Abstract:The dual resonant peaks of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) have been prepared by depositing the polyelectrolyte multilayer films composed of salt-containing poly(diallyldimethyl- ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and salt-containing poly(sodium-p- styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The multilayered polyelectrolyte films of PDDA/PSS were alternately assembled on the surface of the LPFG via electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly approach. The sensing performance of the dual resonant peaks of the LPFG to nanofilms has been further evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimal sensitivities of the left resonant peak and the right resonant peak in the dual resonant peaks were as high as 52.79 nm/bilayer and 56.09 nm/bilayer, respectively, which were approximately 128 times and 136 times that of another single resonant peak in sequence. Finally, the reason for the emergence of the dual resonant peaks and the corresponding response mechanism to nanofilms were further analyzed and discussed theoretically. These findings are very beneficial for exploring the application of LPFGs in many fields such as biochemical sensing, drug screening, food detection and so on.

Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:We propose a novel quasi-real-time sensing scheme by employing a modified optical frequency domain reflectometry technique to multiplex long-period grating (LPG) sensors of transmission mode. Different sensing signals are demodulated by different beat signals through presetting different values for the optical path differences between the measuring arms and a static reference arm. The amplitude of each beat signal is associated with the transmissivity of a sensing LPG. The present multiplexing scheme has the advantages of real-time, high speed, high sensitivity, large capacity, and high resolution over an intermediate length. A measurement of fiber bending curvature is demonstrated to verify good performances of the present LPG sensing system.

Abstract:Fiber optic label-free biosensors are currently experiencing wide diffusion, as they combine the performance of optical measurements with the advantages of optical fiber. This paper presents a comprehensive review about the design, development and testing of biosensor solutions based on in-fiber long period gratings (LPG). The attention is focused on optical transducers and methodologies allowing a significant enhancement of the sensitivity. Moreover, coating nanomaterials, bio-functionalization strategies and recognition elements providing the selectivity to the target analyte are reported in detail. The aim is to provide a detailed review concerning the state of the art about LPG-based label-free biosensors and to outline the future research trends.

Abstract:A new type technology of dynamic PZT modulation with fiber grating is proposed. It can change measure of wvelength shift with optical spectrum analyzes to count of optical power pulse detecting by oscilloscope. The technology is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The PZT is modulated by periodicity voltage and the fiber grating fixing on the it is also modulated by PZT. The measured resolutions in experiment are good agreement with ones in theory.

Abstract:We report a distributed multifunctional fiber sensing network based on weak-fiber Bragg gratings (WFBGs) and long period fiber grating (LPG) assisted OTDR system. The WFBGs are applied for temperature, strain, and vibration monitoring at key position, and the LPG is used as a linear filter in the system to convert the wavelength shift of WFBGs caused by environmental change into the power change. The simulation results show that it is possible to integrate more than 4472 WFBGs in the system when the reflectivity of WFBGs is less than 10(-5). Besides, the back-Rayleigh scattering along the whole fiber can also be detected which makes distributed bend sensing possible. As an experimental demonstration, we have used three WFBGs UV-inscribed with 50-m interval at the end of a 2.6-km long fiber, which part was subjected for temperature, strain, and vibration sensing, respectively. The ratio of the intensity of output and input light is used for temperature and strain sensing, and the results show strain and temperature sensitivities are 4.2 x 10(-4)/mu epsilon and 5.9 x 10(-3)/degrees C, respectively. Detection of multiple vibrations and single vibration with the broad frequency band up to 500 Hz are also achieved. In addition, distributed bend sensing which could be simultaneously realized in this system has been proposed.

