Abstract:Galaxy clusters as gravitational lenses play a unique role in astrophysics and cosmology: they permit mapping the dark matter distribution on a range of scales; they reveal the properties of high and intermediate redshift background galaxies that would otherwise be unreachable with telescopes; they constrain the particle nature of dark matter and are a powerful probe of global cosmological parameters, like the Hubble constant. In this review we summarize the current status of cluster lensing observations and the insights they provide, and offer a glimpse into the capabilities that ongoing, and the upcoming next generation of telescopes and surveys will deliver. While many open questions remain, cluster lensing promises to remain at the forefront of discoveries in astrophysics and cosmology.

Abstract:Galaxy-scale strong lensing is a powerful tool in Astrophysics and Cosmology, enabling studies of massive galaxies' internal structure, their formation and evolution, stellar initial mass function, and cosmological parameters. In this conference proceeding, we highlight key findings from the past decade in astrophysical applications of strong lensing at the galaxy scale. We then briefly summarize the present status of discovery and analyses of new samples from recent or ongoing surveys. Finally, we offer insights into anticipated developments in the upcoming era of big data shaping the future of this field, thanks to the Rubin, Euclid, and Roman observatories.

Abstract:Dark matter structures within strong gravitational lens galaxies and along their line of sight leave a gravitational imprint on the multiple images of lensed sources. Strong gravitational lensing provides, therefore, a key test of different dark matter models in a way that is independent of the baryonic content of matter structures on subgalactic scales. In this chapter, we describe how galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing observations are sensitive to the physical nature of dark matter. We provide a historical perspective of the field, and review its current status. We discuss the challenges and advances in terms of data, treatment of systematic errors and theoretical predictions, that will enable one to deliver a stringent and robust test of different dark matter models in the near future. With the advent of the next generation of sky surveys, the number of known strong gravitational lens systems is expected to increase by several orders of magnitude. Coupled with high-resolution follow-up observations, these data will provide a key opportunity to constrain the properties of dark matter with strong gravitational lensing.

Discovery of a Galaxy Cluster via Weak Lensing

Abstract:We report the discovery of a cluster of galaxies via its weak gravitational lensing effect on background galaxies, the first spectroscopically confirmed cluster to be discovered through its gravitational effects rather than by its electromagnetic radiation. This fundamentally different selection mechanism promises to yield mass-selected, rather than baryon or photon-selected, samples of these important cosmological probes. We have confirmed this cluster with spectroscopic redshifts of fifteen members at z=0.276, with a velocity dispersion of 615 km/s. We use the tangential shear as a function of source photometric redshift to estimate the lens redshift independently and find z_l = 0.30 +- 0.08. The good agreement with the spectroscopy indicates that the redshift evolution of the mass function may be measurable from the imaging data alone in shear-selected surveys.

Abstract:The Local Volume Complete Cluster Survey (LoVoCCS) is an on-going program to observe nearly a hundred low-redshift X-ray-luminous galaxy clusters (redshifts $0.03<z<0.12$ and X-ray luminosities in the 0.1-2.4 keV band $L_{\rm X500c}>10^{44}$ erg/s) with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), capturing data in $u,g,r,i,z$ bands with a $5\sigma$ point source depth of approximately 25-26th AB magnitudes. Here, we map the aperture masses in 58 galaxy cluster fields using weak gravitational lensing. These clusters span a variety of dynamical states, from nearly relaxed to merging systems, and approximately half of them have not been subject to detailed weak lensing analysis before. In each cluster field, we analyze the alignment between the 2D mass distribution described by the aperture mass map, the 2D red-sequence (RS) galaxy distribution, and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We find that the orientations of the BCG and the RS distribution are strongly aligned throughout the interiors of the clusters: the median misalignment angle is 19 deg within 2 Mpc. We also observe the alignment between the orientations of the RS distribution and the overall cluster mass distribution (by a median difference of 32 deg within 1 Mpc), although this is constrained by galaxy shape noise and the limitations of our cluster sample size. These types of alignment suggest long-term dynamical evolution within the clusters over cosmic timescales.

