Abstract:The Nd/Er co-doped tetragonal BiVO4 photocatalysts are synthesized by a microwave hydrothermal method, and the crystal structures, morphologies and optical properties are characterized. The substitution of Nd3+ and Er3+ for Bi3+ sites leads to distortion of the [VO4] tetrahedron chains and induces the monoclinic structure transforming into the tetragonal structure, with the morphology evolving from nano particle agglomerations to disorganized regular rods agglomerations. The impurity energy levels induced by Nd3+ and Era' in the energy band of BiVO4 act as electron traps and have further energy transfer in the up-conversion processes to facilitate the photocarriers' separation. The more positive VB positions in the co-doped BiVO4 band structures can also effectively enhance oxidation capacity. Based on the above synergetic effect, the degradation rate the degradation rate of co-doped tetragonal BiVO4 photocatalyst can reach the highest 96% within 150 min under simulated sunlight and 20 min under the NIR irradiation. Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.

Abstract:Er3+-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (Er-doped NBT) ceramics were prepared via a hydrothermal method. High sintering active Er-doped NBT nano cubic particles with perovskite structure were synthesized at hydrothermal condition of 200 °C for 24 h in 12 M NaOH solution, which were self-assembled via in situ crystallization mechanism by the initially as-grown nanowires. The Er-doped NBT ceramics sintered at 1100 °C for 2 h exhibit pure rhombohedral perovskite structure, high densification and rather homogenous microstructure morphology. Under 488 nm light excitation, the strong green emission peaks centering at 530 nm and 550 nm and the weak red emission peaks locating at 665 nm and 735 nm are excited, which can be attributed to the 2H11/2, 4S3/2, 4F9/2 and 4I9/2 → 4I15/2 transitions, respectively. The maximum emission intensity is obtained when the Er doping content reaches 1.0 mol%. A strong upconversion emission peak centering around 550 nm in green light range is excited under 800 nm light excitation, which is correlated with the 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transition.

Abstract:In this progress report, seven kinds of novel carefully designed and fabricated up-conversion luminescence agents, Er3+:Y3Al5O12, Er3+:YbnY3−nAl5O12, Er3+:Y3BaAl5−aO12, Er3+:Y3GabAl5−bO12, Er3+:Y3Al5NxO12−x, Er3+:Y3Al5FyO12−y and Er3+:YbnY3−nBaGabAl5−a−bNxFyO12−x−y, are successfully synthesized using sol–gel methods. After that, their corresponding photocatalysts, Er3+:Y3Al5O12/TiO2, Er3+:YbnY3−nAl5O12/TiO2, Er3+:Y3BaAl5−aO12/TiO2, Er3+:Y3GabAl5−bO12/TiO2, Er3+:Y3Al5NxO12−x/TiO2, Er3+:Y3Al5FyO12−y/TiO2 and Er3+:YbnY3−nBaGabAl5−a−bNxFyO12−x−y/TiO2, are also prepared by sol–gel coating process. The obtained up-conversion luminescence agents and photocatalysts were characterized by using XRD, XPS, SEM, UV–vis and fluorescence spectrophotometer. Synchronously, several kinds of organic dyes are used to test their photocatalytic degradation using prepared photocatalysts. It indicates that the up-conversion luminescence ability of Er3+:Y3Al5O12 can be improved obviously through doping of some elements. And then, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 is markedly enhanced by modified up-conversion luminescence agents which can transform much visible light into ultraviolet light.

Abstract:Bi2WO6: Er3+ with hierarchical flower-like microstructures were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The photocatalysts thus obtained were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Results obtained by XPS confirmed the presence of Er3+ dopants in Bi2WO6. Moreover, the results obtained from SEM have shown that doping with Er ions results in hierarchical flower-like microstructures of Bi2WO6. Under visible light irradiation, with an appropriate doping content, the photocatalysts exhibit significant improvement in the photocatalytic activity as the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs is enhanced. Notably, the photocatalytic activity of 1.5% Bi2WO6: Er3+ is 3.69 times that of undoped Bi2WO6. The results indicate that an appropriate doping content can improve photocatalytic activity, caused by wider band gap, hierarchical flower-like microstructures, and defects generated by doping with Er3+, which in turn increase the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
The Up-Conversion Effect Induced NIR-photocatalytic Performance of Bi2−XErXWO6 Photocatalysts

