Abstract:Motorcycle safety has received much attention from both researchers and policymakers in the United States (US), especially because motorcycle fatalities and injuries are increasing at the same time that overall motor vehicle fatalities have been decreasing. To our knowledge, no study has linked trends in gasoline prices with new motorcycle sales in the US. New motorcycle sales data are more likely to be associated with less experienced riders who may be entering motorcycling in response to escalating gasoline prices. We compare trends in gasoline prices with industry-provided data on new motorcycle sales, and then estimate the impact of new motorcycle sales on crash fatalities. Data come from the Motorcycle Industry Council and Fatality Analysis Reporting System for 1984-2009. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) regression is used to model the relationship of inflation-adjusted gasoline prices with sales. The impact of these new sales on fatalities is estimated. New motorcycles had their lowest sales with 186,000 units in 1992 and, afterward, grew every year until 2008, reaching 888,000 units—a 400% increase. Sales and gasoline prices are highly correlated (r=.78). ARIMA regression modeling predicts that for every $1 increase in gasoline prices, there are an additional 286,000 new motorcycle sales in the US (p<.001). When inflation-adjusted gasoline prices increased by 117% from 1998-2008, this was associated with an increase in sales of 528,000, but this resulted in 438 additional motorcycle fatalities. Although prior research shows a negative relationship between gasoline prices and driving, we present evidence that gasoline prices may be increasing incentives to purchase motorcycles, leading to an increase in fatalities from motorcycle crashes. These findings lend support to traffic safety initiatives to improve motorcycle safety gear and training requirements for new motorcycle riders.

Abstract:Objective Economic factors such as rising gasoline prices may contribute to the crash trends by shaping individuals' choices of transportation modalities. This study examines the relationship of gasoline prices with fatal and non-fatal motorcycle injuries.Methods Data on fatal and non-fatal motorcycle injuries come from California's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System for 2002-2011. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) regressions were used to estimate the impact of inflation-adjusted gasoline price per gallon on trends of motorcycle injuries.Results Motorcycle fatalities and severe and minor injuries in California were highly correlated with increasing gasoline prices from 2002 to 2011 (r = 0.76, 0.88 and 0.85, respectively). In 2008, the number of fatalities and injuries reached 13 457-a 34% increase since 2002, a time period in which inflation-adjusted gasoline prices increased about $ 0.30 per gallon every year. The majority of motorcycle riders involved in crashes were male (92.5%), middle-aged (46.2%) and non-Hispanic white (67.9%). Using ARIMA modelling, we estimated that rising gasoline prices resulted in an additional 800 fatalities and 10 290 injuries from 2002 to 2011 in California.Conclusions Our findings suggest that increasing gasoline prices led to more motorcycle riders on the roads and, consequently, more injuries. Aside from mandatory helmet laws and their enforcement, other strategies may include raising risk awareness of motorcyclists and investment in public transportation as an alternative transportation modality to motorcycling. In addition, universally mandated training courses and strict licensing tests of riding skills should be emphasised to help reduce the motorcycle fatal and non-fatal injuries.

Abstract:Economic factors can have substantial effects on transportation crash trends. This study makes a comprehensive examination of the relationship between the retail gasoline price (including state and federal fuel taxes) and transportation fatal crashes from 2007 to 2016 in the US. Data on motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian fatal crashes come from Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) provided by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the gasoline price data is from U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Random effect negative binomial regression models are used to estimate the impact of inflation-adjusted gasoline prices on trends of transportation fatal crashes. Initial results combined with results of previous studies showed that gender and transportation mean type (motorcycle, non-motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian) play prominent roles in interpreting the final model, so by using random effect negative binomial regression, seven models are developed to evaluate the effects of gasoline price changes on total population, male, female, motorcyclists, non-motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians separately. Our findings suggest that increasing the gasoline prices will not significantly alter the number of total fatal crashes. However, by looking at different vehicle types, it is estimated that one dollar increase in adjusted gasoline price is associated with 24.2% increase in the number of motorcycle fatal crashes, 1.9% decrease in the number of non-motorcycle fatal crashes, and 0.7% decrease in the number of pedestrian fatal crashes. Also, there is no noticeable difference between male and female in response to the gasoline price changes.

