Abstract:The breath figure method has emerged as a new self-assembly technique to fabricate ordered porous materials, which show potential applications in many fields, such as size-selective separation membranes. However, it is challenging to customize the structures, especially to precisely tune the pore size in a wide range. Moreover, the relationship between polymer structure and film morphologies is still unknown. In this paper, we report a facile, effective, and controllable way to manipulate the evolution of morphologies of honeycomb films, which is based on the blends of an amphiphilic block copolymer and polystyrenes with hydrophobic end groups. A series of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators with alkyl or fluorinated groups were synthesized for polystyrenes with hydrophobic end groups. Polymerization kinetics confirmed the viability of these ATRP initiators. Surface segregation behaviors of the hydrophobic end groups were demonstrated by measuring the surface chemical composition and surface free energies. We found that the polystyrenes with hydrophobic end groups form ordered films only at high polymer concentration (40–60 mg mL−1); moreover, the use of blends of two types of polystyrenes, one of which has a hydrophobic end group whereas the other has a hydrophilic block, can greatly increase the regularity of the honeycomb films and provide the possibility to fine-tune the pore diameter. Moreover, the evolution of surface morphologies of the films can be ideally correlated with the surface free energies of the end-functionalized polymers.
Self-Assembly of Patterned Porous Films from Cyclic Polystyrenes Via the Breath Figure Method

Abstract:The architecture of polymers plays a crucial role in self-assembly processes. However, the effect of end groups is still not understood thoroughly in many processes including the breath figure method, which is effective for preparing patterned porous films. Herein, we synthesized a series of well-defined cyclic polystyrenes by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and azide-alkyne click cyclization and investigated the self-assembly behaviors. The corresponding linear polymers were also compared. Results indicate that polar end groups dramatically improve the regularity of the self-assembled films. For cyclic polystyrenes without any end group, the ability to form patterned porous films is between two groups of linear samples. On the one hand, the results confirm the effect of polar end groups in the breath figure method. On the other hand, the impact of cyclic topology is also verified. This work reveals the nature of stabilization of templating droplets via the polymers by the measurement of the precipitation rate. It is the first time to introduce cyclic polymers to the breath figure process, and the results enlighten us on the molecular architecture design and provide insights into the self-assembly mechanism.
Polystyrenes with Hydrophilic End Groups: Synthesis, Characterization, and Effects on the Self-Assembly of Breath Figure Arrays

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of hydroxyl-end-functionalized polystyrenes (PS-OH) and the formation of patterned porous films. The polymers were synthesized by chain end reaction of polystyrene having a bromide end group (PS-Br) with hydramines including ethanolamine, diethanol amine, 2-amino-1,3-propanediol, and 2-(2-aminoethoxy) ethanol. The polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the end groups can influence the glass transition temperature (T-g) of the polystyrenes. The. polymers with different end groups were then used to prepare honeycomb-patterned porous films by the breath figure method. Results reveal that the subtle chain-end modification leads to a dramatic change in the morphology of the films. Honeycomb films with large area ordered structure can be easily prepared from PS-OH. Effects of the end groups as well as blending PS- OH with PS-Br on the surface pore diameter, pore center distance, and the hierarchical structure were studied in detail. As supported by the results of polymer hydrophilicity, in situ observation of the film formation process, as well as the chain mobility, the film structure is supposed to be mainly determined by the precipitation of polystyrene at the solution/water droplet interface and the interfacial activity enhanced by the end groups.

Abstract:Fluorinated polymers are emerging as important alternatives for isoporous film fabrication by the breath figure technique, originating from the special characteristics endowed by fluorine elements such as low surface energy and good chemical stability. In this work, we design and synthesize polystyrenes (~3600 Da) with perfluoroalkyl groups (–C3F7 or –C7F15) at both chain ends and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) units ((C2H4O)n, n = 1/2/3) in the chain middle by taking advantage of the bifunctional atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators and post substitution of the terminal bromine. We investigate the influence of the two disparate groups on the physical characteristics of the polymers and self-assembly behaviors during the dynamic breath figure process. It shows that the elongation of hydrophilic segments can greatly decrease the interfacial tension between the polymer solution and water (from 41.8 to 37.4 mN m-1), and the functionalization with perfluoroalkyl end groups diminishes the ability of the polymers to precipitate at the interface, as demonstrated by the cloud point results. Studies of the morphology of the porous films suggest that both low interfacial tension and strong capability of interfacial precipitation are beneficial to droplets stabilization and honeycomb pattern formation under low solution concentrations.