Abstract:Bi2-XErXWO6 photocatalysts were synthesized by a microwave solvothermal-calcination method. The Er3+ ions were doped into the crystal of Bi2WO6 and the photocatalysts show an up-conversion effect of the Er3+ 4f electrons: I-4(15/2) -> F-4(7/2), I-4(15/2) -> H-2(11/2), I-4(15/2) -> S-4(3/2) and I-4(15/2) -> F-4(9/2). The Er3+ ions absorb NIR light and convert it into visible light so that extra photons and electrons-holes are generated. The degradation rates of the Bi2-XErXWO6 photocatalyst reach 96% within 270 min and 95% within 30 min under the simulated sunlight and NIR light, which confirms the enhancement of the degradation performance by the up-conversion effect. Abstract:A novel Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst with 3D flowerlike hierarchical architectures were successfully fabricated through self-assembled process without any templates under hydrothermal conditions, and the structure and properties of the photocatalysts were characterized. The results indicate that Yb3+ ions and Er3+ ions are successfully doped into the lattice of BiOBr, and the as-obtained photocatalyst can respond the NIR light and emit red and green light due to the up-conversion effect of the rare-earth ions. Meanwhile, with co-doped Yb3+/Er3+ ions content increasing, oxygen vacancy concentration in the photocatalyst rises. The oxygen vacancy will form the intermediate energy band, which can decrease the photon energy required for electronical transition, and thus help to utilize the luminous energy generated by up-conversion luminescence. Moreover, the appropriate introduction of defects (oxygen vacancy defect and impurity atom) can further promote the transfer and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Hence, Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst exhibits enhanced photocatalytic properties under broad spectrum (UV/Vis/NIR) excitation, which is about 4 times as high as that of pure BiOBr.

Abstract:Upconversion photocatalysts have the potential to absorb the near-infrared (NIR) light in solar energy and improve the photocatalytic performance. A hierarchical upconversion photocatalyst of BiVO4 (BVO)/CaF2:Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+ (CF) combined with the narrow-band semiconductor of BVO and the luminescence agent of CF to enhance upconversion properties was synthesized via the hydrothermal method. The CF particles were deposited homogeneously on the surface of the BVO/CF composite with regular dendritic structure, which led to efficient upconversion emissions. The upconversion emission intensity of the BVO/CF composite was 8 times higher than that of pure CF, through tailoring the crystal symmetry of lanthanide ions by Bi3+ ions. The upconverted ultraviolet (361 and 379 nm), violet (408 nm), and blue (485 nm) light was able to excite BVO for photocatalysis in BVO/CF under NIR irradiation, which improved the degradation rate of methyl orange (MO).

Abstract:As upconversion agents, Er3+, Yb3+ were doped into Bi5O7I photocatalyst to improve its photocatalytic activity. Rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol were selected as model pollutants to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Bi5O7I under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) and simulated solar light irradiation (λ > 290 nm), respectively. It was found that the photocatalytic activity of the Er3+:Yb3+ doped Bi5O7I was much higher than that of pure Bi5O7I and corresponding mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.

Abstract:Er3+ doped intergrowth Bi4Ti3O12–SrBi4Ti4O15 (BIT–SBTi: xEr3+) ceramics have been synthesized by a solid state processing. Upconversion (UC) luminescence and ferroelectric (FE) polarization properties were first investigated. Bright UC green emission, originating from (2H11/2,4S3/2)–4I15/2 transitions, was confirmed to be a two-photon energy transfer process by pumping laser power dependence of emission intensity. The UC green luminescence can be seen by the naked eye at room temperature. Furthermore, it is found that a proper Er3+ doping can also remarkably enhance the FE polarization of BIT–SBTi: xEr3+. The results indicated that BIT–SBTi: xEr3+ with good UC emission and high FE polarization can act as a potentially multifunctional optical-electro-material.

Abstract:Er3+/Yb3+-codoped transparent oxyfluoride borosilicate glass ceramics containing Ba2GdF7 nanocrystals were prepared and spectroscopic properties of rare earth ions were investigated. Fluoride nanocrystals Ba2GdF7 were successfully precipitated in glass matrix, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. In comparison with the as-made precursor, significant enhancement of upconversion luminescence was observed in the Er3+/Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramics, which may be due to the variation of coordination environment around Er3+ and Yb3+ ions after crystallization. The transition mechanisms of the green and red upconversion luminescence were ascribed to a two-photon process, and that of the blue upconversion luminescence was a three-photon process.
Enhancing Upconversion Emissions of Er 3+ /tm 3+ /yb 3+ Tridoped (nay(wo 4 ) 2 /YF 3 ) Through TiO 2 Coating and Bi 3+ Doping and Its Photocatalytic Applications

