Abstract:Low-dimensional nanostructures have been widely used as reinforcements for polymer nanocomposites. However, a majority of studies have considered the samples containing a single nanofiller or perfectly aligned nanofillers, which is usually not the case for the as-synthesized samples. Through molecular dynamics simulation, this work systematically assessed the tensile performance of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites with randomly dispersed carbon nanothreads (NTHs)-a new one-dimensional ultrathin nanofiller. It is found that NTH causes deterioration on the tensile properties due to the introduction of continuous lower-density interphases surrounding the filler, while such negative impacts can be turned into positive enhancements by functionalization. In particular, the cross-linking at the NTH/PMMA interface is able to effectively promote the enhancement effect from the nanofiller. Our results show that the samples with random but vertically aligned NTHs outperform their counterpart with randomly dispersed NTHs. Overall, it is shown that the enhancement effect is significantly influenced by the NTH dispersion, length, weight fraction, functionalization, and cross-linking. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the influence on the tensile performance of polymer nanocomposites from the dispersion of nanofillers, which should benefit on the fabrication and application of high-performance polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with excellent mechanical performances have been increasingly sought after in engineering applications such as biotechnology, aerospace, and automotive areas. Through molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, this work systematically assessed the tensile performance of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite reinforced by randomly dispersed two-dimensional diamond-diamane. It is found that randomly dispersed diamane effectively enhances the tensile properties of PMMA with surface functionalization, and the enhancement effect can be remarkably augmented by cross-linking. Simulations reveal that the enhancement effect can be effectively tailored by the alignment of the diamane fillers. The PMMA nanocomposites exhibit much better tensile performance when the diamane fillers are uniformly aligned along the in-plane direction of the filler. Additional investigations show that larger diamane filler is preferred without cross-linking, while smaller diamane filler should be considered when cross-linking is present. Overall, the impacts of different factors on the tensile properties of PMMA nanocomposites are analysed in-depth in this work, which provides atomistic insights for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites with desired mechanical properties.
Distinct Viscoelasticity of Nanoparticle-Tethering Polymers Revealed by Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Abstract:We employed nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to study viscoelastic properties of nano particle-tethering polymers. Effects of nanoparticle-polymer interaction and molecular architecture on the viscoelasticity are investigated. The results show that the nanoparticle-tethering polymers with attractive nanoparticle-polymer interaction exhibit enhanced storage and loss moduli relative to the homopolymers or bare nanoparticle/polymer blend. In addition, the storage and loss moduli of nanoparticle-tethering polymers can be further enhanced through tuning their molecular architectures, such as increasing the nanoparticle diameter or decreasing the polymer chain length: From the physical origin, the enhancement of dynamic moduli originates from the slowdown of polymer dynamics, which arises from the attractive nanoparticle-polymer interaction, the tethering covalent bond, and the obstacle of nanoparticles. The present work not only reveals the physical origin of distinct viscoelasticity of nanoparticle-tethering polymers, but also provides useful information for preparing advanced materials based on these organic/inorganic components.
Effective Enhancement of a Carbon Nanothread on the Mechanical Properties of the Polyethylene Nanocomposite

Abstract:The mechanical performance of nanomaterial-reinforced polymer nanocomposites is a prerequisite for their engineering implementations, which is largely determined by the interfacial load transfer efficiency. This work investigates the role of the nanofillers via molecular dynamics simulations under different deformation scenarios, mimicking a maximum and minimum load transfer scenario from the polymer matrix. On the basis of the polyethylene (PE) nanocomposite reinforced by a new nanofiller–carbon nanothread (NTH), we find that the loading conditions dominantly determine its enhancement effect on the mechanical properties of the PE nanocomposite. Under tensile deformation, the ultimate tensile strength of the PE nanocomposite receives around 61 to 211% increment when the filler deforms simultaneously with the PE matrix. However, such enhancement is largely suppressed when the NTH is deforming nonsimultaneously. Similar results are observed from the compressive deformation. Specifically, both morphology and functionalization are found to alter the enhancement effect from the NTH fillers, while also relying on the loading directions. Overall, this work provides an in-depth understanding of the role of the nanofiller. The observations signify the importance of establishing effective load transfer at the interface, which could benefit the design and fabrication of high-performance polymer nanocomposites.
Size-dependent nanoparticle dynamics in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposites

