Abstract:We develop a unifying approach bridging between the spin and vortex glasses, based, on one hand, on the application of the replica method to Ginzburg-Landau description of the system in terms of the superconductor order parameter near Tc and, on the other hand, on the notion of the extreme value statistics that govern the distribution of the energy barriers controlling the glassy slow dynamics of the vortices. Focusing on the vortex systems not very far from the upper critical field we demonstrate that the glassy behavior is associated with the continuous replica symmetry breaking, which is the inherent feature of the long range spin glasses. We apply our results to the description of vortex phase diagram and find the vortex glass transition line, which appears different and well separated from both the melting line and from the so-called second peak lines.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in type II superconductor are studied within three-dimension anisotropic XY model by resistively-shunted junction(RSJ) dynamics.It is found that the static vortex glass phase can be transformed into the moving vortex glass in the presence of external current.At low temperature,the system undergoes three phase transitions.With the increase of the current,from the moving vortex glass,the system is first driven to the moving Bragg glass,then to the moving Smectic,and finally melts to the moving liquid.

Abstract:Dynamics of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors with strong disorder is investigated within the frustrated three-dimensional XY model. For two typical models byOlsson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 077002 (2003)] and Kawamura [Phys. Rev. B 68, 220502 (R) (2003)], strong evidence for the finite temperature vortex glass transition in the unscreened limit is provided by performing large-scale dynamical simulations. The obtained correlation length exponents and the dynamic exponents in both models are different from each other and from those in the three-dimensional gauge glass model. In addition, a genuine continuous depinning transition is observed at zero temperature for both models. A scaling analysis for the thermal rounding of the depinning transition shows a non-Arrhenius type creep motion in the vortex glass phase, contrarily to the recent studies.

Abstract:We investigate effects of disorder and thermal fluctuations on the Abrikosov state of type II superconductors applying the Monte Carlo method to Ginzburg–Landau theory to confirm earlier replica calculation. The vortex phase diagram has two transition lines, the melting line and the vortex glass transition lines in both crystalline and homogeneous states. The glass line is always a continuous transition, while the melting line is the first order.

Abstract:A metastable supercooled homogeneous vortex liquid state exists down to zero fluctuation temperature in systems of mutually repelling objects. The zero temperature liquid state therefore serves as a (pseudo) ‘fixed point’ controlling the properties of vortex liquid below and even around the melting point. Based on this picture, a quantitative theory of vortex melting and glass transition in Type II superconductors in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau approach is presented. The melting line location is determined and magnetization and specific heat jumps are calculated. The point-like disorder shifts the line downwards and joins the order-disorder transition line. On the other hand, the disorder induces irreversible effects via replica symmetry breaking. The irreversibility line can be calculated within the Gaussian variational method. Therefore, the generic phase diagram contains four phases divided by the irreversibility line and melting line: liquid, solid, vortex glass and Bragg glass. We compare various experimental results with the theoretical formula.
Replica Symmetry Broken States of some Glass Models

Abstract:We have studied in detail the $M$-$p$ balanced spin glass model, especially the case $p=4$. These types of model have relevance to structural glasses. The models possess two kinds of broken replica states; those with one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) and those with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB). To determine which arises requires studying the Landau expansion to quintic order. There are 9 quintic order coefficients, and 5 quartic order coefficients, whose values we determine for this model. We show that it is only for $2 \leq M < 2.4714 \cdots$ that the transition at mean-field level is to a state with FRSB, while for larger $M$ values there is either a continuous transition to a state with 1RSB (when $ M \leq 3$) or a discontinuous transition for $M > 3$. The Gardner transition from a 1RSB state at low temperatures to a state with FRSB also requires the Landau expansion to be taken to quintic order. Our result for the form of FRSB in the Gardner phase is similar to that found when $2 \leq M < 2.4714\cdots$, but differs from that given in the early paper of Gross et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 304 (1985)]. Finally we discuss the effects of fluctuations on our mean-field solutions using the scheme of Höller and Read [Phys. Rev. E 101, 042114 (2020)}] and argue that such fluctuations will remove both the continuous 1RSB transition and discontinuous 1RSB transitions when $8 >d \geq 6$ leaving just the FRSB continuous transition. We suggest values for $M$ and $p$ which might be used in simulations to confirm whether fluctuation corrections do indeed remove the 1RSB transitions.

