Abstract:A significant improvement in reversible de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 doped with 2.5 wt % LiAlH4 and 2.5 wt % LiBH4 additives is achieved by reactive ball milling. Careful comparison studies show that a small amount (total mass ratio of <= 5 wt %) of LiBH4 and/or LiAlH4 can improve the hydrogen desorption performance of MgH2 in terms of reducing hydrogen desorption temperature, enhancing hydrogen desorption kinetics, and increasing hydrogen capacity. In particular, the MgH2 co-doped with LiAlH4-LiBH4 exhibits the best dehydrogenation properties, which starts to release hydrogen at about 280 degrees C and releases a high hydrogen capacity of 7.62 wt % with superior reaction kinetics. The activation energy of hydrogen desorption is decreased from 187.8 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 155.8 kJ/mol. It can also uptake 7.7 wt % H-2 within 15 min at 300 degrees C with a stable hydrogen absorption kinetics in the first 10 cycles. This synergistic effect of LiBH4 and LiAlH4 additives on improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties is attributed to the in situ formation of Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12, and MgAlB4 new phases acting as the "catalytic active sites" to facilitate the diffusion of hydrogen through the reaction barriers in the de/hydrogenation cycles of MgH2. Moreover, these new phases can be rehydrogenated into MgH2, LiBH4, and Li3AlH6 hydrides, which further enhance the hydrogen capacity of co-doped sample more than the theoretical capacity of primitive MgH2.
Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties and Mechanism of LiBH4–MgH2–Al Doped with NbF5Additive

Abstract:LiBH4 is one of the most potential candidates for hydrogen storage materials among several sorts of complex borohydrides. Utilizing reactive hydride composites on LiBH4 could destabilize the thermodynamics and improve dehydrogenation behaviors, such as the excellent reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2 and the fast dehydrogenation of LiBH4-Al. The strategy of combining both outstanding effects of MgH2 and AI to form LiBH4-MgH2-Al system has been proposed. However, reduction of hydrogen capacity during cycles has not been solved for the LiBH4-MgH2-Al system, which is considered as the principal problem. In this work, we investigated the reversible hydrogen storage performance and reaction mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al doped with/without NbF5 additive. It can be found that the dehydrogenation of 4LiBH(4)-MgH2-Al can release about 9.0 wt % H-2 quickly without incubation period, compared with 2LiBH(4)-MgH2. Moreover, it is the first time to achieve completely reversible hydrogen desorption property of LiBH4-MgH2-Al by doping with NbF5 and dehydrogenating under hydrogen back pressure in experiment. Microstructure analysis shows that the formation of Mg-Al alloys could result in the formation of Li2B12H12 and subsequently lead to the capacity degradation. With the additive NbF5, it shows a totally different pathway and a significant inhibition effect on the alloying between Mg and Al, leading to an improved de/rehydrogenation behavior without the byproduct Li2B12H12. Meanwhile, NbF5 could be hydrogenated into NbH2 and react with element B to form NbB2, promoting the reaction between Mg/Al metals and B element to form MgAlB4. On the other hand, those niobium compounds could facilitate the products MgAlB4 and LiH to be fully rehydrogenated into LiBH4, MgH2, and Al, which contributes to the complete reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2-Al. A better understanding of the capacity fade mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al system and the effects of additives might promote further development of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials.
Enhanced reversible hydrogen desorption properties and mechanism of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 -AlH 3 -LiH composite

Abstract:The Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH (x = 0, 0.5, 1) novel ternary composites have been synthesized through mechanical ball milling, their favorable dehydrogenation properties and mechanism have been experimentally investigated. It can be found that during ball milling, a slight amount of Mg(BH4)2 would react with LiH and transform into LiBH4, while most Mg(BH4)2 remained stable after ball milling. Two major dehydrogenation steps can be detected in the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite, which belong to the decomposition of AlH3 and Mg(BH4)2, respectively. Remarkably, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature of Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite can be reduced to 125.9 °C, with a total hydrogen desorption capacity of 10.3 wt%. It is worth emphasizing that the reversible dehydrogenation capacity is obviously improved to 3.8 wt%, compared to the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3 composite. This reversible capacity can be held for 3 cycles without obvious degeneration. Microstructural analysis on de/rehydrogenated composite has identified the regeneration of [BH4]- in Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-0.5LiH composite and revealed the role of LiH in the cycling hydrogen desorption and absorption processes. The formation of LiBH4 and MgH2 resulted from the rehydrogenation between MgAlB4 and LiH could be helpful for the stability of reversible hydrogen storage performance.