Abstract:Prior research has suggested that rising gasoline prices decreases vehicle miles traveled and thus motor vehicle crash injuries. However, gasoline prices have recently decreased and this may result in a reversal of historical declines in injuries and fatalities on public roadways. We use motor vehicle crash and gasoline price data for Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom (UK), United States (US) and the Netherlands to examine the historical relationship between gasoline prices and traffic safety and predict the impact of decreasing prices on fatalities and injuries in 2015. Road safety data come from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) statistics, and gasoline price data were retrieved from the US Energy Information Administration. Outcomes are number of motor vehicle crash fatalities and injuries per million population, and the main predictor is gasoline price in US dollars per gallon, which were adjusted for inflation and for Purchasing Power Parity across countries. Random-effects models were used to estimate the effects of increasing gasoline prices on fatal and non-fatal injuries. Average gasoline prices varied substantially across the OECD countries in 1996-2012, ranging from $2.66 in the US to $5.71 in the Netherlands. Similarly, the number of motor vehicle crash fatal and nonfatal injuries ranged from 9,706 per million population in the US to 679 per million in the Netherlands. For all countries, the correlation between annual crash injuries and gasoline prices was significant and negative. Overall, the correlation between prices and all injuries per million population was -.59. Multivariate log regression analysis, adjusting for GDP per capita, unemployment rates, percent urban population and random effects, predicts that a 10% decrease in gasoline prices results in a 3.0% increase in non-fatal injuries and 8.5% increase in fatal injuries per million population. Compared to 2012, gasoline prices in January 2015 are an average of 26.8% lower across all countries. Our multivariate analysis suggests that this is predicted to result in 8.0% more non-fatal injuries and 23% more fatal injuries. For example, the UK is predicted to have an increase of 385 fatalities and 15,460 injuries if recent decreases in gasoline prices persist into the future. Our findings suggest that declining gasoline prices may result in an increase in fatal and non-fatal injuries from motor vehicle crashes in several OECD countries. This may potentially slow or reverse the historical decline in motor vehicle injuries over the prior decade.

Abstract:Motorcycle is a popular mode of transportation in many developing countries, including Pakistan. Since the last decade, the registered number of motorcycles in Pakistan has increased by six times, constituting 74% of the total registered vehicles. However, limited research efforts have been made to investigate motorcycle-related safety issues in Pakistan. Thus, the relationship between potential risk factors and injury outcomes of motorcycle crashes is still unclear in the country. This study, therefore, established a random parameter logit model to examine the factors associated with the motorcycle injury severity. The analysis is based on two years (2014–2015) of data collected through the road traffic injuries surveillance system from Karachi city, Pakistan. The results indicate that the summer season, weekends, nighttime, elderly riders, heavy vehicle, and single-vehicle collisions are positively associated with fatalities, while the presence of pillion passengers and motorcycle-to-motorcycle crashes are negatively associated with fatalities. More importantly, in the specific context of Pakistan, morning hours, young riders, and female pillion passengers whose clothes stuck in the wheel significantly increase the fatal injury outcomes. Based on the findings, potential countermeasures to improve motorcycle safety are discussed, such as strict enforcement to control motorcyclists' risky behavior and speeding, provision of exclusive motorcycles lanes, and education of female pillion passengers. The findings from this study would increase awareness of motorcycle safety and can be used by the policymakers to enhance road safety in Pakistan, as well as in other developing countries with similar situations.

Abstract:Objective To examine the rising casualty rate related to electric bicycle usage.Design Analysis of the Hangzhou Police Bureau's data on electric-bicycle-related injuries and deaths.Setting Hangzhou, China, 2004-2008.Patients or subjects Electric-bicycle riders.Main outcome measure Electric-bicycle-related casualty rates in Hangzhou from 2004 to 2008.Results There was a significant average annual increase in electric-bicycle-related casualty rates of 2.7 per 100 000 population (95% CI 1.5 to 3.9, p=0.005). At the same time, overall road traffic and manual-bicyclerelated deaths and injuries decreased.Conclusion As it is difficult to ban the use of electric bicycles in China, laws, rules and regulations need to be reinforced and strengthened. New regulations should be created for the safety of electric bicycle riders and others on the road, and mandatory helmet use should be considered.

