Abstract:A series of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) conjugated molecules based on naphthalene diimide dimers bridged with different pi-conjugated heterocyclic units (NDI-pi-NDI) have been designed and synthesized. By an ingenious design strategy, the LUMO (the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) of the NDI-based small molecules is well controlled to a relatively constant value of -3.8 to -3.9 eV, whereas their HOMO (the highest occupied molecular orbital) could be tuned over a wide range, from -6.5 eV (compound 1) to -5.5 eV (compound 5), leading to varied band gaps from 2.6 eV to 1.5 eV. Organic field-effect transistor (OFET) characterization of these NDI-pi-NDI molecules shows that compounds 1, 2, and 3 have good n-type semiconducting properties in a N-2 atmosphere with the maximum electron mobilities up to 0.15 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), 0.46 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 0.57 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. Compounds 4 and 5, due to the high-lying HOMO levels and reduced energy band gaps, have ambipolar semiconducting properties and OFETs based on 5 show the highest electron and hole mobilities up to 1.23 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 0.0074 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. Moreover, the performances are enhanced under thermal treatment because of the increased crystallinity as evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The easily tunable electronic energy levels make the NDI-based semiconductors promising n-channel and ambipolar components in organic devices.
Conjugated Donor-Acceptor Copolymers from Dicyanated Naphthalene Diimide

Abstract:A series of donor-acceptor (D-A) alternating copolymers including P(2CNNDI-T), P(2CNNDI-TT), P(2CNNDI-BT), and P(2CNNDI-BDT) based on dicyanated naphthalene diimide (2CN-NDI) in backbones were presented and characterized in this contribution. Their structures were unambiguously identified by NMR spectra. Optical and electrochemical measurements revealed that their LUMO energy levels are substantially lowered at about -4.4 eV by the substitution of electron-deficient cyano groups on the backbone of as-synthesized polymers. And the HOMO levels varied from -6.15 eV to -5.70 eV as a reflection of electron-donating ability of combined thiophene derivatives. The moderate electron-transporting characteristics under ambient conditions based on these dicyanated polymers indicated their promising applications as air-stable electron transporting semiconductors in future electronics. Dithiazole-Fused Naphthalene Diimides Toward New N-Type Semiconductors

Abstract:A simple synthetic approach to dithiazole-fused naphthalene diimides 1 and 2 from 2,6-dibromoNDI (2BrNDI) was described. Note that the synthesis did not involve any metallic catalysts. Based on their cyclic voltammograms, the LUMO energies of 1 and 2 were estimated to be -3.99 eV and -3.98 eV, respectively, being lower than that of unsubstituted NDI. Thin films of 1 and 2 show n-type semiconducting behaviors. OFETs of 1 exhibit electron mobility up to 0.15 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) with high on/off ratio (under ambient conditions) after annealing.
Naphthalene Diimide-Embedded Donor-Acceptor Carbon Nanohoops: Photophysical, Photoconductive and Charge Transport Properties

Abstract:Designing the architecture of donor−acceptor (D−A) pairs is an effective strategy to tailor the electronic structure of conjugated macrocycles for optoelectronic devices. Herein, we present the synthesis of three D−A nanohoops NDI-[n]CPP (n=7, 8, 9) containing naphthalene diimide (NDI) unit as an acceptor and [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) moieties as donors. The D−A characteristics of NDI-[7~9]CPPs were substantiated through absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies, electrochemical investigations and computational analysis. The device investigations demonstrated that the D-A nanohoops NDI-[7~9]CPPs can serve as the photoconductive layer and demonstrate a significant generation of photocurrent with fast response upon exposure to light. The magnitude of photocurrent shows highly dependence on the size of their rings, with an increasing trendency as the ring size decreases. The generation of photocurrent in free acceptor-based CPP has rarely been reported in the previous literatures. Significantly, the C60 complexes of NDI-[7~9]CPPs exhibited a marked enhancement in photocurrent under identical conditions, in particular, the photocurrent of C60NDI-[7]CPP is ca 3.5 times greater than that of NDI-[7]CPP alone. Furthermore, the potential applications of NDI-[7~9]CPPs in electron- and hole-transport devices have been also explored, revealing the clear evidence of their bipolar behavior as an active charge transport layer.