Abstract:To improve the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4, a novel hydrogen storage system, LiBH4-Li3AlH6, was synthesized by mechanical ball milling. The dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation properties of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 (molar rato: 1: 1) composites were studied via thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental results show that the hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt% and that the whole dehydrogenation is a three-step process: (1) a decomposition reaction Li3AlH6 -> 3LiH + Al + 3/2H(2), occurring at 160 degrees C; (2) formation of an intermediate product from 300 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and then subsequent transformation into Al, AlB2, and H-2. (2LiBH(4) + Al -> [Li2B2AlH4] -> x(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)) + (1-x) [Li2B2AlH4], (0 < x < 1)); and (3) final dehydrogenation of LiH + Al -> LiAl + 1/2H(2), occurring at 415 degrees C, with sequential decomposition of the remaining intermediate ((1-x)[Li2B2AlH4]->(1-x)(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)), (0 < x < 1)). In-situ Synthesis of Amorphous Mg(BH4)2 and Chloride Composite Modified by NbF5 for Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties

Abstract:The solvent-free amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) composite was in-situ synthesized by ball milling LiBH4 and MgCl2. It is found that the onset dehydrogenation temperature of the as synthesized composite is 126.9 degrees C, which is roughly 156 degrees C lower than that of pristine Mg(BH4)(2). The activation energy of the amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) and pristine Mg(BH4)(2) for the first dehydrogenation step was calculated as 120.01 kJ/mol and 487.99 kJ/mol, respectively. Hence the kinetics improvement is certified by the lower Ea value of the dehydrogenation process. When adding NbF5 into the composite, the catalyzed composite exhibits better hydrogen storage properties compared to pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The catalyzed composite starts to release hydrogen at proximately 120 degrees C with a total capacity of 10.04 wt %. The reversibility of the catalyzed composite is also improved. The capacity of the catalyzed composite at the second cycle is 5.5 wt%. For the third and fourth cycles the catalyzed composite can still liberate 4 wt% H-2. Besides, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature during four cycles are extremely lower than those of pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The peaks of the intermediate MgB12H12 is detected by FTIR as the regenerated hydrogenation product in the catalyzed composite. It can be speculated from the detailed analysis that there are mainly three reasons for the improved properties. Firstly, the additive NbF5 is favorable to enhance the hydrogen storage properties by modifying the dehydrogenation path and producing MgF2 and NbB2 as new products. Secondly, the in-situ formation of amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) is likely to improve the dehydrogenation properties of the samples due to its different reactivity comparing to crystal ones. Abstract:In this paper ,LiBH4 was ball-milled respectively with Al powder ,LiAlH4 and Li3 AlH6 as the Al source to form hydrogen storage composites .T he effects of Al source on the hydrogen storage proper-ties of LiBH4 were systematically investigated by phase analysis of hydriding/dehydriding process and hy-drogen desorption/absorption properties measurements of LiBH4/Al ,LiBH4/LiAlH4 and LiBH4/Li3 AlH6 composites .It was found that the active Al formed by decoposition of Li3 AlH6 showed eminent improve-ments on the hydrogen decomposition of LiBH4 ,and its dehydrided product showed the best reversible hy-driding kinetics .

Abstract:On-site on-demand hydrogen generation from a new Mg-LiBH4-AlCl3 system has been established. The hydrogen yield, mHGR (maximum hydrogen generation rate) and reaction stability can be adjusted by changing the samples' compositions, milling time and water/mixture ratios. The Mg-9 wt.%LiBH4-1 wt.% AlCl3 composite reaches a conversion yield of 87%, corresponding to 1083.5 ml H-2 g(-1) (composite), and the mHGR is 1256.9 ml min(-1) g(-1) in 60 min at 298 K. The synergistic effect between Mg and LiBH4 as well as the catalytic effects of LiBH4-AlCl3 additives both contribute to the improved hydrolytic performances. Compared with the hydrolysis of single Mg or Mg-LiBH4 system, the Mg-LiBH4-AlCl3 mixture has greatly improved its hydrogen yield and mHGR. Abstract:The mechanism and hydrogen absorption/desorption properties of LiAlH4+xMgH2 (where x=1, 2.5, and 4) composites have been investigated. With the combination of MgH2 and LiAlH4 by mechanical grinding, initial decomposition temperatures of the mixtures can be reduced by about 50°C. Mechanical grinding treatment makes MgH2 react with LiAlH4 to release a certain amount of hydrogen. The final resultants of the composites after thermal decomposition contain Al12Mg17. Intermetallic Al12Mg17 hydrogenated into Al2Mg3, MgH2 and Al firstly, intermediate Al2Mg3 then transforms into MgH2 and Al in the subsequent hydriding process. Hydrogenation of intermediate Al2Mg3 is supposed to occur synchronously to that of Al12Mg17, therefore demarcation of the two hydrogenation processes is ambiguous. Al12Mg17 can be totally recovered by complete dehydriding. Formation of Al12Mg17 alters the reaction pathway of LiAlH4+xMgH2 (where x=1, 2.5, and 4) systems and improves their thermodynamic properties. The dehydrogenation process of LiAlH4+xMgH2 (x=1, 2.5, and 4) composites contain two stages, their maximum desorption capacity reaches 7.46wt.%.