Abstract:Spin glasses are quintessential examples of complex matter. Although much about their order remains uncertain, abstract models of them inform, e.g., the classification of combinatorial optimization problems, the magnetic ordering in metals with impurities, and artificial intelligence -- where they form a mathematical basis for neural network computing and brain modeling. We demonstrate the ability of an active quantum gas microscope to realize a spin glass of a novel driven-dissipative and vector form. By microscopically visualizing its glassy spin states, the technique allows us to directly measure replica symmetry breaking and the resulting ultrametric hierarchical structure. Ultrametricity is known to be emergent in models of evolution, protein folding, climate change, and infinite-range equilibrium spin glasses; this work shows it to be directly observable in a physically realized system.

Abstract:Using Monte Carlo molecular dynamics simulation for a two-dimensional vortex lattice with random pinning, thermal fluctuations and vortex-vortex interactions, we study the order-disorder transition from a Bragg glass to an amorphous vortex glass or a vortex liquid in the pinning strength-temperature phase diagram. In order to determine the order in the vortex lattice, we calculate the static structure factor and evaluate the finite size exponent from the configurations of the vortex lattice. It is found that the Bragg glass region is sandwiched in between the disordered vortex glass phase at lower temperatures and the vortex liquid phase at higher temperatures, exhibiting inverse melting behavior. We attribute the unusual inverse melting behavior to the temperature dependence of the vortex-vortex interactions.
Replica Symmetry Breaking in Random Non-Hermitian Systems

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed intriguing similarities between the contribution of wormholes to the gravitational path integral and the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking observed in spin glasses and other disordered systems. Interestingly, these configurations may also be important for the explanation of the information paradox of quantum black holes. Motivated by these developments, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a PT-symmetric system composed of two random non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with no explicit coupling between them. After performing ensemble averaging, we identify numerically and analytically a robust first-order phase transition in the free energy of two models with quantum chaotic dynamics: the elliptic Ginibre ensemble of random matrices and a non-Hermitian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. The free energy of the Ginibre model is temperature-independent in the low-temperature phase. The SYK model has a similar behavior for sufficiently low temperature, then it experiences a possible continuous phase transition to a phase with a temperature-dependent free energy before the first-order transition takes place at a higher temperature. We identify the order parameter of the first-order phase transition and obtain analytical expressions for the critical temperature. The mechanism behind the transition is the existence of replica symmetry breaking configurations coupling Left and Right replicas that control the low-temperature limit of the partition function. We speculate that quantum chaos may be necessary for the observed dominance of off-diagonal replica symmetry breaking configurations in the low-temperature limit.
Absence of Thermodynamic Phase Transition in a Model Glass Former

Abstract:The glass transition can simply be viewed as the point at which the viscosity of a structurally disordered liquid reaches 10^{13} Poise [1]. This definition is operational but it sidesteps fundamental controversies about the glass: Is the transition a purely dynamical phenomenon [2]? This would mean that ergodicity gets broken, but that thermodynamic properties of the liquid remain unchanged across the transition if determined as thermodynamic equilibrium averages over the whole phase space. The opposite view [3-6] claims that an underlying thermodynamic phase transition is responsible for the dramatic slowdown at the liquid-glass boundary. Such a phase transition (which shows up in proper equilibrium phase space averages) would trigger the dynamic standstill, and then get masked by it. A recent Monte Carlo algorithm [7] introduces non-local moves for hard-core systems in a way which preserves micro-reversibility. Here we use this method to equilibrate a two-dimensional hard disc system far within its glassy phase. We show that indications of a thermodynamic transition are lacking up to very high densities, and that the glass is indistinguishable from the liquid on purely thermodynamic grounds.