Abstract:Previous studies have identified several factors that contribute to the accident risk of motorcyclists: sex, age, experience, personality traits, and so on. It is for sure that motorcycling represents more than just a mode of motor transportation or sport. It could be a part of riders` personal lifestyle that with other components can contribute to their risk behavior and greater involvement in traffic accidents. The main aim of the study was to determine how lifestyle dimensions of male motorcyclists influence the risky behavior of motorcyclists and their involvement in traffic accidents. The set of questionnaires about lifestyle, risky behavior, and demographic data were sent by mail to 300 motorcyclists and 206 participants completed material and sent it back. Results showed that there is a significant correlation between lifestyle and risky behavior of the riders and their involvement in traffic accidents. Also, lifestyle predicts the large amount of the variance of risky behavior and traffic accidents of motorcyclists. Authors can conclude that lifestyle has an important impact on motorcyclists` risky behavior and traffic accidents involvement.

Abstract:<p>Motorcyclists face higher risks of severe injuries in crashes compared to motor vehicle drivers who are often protected by seatbelts and airbags during collisions. A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that motorcyclists have 27 times the risk of fatality in traffic crashes as much as motor vehicle drivers. Previous studies have identified a list of risk factors associated with motorcyclist injury severity and generated valuable insights for countermeasures to protect motorcyclists in crashes. These studies have shown that wearing helmets and/or motorcycle-specific reflective clothing and boots, driving alcohol/drug-free, and obeying traffic regulations are good practices for safe motorcycling. However, these practices and other risk factors are likely to interact with local geographic, socio-economic, and cultural contexts, leading to diversified correlations with motorcyclist injury severity, which remains under-explored. Such correlations may exhibit variations across space and time. The objective of this study is to revisit the correlates of motorcyclist injury severity with a focus on the spatial and temporal variations of correlations between risk factors and injury severity. This study employed an integrated spatiotemporal analytical approach to mine comprehensive statewide 20 years' motorcycle-involved traffic crashes (N = 50,823) in Pennsylvania. Non-stationarity tests were performed to examine the significance of variations in spatially and temporally local correlations. The results show that most factors, such as helmet, engine size, vehicle age, pillion passenger, at-fault striking, and speeding, hold significant non-stationary relationships with motorcyclist injury severity. Furthermore, cluster analysis of estimations reveals the regional similarities of correlates, which may help practitioners develop regional motorcyclist safety countermeasures.</p>

Increased Risk of Death or Disability in Unhelmeted Wisconsin Motorcyclists.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among motorcycle rider helmet, alcohol use and the full spectrum of health outcomes following crashes.METHODS:Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-sponsored Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) for Wisconsin, 2002, were used to study 2462 motorcycle crash victims. Logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship of helmet and alcohol use with outcomes.RESULTS:Compared to helmeted motorcycle riders, unhelmeted riders were more likely to require inpatient hospitalization (Relative Risk Ratio [RRR] = 1.4; 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.1-1.8) or die (RR = 1.9, 95% CI:1.0-3.7) but equally likely to be treated in emergency departments. Injury patterns differed by helmet use. Unhelmeted riders were more likely to suffer injuries of the head (odds ratio [OR] = 2.3, 95% CI:1.5-3.3) or face (OR = 3.0, 95% CI:2.1-4.2) than helmeted riders. No difference was observed in other injuries, including spine/neck injuries. Reported alcohol use was more prevalent among patients who were inpatients or died, and was associated with higher likelihood of not wearing a helmet (OR = 7.0, 95% CI:4.8-12.9).CONCLUSION:Motorcycle riders who are inpatients or die in a crash are less likely to be helmeted and more likely to sustain head or face injuries. Alcohol use is associated with unhelmeted riding and increased risk of poor outcomes. These findings support policy and educational efforts promoting helmet use, which seek to decrease these tragedies.
Motorcycle-Riding Experience: Friend or Foe? Understanding Its Effects on Driving Behavior and Accident Risk

