A Multilevel Model of How and when Team-Level Abusive Supervision Diminishes Team Member Voice

Abstract:Challenging prior assumptions that abusive supervision and its consequences are contained within isolated supervisor-subordinate dyads, this study examines the impact of team-level abusive supervision (the overall level of abuse reported by team members) and its multilevel implications for diminishing a constructive form of resisting abuse ¨C team member voice. Drawing on theories pertaining to the social impact of abusive supervision on individuals and collectives, we propose two mediated pathways by which team-level abusive supervision affects team member voice. We then utilize dyadic and situational theories of relative power to identify boundary conditions that render certain individuals and teams especially vulnerable to the effects of team-level abusive supervision.