Fragile-to-strong glass transition in two-dimensional vortex liquids

Abstract:The fragile-to-strong glass transition is a fascinating phenomenon that still presents many theoretical and experimental challenges. A major one is how to tune the fragility of a glass-forming liquid. Here, we study a two-dimensional (2D) system composed of vortices in a superconducting film, which effectively behaves as a 2D glass-forming liquid. We show that the kinetic fragility in this system can be experimentally varied by tuning a single parameter: the external magnetic field $H$ applied transversely to the film. This conclusion is supported by the direct comparison between the analysis of experimental measurements in an amorphous MoGe superconducting film and Monte Carlo simulations in a disordered XY model, that captures the universality class of the two-step melting transition. We show that by increasing disorder strength a fragile-to-strong transition is induced, in close similarity with the experimental findings in a magnetic field. Our numerical results shed light on the evolution of the dynamical heterogeneity from a fragile to strong glass, as due to the subtle interplay between caging effects arising from hexatic order and strong random pinning.

Abstract:Of the many different kinds of glassy states found in nature, spin glasses and structural glasses (e.g. normal window glass) have probably received the most attention. One of the central questions concerning the glassy state is whether the "glass" is a distinct thermodynamic phase from the "liquid" phase. It is believed that this may actually be the case for spin glasses, whereas the glass transition in structural glasses appears to be mostly kinetic in nature. Supercooled structural liquids, however, exhibit a wide range of behaviors, which can be classified using the "strong-fragile" scheme of Angell, where the terms "strong" and "fragile" refer to Arrhenius and highly non-Arrhenius relaxation behaviors, respectively. For the extremely fragile liquids, a thermodynamic origin of the glass transition cannot be ruled out. A microscopic understanding of the complexity leading to different degrees of fragility and affecting the kinetic glass transition is, however, lacking. Also the connection, if any, between the different kind of glass states (spin, structural, etc.) is unclear. Here we examine the glassy behavior of a novel type of matter, namely the vortex matter in the high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) YBa2Cu3Ox.
Replica symmetry breaking in spin glasses in the replica-free Keldysh formalism

Abstract:We show that the algebra of Parisi ultrametric matrices is recovered by the real-time, replica-free, Dyson-Keldysh equations of infinite-range quantum spin glasses in the late time glassy limit. This connects to earlier results on classical and quantum systems showing how ultrametricity emerges from the persistent slow aging dynamics of the glass phase. The stationary spin glass state thereby spontaneously breaks thermal symmetry, or the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation of a state in global thermal equilibrium. We describe the Keldysh path integral of the infinite-range Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields, and in the context of the Landau expansion of the action functional, show how the long-time limit connects to the full replica symmetry breaking obtained in the equilibrium formalism. We also illustrate our formalism by applying it to the spherical quantum $p$-spin model, which only exhibits one-step replica symmetry breaking

Fragility of the glassy state of a directed polymer in random media: a replica approach

Abstract:We study the stability of the glassy equilibrium state of a directed polymer in random media against weak perturbations including the intriguing problem of temperature-chaos. The statistical correlation of two real replica systems under perturbations, such as small difference of temperature, is studied using the mapping to a quantum problem of interacting bosons. Explicit replica symmetry breaking takes place being induced by the infinitesimally weak perturbations in the $n \to 0$ limit followed by the thermodynamic limit which leads to complete decorrelation of the two real replicas. The overlap lengths anticipated by phenomenological scaling arguments are retrieved as a correlation length associated with this explicit replica symmetry breaking.

Simultaneous replica-symmetry breaking for vector spin glasses

Abstract:We consider mean-field vector spin glasses with possibly non-convex interactions. Up to a small perturbation of the parameters defining the model, the asymptotic behavior of the Gibbs measure is described in terms of a critical point of an explicit functional. In this paper, we study some properties of these critical points. Under modest assumptions ensuring that different types of spins interact, we show that the replica-symmetry-breaking structures of the different types of spins are in one-to-one correspondence with one another. For instance, if some type of spins displays one level of replica-symmetry breaking, then so do all the other types of spins. This extends the recent results of [Electronic Journal of Probability, 27:1-75, 2022] and [Comm. Math. Phys., 394(3):1101-1152, 2022] that were obtained in the case of multi-species spherical spin glasses with convex interactions.