Abstract:2LiBH(4)/MgH2 hydrogen storage composite was prepared by ball-milling technology, and its microstructures and hydrogen storage properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and hydrogen storage measurements. The effects of Ce-based catalysts on the hydrogen storage properties of the composite were studied. The results show that hydrogen release of 2LiBH(4)/MgH2 composite is a two-step process, i.e., the first is the decomposition of MgH2 and the second is the reaction between LiBH4 and Mg just produced. Ce or CeF3 addition can improve the dehydrogenation of 2LiBH(4)/MgH2 composite. Ce mainly improves the behavior of the second step reaction while CeF3 influences the behavior of the two steps greatly. For the 2LiBH(4)/MgH2 composite with addition of 5 mol% CeF3, the total hydrogen capacity reaches 10.6 wt% at 450 degrees C and the initial hydrogen release temperature is decreased by around 100 degrees C. LiBH1-xFx is formed by partial substitution of F- for H-, which decreases the decomposition temperature of LiBH4.

Abstract:LiBH4/Li3AlH6 hydrogen storage composite was prepared by ball-milling, and its hydrogen storage properties and mechanism were studied by TG/DSC/MS and XRD analysis. The activation energies of the dehydrogenation reactions were calculated. The experimental results show that LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite dehydrogenates shows three reactions: (1) Li3AlH6 decomposes with hydrogen desorption and formation of Al; (2) part of Al reacts with LBH4 with hydrogen desorption; (3) Al reacts with LiH. The total hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt%. And the mechanism of hydrogen desorption process of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite was discussed.

Abstract:To obtain promising materials for hydrogen storage, a composite of Li3AlH6 and LiNH2 with molar ratio of 1:2 was prepared by ball-milling, and its hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The microstructures of the composite after hydrogen desorption/absorption were characterized by XRD and FTIR analysis. The results show that 0.65wt% H2 was released during ball-milling process and 5.97wt% H2 was desorbed when the post-milled composite was heated from room temperature to 450°C. The total hydrogen desorption capacity reached 6.62wt%. And no NH3 is detected by the mass spectrum (MS) analysis over dehydrogenation process. The hydrogen desorption process of Li3AlH6/2LiNH2 composite occurs according to the following reaction: Li3AlH6+2LiNH2→Li3AIN2+2LiH+4H2. Furthermore, 3.57wt% H2 can be reabsorbed at 400°C and under hydrogen pressure of 110bar.

Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 reactive hydride composites for reversible hydrogen storage were investigated by comparing with the 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 composite in the present work. The dehydrogenation pathway and reaction mechanism of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite were also investigated and elucidated. The self-decomposition of Mg2FeH6 leads to the in situ formation of Mg and Fe particles on the surface of LiBH4, resulting in a well dispersion between different reacting phases. The formation of FeB is observed during the dehydrogenation of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite, which might supplies nucleation sites of MgB2 during the dehydrogenation process, but is not an ascendant catalyst for the self-decomposition of LiBH4. And FeB can also transform to the LiBH4 and Fe by reacting with LiH and H-2 during the rehydrogenation process. The dehydrogenation capacity for 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite still gets to 6.5 wt% even after four cycles. The X-ray diffraction analyses reveal the phase transitions during the hydriding and dehydriding cycle. The formed FeB in the composite maintains a nano-structure after four hydriding-dehydriding cycles. The loss of hydrogen storage capacity and de-/rehydrogenation kinetics can be attributed to the incomplete generation of Mg2FeH6 during the rehydrogenation process. Effect of Salts Addition on the Hydrogen Generation of Al–LiH Composite Elaborated by Ball Milling

