Abstract:Hematite is an excellent catalyst for solar water splitting but its practical performance is still low. In this work, a hetero phase of β-Fe 2 O 3 was firstly introduced in α-Fe 2 O 3 to optimize the internal structure, which can synergistically work with oxygen vacancy to enhance the charge extraction, facilitate the charge transport, and suppress the electron-hole recombination. As a result, the obtained hematite exhibits a high initial photocurrent of 2.72 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, and can be well coupled with various further modifications such as P, Hf, and FeNiOOH to achieve an excellent photocurrent of 5.24 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE with a good stability over 100 h. Moreover, it can realize a benchmark solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 5.3% when connected to a commercial Si solar cell. The low cost, efficient, and stable hematite-based photoanodes may pave the way for practical solar water splitting.

Hematite homojunctions without foreign element doping for efficient and stable overall water splitting

Abstract:A new strategy to prepare a hematite homojunction photoanode is proposed in this work. Hematite films with different Fermi levels are obtained by tuning the carrier concentrations in the films. This enables us to fabricate hematite homojunction photoelectrodes without foreign element doping by constructing bilayer films with different Fermi levels, and realize enhanced photoelectric conversion efficiency for highly efficient solar water splitting. The photocurrent density for the hematite homojunction is ∼1.1 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is almost 5 times that of single type hematite photoanodes. What is more, with this homojunction configuration, the hematite homojunctions show a 15 times higher stability compared with high-donor-concentration Fe2O3 photoelectrodes for oxygen evolution. Most importantly, overall water splitting is realized and the photocell still holds 92.2% of the efficiency for water oxidation even after 73 hours.

Abstract:An overview on the recent progress in experimental strategies used to improve the photoelectrochemical response of hematite nanorod-based photoanodes for solar water splitting is provided. Emerging areas are identified that will require attention as the search continues for stable and efficient visible-light driven water oxidation systems that exploit the rational construction of different interface junctions. Increasing efforts have been focused on enhancing the performance of hematite-based photoanodes via morphology control, element doping, co-catalysts, surface modification, heterojunction construction, and via a combination between them. Particular attention has been given to heterojunctions, as these structures are more likely to utilize the benefits provided by combining elements with distinct properties, exhibiting functional behavior at the interfacial region, and increasing solar energy conversion by synergistic effects.

Abstract:The balance of the charge transfer and recombination kinetics of photoelectrodes governs the device efficiency for solar water splitting. Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) is a photoanode typically used because of advantages such as its abundance, low cost, multiple convenient deposition methods, and an attractive bandgap energy; however, poor electrical properties prevent high solar energy to hydrogen conversion efficiencies. In this work, we evaluate and compare several strategies to address this issue, using a nanorod array morphology and incorporation of overlayers of one or more materials that favor the charge carrier transfer kinetics and reduce surface recombination. We use intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) to evaluate these systems, and demonstrate that the presence of TiO2 and MoO x overlayers successfully suppresses surface recombination through passivation of hematite interfacial recombination sites. However, the hole transfer process at the overlayers occurs at more positive potentials due to the location of the new surface states at the overlayer-electrolyte interface. We show that the deposition of the CoPi oxygen evolution reaction co-catalyst partially addresses this disadvantage. The best efficiencies were obtained for the CoPi-TiO2/alpha-Fe2O3 and CoPi-MoO x /TiO2/alpha-Fe2O3 photoelectrodes, with internal quantum efficiencies of 0.42-0.44 under 455 nm irradiation.

Abstract:Photoelectrocatalytic water splitting offers a promising approach to convert sunlight into sustainable hydrogen energy. A thorough understanding of the relationships between the properties and functions of photoelectrocatalytic materials plays a crucial role in the design and fabrication of efficient photoelectrochemical systems for water splitting. This review presents the advances in the development of efficient photoelectrocatalytic materials. First, the fundamentals involved in the photoelectrocatalytic water splitting are elaborated. Then, the critical properties of photoelectrocatalytic materials are classified and discussed according to the associated photoelectrochemical processes, including light absorption, charge separation, charge transportation, and photoelectrocatalytic reactions. The importance of heterointerfaces in photoelectrodes is also mentioned in conjunction with the illustration of some functional interlayer materials. Finally, some strategies that can be employed in material screening and optimization for the construction of highly efficient photoelectrochemical devices for water splitting are also discussed.

