Abstract:Driving microfluidic flow in micropixels by electrowetting to realize light switches and displays is of both practical and fundamental significance. The electro-optical performance related to microfluidic behavior needs to be clarified to optimize device functions. In this article, the microfluidic performance in electrowetting display devices was categorized according to the oil-water interface shape and response. The oil film movement was divided into vertically "thinning" and transversally "opening," for which the "thinning" process was found the key factor determining the pixel switching speed rather than the "opening" process. Therefore, the breakup point and the oil film thickness were critical, which could be controlled by surface wettability and oil volume. We have also realized a new oil filling method with controllable dosing volume assisted by the microfluidic creation of microdroplets. This study could help quantitatively understand electrowetting display performance in both its theoretical and practical aspects.

Abstract:Digital microfluidics provides precise control of a single microdroplet, producing more opportunities for bio-molecule studies, chemical reaction and optofluidics applications. By manipulating the surface of droplets, light can be focused, scattered, or reflected toward different positions. We build a model of electro-responsive optical microfluidic system, operated based on the electrowetting mechanism, which can split or push droplets moving within a microwell. The initial close state and operated open state in a single microwell displays the color of a dye oil droplet and the substrate, respectively, represented as the dark and bright pixel in the display board. Our results indicate that the microdroplets interface could be successfully deformed and moved towards different directions within a short period of time.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the design, driving and electro-optical behavior of an electrofluidic, or electrowetting, display panel. Electrofluidic displays involve the movement of a colored oil water interface as a result of polarizing the interface between water and a hydrophobic surface under the influence of external electric field. The proposed direct-segment drive approach successfully drives the display panel based on electrofluidic. The electro-optical behavior of electrofluidic display samples are measured and analyzed. The ton and toff of the pixel is 16 ms and 8 ms, respectively, which demonstrates that electrofluidic display panels have the capability to show video content.

Abstract:Focused on the display represented by electrowetting display pixel unit of complex confined oil-water electrowetting system, and combined the simulation and experiments, two-phase electricfluid dynamic characteris- tics of the microflow system were studied. Based on phase field and electrostatic field for two-phase flow offered by COMSOL, a two-dimensional dynamic simulation model including important parameters, such as, the oil-water viscosity, surface tension, wettability was built up and photoelectric characteristics of the microflow system was in- vestigated. The results show that the dynamic characteristics of the electricfluid in the pixel cell can be simulated successfully by the coupling method of two-phase flow field and electrostatic field. The dynamic viscosity of conduc- ting liquid is positively related to the oil film optical response time, but eventually has litde effect on the white area of pixel; the oil-water surface tension value is positively related with the oil film rupture time and led the movement speed of the oil-water interface. The model makes great significance to understand and predict the dynamic perform- ance of the confined electrowetting system and accelerate the development process.

Abstract:Electrowetting refers to the phenomenon of modifying the surface tension between a liquid and a solid by adjusting the externally applied electric potential between the liquid and solid electrodes, thereby changing the contact angle between the two and causing a deformation and displacement of the droplets. Electrowetting electronic paper display is a new reflective “paper-like” display technology based on a rapid response microfluidic control technology. It has the advantages of low energy consumption, visual health, and flexibility of commercial electrophoretic electronic paper display products, while breaking through the bottlenecks of “full-color” and “video-speed response” that currently restrict the application of electronic paper display technology. In this paper, several physical directions involved in electrowetting display devices, especially wetting and electrowetting, binary phase fluid mechanics, microscopic and interfacial physics, photophysics, dielectric physics, thermophysics, and transient physics, are systematically reviewed; the basic principles of device operation, microscopic and mesoscopic physical pictures, internal mechanisms of device operation, and device reliability are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Electrowetting has drawn significant interest because of the potential applications of displays, lab-on-a-chip microfluidic devices, electro-optical switches, and so forth. However, electrowetting display (EWD) is monostable, which needs extra continuous voltage supply to keep contracting the oil. This paper is concerned with the simulation of two-phase liquid flow in three-dimensional EWD pixels with two electrodes (E1 and E2) demonstrating bistability, where power is only needed to move the oil droplet between two stable states. The effects of E1 geometry, E2 geometry, and E2 pulse characteristics on the dynamics of the oil droplet motion have been analyzed. Also, predictions of the transient states in four stages of the reversible bistable operation process have been carried out by employing the finite element method, in qualitative agreement with our experimental results of the monostable EWD and the existing literature. We seek to shed more light on the fundamental two-phase liquid flow in three-dimensional pixels exhibiting bistability for low power EWD and guide optimizing the electrodes to the perfect patterns with the aid of rigorous modeling.