Abstract:Optical fiber biosensors (OFBS) are being increasingly proposed due to their intrinsic advantages over conventional sensors, including their compactness, potential remote control and immunity to electromagnetic interference. This review systematically introduces the advances of OFBS based on long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) for chemical and biomedical applications from the perspective of design and functionalization. The sensitivity of such a sensor can be enhanced by designing the device working at or near the dispersion turning point, or working around the mode transition, or their combination. In addition, several common functionalization methods are summarized in detail, such as the covalent immobilization of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) silanization and graphene oxide (GO) functionalization, and the noncovalent immobilization of the layer-by-layer assembly method. Moreover, reflective LPFG-based sensors with different configurations have also been introduced. This work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of LPFG-based biosensors and to suggest some future directions for exploration.

Long-period Grating Inscription on Polymer Functionalized Optical Microfibers and Its Applications in Optical Sensing

Abstract:We demonstrated long-period grating（LPG） inscription on polymer functionalized optical microfibers and its applications in optical sensing. Optical microfibers were functionalized with ultraviolet-sensitive polymethyl methacrylate jackets and, thus, LPGs could be inscribed on optical microfibers via point-by-point ultraviolet laser exposure. For a 2 mm long microfiber LPG（MLPG） inscribed on optical microfibers with a diameter of 5.4 μm, a resonant dip of 15 d B at 1377 nm was observed. This MLPG showed a high sensitivity of strain and axial force, i.e.,-1.93 pm∕με and-1.15 pm∕μN, respectively. Although the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of the LPGs is relatively low, i.e.,-12.75 pm∕°C, it can be increased to be-385.11 pm∕°C by appropriate sealing. Benefiting from the small footprint and high sensitivity, MLPGs could have potential applications in optical sensing of strain,axial force, and temperature.

Abstract:A small-period long-period grating (LPG) with a period of $40\mu \text{m}$ fabricated in a single-mode fiber by femtosecond laser direct writing has been demonstrated. A series of high-order Bragg resonant peaks of Bragg grating and attenuation bands of LPG can be observed simultaneously in the broadband spectrum range that exhibited different responses to surrounding refractive index, temperature, and axial strain. Meanwhile, we provided a sensitivity matrix to correct the errors caused by temperature in measurements of refractive index and strain to achieve a dual-parameter fiber sensor at high temperature.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND METHODS Laron-type dwarfism, which is characterized by the clinical appearance of isolated growth hormone deficiency with elevated serum levels of growth hormone and decreased serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), has been described in approximately 50 patients. This condition is caused by a deficiency of the cellular receptor for growth hormone, and it is transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, as indicated by an equal sex distribution and a high rate of consanguinity in affected families. We studied 20 patients (19 females and 1 male, 2 to 49 years of age), from an inbred Spanish population in southern Ecuador, who had the clinical features of Laron-type dwarfism. RESULTS Seventeen patients were members of two large pedigrees. Among the 13 affected sibships, there were 19 affected and 24 unaffected female siblings and 1 affected and 21 unaffected male siblings. The patients' heights ranged from 10.0 to 6.7 SD below the normal mean height for age in the United States. In addition to the previously described features, 15 patients had limited elbow extensibility, all had blue scleras, affected adults had relatively short extremities, and all four affected women over 30 years of age had hip degeneration. Basal serum concentrations of growth hormone were elevated in all affected children (30 to 160 micrograms per liter) and normal to moderately elevated in the adults. The serum level of growth hormone-binding protein ranged from 1 to 30 percent of normal; IGF-I concentrations were low--less than or equal to 7 micrograms per liter in the children and less than or equal to 66 micrograms per liter in the adults (normal for Ecuadorean women, 98 to 238). Serum levels of IGF-II and growth hormone-dependent IGF-binding protein-3 were also low. CONCLUSIONS We describe an inbred population with a high incidence of growth hormone-receptor deficiency resulting in a clinical picture resembling Laron-type dwarfism but differing principally in showing a marked predominance of affected females. This population, of Mediterranean origin, may be genetically related to other reported populations with Laron-type dwarfism, but with the genetic defect linked to a trait resulting in the early fetal death of most affected males.