Abstract:Spin glasses are a longstanding model for the sluggish dynamics that appear at the glass transition. However, spin glasses differ from structural glasses in a crucial feature: they enjoy a time reversal symmetry. This symmetry can be broken by applying an external magnetic field, but embarrassingly little is known about the critical behavior of a spin glass in a field. In this context, the space dimension is crucial. Simulations are easier to interpret in a large number of dimensions, but one must work below the upper critical dimension (i.e., in d < 6) in order for results to have relevance for experiments. Here we show conclusive evidence for the presence of a phase transition in a four-dimensional spin glass in a field. Two ingredients were crucial for this achievement: massive numerical simulations were carried out on the Janus special-purpose computer, and a new and powerful finite-size scaling method.

Abstract:We review several models of glassy systems where the randomness is self generated, i.e. already an infinitesimal amount of disorder is sufficient to cause a transition to a non-ergodic, glassy state. We discuss the application of the replica formalism developed for the spin glass systems to study the glass transition in uniformly frustrated many-body systems. Here a localization in configuration space emerges leading to an entropy crisis of the system. Using a combination of density functional theory and Landau theory of the glassy state, we first analyze the mean field glass transition within the saddle point approximation. We go beyond the saddle point approximation by considering the energy fluctuations around the saddle point and evaluate the barrier height distribution.

Unifying the Temperature Dependent Dynamics of Glasses

Abstract:Strong changes in bulk properties, such as modulus and viscosity, are observed near the glass transition temperature, T_{g}, of amorphous materials. For more than a century, intense efforts have been made to define a microscopic origin for these macroscopic changes in properties. Using transition state theory, we delve into the atomic/molecular level picture of how microscopic localized relaxations, or "cage rattles," translate to macroscopic structural relaxations above T_{g}. Unit motion is broken down into two populations: (1) simultaneous rearrangement occurs among a critical number of units, n_{\alpha}, which ranges from 1 to 4, allowing a systematic classification of glasses that is compared to fragility; (2) near T_{g}, adjacent units provide additional free volume for rearrangement, not simultaneously, but within the "primitive" lifetime, {\tau}_{1}, of one unit rattling in its cage. Relaxation maps illustrate how Johari-Goldstein \{beta} relaxations stem from the rattle of n_{\alpha} units. We analyzed a wide variety of glassy materials, and materials with glassy response, using literature data. Our four-parameter equation fits "strong" and "weak" glasses over the entire range of temperatures and also extends to other glassy systems, such as ion-transporting polymers and ferroelectric relaxors. The role of activation entropy in boosting preexponential factors to high "unphysical" apparent frequencies is discussed.

Abstract:We study the equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum hard spheres in the infinite-dimensional limit, determining the boundary between liquid and glass phases in the temperature-density plane by means of the Franz-Parisi potential. We find that as the temperature decreases from high values, the effective radius of the spheres is enhanced by a multiple of the thermal de Broglie wavelength, thus increasing the effective filling fraction and decreasing the critical density for the glass phase. Numerical calculations show that the critical density continues to decrease monotonically as the temperature decreases further, suggesting that the system will form a glass at sufficiently low temperatures for any density. The methods used in this paper can be extended to more general potentials, and also to other transitions such as the Kauzman/Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) transition, the Gardner transition, and potentially even jamming. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.044112 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The role of reflection symmetry breaking for the character of the appearance of replica symmetric spin glass state is investigated. We establish the following symmetry rule for classical systems with one order parameter in the replica symmetric mean field approximation. If in the pure system the transition to the ordered phase is of the second order, then in the corresponding random system the glass regime appears as a result of a phase transition; if the transition in the pure system is of the first order, then glass and ordered regimes grow continuously in the random system on cooling.