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored different size-dependent dynamics of NPs in semiflexible linear and ring polymer nanocomposites. Large NPs diffuse faster slightly in flexible ring polymer nanocomposites than in flexible linear polymer ones. However, the motions of large NPs in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposites with large bending energies are very slow and NPs exhibit the glassy state in which the NPs are all caged by the neighbouring semiflexible ring polymers, while large NPs in semiflexible linear polymer nanocomposites transport much faster than those in semiflexible ring polymer ones because rod-like structures of semiflexible linear polymers can favour the motions of NPs. Meanwhile, the diffusion coefficients Dpolymer of semiflexible ring polymers decrease monotonously with increasing bending energy Kb, while the minimum diffusion coefficient for semiflexible linear polymers occurs at the moderate bending energy such as Kb = 6, in which the semiflexible linear polymers hold the maximum entanglement density. NP size, polymer topological constraint as well as chain stiffness affect the dynamics of NPs in polymer nanocomposites seriously, and this investigation can help us understand the complicated dynamical behaviours for NPs in polymer nanocomposites.
Selective adsorption behavior of polymer at the polymer–nanoparticle interface

Abstract:Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the adsorption behavior of monodisperse and bidisperse polymer chains on the nanoparticle (NP) surface at various polymer-NP interactions, chain lengths, and stiffness. At a strong polymer-NP interaction, long chains preferentially occupy interfacial region and squeeze short chains out of the interfacial region. Semiflexible chains with proper stiffness wrap NPs dominantly in a helical fashion, whereas fully flexible chains constitute the surrounding matrix. As chain stiffness increases, the results of the preferential adsorption are the opposite. The chain-length or chain-stiffness-induced selective adsorption behavior of polymer chains in the polymer-NP interfacial region relies on a delicate competition between entropic and enthalpic contributions to the total free energy. These results could provide insights into polymer-NP interfacial adsorption behavior and guide the design of high-performance nanocomposites. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Aggregation–Dispersion Transition for Nanoparticles in Semiflexible Ring Polymer Nanocomposite Melts

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored the conformation transition of nanoparticles (NPs) in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts. A novel aggregation–dispersion transition for NPs in ring polymer nanocomposites occurs when the bending energy of ring chains increases. The conformations of flexible ring chains near NPs are radial distribution, and the entropic depletion interactions between a pair of NPs in flexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts are attractive, however, the rod-like ring chains wrap around the NPs and the entropic depletion interactions between NPs in rod-like ring polymer melts are repulsive. The aggregation-dispersion transition for NPs induced by chain topology in polymer nanocomposites can provide a new access to achieve miscibility in producing high-performance polymer–nanoparticle composites by simply varying the topological structure of polymers.

Abstract:The well control over the cell-nanoparticle interaction can be of great importance and necessity for different biomedical applications. In this work, we propose a new and simple way (i.e., polymeric tether) to tuning the interaction between nanoparticles and cell membranes by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. It is found that the linked nanoparticles (via polymeric tether) can show some cooperation during the cellular uptake and thereby have a higher wrapping degree than the single nanoparticle. The effect of the property of the polymer on the wrapping is also investigated, and it is found that the length, rigidity, and hydrophobicity of the polymer play an important role. More interestingly, the uptake of linked nanoparticles could be adjusted to the firm adhesion via two rigid polymeric tethers. The present study may provide some useful guidelines for novel design of functional nanomaterials in the experiments.
Rheological Behaviors of Polymers with Nanoparticles Tethered at Each End

Abstract:The polymer with nanoparticles tethered at each end is a unique model for unraveling the effect of chain ends on the polymer dynamics. We investigated the rheological behavior of this kind of polymer by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The effect of polymer lengths and nanoparticle radii on the complex moduli and viscosity was examined. The dependence of complex moduli on the frequency becomes less pronounced as the polymer is short or the nanoparticle is large. The shear thinning behavior was revealed for these systems, and the scaling exponent of complex viscosity with respect to the frequency was found to change from -1/2 to -3/4 as the polymer shortens or the nanoparticle enlarges. The rheological behavior was further explained by analyzing the mean square distance of nanoparticles. The simulation results were compared with the existing experimental finding, showing an agreement. The work provides information for understanding the chain end effect on polymer rheology.