Abstract:Enhanced upconversion property is important for the improvement of photocatalytic activity in the TiO2 based near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysts. Herein, an excellent NIR photocatalyst of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+/Bi3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2/YF3) (ETYB-NTY) was synthesized with a multi-stage upconversion nanocrystal formation process. It is found that TiO2 coatings not only provide photocatalytic activity, but also improve the upconversion emission intensity, which is further enhanced greatly by the doped Bi3+ ions. Under NIR irradiations, ETYB-NTY possesses better photocatalytic activities compared to Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2/YF3) and Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ doped (NaY(WO4)(2)/TiO2), since more (OH)-O-center dot and O-2(center dot-) radicals can be produced by the much stronger UV (364 and 380 nm) and violet (409 nm) upconversion emissions in ETYB-NTY. There are also clear improvements for ETYB-NTY in degradation of methyl orange, salicylic acid, and the leachate from incineration plant under UV-vis-NIR irradiation. ETYB-NTY is a novel NIR photo catalyst with special structure and enhanced upconversion property, which has promising applications in organic pollution treatment and solar energy utilization. Abstract:Er3+-doped Bi4Ti3O12 (BiT-x) with different particle sizes were successfully synthesized via a low-cost coprecipitation method without any surfactants. The phase and structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and analyzed using Rietveld structural refinements. The morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). We show that synthesis temperature plays an important role to determine the phase and particle size of BiT-x. As a function of excitation power, it is proved that the obtained BiT-x samples display size-dependent up-conversion (UC) luminescence properties. Meanwhile, with x increase, manipulation of UC emission is observed which can be illustrated by the increased CR process probability. The critical energy transfer distance (R-c) and the major interaction mechanism among Er3+ ions are also determined. Furthermore, the temperature sensing behavior based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique from the thermally coupled H-2(11/2) and S-4(3/2) levels are studied in the temperature range from 115 K to 490 K. It is found that the maximum sensing sensitivity is 0.0043 K-1. Meanwhile, BiT-0.05 nanoparticles also display good water-resistance feature. These results reveal that BiT-x oxides may have promising applications in future optical temperature sensors.

Abstract:Doping of rare earth elements into Bi Ti O can significantly enhance the upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) properties, but its structure-property relationship is still unclear. In this work, Er-doped bismuth titanate Bi Er Ti O ( =0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) ceramics were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the orthorhombic crystalline structure of the Bi Er Ti O ceramics without any secondary phases. Experiments and calculations of positron annihilation spectroscopy were carried out to characterize their defect structure. The comparison between the experimental and calculated lifetime revealed that vacancy clusters were the main defects in the ceramics. The increase of the intensity of the second positron lifetime component (I ) of Bi Er Ti O ceramics indicated the presence of a high concentration of vacancy clusters. The UCPL spectra shown the sudden enhanced UCPL performance in Bi Er Ti O and Bi Er Ti O ceramics, which were consistent with the variation of the second positron lifetime component (I ). These results indicate that the enhanced UCPL properties are influenced not only by the concentrations of rare earth ions but also by the concentration of vacancy clusters present within the ceramics.

Abstract:A CTAB-assisted microwave hydrothermal method was used to synthesize BiVO4 photocatalysts with different shapes. The obtained products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results showed that the monoclinic phase BiVO4 polyhedron was formed via a tetragonal zircon-type BiVO4 precursor. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra showed a great shift to longer wavelengths in the visible region for the monoclinic phase BiVO4 samples compared to the BiVO4 precursor. The photocatalytic activity of the sample was investigated for the liquid phase photocatalytic degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation (lambda>420nm). The effects of different reaction times on the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 had also been investigated, and the highest efficiency was observed when the sample was prepared at 140 degrees C for 30min.

The increase of the intensity of the second positron lifetime component (I$_{2}$) of Bi$_{3.5}$Er$_{0.5}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ ceramics indicated the presence of a high concentration of vacancy clusters. The UCPL spectra shown the sudden enhanced UCPL performance in Bi$_{3.7}$Er$_{0.3}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ and Bi$_{3.5}$Er$_{0.5}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ ceramics, which were consistent with the variation of the second positron lifetime component (I$_{2}$). These results indicate that the enhanced UCPL properties are influenced not only by the concentrations of rare earth ions but also by the concentration of vacancy clusters present within the ceramics.

Abstract:The pursuit of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts through structural modifications has been a focal point of investigation within the realm of related scientific disciplines. In this study, we successfully designed Er -doped Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 -BaTiO 3 combined with rare earth ion doping and solid solution modification, and the prepared particles exhibited homogeneous grain sizes and optimized concentrations of oxygen vacancies (O V ). The synergistic incorporation of O V (accelerator for catalytic reaction) and Er 3 + results in an impressive 12 -fold enhancement of the piezo-photocatalytic rate when degrading the Rhodamine B dye. The optimal composition 0.96BNT-0.04BT-Er demonstrates outstanding electrochemical properties, including a superior photocurrent response and minimal impedance, highlighting its exceptional performance in piezo-photocatalysis. The fundamental enhancement in catalytic performance can be attributed to the reconfiguration of the band structure of 0.96BNT-0.04BT-Er, which has been meticulously calculated utilizing DRS and VB-XPS and the internal mechanism was explained in detail. This research serves as a source of inspiration for the investigation of solid solutions among piezo-photocatalysts and sheds light on the vital role of band structure in governing catalytic performance.

Abstract:Er3+-doped up-conversion materials and TiO2 composite photocatalyst was prepared by the sol-gel method. The photocatalysis property of up-conversion phosphors sol and TiO2 sol composite, up-conversion phosphors and TiO2 nano powder composite, up-conversion phosphors sol cladding TiO2 nano powder and TiO2 sol cladding up-conversion phosphors were studied and the best composite method was developed. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, fluorescence spectrometer, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. The results show that the prepared composite photocatalyst in the visible light, 980 nm infrared can be converted to visible light of 541 and 661 nm. Composite photocatalyst also has a certain light catalytic performance under the exposing of the infrared light.