Abstract:Hydrogen generation from ball milled Al-LiH-salts mixture is studied. Different salts are used to test their effects on the hydrolysis properties of Al-LiH composite. KCl is found to be more effective than other salts and shows the best performance. Raising initial reaction temperature can effectively improve hydrogen yield and HG (hydrogen generation) rate of the Al-LiH-KCl mixture. Optimizing the milling conditions is necessary to improve the hydrogen generation performances of the composites. The addition amounts of KCl and LiH are varied and 10 mol% proves to be the optimum value for both of them in this work. Too much addition of LiH or KCl will cause the decrease of the hydrogen yield. A proper milling time of 10 h is discovered in this work which is beneficial for the decrease of grain size and improvement of reactivity. The 10 h milled Al-10 mol%LiH-10 mol% KCl mixture reaches a hydrogen yield of 97.1% in 10 min at 60 degrees C. Preliminary mechanism for the improvement has been discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:2LiBH(4) + MgH2 system is considered as an attractive candidate for reversible hydrogen storage with high capacity and favorable thermodynamics. However, its reaction kinetics has to be further improved for the practical application. In this work, we investigated the effect of NbCl5 additive on the de/hydrogenation kinetics and microstructure refinement in 2LiH-MgB2 composite systematically. The hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics of 2LiH-MgB2 composite can be significantly enhanced with the increase of NbCl5 content. The 3 mol% NbCl5 doped 2LiH-MgB2 composite exhibits the superior reversible hydrogen storage performance, which requires 50 min to uptake 9.0 wt% H-2 at 350 degrees C and release 8.5 wt% H-2 at 400 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, the undoped 2LiH-MgB2 sample uptakes 6.2 wt% H-2 and releases 3.1 wt% H-2 under identical measurement conditions. Moreover, the 3 mol% NbCl5 doped 2LiH-MgB2 composite can release more than 9.0 wt% H-2 within 300 min at 400 degrees C without obvious degradation of capacity over the first 10 cycles. Microstructure analyses clearly indicate that NbCl5 additive first reacts with LiH to form Nb and LiCl during ball-milling process, and then NbH is formed after the first hydrogenation and stabilized upon further de/hydrogenation cycling. The well-distributed NbH active species play an important role in the improvement of de/hydrogenation kinetics for Li-Mg-B-H system through facilitating hydrogen diffusion rapidly as well as prevent the particles from further growth in the subsequent hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes. Abstract:Hydrogen has become a promising energy source due to its efficient and renewable properties. Although promising, hydrogen energy has not been in widespread use due to the lack of high-performance materials for hydrogen storage. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Al-based compounds to LiBH4 can create composites that have good properties for hydrogen storage. In this work, the dehydrogenation performances of different composite systems of 2LiBH4+ M (M = Al, LiAlH4, Li3AlH6) were investigated. The results show that, under a ball to powder ratio of 25:1 and a rotation speed of 300 rpm, the optimum ball milling time is 50 h for synthesizing Li3AlH6 from LiH and LiAlH4. The three studied systems destabilized LiBH4 at relatively low temperatures, and the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite demonstrated excellent behavior. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry results, pure LiBH4 released hydrogen at 469°C. The dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 is 416°C for 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 versus 435°C for 2LiBH4-LiAlH4 and 445°C for 2LiBH4-Al. The 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6, 2LiBH4-LiAlH4, and 2LiBH4-Al samples released 9.1, 8, and 5.7 wt.% of H2, respectively. Additionally, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite released the 9.1 wt.% H2 within 150 min. An increase in the kinetics was achieved. From the results, it was concluded that 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 exhibits the best dehydrogenation performance. Therefore, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite is considered a promising hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:Herein, an initial attempt to understand the relationships between hydrogen storage properties, reaction pathways, and material compositions in LiBH4-xMg(AlH4)(2) composites is demonstrated. The hydrogen storage properties and the reaction pathways for hydrogen release from LiBH4-xMg(AlH4)(2) composites with x=1/6, 1/4, and 1/2 were systematically investigated. All of the composites exhibit a four-step dehydrogenation event upon heating, but the pathways for hydrogen desorption/absorption are varied with decreasing LiBH4/Mg(AlH4)(2) molar ratios. Thermodynamic and kinetic investigations reveal that different x values lead to different enthalpy changes for the third and fourth dehydrogenation steps and varied apparent activation energies for the first, second, and third dehydrogenation steps. Thermodynamic and kinetic destabilization caused by the presence of Mg(AlH4)(2) is likely to be responsible for the different hydrogen desorption/absorption performances of the LiBH4-xMg(AlH4)(2) composites.
Improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4 by AlH3 addition