Directed Self-Assembly of Ternary Blends of Block Copolymer and Homopolymers on Chemical Patterns

Abstract:In this work ternary blends of symmetric lamellae-forming poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) block copolymer and polystyrene and PMMA homopolymers were prepared for the directed self-assembly (DSA) on chemically nanopatterned substrates using 2x density multiplication. Homopolymers with comparable molecular weights to that of the corresponding blocks in the block copolymer were used to adjust the periods of the blends. The periods of the blends increased from 38.5 to 50 nm as the volume fraction of homopolymers increased from 0 to 30%. The periods were analyzed by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, direct measurement from and fast Fourier transform of scanning electron microscopy images. DSA results indicate that the perfection and registration of the assembled films were mainly determined by the commensurability between the periods of the blends and the chemical patterns. Patterns with relatively small w/L-S (guiding stripe width/period of chemical pattern) led to mixed structures of dots and parallel structures. The process window of L-S where the block copolymer alignment shows a high degree of perfection was estimated at +/- 3.6% to +/- 4.6% L-o. (C) 2013 American Vacuum Society.

Abstract:The breath figure (BF) process has been widely used to prepare patterned porous films. The mechanism remains to be further elucidated, especially how polymer architectures affect the stability of water droplets and the pore structure. Polystyrenes (PS) was functionalized with a series of polar groups both in chain middle and chain end, which was synthesized by using difunctional atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators with the combination of nucleophilic substitution of the end bromine. It is found that PS with polar groups, which help to reduce interfacial tension, tends to form regular patterns at low concentration and to generate multilayered pores. The coalescence resistance measurement was performed to characterize the stabilization of water droplets from polymers by precipitation. The results show opposite trend with the results of the BF process, indicating a minor role played by polymer precipitation on microdroplets stabilization. We reveal that addition of only an oxyethyl group in the chain middle of PS contributes to the formation of ordered patterns. This study helps to shed light on the impact of polymer architectures on the self-assembly behavior in the BF process.
Systematic Investigation on the Formation of Honeycomb-Patterned Porous Films from Amphiphilic Block Copolymers

Abstract:The breath figure method is a very simple and highly efficient technique to prepare honeycomb-patterned porous structures. Amphiphilic block copolymers are the most used film-forming materials. However, the relationship between block copolymer composition and film morphology is still unknown, which hinders the large-scale fabrication of the films. In this work, we synthesized more than 30 amphiphilic block copolymers with different chemical compositions by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Honeycomb films were prepared from polystyrene-block-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethly methacrylate) (PS-b-PDMAEMA) by the breath figure method. An empirical morphology diagram was obtained to show the relationship between the block copolymer composition and the film-forming ability, in which zones corresponding to large-area ordered, ordered, partially ordered, and disordered films have been revealed. Moreover, interfacial tensions of these copolymers were measured by a pendant drop method. A polymerization degree ratio of PDMAEMA block to PS block between 0.01 and 0.02, which has interfacial tensions in the range of 34.546.0 mN/m, is favorable for the preparation of ordered honeycomb films. For polystyrene-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PHEMA) that has a more hydrophilic block than PS-b-PDMAEMA, it may form reverse micelles in solutions and hence shows different interfacial tensions and self-assembling behaviors when the PHEMA block is long. This study unveils the relationship between block copolymer composition and honeycomb film morphology and provides new insights into designing polymers for large-area, highly ordered, and reproducible honeycomb-patterned porous films.

Abstract:Honeycomb-structured microporous films were self-assembled from a new type of multiarm copolymer, hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol)-star-polystyrene (HBPO-star-PS). The precursor consisting of an HBPO core and a number of PS arms was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The microporous film was prepared by the evaporation of a chloroform solution of the precursor in a humid atmosphere (the so-called breath figure method). Compared to our former work, the hexagonally packed pores in the film were not interpenetrated and isolated from one another by the walls. The size of the pores could be controlled easily by changing the casting volume of the solution, the molecular weight and concentration of the polymer, and so forth. The water contact angle on the film surface indicated that the hydrophobicity of the film surface was significantly enhanced as a result of the formation of the porous structure.