Abstract:For those who cannot afford vehicles, motorcycles are a common mode of transportation in Pakistan. Although many motorcycle riders also drive vehicles, they continue to engage in dangerous behaviors such as speeding, weaving through traffic, and disobeying traffic laws, which can result in accidents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between prior motorcycle-riding experience, dangerous driving behaviors, and traffic accidents. A total of 623 drivers in Pakistan participated in a study in which questions on their demographics, involvement in accidents, and dangerous driving practices were posed. Two statistical models were employed to analyze the data and ascertain how motorcycle-riding experience affected dangerous driving behaviors and accidents. Drivers with past motorcycle-riding experience were found to be more likely to exhibit aggressive and risky driving behaviors, as validated by principal component analysis. Certain demographic characteristics were also linked to dangerous driving behaviors, and prior motorcycle experience was identified as a crucial factor in anticipating traffic collisions. The probability of a traffic accident increased by 67% for each unit rise in motorcycle-riding experience. To lower the incidence of accidents, the study suggests that the government and road safety regulatory authorities impose strict rules and regulations for motorcycle riders.
Crash Severity Pattern of Motorcycle Crashes in Developing Country Context

Abstract:Despite paying special attention to the motorcycle-involved crashes in the safety research, little is known about their pattern and impacts in developing countries. The widespread adoption of motorcycles in such regions in tandem with the vulnerability of motorcyclists exacerbates the likelihood of severe crashes. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the underlying factors contributing to the severity of motorcycle-involved crashes through employing crash data from March 2018 to March 2019 from Iran. Considering the ordinal nature of three injury classes of property-damage-only (PDO), injury, and fatal crashes in our data, an ordered logistic regression model is employed to address the problem. The data statistics suggest that motorcycle is responsible for 38% of injury and 15% of all fatal crashes in the dataset. The results indicate that significant factors contributing to more severe crashes include collision, road, temporal, and motorcycle rider characteristics. Among all attributes, our model is most sensitive to the motorcycle-pedestrian accident, which increases the probability of belonging a crash into injury and fatal crashes by 0.289 and 0.019, respectively. Moreover, we discovered a significant degree of correlation between young riders and riders without a license. Finally, upon the insights obtained from the results, we propose safety countermeasures, including 1) strict traffic rule enforcement upon riders and pedestrians, 2) educational programs, and 3) road-specific adjustment policies.

Profile of low and middle-income countries with increases versus decreases in road crash fatality population rates and necessity of motorcycle safety

Abstract:Introduction: Road crash fatalities have increased significantly in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMICs) between 2006 and 2016. This study presents how road safety characteristics have changed in LMICs by comparing data over time and relationships between the road crash fatality increase and a wide range of data from LMICs. Parametric and nonparametric methods are used to test significance. Method: There were 35 countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region, the Sub-Saharan Africa region, the East Asia and Pacific region, and the South Asia region, where the population rate of road crash fatalities consistently increased as per country reports, World Health Organization and Global Burden of Disease estimates. In these countries, the proportion of fatalities involving motorcycles (including powered two or three-wheelers) substantially increased (44%) over the same time (statistically significant). In these countries, the helmet-wearing rate was only 46% for all passengers. These patterns were not observed in LMICs with decreasing population fatality rates. Results: Motorcycle helmet usage rates strongly correlate with decreasing fatalities per 10,000 motorcycles in Low-Income Countries (LICs) and LMICs. Effective interventions (including increasing helmet usage) are urgently needed for motorcycle crash trauma in LMICs, especially where the economy and motorization rapidly grow. National strategies for motorcycle safety, conforming to the Safe System principles, are recommended. Conclusions: For evidence-based policy formulation, there is a need to continue strengthening data collection, sharing, and use.

Abstract:Geopolitical conflicts and military actions pushed gasoline prices in China into the highest from March to April 2022 for the first time. We aim to quantitatively understand how the rising gasoline and vehicle prices affect consumers' vehicle purchase intention with different demographic characteristics simultaneously. The study applies Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Panel Data Mixed Logit model to analyze the data from the uniform experimental design. We subdivide the respondents into three groups: fuel vehicle owners, new energy vehicle owners, and car-free individuals. The findings show that if the maximum increase price of pure energy vehicles does not exceed 27,000 CNY, fuel vehicle owners will still be inclined to purchase pure energy vehicles, accompanied by China's 95 gasoline rising from 8.44 on February 18th to 9.41 CNY per liter on April 1st, 2022. However, the increasing prices are 25,000 and 22,000 CNY, which will offset the impact of rising gasoline prices on new energy vehicle owners and car-free individuals. The results have implications for introducing fuel tax to cope with adverse changes in consumers' vehicle purchase intention. The study provides theoretical support for analyzing consumers' travel behavior and vehicle purchase intention when gasoline prices have huge fluctuations in the future.

