Abstract:A highly connected 3D metal-organic framework with tfz-d topology based on Zn(6)O(2) clusters and flexible carboxylate ligands has been synthesized. The obtained Zn-MOF shows solvatochromic behavior for fluorescence sensing of small molecules, gas adsorption properties and exceptional chemical stability and might have applications for separation and detection purposes.

Abstract:Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the subject of considerable research interest because of their high porosity and capability of specific binding to small molecules, thus underpinning a wide range of materials functions such as gas adsorption, separation, drug delivery, catalysis, and sensing. MOFs, constructed by the designed assembly of metal ions and functional organic linkers, are an emerging class of porous materials with extended porous structures containing periodic binding sites. MOFs thus provide a new platform for the study of the chemistry and reactivity of small molecules in confined pores using advanced diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. In this review, we focus on recent progress in experimental investigations on the crystallographic, dynamic and kinetic aspects of substrate binding within porous MOFs. In particular, we focus on studies on host-guest interactions involving open metal sites or pendant functional groups in the pore as the primary binding sites for guest molecules.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely recognized as one of the most fascinating classes of materials from science and engineering perspectives, benefiting from their high porosity and well-defined and tailored structures and components at the atomic level. Although their intrinsic micropores endow size-selective capability and high surface area, etc., the narrow pores limit their applications toward diffusion-control and large-size species involved processes. In recent years, the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs (HP-MOFs), MOF-based hierarchically porous composites, and MOF-based hierarchically porous derivatives has captured widespread interest to extend the applications of conventional MOF-based materials. In this Review, the recent advances in the design, synthesis, and functional applications of MOF-based hierarchically porous materials are summarized. Their structural characters toward various applications, including catalysis, gas storage and separation, air filtration, sewage treatment, sensing and energy storage, have been demonstrated with typical reports. The comparison of HP-MOFs with traditional porous materials (e.g., zeolite, porous silica, carbons, metal oxides, and polymers), subsisting challenges, as well as future directions in this research field, are also indicated.

Abstract:Solid-state grinding is a simple and effective method to include guest species into the channels of ordered mesoporous materials with a different degree of filling. After calcination, a monolayer or several monolayers of guest species can not only form highly dispersed oxide species and other surface species on the hosts whether the template is occluded in the channels or not, but the guest species can also fill the mesoporous channels in the host and thus lead to nanowires or nanoarrays. Solid-state salt inclusion is faster and more convenient than other inclusion routes. The absence of a solvent not only saves the time otherwise needed for evaporation but also leads to a higher degree of filling through a simple inclusion step as the void space in the pores is not occupied by the solvent. Also, the lack of competitive adsorption of solvent molecules enhances the interaction between the guest species included and the silica wall, which facilitates the high dispersion of oxide species. However, host-guest interactions that are too strong may disturb the self-crystallization of guest species in the mesopores leading to imperfect nanocasting of the mesostructure.

Abstract:A bio-inspired design of using metal-organic framework (MOF) microcrystals with well-defined multi-shelled hollow structures was used as a matrix to host multiple guests including molecules and nanoparticles at separated locations to form a hierarchical material, mimicking biological structures. The interactions such as energy transfer (ET) between different guests are regulated by precisely fixing them in the MOF shells or encapsulating them in the cavities between the MOF shells. The proof-of-concept design is demonstrated by hosting chromophore molecules including rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 7-amino-4-(trifluoromethyl)coumarin (C-151), as well as metal nanoparticles (Pd NPs) into the multi-shelled hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). We could selectively establish or diminish the guest-to-framework and guest-to-guest ET. This work provides a platform to construct complex multifunctional materials, especially those need precise separation control of multi-components.

Abstract:Zeolites are a family of microporous crystalline materials, which, since the 1940s, have had an indispensable role in the chemical industry as catalysts, adsorbents and ion exchangers. Advances in synthetic methodologies and characterization techniques have enabled the fabrication of new zeolitic materials, with emerging applications in diverse areas. By tuning their porous architectures, framework compositions and crystal morphologies, coupled with the incorporation of exotic active species, zeolites and zeolite-based materials have exhibited unprecedentedly high performance in many challenging processes. In this Review, we focus on the high-efficiency catalytic production of industrially important hydrocarbons and oxygenates using non-petrochemical feedstocks, energy-efficient separations of hydrocarbon mixtures that are difficult using conventional methods and materials, and host–guest assemblies that exhibit physical properties unprecedented to either the zeolite hosts or free guest species. Finally, we provide our perspectives on future directions for the development of zeolitic materials to meet the ever-growing demands from diverse fields.