Abstract:A simplistic and low-cost method that dramatically improves the performance of solution-grown hematite photoanodes for solar-driven water splitting through incorporation of nanohybrid metal oxide overlayers was developed. By heating the α-FeO/SnO-TiO electrode in an inert atmosphere, such as argon or nitrogen, the photocurrent increased to over 2 mA/cm at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, which is 10 times higher than that of pure hematite under 1 sun (100 mW/cm, AM 1.5G) light illumination. For the first time, we found a significant morphological difference between argon and nitrogen gas heat-treated hematite films and discussed the consequences for photoresponse. The origin for the enhancement, probed via theoretical modeling, stems from the facile incorporation of low formation energy dopants into the FeO layer at the interface of the metal oxide nanohybrid overlayer, which decreases recombination by increasing the electrical conductivity of FeO. These dopants diffuse from the overlayer into the α-FeO layer readily under inert gas heat treatment. This simple yet effective strategy could be applied to other dopants to increase hematite performance for solar energy conversion applications.

Abstract:In this work, a hollow‐sphere‐array hematite photoanode is designed and fabricated. The light absorption of hematite photoanodes is significantly improved, as well as the improved charge separation. A systematic evaluation is conducted through experiments and simulation, which gains an insight into the relationship between structures and properties in solar‐driven water splitting. Constructing 3D nanophotonic structures is regarded as an effective method to realize efficient solar‐to‐hydrogen conversion. These photonic structures can enhance the absorbance of photoelectrodes by the light trapping effect, promote the charge separation by designable charge transport pathway and provide a high specific surface area for catalytic reaction. However, most 3D structures reported so far mainly focused on the influence of light absorption and lacked a systematic investigation of the overall water splitting process. Herein, hematite hollow‐sphere‐array photoanodes are fabricated through a facile hydrothermal method with polystyrene templates. Validating by simulations and experiments, the hollow sphere array is proved to enhance the efficiency of light harvesting, charge separation and surface reaction at the same time. With an additional annealing treatment in oxygen, a photocurrent density of 2.26 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode can be obtained, which is 3.70 times larger than that with a planar structure in otherwise the same system. This work gains an insight into the photoelectrochemical water splitting process, which is valuable for the further design of advancing solar driven water splitting devices.

Abstract:Most implementations of the photoanode for water splitting are based on semiconductors and inorganic catalysts, wherein the surface defect and the grain boundary of inorganic materials have been a major barrier hindering the charge transfer between the light absorber and the catalyst. Here we report a new type of photoanode for water splitting, featuring the combination of α-Fe2O3 and molecular Ru catalysts. Fabricated by self-assembly, the semiconductor/molecule interface is not only efficient for the light-induced charge separation but also highly catalytic toward the water oxidation reaction. This work opens a new avenue for improving the efficiency of the solar-to-fuel conversion.

Abstract:Hematite is recognized as an excellent photocatalyst for photoelectrochemical photoanodes for water oxidation because of its favorable band gap, excellent anti-photocorrosion and structural stability in alkaline solution. However, slow charge transport and fast carrier recombination in the bulk and at the hematite photoanode/electrolyte interface, have limited its applications for water splitting. Herein, we report a highly efficient hematite/ferrhydrite core-shell photoanode system, consisting of a hematite (α-Fe2O3) semiconductor nanorods which dramatically enhance light harvesting, and ferrhydrite as the hole-storage shell. Our integrated hematite/ferrhydrite core-shell photoanode shows 2.7 times increased photo-current density under simulated sun light irradiation.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is considered a prospective and attractive way to transforming solar energy to hydrogen (H2). Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is an n-type semiconductor material, having the strength of suitable bandgap, relatively wide light absorption range, high chemical stability, and abundant reserve, which makes it a promising alternative as photoanode material for PEC water splitting. Ever since the earliest research of α-Fe2O3 for PEC water splitting, numerous efforts have been dedicated to developing different strategies for synthesizing and modifying α-Fe2O3 to boost its performance, which has resulted in notable progress in recent years. In this paper, various synthesis methods and modification strategies of α-Fe2O3 in PEC applications are reviewed, principally concentrating on nanostructure design, element doping, co-catalyst modification, heterostructure construction and modification and so forth. In the end, a personal perspective on the challenges and opportunities of this promising material is put forward.