Abstract:Enhancing the compatibility of immiscible polymer blends is crucial to achieving optimized performance for polymer materials. This work presents a comprehensive investigation into the effect of copolymer-tethered nanoparticles (NPs) on the compatibilization of immiscible polystyrene/polymethyl methacrylate (PS/PMMA) blends. Abstract:Introducing carbon nanotubes or graphene sheets into polymer matrices has received lots of scientific and technological attention. For the first time, we report a new kind of polymer nanocomposite (PNC) by means of employing anisotropic nanoparticles (NPs) as netpoints (referred to as an end-linked system), namely with NPs acting as netpoints to chemically connect the dual end-groups of each polymer chain to form a network. By taking advantage of this strategy, the anisotropic NPs can be uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix, with the NPs being separated via the connected polymer chains. And the separation distance between NPs, the stress-strain behavior and the dynamic hysteresis loss (HL) can be manipulated by varying the temperature and the polymer chain flexibility. Meanwhile, the physically mixed system is investigated by changing the interaction strength between polymer and NPs, and the temperature. It is emphasized that compared to the physically mixed system, the end-linked system which employs carbon nanotubes or graphene as netpoints possesses good thermal stability because of its thermodynamically stable morphology, exhibiting both excellent static and dynamic mechanical properties. These results help us to design and fabricate high performance and multi-functional PNCs filled with carbon nanotubes or graphene, facilitating the potentially large industrial application of these nanomaterials.

Abstract:Segmental and chain dynamics of the type-A polyethers tethered with nonsticky polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane molecular nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated experimentally by a combination of broadband dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and pulsed -field-gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, to provide a fundamental understanding of the effects of chain ends and topology on the hierarchical dynamics of polymers. Series of poly(1,2-butylene oxide)s of a narrow molecular weight distribution with the MNPs tethered at one or two chain ends (denoted as P-B and P-B-P) or tethered at the side (denoted as P -s-B) have been elaborately designed and synthesized. Both dielectric segmental and chain relaxations of P-B and P-B-P were found to be retarded by the attachment of the MNPs at the ends. In contrast to traditional polymer glass transition behaviors, their dielectric glass transition temperatures (Tg) decrease with an increase in the molecular weight until saturated at the high-molecular weight limit, which has been ascribed to the relatively low mobility of the MNPs in comparison to those of the usual polymer end segments. The Flory-Fox equation has been modified to depict the tendency of Tg versus molecular weight for P-B and P-B-P, which yields the equivalent number of segments for chain extension to account for the end effects of the MNPs on the segmental level. On the chain length scale, we found that the dielectric and rheological behaviors of the unentangled P-B and P-B-P complied with the predictions of the Rouse model in terms of the scaling law of the longest relaxation time versus the effective molecular weight and the relaxation spectra resolved in the low-p mode region, whereas a crossover from the Rouse to the reptation behavior was also observed. 29Si PFG NMR spectroscopy has been utilized to selectively probe the diffusion of the MNPs attached to the polymers. The unique role of the MNP and its influence on the dynamics of polymers were further discussed in the context of hierarchically branched polymers. In contrast, the rheological behaviors of P -s-B with side-tethered MNPs revealed gradual disentangling of the chains with an increase in the number of MNPs and accelerated chain relaxation in comparison with that of P -B-P, reflecting the distinct topology effects of the MNPs on the polymer dynamics.
Designing Polymer Nanocomposites with A Semi-Interpenetrating or Interpenetrating Network Structure: Toward Enhanced Mechanical Properties