Abstract:Efficient n-type doping remains a significant challenge in the field of organic thermoelectric materials, despite the documentation of several n-dopants. In this work, a new solution-processable n-type dopant (Py-DMBI) featuring a pyrene unit was synthesized and investigated, with the intention to improve the miscibility of the dopant and naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based conjugated polymer by utilization of the specific interaction between pyrene and the naphthalene diimide units. The results reveal that Py-DMBI shows improved charge-generation efficiency ( i.e. the ratio of the number of generated charge carriers to the number of dopant molecules) toward the NDI based conjugated copolymer (PNDI2TEG-2Tz) in comparison with 4-((1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1 H -benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethyl-amine (N-DMBI), which is a widely used n-dopant. The Py-DMBI doped PNDI2TEG-2Tz exhibits a maximum power factor of 15.7 μW m −1 K −2 with a conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of up to 3.5 S cm −1 and −211 μV K −1 , respectively.

Electron-Transporting Conjugated Polymers from Novel Aromatic Five-Membered Diimides: Naphtho[1,2- b :4,3- b ′]-dithiophene and -Diselenophene Diimides

Abstract:Despite the important advances in high-mobility electron-transporting polymers built from aromatic six- and seven-membered diimides, aromatic five-membered diimide (AFMDI)-containing polymers rarely access satisfactory n-type or ambipolar performance. Herein, a UV-photocyclization protocol is applied to create two novel AFMDI units, named as dibrominated naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b′]dithiophene diimides (NDTI-2Br) and dibrominated naphtho[1,2-b:4,3-b′]diselenophene diimides (NDSI-2Br). Both NDTI- and NDSI-based small molecules are demonstrated to possess not only a highly π-extended conjugation backbone but also high electron deficiency and low-lying energies of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO, as low as −3.74 eV), which is due to the incorporation of two electron-poor imide units into the fused-ring parent cores. With these attractive properties, we further disclose their applications in the construction of four novel conjugated copolymers, including NDTI and NDSI derivative acceptors coupled with a weak electron-donating vinyl unit (P1 and P2) or linked with the 4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole unit (P3 and P4). It is found that the backbone structure, optical property, electronic structure (energy levels and band gap), and charge transport property of the resulting polymers are fine-tuned by regulating the copolymerization units or sulfur/selenium heteroatoms embedded in the acceptor units. All the polymers display a near-coplanar conjugation backbone, outstanding thermal stability (T d > 460 °C), and desirable reduction waves coupled with low-lying LUMO energies below −3.78 eV. Investigation of charge transport properties indicates that P1 and P2 show typical unipolar n-type characteristics with the highest electron mobility of 0.01 cm2 V–1 s–1, while P3 and P4 exhibit balanced ambipolar charge transport properties, with the maximum hole and electron mobilities of 2.0 × 10–4 and 0.005 cm2 V–1 s–1, respectively. The electron mobility (0.01 cm2 V–1 s–1) observed here can be compared to the classical n-type semiconductor PCBM (∼10–3 cm2 V–1 s–1), which is sufficient for electron transport to the electrode in the all-polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Two novel donor-acceptor pi-conjugated polymers based on naphthodipyrrolidone (NDP) were synthesized and characterized. The polymers possess low band gaps and suitable molecular orbital levels as ambipolar semiconductors. The thin film organic field effect transistor of NDP polymers exhibited ambipolar transport properties with a high electron mobility up to 0.67 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). The grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) studies demonstrated that the polymer molecules pack into a long-range-ordered lamellar structure with isotropically oriented crystalline domains. Thermal annealing promoted edge-on lamellar stacking as evidenced by the increased diffraction intensity along the out-of-plane direction. The polymer with NDP and bithiophene units achieved the best edge-on lamellar stacking after thermal annealing, which yielded the best electron transport performance in this work.
A New Type of Light-Emitting Naphtho[2,3-C][1,2,5] Thiadiazole Derivatives: Synthesis, Photophysical Characterization and Transporting Properties

Abstract:We report a new series of naphtho[2,3-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (NTD) derivatives which present both carrier transporting property and high fluorescence quantum yield. Optical absorption and emission property, film morphology and thermal stability of these compounds have been investigated. Due to the absence of a strong donor group in the molecular structure, intermolecular dipole–dipole interaction and concentration quenching are effectively suppressed. The emission color was found to be adjustable depending on the aryl substituents at the 4,9-position of the NTD chromophore. Single crystals of 4-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl-substituted NTD (1) and biphenyl-substituted NTD (3) were obtained and determined by X-ray crystallography. It was found that 1, 3 and 2-naphthalene-substituted NTD (5) show ambipolar transporting property with almost identical hole and electron mobilities. Notably, 1 shows extremely high transporting ability, whose hole and electron mobilities were measured to be 7.16 × 10−4 and 6.19 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1 at an electric field of 2.0 × 105 V cm−1, respectively. Theoretical calculations showed 1, 3 and 5 have similar reorganization energies for holes and electrons, and holes and electrons would both hop between the adjacent NTD chromophores, resulting in the ambipolar transporting property. Double-layer non-doped devices were fabricated with some of the NTD derivatives, and the correlations between device performance and molecular structure were also discussed.

