Abstract:A frequency-domain finite element method (FEM) with the low-storage matrix-free feature is proposed for efficient analysis of electromagnetic fields. As opposed to conventional frequency-domain FEM which requires the matrix assembly before solving, the proposed matrix-free algorithm avoids the assembly and storage of the global matrix. In this approach, the global sparse matrix-vector (SpMV) multiplication is decomposed into element-wise matrix-vector (MV) multiplications. Additionally, the sum factorization technique is applied on tensorial basis functions to reduce the complexities of local MV multiplications. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm over traditional FEM in terms of both memory and time consumption. Besides, the improvement is more profound when higher-order basis functions are considered. A speedup of more than 10 against matrix-assembled solvers is observed. Given that memory transfer is bounded more than computation resources in modern supercomputer architectures, our algorithm is more friendly to high-performance computing platforms.

Abstract:A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent states.

Abstract:A novel high‐order time‐domain scheme with a four‐stage optimized symplectic integrator propagator is presented for 3D electromagnetic scattering problems. The scheme is nondissipative and does not require more storage than the classical finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) method. Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:The book chapter will aim at introducing the background knowledge, basic theories, supporting techniques, numerical results, and future research for the high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme. The theories of symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian are reviewed in Section 2 followed by the symplectiness of Maxwell's equations presented in Section 3. Next, the numerical stability and dispersion analyses are given in Section 4. Then, in Section 5, we will make a tour of the supporting techniques but do not discuss them in detail. These techniques involve source excitation, perfectly matched layer, near-to-far-field transformation, inhomogeneous boundary treatments, and parameter extractions. The numerical results on propagation, scattering, and guided-wave problems are shown in Section 6. The high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme demonstrates the powerful advantages and potentials for the time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations, especially for electrically-large objects and for long-term simulation. Finally, the conclusion and future research are summarized in Section 7.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new direct approach to solving Maxwell's equations in time domain. Completely different from the classic one, this approach is derived and analysed based on a strategy which is independent of the well-known Fourier (or Laplace) transformation and the corresponding inverse transformation. The analysis first decouples Maxwell's equations on the basis of a potential theory and then uses an operator-variation-of-constants formula (the Duhamel Principle) to achieve the expression of exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. We further illustrate the simplicity and multi-purpose applicability of the new approach in linear, homogeneous, isotropic and lossless (bounded or unbounded and source-free or source) medium (in rectangular, cylindrical or spherical coordinates). Moreover, we make a study on impulse electromagnetics. With this new approach, this paper bridges the gap between the time domain electromagnetics and the frequency domain electromagnetics.

Abstract:An efficient three-dimensional solver for the solution of the electromagnetic fields in both time and frequency domains is described. The proposed method employs the edge-based finite-element method (FEM) to discretize Maxwell's equations. The resultant matrix equation after applying the mass-lumping procedure is solved by the spectral Lanczos decomposition method (SLDM), which is based on the Krylov subspace (Lanczos) approximation of the solution. This technique is, therefore, an implicit unconditionally stable finite-element time and frequency-domain scheme, which requires the implementation of the Lanczos process only at the largest time or frequency of interest. Consequently, a multiple time- and frequency-domain analysis of the electromagnetic fields is achieved in a negligible amount of extra computing time. The efficiency and effectiveness of this new technique are illustrated by using numerical examples of three-dimensional cavity resonators.

Abstract:An efficient finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm is built to solve the transverse electric 2D Maxwell's equations with inhomogeneous dielectric media where the electric fields are discontinuous across the dielectric interface. The new algorithm is derived based upon the integral version of the Maxwell's equations as well as the relationship between the electric fields across the interface. It is an improvement over the contour-path effective-permittivity algorithm by including some extra terms in the formulas. The scheme is validated in solving the scattering of a dielectric cylinder with exact solution from Mie theory and is then compared with the above contour-path method, the usual staircase and the volume-average method. The numerical results demonstrate that the new algorithm has achieved significant improvement in accuracy over the other methods. Furthermore, the algorithm has a simple structure and can be merged into any existing FDTD software package very easily.

Abstract:A hybrid numerical technique for solving coupled Schrödinger and Maxwell's equations for the simulation of nano-devices is presented. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is applied to Schrödinger's equation, while the locally one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (LOD-FDTD) method is applied to Maxwell's equations for efficient simulation of the coupled equations. Results of the proposed approach are compared to those obtained via the conventional FDTD method.