Abstract:We demonstrate the facile synthesis of a new type of precision polymers containing periodically placed perfluoroalkyl segments and sulfonic acid groups via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of designed diene monomers and the subsequent postmodification of the internal C=C bonds. Two diene monomers containing perfluoroalkyl segments [-(CF2)(n)-, n=4 and 6] were synthesized through the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of dodecafluoro-1, 6-diiodohexane and octafluoro-1, 4-diiodobutane with 1,5-hexadiene and the subsequent deiodination. ADMET polymerization of these two monomers with Grubbs-I catalyst led to periodic polymers containing perfluoroalkyl segments and internal C=C bonds. Subsequent postpolymerization modification with thiolacetic acid and the following oxidation with hydrogen peroxide afforded the final polymers. The polymers were characterized by NMR, GPC, and FTIR, and the thermal properties of the final copolymers were investigated by DSC and TGA. These polymers exhibited high thermal stability as compared to other precisely sulfonated polyethylene analogues; therefore, they may be potentially investigated as efficient proton transport membranes.
Synthesis of Isotactic Polystyrene in Hydrocarbons by Initiation with T-Buli in the Presence of Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate

Abstract:Isotactic rich polystyrene was synthesized at 30 degrees C by the t-BuLi initiated polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) in hexane or cyclohexane. The polymerization rates at 30 degrees C were very fast and typically gave quantitative conversions. At SDBS/t-BuLi molar ratios between 0.5 and 1.0, the unfractionated polystyrene had almost the same stereoregularity. with triad and pentad contents of about 45% and 19%, respectively. The polymers could be fractionated into a more isotactic PS (mm = 0.77) and other fractions with lower isotactic content. The influence on the stereochemistry of lithium and potassium dodecylbenzenesulfonates or other sulfonate derivatives, reaction temperature and solvent have also been investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to simulate the reactive sites using 1-lithio-1,3-diphenylbutane and 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (SBS) were used as simplified models of polystyryllithium and SDBS respectively. DFT calculation results indicated that unlike the simpler LDPB model and LDPB-styrene complexes, the pro-m-SBS-LDPB-styrene complexes were the preferred stereochemical configuration consistent with the formation of long isotactic pentad sequences. Facilitated and Site-Specific Assembly of Functional Polystyrene Microspheres on Patterned Porous Films

Abstract:Functional patterned materials have received considerable attention because of their potential applications in biochips, sensors, and optical or electronic materials. Here, we report a versatile approach to functional patterned films based on facilitated and site-specific assembly of microspheres. This method includes the hierarchical formation of honeycomb-patterned porous films from amphiphilic block copolymers and the assembly of functional polystyrene microspheres driven by the gravity and the electrostatic interaction. Polystyrene microspheres containing carboxyl groups with a narrow size distribution were synthesized by dispersion polymerization. Honeycomb-patterned porous films were prepared from polystyrene-block-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PDMAEMA) by the breath figure method and then quaternized. We found that direct deposition of the microspheres on the patterned films reaches high filling ratio only when using ethanol dispersions that can wet the film pores. Plasma treatment of the films improves the hydrophilicity and introduces charged species to the external surface as well as the pore surface, leading to nonspecific assembly of microspheres. Negatively charged microspheres dispersed in buffer solution show a facilitated and site-specific assembly on the quaternized film. The electrostatic interaction as well as the gravity facilitates the assembly and the suborder arrangement of the hydrophilic PDMAEMA block around the pores is responsible for the site-specific assembly. In addition, we demonstrate the applicability of this method in preparing photoluminescent patterns by the assembly of porphyrinated microspheres, which is useful in various fields such as intelligent sensing.

Abstract:A series of precisely defined, mono- and heterotelechelic polystyrenes have been facilely synthesized by combining living anionic polymerization with other efficient chemical transformations, such as thiol-ene "click" chemistry and hydrosilylation reactions, leading to a versatile and general functionalization methodology for chain-end-functionalized anionic polymers. Specifically, alpha-vinyl-ended poly(styryl)lithiums, which were prepared using 4-pentenyllithium as an initiator under high-vacuum conditions, were reacted with different end-capping reagents using living functionalization methods to afford various chain-end functionalities quantitatively, namely, alpha-vinylpolystyrene, alpha-vinyl-omega-hydroxylpolystyrene, and alpha-vinyl-omega-hydrosilylpolystyrene. Subsequent functionalizations using photoinitiated thiol-ene "click" chemistry and hydrosilylation reactions allow facile and efficient installation of diverse functionalities onto the alpha- and omega-chain ends of these polymers, respectively, including amine groups, carboxylic acid groups, hydroxyl groups, and perfluorinated alkyl chains. It was found that the heterofunctionalization should be carried out in the sequence of hydrosilylation and then thiol-ene reaction to achieve precisely defined products, probably due to the side products associated with the reaction between silyl hydrides and radical intermediates. The polymers have been thoroughly characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to establish their chemical structures and chain-end functionalities, which indicates precisely defined mono- and heterotelechelic polystyrenes with 100% functionalities. These polymers serve as important model compounds in the study of their bulk properties as well as self-assembling behaviors.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated various generations of waxy dendrons, dendritic side-chain polymers (varying the structure and polarity of the polymer backbone), and physical blends of dendrons with polymers for their ability to form honeycomb-like structures. Each waxy dendron comprises a focal part (possessing many hydrogen bonding sites) and a peripheral part (rich in units that undergo van der Waals interactions). Using a breath-figure process, we readily incorporated high-generation dendrons within polymer matrixes to form porous surfaces. When the high-generation waxy dendrons were grafted onto amino group – functionalized polystyrene or copolymerized with diisocyanates to form polyurethanes, the multiple long alkyl chains behaved as bristles of hydrophobic brooms, due to the presence of strong van der Waals forces. The formation of honeycomb-like patterns in the polymer films resulted from strong hydrogen bonding of the polymers to water droplets on the surfaces of substrates, with subsequent self-organization and phase separation.

