Abstract:The energetic particle spectrometer HEP-LD on the Japanese mission GEOTAIL was a precursor for the RAPID instrument on the four CLUSTER spacecraft (with the exception of the imaging electron detector IES). The ion detection system IIMS in both HEP-LD and RAPID identifies the particle's mass A, energy E, and velocity vector V by combining a position sensitive time-of-flight detector with an energy detector (SSD) as the back element. The energy range extends from about 50 keV up to 4 MeV total energy. The electron measuring system IES on RAPID covers 20 keV to 400 keV by using the energy-range relationship to separate electrons from heavier particles. The 10 by 30 RE ecliptic GEOTAIL orbit is orthogonal to the polar CLUSTER trajectory. However, in selected regions of geospace the two missions are comparable or complementary such that observations with HEP-LD provide some reference for RAPID on CLUSTER. The inbound leg of the GEOTAIL orbit on March 28 to 29, 1997 contains a number of typical events for which the CLUSTER multi-point measurements are expected to advance our understanding in a significant sense.