Abstract:Nowadays, there have been extensive applications of biosensors for industrial production, environment monitoring, disease diagnosis, and food safety. Attributed to periodically refractive index modulation, long period fiber grating (LPFG) can couple the core mode to forward propagating cladding modes at specific wavelengths, so it is sensitive to the variations of environmental refractive index. In addition, LPFG sensors have been ubiquitous in the biological detecting field with advantages of high sensitivity, compact structure, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and long-distance monitoring. In this paper, we focus on the review of sensing mechanisms, signal demodulation, fabrication and origin and recent development of biosensors based on LPFG. Besides, we discuss the methods for improving detection limits such as reducing cladding diameter, working near dispersion turning point (DTP), and within mode transition (MT) region. Applications on the detection of glucose, bacteria, immunoglobulins, biotin, DNA, hemoglobin, virus, drugs and so on are also classified and summarized in detail. Finally, several problems that hinder the practical use of LPFG biosensors are presented and some possible solutions are proposed, and the future development of biosensors is conceived. Over the past few years, biosensors based on LPFG have made remarkable achievements in the diversification of detected objects and improvement of extreme sensitivity. However, there are still some problems in practical applications for LPFG biosensors, such as temperature cross-sensitivity and stable wavelength demodulation, which need to be solved in the future.

The polarization dependent loss is large, up to 11.65 dB, which is caused by an asymmetric index profile in the cross section of the tapered LPG.

Abstract:As an important member of the optical fiber sensor family, long period fiber gratings (LPFG) have attracted increased attention due to their outstanding characteristics. The LPFG is a transmission fiber grating without backward reflection, and isolation is not required in the sensing system. The resonant wavelength and transmissivity of LPFGs are very sensitive to changes in refractive index, temperature, strain and transverse load, so they are widely used. In this article, recent advances in biological and chemical applications of LPFG sensors are described. Various methods for improving the sensitivity of LPFG sensors are summarized, such as reducing the diameter of the cladding and cascading. In addition, an important method involves the coating of the LPFG sensor with a specific recognition element for biomass detection or a sensitive metal film for chemical detection. The structural parameters and principles in the literature are discussed in detail. This article analyzes and compares the progress and deficiencies in the detection process and anticipates future developments.

Abstract:We propose a novel fiber device based on arc-induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in a hollow core silica capillary. This device is made up of a lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), LPFGs in capillary (CLPFGs), and a lead-out SMF, with a tapered air cavity (TAC) connecting SMF and capillary. The transmissive characteristics of capillary with and without LPFGs are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Mode coupling of CLPFGs at longer wavelength could be enhanced, as well as the sensing performance increases times over the capillary without gratings. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity can reach to be 15 713.5 nm/RIU in the RI range from 1.451 to 1.456. Moreover, with the asymmetric index distribution induced in the capillary, the CLPFGs present vector bending properties that the bending sensitivities are 79.4 and −8.8 nm/ , for bending directions at 0° and 180°, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed device shows negligible change to the external temperature variation, which could solve the cross-sensitivity problem. With the advantages of compactness, low cost, and ease of fabrication, the proposed device is potential in high-sensitivity RI sensing fields and vector bending measurement.

Abstract:A chiral long-period grating (CLPG) was fabricated successfully by scanning CO2 laser in a twisted conventional single-mode fiber. The strong mode coupling can be achieved in a short grating length. The sensing characteristics of the CLPGs were investigated experimentally. Compared with the conventional long-period fiber gratings, the CLPGs were found to have the similar temperature and refractive index sensitivities and much higher torsion, bending, and strain sensitivities. The high sensitivity of the CLPG can be attributed to the screw-type waveguide structure induced by the scanning laser in the twisted fiber. The proposed CLPGs could have great potential applications as filters and optical sensors.

Abstract:We report the fabrication and characterization of it highly sensitive refractive-index sensor based on a long-period grating (LPG) pair with a fiber-taper section in between. Two LPGs with similar to 3-dB transmissivity form an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A fiber taper is made between the two LPGs to improve and tailor the sensitivity of the sensor. Enhanced sensitivity, which is about five times higher than that of a normal LPG pair, is achieved in the experiment.