Abstract:Two naphthalene diimide-based (NDI-based) complexes, [Cd(AlaNDI)(NH 2 -BDC) 0.5 (H 2 O)]·(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ( 1 ) and [Cd(AlaNDI)(BDC) 0.5 (H 2 O)]·(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ·(CH 3 ) 2 NH ( 2 ) (AlaNDI = N , N ′-bis( L -alanine)naphthalenediimide, H 2 BDC = terephthalic acid, NH 2 –H 2 BDC = 2-amino terephthalic acid), were successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy techniques. Structural analysis showed that the packing structures of the complexes were assembled with the subunit Cd 2 (AlaNDI) 2 connected by BDC or NH 2 -BDC moiety, forming an interspersed two-dimensional structure. In order to investigate the effect of uncoordinated amino groups in the complexes, structural comparisons and functional properties of iodine adsorption, photochromism, and photocatalysis were explored. Photocatalytic studies showed that both the complexes have good potential for photocatalytic degradation activity of various dyes, particularly for cationic dye crystal violet (CV), basic saffron (SFT), malachite green (MG), and methyl violet (MV). We found that the photocatalytic active species may be related to h + and ̇OH.

Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers comprising electron-deficient aromatic dicarboximide units represent an important type of organic semiconductors, especially for electron transporting properties. Pyrene-1,5,6,10-tetracarboxyl diimide (PyDI), a new PAH dicarboximide molecule recently reported by us, provides a fine balance between the electron-stabilizing ability and π -stacking tendency, as compared to the naphthalenediimide (NDI) and perylenediimide (PDI) analogues. In this study, using thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (TVT) and biselenophene (BS) as the electron donating comonomer, along with PyDI as the acceptor moiety, we develop two new D-A type conjugated polymers, which exhibit impressive electron-transporting performance. Specifically, in the solution-processed OFET devices, electron mobility of 0.18 and 0.20 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 are achieved with these polymers, respectively. Such findings further prove the optimal potential of PyDI for application as an electron-acceptor building block in the development of polymeric n -type semiconductors among all various high-performance functional D-A polymers.

Abstract:2D polymers (2DPs) are promising as structurally well-defined, permanently porous, organic semiconductors. However, 2DPs are nearly always isolated as closed shell organic species with limited charge carriers, which leads to low bulk conductivities. Here, the bulk conductivity of two naphthalene diimide (NDI)-containing 2DP semiconductors is enhanced by controllably n-doping the NDI units using cobaltocene (CoCp2 ). Optical and transient microwave spectroscopy reveal that both as-prepared NDI-containing 2DPs are semiconducting with sub-2 eV optical bandgaps and photoexcited charge-carrier lifetimes of tens of nanoseconds. Following reduction with CoCp2 , both 2DPs largely retain their periodic structures and exhibit optical and electron-spin resonance spectroscopic features consistent with the presence of NDI-radical anions. While the native NDI-based 2DPs are electronically insulating, maximum bulk conductivities of >10-4 S cm-1 are achieved by substoichiometric levels of n-doping. Density functional theory calculations show that the strongest electronic couplings in these 2DPs exist in the out-of-plane (π-stacking) crystallographic directions, which indicates that cross-plane electronic transport through NDI stacks is primarily responsible for the observed electronic conductivity. Taken together, the controlled molecular doping is a useful approach to access structurally well-defined, paramagnetic, 2DP n-type semiconductors with measurable bulk electronic conductivities of interest for electronic or spintronic devices.