Abstract:We develop a finite volume method for Maxwell's equations in materials whose electromagnetic properties vary in space and time. We investigate both conservative and non-conservative numerical formulations. High-order methods accurately resolve fine structures that develop due to the varying material properties. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in handling temporal variation and its efficiency relative to traditional 2nd-order FDTD.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations in the time domain are first cast into a conservation form. They are then solved using a finite-volume discretization procedure proven very successful in solving some hyperbolic partial differential equations in computational fluid dynamics such as Euler or Navier-Stokes equations. The Lax-Wendroff explicit scheme is used to solve the discrete Maxwell's equations and as a result, second-order accuracy is achieved in both time and space. Multizoning is used to facilitate treatment of objects with internal and/or external sophistication. Body-fitted coordinates are used to map each zone independently from the rest of the object, allowing for nonmatching grid lines at the interface. Body-fitted coordinates facilitate accurate implementation of various boundary conditions on the object. The density of the computational mesh can vary and may be specified according to the local wavelength in the material. Also in the exterior region and away from the body, the mesh density is gradually decreased to reduce the total number of the grid points and the unknown field vectors. The formulation accounts for any variations in the material properties as a function of space, time, or frequency. In addition to perfect conductors, impedence surfaces and resistive sheets are handled. At the outer boundary of the computational domain a first-order, nonreflecting outer boundary condition is used. The Lax-Wendroff scheme, while providing second-order accuracy in the time and space, does not require, for its stability, an interlaced mesh for the electric and magnetic fields or the material properties. The method can be used for both time-harmonic and pulse excitations. At the end of the time-marching, the computed field in the time domain near the object and tangential to a conveniently chosen contour is stored. This information is converted into the frequency domain using fast Fourier transforms. If far field quantities such as radar cross-section or antenna radiation pattern are desired, they may be computed from the frequency-domain information using a standard free-space Green's function.

Abstract:We consider the numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations in time domain by a second order $H(curl)$ conforming finite element approximation. In order to enable the efficient application of explicit time stepping schemes, we utilize a mass-lumping strategy resulting from numerical integration in conjunction with the finite element spaces introduced by Elmkies and Joly. We prove that this method is second order accurate if the true solution is divergence free, but the order of accuracy reduces to one in the general case. We then propose a modification of the finite element space, which yields second order accuracy in the general case.

Abstract:Optimized operator splitting methods for numerical integration of the time domain Maxwell’s equations in computational electromagnetics (CEM) are proposed for the first time. The methods are based on splitting the time domain evolution operator of Maxwell’s equations into suboperators, and corresponding time coefficients are obtained by reducing the norm of truncation terms to a minimum. The general high-order staggered finite difference is introduced for discretizing the three-dimensional curl operator in the spatial domain. The detail of the schemes and explicit iterated formulas are also included. Furthermore, new high-order Padé approximations are adopted to improve the efficiency of the proposed methods. Theoretical proof of the stability is also included. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the schemes. It is found that the optimized schemes with coarse discretized grid and large Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) number can obtain satisfactory numerical results, which in turn proves to be a promising method, with advantages of high accuracy, low computational resources and facility of large domain and long-time simulation. In addition, due to the generality, our optimized schemes can be extended to other science and engineering areas directly.

Abstract:We discuss the approximation of the eigensolutions associated with the Maxwell eigenvalues problem in the framework of least-squares finite elements. We write the Maxwell curl curl equation as a system of two first order equation and design a novel least-squares formulation whose minimum is attained at the solution of the system. The eigensolution are then approximated by considering the eigenmodes of the underlying solution operator. We study the convergence of the finite element approximation and we show several numerical tests confirming the good behavior of the method. It turns out that nodal elements can be successfully employed for the approximation of our problem also in presence of singular solutions.

Energy Conserving Higher Order Mixed Finite Element Discretizations of Maxwell's Equations

Abstract:We study a system of Maxwell's equations that describes the time evolution of electromagnetic fields with an additional electric scalar variable to make the system amenable to a mixed finite element spatial discretization. We demonstrate stability and energy conservation for the variational formulation of this Maxwell's system. We then discuss two implicit, energy conserving schemes for its temporal discretization: the classical Crank-Nicholson scheme and an implicit leapfrog scheme. We next show discrete stability and discrete energy conservation for the semi-discretization using these two time integration methods. We complete our discussion by showing that the error for the full discretization of the Maxwell's system with each of the two implicit time discretization schemes and with spatial discretization through a conforming sequence of de Rham finite element spaces converges quadratically in the step size of the time discretization and as an appropriate polynomial power of the mesh parameter in accordance with the choice of approximating polynomial spaces. Our results for the Crank-Nicholson method are generally well known but have not been demonstrated for this Maxwell's system. Our implicit leapfrog scheme is a new method to the best of our knowledge and we provide a complete error analysis for it. Finally, we show computational results to validate our theoretical claims using linear and quadratic Whitney forms for the finite element discretization for some model problems in two and three spatial dimensions.

Abstract:We review Maxwell's equations and constitutive relations for 3D bianisotropic media in a generalized form: we consider all four variables and allow for nonzero polarization or magnetization, and also nonzero nonzero magnetic charge or current. After a discussion of general boundary conditions, we introduce a time-harmonic variational formulation of linear Maxwell's equations within 3D bianisotropic media in terms of the electric and magnetic fields. We showcase a finite element approximation of our variational formulation, using curl-conforming Nédélec edge elements of the first kind. Numerical examples illustrate the convergence of the method.

Abstract:In order to get numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations which plays an important role in the electric-magnetic fields, a new anisotropic nonconforming mixed finite element method is presented. Based on special construction of the element pair and some novel techniques, error estimates of electric and magnetic fields in L2 norm are obtained under anisotropic meshes. The convergence results demonstrate the validity of the anisotropic nonconforming mixed element method for solving Maxwell’s equations.