Abstract:A series of well-defined two-armed polymers containing a crown ether core, poly(stearyl methacrylate)-crown ether-poly(stearyl methacrylate) (PSMA-crown-PSMA), with different molecular weight were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The resultant polymers were characterized by 1H NMR and GPC. The self-assembly behaviors of this kind of polymer in selective solvents were studied by TEM, and it was found that polymers with different molecular weight can directly self-assemble into hollow spheres, solid spheres and a monolayer film with regular pores by varying molecular weight and water content. The possible molecular packing motels for their self-assembly behaviors were proposed.

Abstract:Highly ordered supramolecular polymer honeycomb-patterned films were fabricated successfully via the static breath figure method. The supramolecular polymer that was used to prepare these intriguing films was obtained from the self-organization of a heteroditopic monomer based on the benzo-21-crown-7/secondary ammonium salt recognition motif. The morphologies of these microstructures were observed by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques. The monomer concentration plays an important role in the fabrication of these supramolecular polymer microstructures. The pore size of honeycomb-patterned films decreases with the increase of the monomer concentration from 4 wt% to 30 wt%. A microsphere (900 nm) pattern and a highly-ordered honeycomb-patterned film (2.0 mu m) were obtained via the static breath figure method using acetonitrile as the solvent at concentrations of 2 wt% and 30 wt%, respectively.

Abstract:Particle-assisted fabrication of honeycomb-structured hybrid films was carried out by employing particles as stabilizers in the breath figures (BF) method. Such a procedure tested the possibility of the combination of Pickering emulsions and breath figures, which are two classical self-assembly processes. Regularly patterned porous polystyrene film with particles decorating the inside walls of the open pores can be readily prepared. Silica particles were used as a model candidate to study the influence of both physical and chemical factors, including size, wettability, and application quantity, of the particles on BF pattern formation. Different assembling characteristics of the particles under different circumstances are also discussed. To further extend the application of such particle-assisted, bottom-up surface patterning technique to other kinds of particles, polystyrene particles and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-acrylic acid microgels were employed to serve as stabilizers in BF method. As expected, all three kinds of particles, including solid inorganic, solid polymeric and microgel ones, succeeded in assisting in the formation of BF arrays in polymer films. Abstract:Well-defined comblike atactic polystyrene functionalized with hydroxyl groups was synthesized via living/controlling radical polymerization promoted by metallocene complexes in the presence of poly(phenyl glycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde as the initiator and Sn as a reducing agent. The effect of the polymerization conditions, such as the ratio of initiator to monomer, temperature, and polymerization time, and the structure of the metallocene complex on the polymerization process were investigated. The resulting polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, multiangle laser light scattering, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR. The results show that the polymer had a narrow molecular weight distribution in the range 1.1.-1.4 and the number-average molecular weight of the polymer linearly depended on the monomer conversion within the polymerization timescale, which confirmed that living radical polymerization characteristics prevailed in the polymerization process. Both the number of arms and the number of hydroxyl groups in each polymer molecule were about four, which suggested that they arose from the epoxy functional groups of the initiator. Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was performed to prepare azide end-functional polystyrene (PSt-N3) with predesigned molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. Then C60 end-capped polystyrene was synthesized by reacting C60 with PSt-N3. The UV-VIS, DSC, GPC characterizations indicated that C60 was chemically bonded to the end of polystyrene chain, and the brown powder products, which can be dissolved in THF, CHCl3, DMF, and so forth, were monoadditional and diadditional according to C60. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