Core-Expanded Naphthalene Diimides-Vinylogous Tetrathia-fulvalenes Toward Ambipolar Organic Semiconductors

Abstract:In comparison with the combination of p- and n-type organic semiconductors, the way to construct logic complementary circuits by ambipolar organic semiconductors has obvious advantages. However, so far, the ambipolar ones with high performance are still scarce. In this work, a series of benzo six-membered nitrogen/oxygen/sulfur heterocycles core-substituted naphthalene diimides-vinylogous tetrathiafulvalene (NDI-VTTF) derivatives 1 similar to 5 were designed by energy level regulation strategy. Subsequently, bottom-gate and top-contact organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on compounds 1 similar to 5 were fabricated and systematically studied. The results showed that all the OFET devices exhibit ambipolar semiconducting behaviors, among them the OFET devices based on compounds 1 , 3 similar to 5 displayed electron-dominated ambipolar charge transport characteristics, while the devices based on compound 2 showed balanced ambipolar charge transport features. Due to the improvement of thin-film crystallinity and morphology by thermal annealing treatment, the performance of OFETs based on compounds 1 similar to 5 was improved with the increase of thermal annealing temperature. When thermal annealed at 180 degrees C, OFETs based on compound 2 showed the balanced electron and hole mobilities of up to 0.037 and 0.050 cm(2)center dot V-1 center dot s(-1), respectively.
Electron Density Effect of Aromatic Carboxylic Acids in Naphthalenediimide-Based Coordination Polymers: from Thermal Electron Transfer and Charge Transfer to Photoinduced Electron Transfer.

Abstract:Various naphthalenediimide (NDI) based electron donor-acceptor coordination polymers (D-A CPs) have been constructed and used to explore charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) behaviors. Up to now, significant progress has been made in the interface contact and electron donor-acceptor ability matching mechanism, while the electronic density effect of the electron donors on the CT and ET behaviors is still not known. Herein, two NDI-based D-A CPs, [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA)2(H2O)2] (1) and [Cd2(H2NDI)(IPA-OH)2(H2O)2] (2), are constructed using an NDI-based ligand and two aromatic carboxylic acid ligands (H2NDI = 2,7-bis(3,5-dimethyl) dipyrazol-1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxydiimide, H2IPA = isophthalic acid; and H2IPA-OH = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid). UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations analyses reveal that the occurrence of themal electron transfer (TET) in 1 and 2 results from the HOMO of the IPA and IPA-OH lying higher than the LUMO of the NDI. Meanwhile, compared to 1, the UV-vis absorption spectrum of 2 exhibits a significant red shift, which suggests higher electron density of the donor and more electron transfer pathways are beneficial for the occurrence of intermolecular CT. After UV light irradiation, the comparison of the photochromic behavior of 1 and 2 confirms the negative effect of the stronger CT on photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The present study illustrates the delicate modulating effect of electron density on the CT and ET behaviors in D-A CPs.

Abstract:Naphthalene diimides (NDIs) are a family of the organic dyes with excellent electron accepting abilities, which have attracted great interest due to their widespread applications in many fields. In this work, a protonated NDI derivative was used with different metal halides to construct two inorganic-organic hybrid compounds, (H2DPMNI)·(Cu4I6)·(CH3CN) (1), and (H2DPMNI)·(Pb2I6)·(DMF) (2) where DPMNI is N,N′-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide. These compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure analysis revealed that the compounds 1 and 2 were built from one-dimensional metal halides attached by protonated DPMNI via C-H···anion and anion-π interactions. Due to the facilitated electron transfers between one-dimensional metal halides and protonated DPMNI components, compounds 1 and 2 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activities for degrading RhB in the presence of visible light radiation. This work provides a new way for the design and synthesis of diverse new types of photocatalytic hybrid materials.

Naphthalenediimide-Based Copolymers Incorporating Vinyl-Linkages for High-Performance Ambipolar Field-Effect Transistors and Complementary-Like Inverters under Air

