable hexagonal phase, which was considered challenging to obtain. Accordingly, formation mechanism of the hexagonal Pd nanocrystals was proposed, which involved the combined effect of two factors: (1) templating of graphite and (2) size effect. This work is expected to offer new insight into the polymorphism of Pd nanocrystals and pave the way for the future design of metastable metal nanomaterials.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts often consist of metal sites ranging from nanoparticles to subnanometer clusters and single atoms. It remains a necessity to differentiate these sites to guide design of optimal catalysts. Here we report a simple method to assess the distribution of metal active sites in catalyst samples. The method takes the advantage of the structure sensitivity of styrene hydrogenation over titania supported platinum (Pt) catalysts with Pt aggregates varied from single atom to ∼1.40 nm nanoparticles. The physicochemical properties were characterized by STEM, XPS, XANES, H2-TPR and CO-chemisorption measurements. The reactivity of Pt sites was quantified by styrene hydrogenation at ambient conditions. The nanometer-sized Pt clusters have significantly higher activity than Pt nanoparticles, sub-nanometer clusters or isolated single atoms. The relationship between activity and structural/electronic properties of Pt sites influenced by particle sizes was discussed. Similar relationship was found in the carbon supported Pt catalysts.

Abstract:The spillover of hydrogen species and its role in tuning the activity and selectivity in catalytic hydrogenation have been investigated in situ using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with 10 nm spatial resolution through the precise fabrication of Au/TiO2 /Pt sandwich nanostructures. In situ SERS study reveals that hydrogen species can efficiently spillover at Pt-TiO2 -Au interfaces, and the ultimate spillover distance on TiO2 is about 50 nm. Combining kinetic isotope experiments and density functional theory calculations, it is found that the hydrogen spillover proceeds via the water-assisted cleavage and formation of surface hydrogen-oxygen bond. More importantly, the selectivity in the hydrogenation of the nitro or isocyanide group is manipulated by controlling the hydrogen spillover. This work provides molecular insights to deepen the understanding of hydrogen activation and boosts the design of active and selective catalysts for hydrogenation.

Abstract:Atomic motion at grain boundaries is essential to microstructure development, growth and stability of catalysts and other nanostructured materials. However, boundary atomic motion is often too fast to observe in a conventional transmission electron microscope (TEM) and too slow for ultrafast electron microscopy. Here, we report on the entire transformation process of strained Pt icosahedral nanoparticles (ICNPs) into larger FCC crystals, captured at 2.5 ms time resolution using a fast electron camera. Results show slow diffusive dislocation motion at nm/s inside ICNPs and fast surface transformation at μm/s. By characterizing nanoparticle strain, we show that the fast transformation is driven by inhomogeneous surface stress. And interaction with pre-existing defects led to the slowdown of the transformation front inside the nanoparticles. Particle coalescence, assisted by oxygen-induced surface migration at T ≥ 300 °C, also played a critical role. Thus by studying transformation in the Pt ICNPs at high time and spatial resolution, we obtain critical insights into the transformation mechanisms in strained Pt nanoparticles.

Abstract:Understanding the atomic structure of a catalyst is crucial to exposing the source of its performance characteristics. It is highly unlikely that a catalyst remains the same under reaction conditions when compared to as-synthesized. Hence, the ideal experiment to study the catalyst structure should be performed in situ. Here, we use X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as an in situ technique to study Pt3Ni nanoframe particles which have been proven to be an excellent electro catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The surface characteristics of the nanoframes were probed through electrochemical hydrogen underpotential deposition and carbon monoxide electrooxidation, which showed that nanoframe surfaces with different structure exhibit varying levels of binding strength to adsorbate molecules. It is well-known that Pt-skin formation on Pt-Ni catalysts will enhance ORR activity by weakening the binding energy between the surface and adsorbates. Ex situ and in situ XAS results reveal that nanoframes which bind adsorbates more strongly have a rougher Pt surface caused by insufficient segregation of Pt to the surface and consequent Ni dissolution. In contrast, nanoframes which exhibit extremely high ORR activity simultaneously demonstrate more significant segregation of Pt over Ni-rich subsurface layers, allowing better formation of the critical Pt-skin. This work demonstrates that the high ORR activity of the Pt3Ni hollow nanoframes depends on successful formation of the Pt-skin surface structure.

Abstract:Bimetallic alloy particles supported on high-surface area carbon are widely used as electrode materials. Because of their stability, Pt-Sn alloys are of particulate interest for a variety of applications. Although the reasons for the superior properties of these catalysts are not fully understood, the dispersion, structure, and compositional homogeneity of the alloy clusters, are clearly important factors in determining their catalytic activity. In order to identify the composition and structure of Pt-Sn base nanoparticles, various characterization techniques, mainly X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) [1], have been applied. However, very often conflicting conclusions regarding to the structure of Pt-Sn particles have been reported. The focus of the present work is to examine a commercially available carbon supported bimetallic Pt-Sn catalyst, with a nominal Pt:Sn wt. ratio of 2:1 (500N and 900N samples) and 3:1 (E270 sample), using high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), electron and X-ray diffraction techniques, and microchemical analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoparticles play an important role in potential industrial applications, such as catalysis, optoelectronics, information storage and biological labeling. Herein, homogeneous Cu-Pt core-shell nanoparticles with the averaged size of 8 nm have been synthesized by chemical methods. Cu atoms diffusion process, which motivated by heating, was observed in-situ by using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Results show that Cu diffuse gradually from Cu core to Pt shell in these nanoparticles with increasing temperature. We also found the surface ligand (O) bonded Pt at the room temperature and were removed gradually by heating the sample. The analysis of the diffusion process in bimetallic nanoparticles will provide important guideline for their designing and tuning.

Abstract:Metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted significant attention in research because of their wide applicability in various areas. Because the properties of metallic NPs can be regulated by altering the covered ligand layer, it is crucial to be able to probe the composition, structure, and dynamic processes of molecules on metallic NPs for understanding nanoparticle–molecule interactions so as to enable the exploiting of NPs with desired properties and functionalities. However, a detailed description of the conformations of molecules and the dynamic interactions between molecules and metallic NPs is challenging owing to the requirement of real‐time, in situ, and non‐destructive surface probing technologies. This review presents an overview of probing the structures and dynamic processes of molecules on the surface of metallic NPs by different spectroscopic techniques.

Abstract:We demonstrate how the acquisition and processing of 3D electron diffraction data can be extended to characterize structural features on the mesoscale, and show how lattice distortions in superlattices of self-assembled spherical Pd nanoparticles can be quantified by three-dimensional small-angle electron diffraction tomography (3D SA-EDT). Transmission electron microscopy real space imaging and 3D SA-EDT reveal a high density of stacking faults that was related to a competition between fcc and hcp arrangements during assembly. Information on the orientation of the stacking faults was used to make analogies between planar defects in the superlattices and Shockley partial dislocations in metallic systems.