Abstract:Confounded by global energy needs, much research has been devoted to convert solar energy to various usable forms, such as chemical energy in the form of hydrogen via water splitting. Most photoelectrodes, such as hematite, utilize UV and visible radiation, whereas ∼40% infrared (IR) energy remains unconverted. This work represents our initial attempt to utilize IR radiation, that is, adding rare-earth materials to existing photoelectrodes. A simple substrate composed of hematite film and rare-earth nanocrystals (RENs) was prepared and characterized. Spectroscopy evidence indicates that the RENs in the composite absorb IR radiation (980 nm) and emit at 550 and 670 nm. The emitted photons are absorbed by surrounding hematite films, leading to improvement of water splitting efficiency as measured by photocurrent enhancement. This initial work demonstrates the feasibility and concept of using RENs for utilizing more solar radiation, thus improving the efficiency of existing solar materials and devices.

Abstract:Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3), with a bandgap suitable for absorption of the solar spectrum, is ideally suited for use as a photoanode material in photoelectrochemical (PEC) conversion of solar light into hydrogen fuel via water splitting. However, low hole mobility, short hole lifetime, high density of surface states, and slow kinetics for oxygen evolution at the alpha-Fe2O3/electrolyte interface have limited the PEC performance of alpha-Fe2O3 photoanodes to date. Along with numerous reports on doping and nanostructuring of alpha-Fe2O3, increased attention has been paid to alpha-Fe2O3 heterostructure design for improved PEC performance. This review article provides an overview of four main approaches to rational heterostructure design: coupling alpha-Fe2O3 with (1) an n- or p-type semiconductor for promoting charge separation; (2) a nanotextured conductive substrate for efficient charge collection; (3) a surface/interface passivation layer for reduced surface/interface charge recombination; (4) a catalyst for accelerated water oxidation kinetics. The achievements to date demonstrate that high PEC performance may be accessed with these designs. In addition, we review time-resolved laser techniques used to probe the charge carrier dynamics of these heterostructures. Dynamic studies have provided insight into the mechanisms responsible for the improved PEC performance in these materials and helped to guide continued design of alpha-Fe2O3 heterostructures for further enhancement of PEC water splitting. As summarized in this review article, rational heterostructure design is a promising strategy to push forward the application of alpha-Fe2O3 for potential low cost and high efficiency solar hydrogen conversion. A better fundamental understanding of the charge carrier dynamics in these structures in turn helps to guide and improve the heterostructure design.
Enhancing Solar-Driven Water Splitting with Surface-Engineered Nanostructures

Abstract:Functional nanoscale interfaces that promote the transport of photoexcited charge carriers are fundamental to efficient hydrogen production during photoelectrochemical (PEC) splitting of water. Here, the realization of a functional one-dimensional nanostructure achieved through surface engineering of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanorods with a TiO2 overlayer is reported. The surface-engineered hematite nanostructure exhibits significantly improved PEC performance as compared to untreated alpha-Fe2O3, with an increase in the maximum incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) of nearly 400% at 350 nm. While addition of the TiO2 overlayer did not alter the lifetime of photoexcited charge carriers, as evidenced from transient absorption spectroscopy, it is found that the presence of TiO2 could enhance oxygen electrocatalysis by interfacial electron enrichment, largely attributed to enhanced O(2p)-Fe(3d) hybridization. Moreover, the interfacial electronic structure revealed from XANES measurements of the alpha-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanorods suggests that photoexcited holes in alpha-Fe2O3 may efficiently transfer through the TiO2 overlayer to the electrolyte while electrons migrate to the external circuit along the one-dimensional nanorods, thereby promoting charge separation and enhancing PEC splitting of water.