Abstract:Using short polymer chains and through molecular dynamics simulation, we designed a well-dispersed nanoparticle (NP) network, which was then incorporated with the polymer matrix. First, we examined the effects of the dual-end grafted chains flexibility and density on the spatial distribution of this particular polymer nanocomposites system. By changing the interaction strength between the matrix polymer chains and the dual-end grafted chains in the semi-interpenetrating network system (NP network), we analyzed the interpenetration state between the linear polymer matrix and the NP network via calculating the total interfacial interaction energy. Moreover, the uniaxial tensile stress-strain and orientation behavior influenced by the interaction strength between the matrix polymer and the grafted chains were investigated for both the semi-interpenetrating network system and the interpenetrating network system (NP network and matrix network). Furthermore, for the interpenetrating network system, we modulated the integrity of the NP network ranging from 0% to 100%, corresponding to the gradual transition of the dispersion morphology of the NPs from the aggregation state to the uniform dispersion state, to examine the effect of the NP network on the tensile mechanical behavior. In particular, by simulating the dynamic shear process in the semi-interpenetrating network system, the composites were found to exhibit a lower non-linear behavior (the famous Payne effect), a higher storage modulus, and a lower tangent loss at large strain amplitude with increasing NP network integrity. In general, our results could provide a new approach for the design of high-performance polymer nanocomposites by taking advantage of the semi-interpenetrating or interpenetrating network reinforcing structure.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Polymers Tethered with Nanoparticles at Two Ends

Abstract:The polymer tethered with nanoparticles at two ends is a preferred molecular model for studying the effect of the chain end on the relaxation behavior of polymers. We constructed a polymer model with two nanoparticles tethered at each end and used coarse-grained molecular dynamics to study the characteristic temperature and relaxation behavior of these polymers. The effects of nanoparticle radius and polymer length on the glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature, and dielectric properties were examined. We found that two apparent transitions occur during the annealing. The high-temperature transition corresponds to the crystallization due to the existence of nanoparticles at ends, and the low-temperature transition is the glass transition related to polymer chains. The presence of nanoparticles at both ends of the polymer can delay the relaxation of the polymer chain and promote crystallization, resulting in an increase in the glass transition temperature and crystallization temperature of the polymer as the nanoparticle becomes large or the polymer chain shortens. The chain relaxation was further studied by calculating the relaxation correlation functions and dielectric relaxation spectra. The work revealed that the dielectric loss peak shifts towards low frequencies as the nanoparticle radius increases or the polymer chain length decreases. We finally compared the simulation results with existing experimental findings, and an agreement was achieved. The work can deepen the understanding of the structure and properties of the polymer with two nanoparticles tethered at each end. [GRAPHICS] .
Tuning The Mechanical Properties Of Polymer Nanocomposites Filled With Grafted Nanoparticles By Varying The Grafted Chain Length And Flexibility

Abstract:By employing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation, we simulate the spatial organization of the polymer-grafted nanoparticles (NPs) in homopolymer matrix and the resulting mechanical performance, by particularly regulating the grafted chain length and flexibility. The morphologies ranging from the agglomerate, cylinder, sheet, and string to full dispersion are observed, by gradually increasing the grafted chain length. The radial distribution function and the total interaction energy between NPs are calculated. Meanwhile, the stress-strain behavior of each morphology and the morphological evolution during the uniaxial tension are simulated. In particular, the sheet structure exhibits the best mechanical reinforcement compared to other morphologies. In addition, the change of the grafted chain flexibility to semi-flexibility leads to the variation of the morphology. We also find that at long grafted chain length, the stress-strain behavior of the system with the semi-flexible grafted chain begins to exceed that of the system with the flexible grafted chain, attributed to the physical inter-locking interaction between the matrix and grafted polymer chains. A similar transition trend is as well found in the presence of the interfacial chemical couplings between grafted and matrix polymer chains. In general, this work is expected to help to design and fabricate high performance polymer nanocomposites filled with grafted NPs with excellent and controllable mechanical properties.
Ultrasmall Nanoparticles Diluted Chain Entanglement in Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract:Nanoparticle-polymer composites exhibit unusual mechanical properties and chain dynamics when the nanoparticle size is smaller than the entanglement mesh size of the matrix polymer chains, corresponding to the ultrasmall regime defined by de Gennes. However, the mechanism is still ambiguous due to the lack of suitable model systems. Here, we develop an ultrasmall nanoparticle system by using a bimodal grafting strategy to graft both short alkyl chains and long polystyrene chains onto the polyoxometalate molecular nanoparticles with a tunable repulsive potential between the nanoparticles, thus facilitating their uniform dispersion in polystyrene matrices. Linear viscoelasticity of the resultant nanocomposites changes with increasing the filler content, which shows a decrease in both plateau modulus and terminal relaxation time, indicative of a dilution effect of the nanoparticles. Namely, the entanglement network becomes sparser with increasing the filler content.