Abstract:Displays can present information like text, images, or videos in a different color (visible light) by activating the materials in pixels. In a display device, pixels are typically of micrometer size and filled with displaying materials that are aligned and controlled by a display driver integrated circuit. Typical reflective displays can show designed information by manipulating ambient light via the microfluidic behavior in pixels driven by electrophoresis, electrowetting, or electromechanical forces. In this review, we describe the basic working principles and device structures of three reflective displays of electrophoresis display (EPD), electrowetting display (EWD), and interferometric modulator display (IMOD). The optofluidic behavior and controlling factors relating to the display performance are summarized.

Abstract:Droplet manipulation is a critical step for microfluidic applications. We present digital microfluidic devices based on electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) for reliable and repeatable droplet manipulation. The EWOD device consists of two flexible conducive films as top and bottom electrodes, and one flexible liquid-infused membrane (LIM) as the hydrophobic insulating layer. LIMs made by infusing various fluids (air, fluorocarbon, silicone and hydrocarbon oils) into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes are evaluated by electrowetting performance of a sessile water droplet. Silicone oil is selected as the filling insulating oil according to its excellent electrowetting performance in good reversibility, low contact angle hysteresis, and negligible volatility. Fast (85 mm.s(-1)), repeatable ( > 5000 times without obvious decay) and continuous droplet (designed routes) moving, merging, mixing and positioning have been demonstrated. The factors affecting droplet transport velocity are investigated, including the infused oil viscosity, the conducive volume and the top-to-bottom gap distance. Both the conducive film and LIM are replaceable and robust, showing reliable and long-term stability. Quantitative chromogenic reactions and a flexible EWOD device are demonstrated. These devices are easy-to-fabricate, replaceable-in-material and robust-in-performance, showing high potential for applications in sample preparation, and flexible sensing and display devices.
Effect of Liquid Conductivity on Optical and Electric Performances of the Electrowetting Display System with a Thick Dielectric Layer

Abstract:The effect of liquid conductivity on both the optical and electric performances of the electrowetting display system with a thick fluoropolymer insulating layer was investigated in this study. Low-conductivity deionized water and aqueous ionic solutions with different conductivities were used as the conducting liquids and tested in both the open electrowetting systems and the electrowetting display devices. The sessile droplet test was used to study the electrowetting performance of liquid droplets with different conductivities on fluoropolymer coated electrode and an experimental platform was designed to measure the leakage current of the liquid/fluoropolymer/electrode contact. 2.7-inch EWD specimens were also prepared for the experiments. The on-switching response time, the maximum aperture ratio of pixels and the current-voltage characteristic on device level were studied experimentally. We focused on the influence of liquid conductivity on the optical performance of the electrowetting displays. The test showed that, with deionized water, the leakage current value of the EWD cell was lower than 10 nA/cm2 at 30 V, while the average on-switching time and maximum aperture ratio water were 37.8 ms and 46.7%, respectively. The using of low-conductivity water as conducting liquid in electrowetting displays with a thick fluoropolymer insulating layer was discussed.

Abstract:Electrowetting has shown its power in manipulating microfluidics. Of particular interest is a bistable electrowetting system, which enables versatile low power consumption applications. A combined design of electrode and wettability patterning, which includes a unique three-electrode structure and wettability barrier, was proposed and introduced into as a new electrofluidic display (EFD) architecture. This architecture should be manufacturable in a fairly straightforward way within LCD cell-making technology. For this architecture, an electrohydrodynamic two phase flow simulation was carried out using the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software. The results show that this new EFD architecture could achieve a bistable display property. Compared with conventional EFD, the electro-optical performance (the aspect ratio and response time) of this design has also been greatly improved.

Abstract:Electrofulidic displays is a reflective display technology based on the principle of electrowetting for high‐speed operation of liquid interface. For this, precise control of the relative motion of the two‐phase fluid is very important for optical performance. However, due to the instability of the liquid‐liquid interface under an electric field, it is very difficult to accurately control the relative dynamics of the two‐phase fluid through electrowetting. Therefore, how to realize the stable and controllable dynamics of the oil‐water interface is an interesting challenge. At present, there have been many researches aimed at this problem in terms of device structure [1], electrode design [2], driving waveform [3], etc.However, due to the characteristics of the material or the limitation of the structure manufacturing process, these methods still cannot form a stable control of the movement of the oil‐water interface. In this paper, through the flexible programmable inkjet printing process, conductive micropiller (CMP) are implanted in the pixel structure to induce local distortion electric fields to further precisely control the movement of the oil‐water two‐phase interface.

Abstract:Electrowetting displays (EWD) is a novel technology, based on the variation in coverage of a colored oil film in pixels via application of an electrostatic force. These pixels are usually fabricated by photolithography, which seriously limits materials selection and large area fabrication. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of a novel method, nanoimprint lithography (NIL), to fabricate EWD pixels. Controllable contraction and recovery of oil film in single EWD pixels was realized. Compared with conventional lithography, NIL provides a cost-and time-saving technique that generates comparable display properties and is able to be easily extended to the mass production.