Abstract:The severe charge recombination and the sluggish kinetic for oxygen evolution reaction have largely limited the application of hematite (α-Fe2O3) for water splitting. Herein, the construction of Cu2S/Fe2O3 heterojunction and discover that the formation of covalent SO bonds between Cu2S and Fe2O3 can significantly improve the photoelectrochemical performance and stability for water splitting is reported. Compared with bare Fe2O3, the heterostructure of Cu2S/Fe2O3 endows the resulting electrode with enhanced charge separation and transfer, extended range for light absorption, and reduced charge recombination rate. Additionally, due to the photothermal properties of Cu2S, the heterostructure exhibits locally a higher temperature under illumination, profitable for increasing the rate of oxygen evolution reaction. Consequently, the photocurrent density of the heterostructure is enhanced by 177% to be 1.19 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. This work may provide guideline for future in the design and fabrication of highly efficient photoelectrodes for various reactions.

Abstract:Solar water splitting is an environmentally friendly reaction of producing hydrogen gas. Since Honda and Fujishima first demonstrated solar water splitting in 1972 by using semiconductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) as photoanode in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell, extensive efforts have been invested into improving the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency and lower the production cost of photoelectrochemical devices. In the last few years, hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanostructures have been extensively studied as photoanodes for PEC water splitting. Although nanostructured hematite can improve its photoelectrochemical water splitting performance to some extent, by increasing active sites for water oxidation and shortening photogenerated hole path length to semiconductor/electrolyte interface, the photoactivity of pristine hematite nanostructures is still limited by a number of factors, such as poor electrical conductivities and slow oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Previous studies have shown that tin (Sn) as an n-type dopant can substantially enhance the photoactivity of hematite photoanodes by modifying their optical and electrical properties. In this thesis, I will first demonstrate an unintentional Sn-doping method via high temperature annealing of hematite nanowires grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate to enhance the donor density. In addition to introducing extrinsic dopants into semiconductors, the carrier densities of hematite can also be enhanced by creating intrinsic defects. Oxygen vacancies function as shallow donors for a number of hematite. In this regard, I have investigated the influence of oxygen content on thermal decomposition of FeOOH to induce oxygen vacancies in hematite. In the end, I have studied low temperature activation of hematite nanostructures.

Abstract:Charge transport in the bulk and across the semiconductor/electrolyte interface is one of the major issues that limits photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance in hematite photoelectrodes. Efficient charge transport in the entire hematite is of great importance to obtaining high photoelectrochemical properties. Herein, to reach this goal, we employed both TiO2 underlayer and overlayer deposition on hematite nanorod films, followed by a fast annealing treatment. The TiO2 underlayer and overlayer not only serve as dopant sources for carrier density increase but also reduce charge recombination at the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/hematite interface and accelerate charge transfer across the hematite/electrolyte interface. This synergistic doping and interface modifying effects give rise to an enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance of hematite nanorod arrays, generating an impressive photocurrent density of 1.49 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs RHE. This is the first report on using both underlayer and overlayer modification with the same material to improve charge transport through the entire electron transport path in hematite, which provides a novel way to manipulate charge transfer across the semiconductor interface for a high-performance photoelectrode.
Engineering Hematite/plasmonic Nanoparticle Interfaces for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of metallic nanoparticles has become an attractive strategy for increasing the efficiency of solar water splitting. However, the metal/semiconductor junction may introduce unwanted interfaces or surface species that reduce the SPR effect as well as compromising efficient charge transport. The processes of separation, transport, and transfer of charges in metal-based plasmonic photoelectrodes are highly sensitive to the nature of the coupling between metal/semiconductor/electrolyte and a comprehensive understanding of these interfaces is still lacking. In this work, we proposed the construction of hematite photoanodes modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and aluminum oxide with different arrangements, whose optimized coupling between the interfaces led to enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Using a combination of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, well-established materials synthesis and x-ray spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and PEC characterization techniques, selected architecture design strategies are evaluated. The experimental results reveal that the direct contact between semiconductors and metals coated by the dielectric leads to an improvement in localized electric field at the interface upon the formation of hot electrons, boosting the generation and separation efficiencies of electron–hole pairs. The main role of the dielectric coating, which led to an ineffective surface state passivation, is to prevent the photooxidation of AuNPs. FDTD calculations are employed to investigate the spatial distribution of the electric-field intensity around the AuNPs deposited onto the hematite surfaces and to corroborate the local field enhancement effect. The outcome of this combined experimental-theoretical study reveals that engineering plasmonic interfaces is a powerful tool to design efficient photoanodes for plasmon-driven PEC water splitting.