Abstract:Guest(metal)-zeolite interactions in a two component heterogeneous catalyst have been investigated by high-field and high-speed Al-27 MAS NMR, and two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR experiments as well as ab initio DFT methods. It was established that strong interactions between guest and zeolite occur in a metal/zeolite system, with the metal anchored to the tetrahedral aluminum framework site through two oxygen bridges. It disturbs the tetrahedral environment of associated aluminum framework, changing AlO4 geometry from near T-d to C-2v; this enables us to resolve this species from the undisturbed aluminum framework species in high-field Al-27, MAS NMR and two-dimesional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR experiments.

Abstract:The molecular design of porous solids from predefined building blocks, in particular metal-organic and covalent frameworks, has been a tremendous success in the past two decades approaching record porosities and more importantly was an enabler for integrating predefined molecular functionality (enantioselectivity, optical and catalytic properties) into pore walls. Recent efforts indicate that this concept could also be applicable to rationally design porous and nanostructured carbonaceous materials, a class of materials hitherto and especially in the past often considered as "black magic" in terms of pore-wall structure definition and surface functionality. Carbon precursors with structural and compositional information in their molecular backbone, pre-formed covalent bonds, or integrated functional groups enable the design of carbon materials that can be tailored for certain applications. We review this exciting field of synthetic approaches based on molecular building blocks such as ionic liquids, bio molecules, or organic precursor monomers enabling the design of advanced carbonaceous architectures such as porous carbons, porous carbon-rich polymers or graphene nanoribbons. Moreover, our review includes approaches using the reactive and thermal transformation of periodic crystalline structures such as metal-organic frameworks, or carbides into equally defined carbon material. Such molecularly designed carbons are not only ideal model materials for fundamental science but also emerge in applications with until now unattained functionality.

Abstract:Homogeneous host-guest (H-G) MOF composites without heterogeneous interfaces attracted wide attention in recent years. H-G interaction as a "bridge" plays an important role in the development and application of H-G MOF composites. The bridge dominates the connection of hosts and guests, and provides additional charge and energy transfer pathways to improve the performance of homogeneous H-G MOF composites. In this review, we focus on H-G interaction to discuss the combination of host MOFs and guests, and analyze the factors regulating the combination. The homogeneous H-G MOF composites with excellent catalytic performances reported in recent years as representative examples are summarized, and the regulatory factors of the catalytic performance are explored in detail. The synergistic mechanisms of H-G MOF composites during the catalytic process are analyzed deeply. Besides, some challenges and perspectives of developing H-G MOF composites are proposed to provide a reference for future development.

Abstract:Composite materials can provide remarkable improvements over the individual constituents. Especially, with a liquid component introduced into a solid porous host, solid–liquid host–guest composites have recently come to the forefront with exceptional functions that promise them for a wealth of applications. Combining the unprecedented dynamic, transparent, omniphobic, self-healing, diffusive and adaptive nature of functional liquid with inherent solid host's property, solid–liquid host–guest composites can realize the ease of fabrication, long-term stability, and a broad spectrum of enhanced properties, which cannot be fully met by conventional solid–solid composites or liquid–liquid composites. This review presents the state-of-the-art progress in solid–liquid host–guest composites. Initially, the concept, classification, design strategy, as well as fabrication methods as a path forward to develop the composites are unraveled, and further it is elaborated on how the functionality of porous solid and functional liquid can be harnessed to create composites with a broad range of unique properties, especially, the optical, thermal, electric, mechanical, sorption, and separation properties. With these fascinating properties, a myriad of emerging applications such as optical devices, thermal management, electromagnetic-interference shielding, soft electronics, gas capture and release, and multiphase separations are touched upon, inspiring more frontier researches in materials science, interfacial chemistry, membrane science, engineering, and multidisciplinary. Finally, this review provides the perspective on the future directions of solid–liquid host–guest composites and assesses the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.

Abstract:The fabrication of novel porous materials remains of great interest because of their intriguing architectures, various properties, and promising applications. As typical porous materials with high crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted continuous attention to the scientific community. However, poor stability and monotonous pore structures hinder their practical and/or advanced applications. To address these concerns, many researchers have devoted themselves to the topics of hierarchical structures and composites by the combination of different components. The present review focuses on the recent advances in MOF-silica composites, where the silica materials can be porous or nonporous. It first provides the fundamentals of porous materials, including zeolites, mesoporous silica, and MOFs, and then shifts to the fabrication of MOF-silica composites. In the following sections, the emphasis of the discussion is placed on the applications of MOF-silica composites, such as adsorption, catalysis, drug release, extraction, magnetism, and sensing. Furthermore, the applications of MOF-silica composites-derived carbon materials are also reviewed and discussed in detail.