An analysis of the novice motorcyclist crashes in Taiwan

Abstract:Objective: Motorcycles comprised over 60% of motor vehicles in Taiwan. There were still many motorcycle crashes in Taiwan, especially among young riders. This study investigated the characteristics of novice motorcyclist crashes in Taiwan over the period January 2011 to December 2016. Various risk factors affecting the severity of novice motorcyclist crashes, such as the rider characteristics, licensing conditions, and the environment, were examined. Methods: To model the count data with multiple crash severities, several regression models were considered. The multinomial logit (MNL) model, ordered logit (OL) model, and partial proportional odds (PPO) model were chosen and investigated for the relationships between the severity of novice motorcyclist crashes and potential risk factors. Results: The results showed that the novice rider who was underage or unlicensed had a higher probability of a fatal crash. Male sex, helmet use, drinking, college student, frontal impact, urban or dry road, and daytime all played significant roles in novice motorcyclist crashes. Conclusions: Taiwan traffic safety needs further policy adjustments and public education toward novice motorcycle crashes. Adequate driving training and providing a user-friendly environment for novice riders could help. Taiwan should consider graduated driver licensing systems for skill-building and riding supervision for new motorcyclists.

Abstract:Will higher oil prices lead to higher sales of fuel-cleaned cars? To answer this question, this study tries to find out the correlation between oil prices and new energy vehicle sales. In order to gather information on the recent increase in oil prices, the volume of new energy vehicle sales since 2022, people's decrease in the use of gasoline vehicles as a result of the increase in gasoline prices, and local government policies on new energy vehicles, this research applies the method of data gathering and avoidance with new energy vehicles as the object. It is concluded that with the rise of oil prices, new energy car sales are also increasing, which can make new energy vehicle manufacturers better understand the demand for new energy vehicles. It may also reflect the rising trend in new-energy car popularity. In order to guarantee the constant expansion of new energy vehicles, the government must simultaneously develop a number of measures.

Abstract:The motorcycles are unignorable near-ground pollutant emission sources that increase the human exposure in the dense area. However, the information of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions under different scenarios of engine and emission control for motorcycle is limited. This study focused on the PAH emissions from two fuel-injection types of motorcycles, including the premixed fuel-injection (PFi) with carburetor and electronic fuel-injection (EFi). Specifically, the effects of throttle opening (TO), secondary air system (SAS), oxygen sensor (OS), oxidation catalytic converter (OCC), and three-way catalytic converter (TWC) on PAH emissions are investigated. Results show that the PAH emission concentrations increase 227–727%, 351–492%, and 155–408% by the increasing TO ratio, unworking SAS, and OS units in both motorcycles. For the PFi engine, the OCC unit is found to be more effective in PAH control (31–89%) than the SAS system (72–80%), especially under low TO operation. For the EFi engine which dominates the motorcycle market recently, the oxygen sensor for more accurate combustion control shows a better PAH reduction (36–76%) than TWC system (21–66%). The ultra-fine particulate phase PAHs, which is hardly removed by catalyst, needs to be further considered. Moreover, the total PAH emission level of the EFi engine is still about ten times higher than that of the PFi. By the annual emission calculation for three densely populated countries, the recent evolution significantly reduces the annual hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions but have unignorable PAH emissions. These emissions continuously affect the human health in the near-ground urban air and need to be considered in the next generation of motorcycle design.Graphical abstract

Modelling the effects of fuel price changes on road traffic collisions in the European Union using panel data

Abstract:Road deaths globally have steadily climbed in recent years with the increase in motorisation. Yet in many economically developed countries they have actually fallen. Explanations for this reduction include the role of improved vehicle and highway design, better enforcement and the impact of the economic downturn, whilst there is also some evidence that microeconomic factors like changes in road fuel prices could be contributing to this situation. This paper investigates the effects of fuel prices on road collision frequency in countries where fuel prices are relatively high. Monthly panel data from 28 EU member states from 2005 to 2018 was analysed for both petrol and diesel prices, and for fatalities, total injury collisions and total collisions using: 1) random effect negative binomial (RENB); and 2) population-averaged negative binomial using generalised estimating equations (GEE). The findings indicate that higher fuel prices lead to lower road traffic deaths, injury collisions and overall collisions across all 28 EU member states. Thus, for every 10 percent increase in fuel prices, there will be a 2.6 percent and 2.2 percent reduction in fatalities for petrol and diesel models, respectively. Similarly, total collisions fall by 1.4 percent for petrol and 1.2 for diesel models, and total casualties fall by 1.6 percent for petrol and 1.4 percent for diesel with every 10 percent rise in fuel price. These results could be due to drivers reducing speed to achieve better fuel efficiency and to people driving less to save money - in particular younger, riskier drivers - hence reducing exposure. These findings suggest that policies replacing petrol and diesel vehicles with alternative fuel sources over the next 20 years could have negative repercussions for road safety if not adequately considered.