Abstract:Strong gravitational lensing at the galaxy scale is a valuable tool for various applications in astrophysics and cosmology. The primary uses of galaxy-scale lensing are to study elliptical galaxies' mass structure and evolution, constrain the stellar initial mass function, and measure cosmological parameters. Since the discovery of the first galaxy-scale lens in the 1980s, this field has made significant advancements in data quality and modeling techniques. In this review, we describe the most common methods for modeling lensing observables, especially imaging data, as they are the most accessible and informative source of lensing observables. We then summarize the primary findings from the literature on the astrophysical and cosmological applications of galaxy-scale lenses. We also discuss the current limitations of the data and methodologies and provide an outlook on the expected improvements in both areas in the near future.

Strong gravitational lensing with upcoming wide-field radio surveys

Abstract:The number of strong lensing systems will soon increase by orders of magnitude thanks to sensitive, wide-field optical and infrared imaging surveys such as Euclid, Rubin-LSST, and Roman. A dramatic increase in strong lenses will also occur at radio wavelengths. The 2000-antenna Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-2000) will detect over $10^9$ continuum sources in the Northern Hemisphere with a high mean redshift ($\langle z_s \rangle \approx2$) and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will observe a large sample of extragalactic sources in the South with sub-arcsecond resolution. We forecast lensing rates, finding that the DSA-2000 will discover $\mathcal{O}(10^5)$ strongly lensed systems, many of which will be galaxy group and cluster lenses. We propose strategies for strong lensing discovery in the limit where the Einstein radii are comparable to the PSF angular scale, taking advantage of modern computer vision techniques and multi-survey data. We also forecast synergies with optical and infrared surveys, which will provide redshifts as well as multiwavelength information about the lens systems. Finally, we describe applications of radio strong lensing systems, including time-delay cosmography with transient and variable sources. We find that $\sim$100 time-variable flat-spectrum AGN discovered by the DSA-2000 could be used to constrain $H_0$ at the percent level with the appropriate follow-up.

Abstract:As one of the probes of universe, strong gravitational lensing systems allow us to compare different cosmological models and constrain vital cosmological parameters. This purpose can be reached from the dynamic and geometry properties of strong gravitational lensing systems, for instance, time-delay Delta tau of images, the velocity dispersion sigma of the lensing galaxies and the combination of these two effects, Delta tau/sigma(2). In this paper, in order to carry out one-on-one comparisons between Lambda CDM universe and R-h = ct universe, we use a sample containing 36 strong lensing systems with the measurement of velocity dispersion from the Sloan Lens Advanced Camera for Surveys (SLACS) and Lens Structure and Dynamic survey (LSD) survey. Concerning the time-delay effect, 12 two-image lensing systems with Delta tau are also used. In addition, Monte Carlo simulations are used to compare the efficiency of the three methods as mentioned above. From simulations, we estimate the number of lenses required to rule out one model at the 99.7 per cent confidence level. Comparing with constraints from Delta tau and the velocity dispersion sigma, we find that using Delta tau/sigma(2) can improve the discrimination between cosmological models. Despite the independence tests of these methods reveal a correlation between Delta tau/sigma(2) and sigma, Delta tau/sigma(2) could be considered as an improved method of s if more data samples are available.
The Redshift Difference in Gravitational Lensed Systems: A Novel Probe of Cosmology

Abstract:The exploration of the redshift drift, a direct measurement of cosmological expansion, is expected to take several decades of observation with stable, sensitive instruments. We introduced a new method to probe cosmology which bypasses the long-period observation by observing the redshift difference, an accumulation of the redshift drift, in multiple-image gravitational lens systems. With this, the photons observed in each image will have traversed through different paths between the source and the observer, and so the lensed images will show different redshifts when observed at the same instance. Here, we consider the impact of the underlying cosmology on the observed redshift difference in gravitational lens systems, generating synthetic data for realistic lens models and exploring the accuracy of determined cosmological parameters. We show that, whilst the redshift difference is sensitive to the densities of matter and dark energy within a universe, it is independent of the Hubble constant. Finally, we determine the observational considerations for using the redshift difference as a cosmological probe, finding that one thousand lensed sources are enough to make robust determinations of the underlying cosmological parameters. Upcoming cluster lens surveys, such as the Euclid, are expected to detect a sufficient number of such systems.