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) possesses a very high hydrogen capacity (18.5 wt%) but suffers from high thermal stability. In this work, the as-prepared aluminium hydride (AlH3) was ball milled with LiBH4 forming 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4. Hydrogen desorption measurements showed that a hydrogen capacity of 11.2 wt% is obtained from the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite and the desorption temperature of LiBH4 with AlH3 addition is reduced by more than 30 °C. AlH3 is better as an Al source than the as-received Al in that the hydrogen desorption extent of AlH3-doped LiBH4 reaches 70%, while it is 54% and 61% for the pure LiBH4 and the Al-doped LiBH4. This is due to the brittle and oxide-free nature of AlH3. Microstructure investigations showed that during heating process, the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite undergoes AlH3 decomposition forming Al* and releasing hydrogen, followed by the decomposition of LiBH4. LiBH4 will react with Al* forming AlB2 and LiAlB compounds during its decomposition, which contributes to the improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4.
Synergetic Effects of in Situ Formed CaH2 and LiBH4 on Hydrogen Storage Properties of the Li-Mg-N-H System.

Abstract:Hydrogen storage properties and mechanisms of the Ca(BH(4))(2)-doped Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system are systematically investigated. It is found that a metathesis reaction between Ca(BH(4))(2) and LiH readily occurs to yield CaH(2) and LiBH(4) during ball milling. The Mg(NH(2))(2) -2LiH-0.1Ca(BH(4))(2) composite exhibits optimal hydrogen storage properties as it can reversibly store more than 4.5 wt% of H(2) with an onset temperature of about 90 °C for dehydrogenation and 60 °C for rehydrogenation. Isothermal measurements show that approximately 4.0 wt% of H(2) is rapidly desorbed from the Mg(NH(2))(2) -2LiH-0.1Ca(BH(4))(2) composite within 100 minutes at 140 °C, and rehydrogenation can be completed within 140 minutes at 105 °C and 100 bar H(2). In comparison with the pristine sample, the apparent activation energy and the reaction enthalpy change for dehydrogenation of the Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH-0.1Ca(BH(4))(2) composite are decreased by about 16.5% and 28.1%, respectively, and thus are responsible for the lower operating temperature and the faster dehydrogenation/hydrogenation kinetics. The fact that the hydrogen storage performances of the Ca(BH(4))(2)-doped sample are superior to the individually CaH(2)- or LiBH(4)-doped samples suggests that the in situ formed CaH(2) and LiBH(4) provide a synergetic effect on improving the hydrogen storage properties of the Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system.

Abstract:A Mg(BH4)(2)-added Mg(NH2)(2)-2LiH system was prepared by ball milling the corresponding chemicals. The hydrogen storage properties of the Mg(NH2)(2)-2LiH-xMg(BH4)(2) (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) samples and the role played by Mg(BH4)(2) were systematically investigated. The results show that the onset and peak temperatures for hydrogen desorption from the Mg(BH4)(2)-added Mg(NH2)(2)-2LiH sample shifted to lower temperatures. In particular, the Mg(NH2)(2)-2LiH-0.1Mg(BH4)(2) sample could reversibly absorb similar to 4.5 wt% of hydrogen in the temperature range of 120-150 degrees C, which is superior to the pristine sample. During ball milling, a metathesis reaction between Mg(BH4)(2) and LiH readily occurred to form LiBH4 and MgH2 and subsequently, the newly formed MgH2 reacted with Mg(NH2)(2) to generate MgNH. Upon heating, the presence of LiBH4 not only decreased the recrystallization temperature of Mg(NH2)(2) but also reacted with LiNH2 to form the Li-4(BH4)(NH2)(3) intermediate, which weakens the N-H bonding and enhances the ion conductivity. Meanwhile, MgNH may act as the nucleation center for the dehydrogenation product of Li2MgN2H2 due to the structural similarity. Thus, the in situ formed LiBH4 and MgNH provide a synergetic effect to improve the hydrogen storage performances of the Mg(NH2)(2)-2LiH system.