Abstract:We report the synthesis of two novel donoracceptor copolymers poly{[N, N'-bis(alkyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide-2,6-diyl-alt-5,5'-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,2'-(E)-2-(2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)thiophene]} (PNVTs) based on naphthalenediimide (NDI) acceptor and (E)-2-(2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)thiophene donor. The incorporations of vinyl linkages into polymer backbones maintain the energy levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbits at -3.90 eV, therefore facilitating the electron injection. Moreover, the energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbits increase from -5.82 to -5.61 eV, successfully decreasing the hole injection barrier. Atomic force microscopy measurements indicate that PNVTs thin films exhibit larger polycrystalline grains compared with that of poly{[N, N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide-2,6-diyl]-alt- 5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} [P(NDI2OD-T2)], consistent with the stronger pi-pi stacking measured by grazing incidence X-ray scatting. To optimize devices performance, field-effect transistors (FETs) with three devices configurations have been investigated. The results indicate that the electron mobility of the vinyl-containing PNVTs exhibit about 35 times higher than that of P(NDI2OD-T2). Additionally, the vinyl-linkages in PNVTs remarkably enhance ambipolar transport of their top-gate FETs, obtaining high hole and electron mobilities of 0.30 and 1.57 cm(2) V1 s1, respectively, which are among the highest values reported to date for the NDI-based polymers. Most importantly, ambipolar inverters have been realized in ambient, exhibiting a high gain of 155. These results provide important progresses in solution-processed ambipolar polymeric FETs and complementary-like inverters.
Charge Transport in Sub‐Monolayer Networks of a Naphthalene‐Diimide‐Based Copolymer

Abstract:Charge transport in sub‐monolayer networks of the semiconducting polymer P(NDI2OD‐T2) is found to be determined by network interconnectivity and orientational order and not solely by surface coverage. Below 40% surface coverage a strong decrease in current is observed which is connected to a decrease in branching point density, a decrease in orientational order, and an increase in the density of dead ends. Sub‐monolayer networks of the electron‐transporting semiconducting polymer poly([N,N'‐bis(2‐octyldodecyl)‐naphthalene‐1,4,5,8‐bis(dicarboximide)−2,6‐diyl]‐alt‐5,5′‐(2,2′‐bithiophene)) (P(NDI2OD‐T2)) are realized through judicious choice of spin‐coating solvent and control of solution concentration. These sub‐monolayer networks provide a platform to study the effects of surface coverage, network connectivity, and orientational order on charge transport. It is found that charge transport through semiconducting polymer networks depends not only on the coverage/concentration of the material but also on the nature of the conduction paths themselves. Down to 40% surface coverage, current measured in a field‐effect architecture decreases in line with the decrease in surface coverage, but drops precipitously below a surface coverage of 40%. Below 40% surface coverage, there is a marked decrease in network connectivity (quantified through the branching point density) and a decrease in orientational order. Furthermore, an increase in the density of dangling branches (dead ends) is also seen with decreasing surface coverage. Additional supporting data in the form of grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS), optical spectroscopy, and charge modulation spectroscopy are presented, which help to establish that long‐range interconnectivity rather than local morphology dominates charge transport in P(NDI2OD‐T2) sub‐monolayers as well as thin films.

Abstract:A cross-dipole π-π close-stacking of 1,7-diphenylazophenol (Pap) perylene diimides (PDI, DPPDIs) formed in a single-crystal integrating good ambipolar charge transport and aggregation-induced fluorescence emission (AIE) behaviors has been unveiled. The weak electron donating and large steric hindrance effect of bulk Paps endows DPPDIs with crossed D-A-D structures, which facilitates the charge injection of both electrons and holes and a distinct cross-dipole π-π close-packing with the distance of only 3.29 Å. Accordingly, the wave function overlaps and electronic coupling of PDI cores are significantly enhanced to provide a quasi-1D charge transport channel, resulting in ambipolar performance with the hole and electron mobility up to 6.74 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and 5.96 cm 2 V −1 s −1 respectively. Moreover, it also exhibits AIE behaviors due to the weak transition dipole resonance induced by the cross-dipole stacking with a large rotationa angle of 79.8° and restriction of intramolecular rotation of the bulk Paps. This work initially provides a promising strategy for achieving both ambipolar charge transport and AIE performance on account of the D-A-D molecules with crossed conformations at the molecular level and an efficient π-overlaps induced by cross-dipole stacking at the supramolecular level.

Abstract:We studied charge transport phenomena through a core substituted naphthalenediimide (NDI) single-molecule junctions using the electrochemical STM-based break junction technique in combination with DFT calculations. The conductance switch among three well-defined states is acquired by electrochemically controlling the redox state of the pendent diimide unit of the molecule in ionic liquid, and the conductance difference is more than one order of magnitude between di-anion states and neutral state. The potential dependent charge transport characteristics of the NDI molecules are confirmed by DFT calculations accounting for electrochemical double-layer effects on the conductance of the NDI junctions. This work suggests that the integration of redox unit in the pendent position with strong coupling to molecular backbone can significantly tune the charge transport of the single-molecule device by controlling different redox states.