Abstract:Due to its simple structure, low consumption of energy but strong driving forces, Electrowetting on Dielectric (EWOD) is used most frequently in digital microfluidics for manipulation and control of droplets. In this paper, the internal mechanism of EWOD is explained though establishing the geometric model of unipolar board structure digital microfluidic chip. The digital simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics is applied to analyze the coupling fields. The results show that external flow velocity of micro-droplet is greater than the internal velocity. Based on the theoretic analysis, surface micromachining technologies are employed to fabricate the single-plate EWOD chip. Finally, an experiment platform is set up to test this chip. Experimental results show that 2μL droplet can be driven in velocity of 10cm/s and two droplets can be merged successfully. It will possibly provide an effective solution to the manipulation of droplets.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a driving waveform with a complex ramp pulse for an electrowetting display system. The relationship between the contact angle and viscosity of inks was calculated based on the fluid-motion characteristics of different viscosities. We obtained the suitable range of viscosity and voltage in the liquid–oil–solid three-phase contact display system. We carried out model simulation and driving waveform design. The result shows that the driving waveform improves the response speed and aperture ratio of electrowetting. The aperture ratio of electrowetting pixels is increased to 68.69%. This research is of great significance to optimizing the structure of fluid material and the design of driving waveforms in electrowetting displays.

Abstract:Electrowetting display(EWD)was fabricated by using cytop,which,as the hydrophobic dielectric layer,features good optical properties.Plasma treatment was used to solve the contradictory between superhydrophobic of Cytop surface and lithography process.Controllable contraction and recovery of single EWD pixle was realized.Furthermore,5cm×5cm single corlour reflective and transmissive EWD arrays have been fabricated successfully,which show nice performance.Thus,agood foundation is laid for the fabrication of practical electrowetting display device.

Abstract:In this study, we numerically investigate the mixing of two sessile micro-droplets in open electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidics. The mixing process is composed of the merging and the subsequent oscillation process achieved by applying alternating voltage (AC voltage) to the droplet with desired frequency and amplitude. The numerical results show excellent agreement with previous numerical and experimental studies. The focus of this study is probing into the effects of the merging process on the subsequent AC voltage-actuated oscillation of the droplet. It is observed that the merging process breaks the azimuthal symmetry of the droplet and, hence, introduces the sectoral mode to the subsequent AC voltage-actuated oscillation. The frequency dependence of the enhancement and dissipation of the sectoral oscillation is quantitatively investigated. Furthermore, the sectoral oscillation inherited from the merging process is confirmed to have little impact on the zonal oscillation of the droplet. The oscillation-based mixing enhancement of the droplet is numerically verified.

Abstract:Digital microfluidics technology based on the electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) effect is a popular emerging technology whose objects of manipulation are individual droplets on the micro-liter or even nano-liter scales. It has the unique advantages such as rapid reaction, low reagent consumption, and high integration, which have drawn extensive attention and application in the fields of biology, medicine, and chemistry. However, there has been no a complete mechanism by which the droplets transition from stillness to motion in EWOD chip, leaving the proper mechanism for droplet movement uncertain. At this point in time, we studied the EWOD theory and polarization mechanism underlying solid-liquid interface, thus building upon previous research. The theoretical derivation and numerical analyses of EWOD driving force were presented. Then, the process and mechanism of droplet movement from stillness to motion was comprehensively analyzed, the results obtained from the simulation and discussion were in agreement with experimental results. It is our hope that this work will inspire new research into less understood EWOD regimes and help design useful EWOD devices.

Abstract:In recent years, reflective display devices based on electrowetting have attracted increasing interest in flat-plate display community. By controlling a colored oil film electrically, display elements of high response speed and stable intermediate optical states could be obtained. We have developed an electrowetting based display element array prototype. In this paper, we describe its working principle, fabrication process, primary testing results, and the electro-optic behavior of the device is discussed based on a model calculation.

Abstract:Digital microfluidics technology based on the electrowetting-on-dielectric effect is a popular emerging technology whose objects of control are individual droplets on the microliter or even nano-liter scales. It has unique advantages such as rapid response, low reagent consumption, and high integration, so it has drawn widespread attention and use in the biological, medical, and chemical fields. However, to date, there has been relatively little research conducted on the mechanism of droplets transition from stillness to motion by electrowetting-on-dielectric actuation. Here, we studied the polarization mechanism underlying solid–liquid contact surface, thus building upon the previous research. The electric field in chip, internal pressure, and flow field of droplet were modeled and simulated numerically. Then, the process and mechanism of droplet transition from stillness to motion was comprehensively analyzed, and the results obtained from the simulation and discussion were in close agreement with experimental results. It is here shown that the process of droplet from stillness to motion involves four successive steps, which helps to better understand electrowetting-on-dielectric-induced droplet motions and physics of digital microfluidics systems. The aim of this work was to research basic physical mechanisms of electrowetting-on-dielectric droplet motion on a common ground so that the researchers may form a clear picture of the fundamentals.