Abstract:Weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by foreground structures has proven to be a powerful tool to study the mass distribution in the universe. Nowadays, attention has shifted from clusters of galaxies to the statistical properties of the large scale structures and the halos of (field) galaxies. These applications have become feasible with the advent of panoramic cameras on 4m class telescopes. In this review we will give an overview of recent advances in this fast evolving field of astronomy. We start with a discussion of the recent measurements of weak lensing by large scale structure (‘cosmic shear’), which can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. We also show how weak lensing can be used to measure the relation between galaxies and dark matter (galaxy biasing) directly. Another area that benefitted greatly from the current data is the weak lensing by galaxies (galaxy–galaxy lensing). Weak lensing provides a unique probe of the gravitational potential on large scales. Hence, in the context of dark matter, it can provide constrains on the extent and shapes of dark matter halos. Furthermore, it can test alternative theories of gravity (without dark matter). The brest constraint comes from the first detection of the anisotropy of the lensing signal around lens galaxies, which suggest that the dark matter halos are flattened. An isotropic signal, as predicted by MOND, is excluded with 99% confidence.

Abstract:Strong gravitational lensing offers a powerful probe of the detailed distribution of matter in lenses, while magnifying and bringing faint background sources into view. Observed strong lensing by massive galaxy clusters, which are often in complex dynamical states, has also been used to map their dark matter substructures on smaller scales. Deep high resolution imaging has revealed the presence of strong lensing events associated with these substructures, namely galaxy-scale sub-halos. However, an inventory of these observed galaxy-galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) events is noted to be discrepant with state-of-the-art {\Lambda}CDM simulations. Cluster sub-halos appear to be over-concentrated compared to their simulated counterparts yielding an order of magnitude higher value of GGSL. In this paper, we explore the possibility of resolving this observed discrepancy by redistributing the mass within observed cluster sub-halos in ways that are consistent within the {\Lambda}CDM paradigm of structure formation. Lensing mass reconstructions from data provide constraints on the mass enclosed within apertures and are agnostic to the detailed mass profile within them. Therefore, as the detailed density profile within cluster sub-halos currently remains unconstrained by data, we are afforded the freedom to redistribute the enclosed mass. We investigate if rearranging the mass to a more centrally concentrated density profile helps alleviate the GGSL discrepancy. We report that refitting cluster sub-halos to the ubiquitous {\Lambda}CDM-motivated Navarro-Frenk-White profile, and further modifying them to include significant baryonic components, does not resolve this tension. A resolution to this persisting GGSL discrepancy may require more careful exploration of alternative dark matter models.

Gravitational Lensing of Galaxy Clustering

Abstract:We investigate lensing reconstruction using the clustered galaxy distribution as a source field, using both the traditional cosmic microwave background quadratic estimator and a shear-only estimator. We calculate the expected signal-to-noise ratio of the cross power spectrum of such reconstructions with cosmic shear measurements for an LSST-like galaxy survey. Modeling the galaxy field as a Gaussian random field, we find that there is substantial clustering signal in the source field at angular scales substantially smaller than those typically used by CMB reconstructions. The expected signal-to-noise for cross-correlations in LSST from cosmic shear is $\sim$60 in the presence of shape noise, while cross correlating with a sample-variance limited mass map would have signal-to-noise in the hundreds. This type of cross-correlation could be used as a way to identify systematic errors in lensing studies and is just one example of many possible higher order correlations in galaxy surveys that may contain substantial cosmological information.