Abstract:Motorcyclist fatalities have risen in Latin and Asian countries, highlighting the necessity for a systematic approach through the Safe System (SS) to achieve zero fatalities. Traditional studies often rely on data-driven methodologies, which may lead to biased results and may fall short of capturing the systematic SS perspective. This paper develops a causal analysis of crash severity involving motorcyclists based on the SS approach and Pearl's causal inference paradigm, using observational data. Initially, the main sources of bias related to traditional categorical modeling applied to crash severity analysis were illustrated through a simulation example. Subsequently, a literature review was conducted to establish a conceptual framework rooted in the SS. Finally, causal hypotheses were formulated and tested using structural equation modeling applied to data collected from motorcyclist crashes on federal highways in the state of Ceará/Brazil. The outcomes of the causal model support the initial hypothesis that alcohol use significantly contributes to the severity outcome of motorcycles-related crashes. The model unveils a noteworthy association between weekends and alcohol consumption and an inclination among younger individuals toward newer motorcycles with more powerful engines. The adoption of a causal approach enhances result reliability by controlling for confounding variables and incorporating a theoretical framework.

Abstract:Motorcycle bans have been implemented in many cities across China for long time, one of the main reasons for which is the high death rate of the traffic accidents related to motorcycles’ fast speed and weak safety. This study applies a quasi-experiment on whether or not and when motorcycle bans are implemented in the 11 prefecture cities in Zhejiang Province, taking the prefecture-level cities with motorcycle bans as the experimental group and the others as the control group, so as to identify whether such bans can effectively reduce the number of traffic accidents and deaths, as well as the related internal mechanism. This study concludes that the effect of the motorcycle bans on reducing the number of traffic accident deaths is significant, and their impact does not decrease over time due to the diversity of policies. Further, the mechanism analysis shows that the motorcycle bans have not only reduced the number of motorcycles and thus may improve the traffic safety but also diminished the traffic accidents by reducing the fatality rate. Finally, this study proposes to optimize the motorcycle bans by planning special lanes and strengthening motorcycle management.

Abstract:The main objective of this study is to quantify how different policy-sensitive factors are associated with risk of motorcycle injury crashes, while controlling for rider-specific, psycho-physiological, and other observed/unobserved factors. The analysis utilizes data from a matched case-control design collected through the FHWA Motorcycle Crash Causation Study. In particular, 351 cases (motorcyclists involved in injury crashes) are analyzed vis-a-vis similarly-at-risk 702 matched controls (motorcyclists not involved in crashes). The paper presents a novel heterogeneity based statistical analysis that accounts for the possibility of both within and between matched case-control variations. Overall, the correlations between key risk factors and injury crash propensity exhibit significant observed and unobserved heterogeneity. The results of best-fit random parameters logit model with heterogeneity-in-means show that riders with partial helmet coverage have a significantly lower risk of injury crash involvement. Lack of motorcycle rider conspicuity captured by dark (red) upper body clothing is associated with significantly higher injury crash risk (odds ratio 3.87). Importantly, a rider motorcycle-oriented lower clothing significantly lowers the odds of injury crash involvement. Formal motorcycle driving training in recent years was associated with lower injury crash propensity. Finally, riders with less sleep prior to crash/interview exhibited 1.97 times higher odds of crash involvement. Methodologically, the correlations of several rider, exposure, apparel, and riding history related factors with crash risk do not only vary in magnitude but in direction as well. The study results indicate the need to develop appropriate countermeasures, such as refresher motorcycle training courses, prevention of sleep-deprived/fatigued riding, and riding under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