Abstract:Magnification bias, an observational effect of gravitational lensing in the weak regime, allows the cosmological model to be tested through angular correlations of sources at different redshifts. This effect has been observed in various contexts, particularly with sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs), offering valuable astrophysical and cosmological insights. The study aims to investigate the magnification bias effect exerted by galaxy clusters on SMGs and its implications for astrophysical and cosmological parameters within the Lambda cold dark matter model. Magnification bias was explored by quantifying the cross-correlation function,which we then utilised to derive constraints on cosmological and astrophysical parameters with a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Two distinct galaxy cluster samples were used to assess result robustness and understand the influence of sample characteristics. Cluster samples show higher cross-correlation values than galaxies, with an excess at larger scales suggesting contributions from additional large-scale structures. The parameters obtained, while consistent with those of galaxies, are less constrained due to broader redshift distributions and limited cluster statistics. Results align with weak lensing studies, hinting at slightly lower $ and $ values than Planck 's cosmic microwave background data, emphasising the need for enhanced precision and alternative low-redshift universe tests. While this method yields constraints that are compatible with the Lambda cold dark matter model, its limitations include broader redshift distributions and a limited number of lenses, resulting in less constrained parameters compared to previous galaxy studies. Nonetheless, our study underscores the potential of using galaxy clusters as lenses for magnification bias studies, capitalising on their elevated masses and thus providing a promising avenue to test current cosmology theories. Further progress can be made by expanding the lens sample size.

Abstract:Strong gravitational lenses provide unique laboratories for cosmological and astrophysical investigations, but they must first be discovered - a task that can be met with significant contamination by other astrophysical objects and asterisms. Here we review strong lens searches, covering various sources (quasars, galaxies, supernovae, FRBs, GRBs, and GWs), lenses (early- and late-type galaxies, groups, and clusters), datasets (imaging, spectra, and lightcurves), and wavelengths. We first present the physical characteristics of the lens and source populations, highlighting relevant details for constructing targeted searches. Search techniques are described based on the main lensing feature that is required for the technique to work, namely one of: (i) an associated magnification, (ii) multiple spatially-resolved images, (iii) multiple redshifts, or (iv) a non-zero time delay between images. To use the current lens samples for science, and for the design of future searches, we list several selection biases that exist due to these discovery techniques. We conclude by discussing the future of lens searches in upcoming surveys and the new population of lenses that will be discovered.

Abstract:Over the past few years alone, the lensing community has discovered thousands of strong lens candidates, and spectroscopically confirmed hundreds of them. In this time of abundance, it becomes pragmatic to focus our time and resources on the few extraordinary systems, in order to most efficiently study the universe. In this paper, we present such a system: DESI-090.9854-35.9683, a cluster-scale lens at $z_{\rm l} = 0.49$, with seven observed lensed sources around the core, and additional lensed sources further out in the cluster. From the number and the textbook configuration of the lensed images, a tight constraint on the mass potential of the lens is possible. This would allow for detailed analysis on the dark and luminous matter content within galaxy clusters, as well as a probe into dark energy and high-redshift galaxies. We present our spatially resolved kinematic measurements of this system from the Very Large Telescope Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, which confirm five of these source galaxies (in ascending order, at $z_{\rm s} = 0.962, 0.962, 1.166, 1.432,$ and $1.432$). With previous Hubble Space Telescope imaging in the F140W and F200LP bands, we also present a simple two power-law profile flux-based lens model that, for a cluster lens, well models the five lensed arc families with redshifts. We determine the mass to be $M(< \theta_{\rm E}) = 4.78\times10^{13} M_{\odot}$ for the primary mass potential. From the model, we extrapolate the redshift of one of the two source galaxies not yet spectroscopically confirmed to be at $z_{\rm s}=4.52^{+1.03}_{-0.71}$.

Abstract:Current efforts in observational cosmology are focused on characterizing the mass-energy content of the Universe. We present results from a geometric test based on strong lensing in galaxy clusters. Based on Hubble Space Telescope images and extensive ground-based spectroscopic follow-up of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 1689, we used a parametric model to simultaneously constrain the cluster mass distribution and dark energy equation of state. Combining our cosmological constraints with those from X-ray clusters and the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe 5-year data gives {\Omega}m = 0.25 +/- 0.05 and wx = -0.97 +/- 0.07 which are consistent with results from other methods. Inclusion of our method with all other techniques available brings down the current 2{\sigma} contours on the dark energy equation of state parameter wx by about 30%.