Abstract:The introduction of nanoparticles (NPs) presents boundless possibilities for enhancing the performance of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). Consequently, the design of novel NPs becomes of paramount significance for PNCs. In our study, we employ the dumbbell two-component model of Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) and design rigid-soft JNPs as fillers. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we systematically investigate the dispersion, dynamics, and mechanical properties of these novel PNCs. First, we determine the optimal dispersion conditions by studying r(cutoff) and epsilon(np). The simulation indicates that when the interaction between polymer chains and JNPs is a repulsive potential, the JNPs tend to aggregate together, forming a cluster with soft NPs inside and rigid NPs outside. Conversely, under attractive interactions, JNPs show superior dispersion uniformity compared to the repulsive system, and as epsilon(np) increases, the dispersion improves. Then, the mean square displacement (MSD) indicates that JNPs effectively impede the mobility of polymer chains, with the degree of hindrance increasing as epsilon(np) grows; this effect is more pronounced in attractive systems. Comparing JNPs of different particle sizes, we find that smaller JNP systems exhibit higher temperature sensitivity. Furthermore, there exists a critical particle size (D-np approximate to 5 sigma) under a constant filling fraction at which the NPs exert the most pronounced restriction effect on the polymer. Next, upon examining the mechanical behavior, we find that the rigid-soft JNPs demonstrate notable elasticity and variability compared to traditional NPs. This observation is confirmed through measurements of the bond orientation and mean square radius of gyration of the soft segments of JNPs. Tailoring the Mechanical Properties of Polymer Nanocomposites Via Interfacial Engineering

Abstract:The improvement of mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) has been studied for many years, with the main focus on the structure of the nanofillers. Much less effort has been devoted to unraveling the factors controlling the structure of the grafted chains. Herein, through coarse-grained molecular-dynamics simulations, we have successfully fabricated an ideal, mechanically-interlocked composite structure composed of end-functionalized chains grafted to the nanoparticle surface forming rings and making the matrix chains thread through these rings. Depending on the details of the grafting, the reinforcement effect can be remarkable, improving the tensile stress of the system significantly up to 700%. Meanwhile, anisotropy of the system's mechanical response is also observed. Furthermore, the influence of the grafted chain distribution on the mechanical properties of the system has been investigated as well. We observe that the mechanical properties of the system are closely related to the total number of the beads in the grafted chains or the synergistic effect between the length and density of the grafted chains leads to no significant difference in the performance of systems. At constant grafting density, the mechanical properties of the systems correlate negatively to the grafted chain length. In general, our study should help to design and fabricate high-performance PNCs with excellent mechanical properties.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of Polymer Nanocomposites with Controllable Dispersion of Spherical Nanoparticles

Abstract:Through coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation, we construct a novel kind of end-linked polymer network by employing dual end-functionalized polymer chains that chemically attach to the surface of nanoparticles (NPs), so that the NPs act as large cross-linkers. We examine the effects of the length and flexibility of polymer chains on the dispersion of NPs, and the effect of the chain length on the stress-strain behavior and the segment orientation during the deformation process. We find that the stress upturn becomes more prominent with the decrease of the chain length, attributed to the limited extensibility of the chain strand connecting two neighboring NPs. In addition, this end linked polymer nanocomposite (PNC) is shown to have a temperature-dependent stress-strain behavior that is contrary to traditional physically mixed PNCs, whose mechanical properties deteriorate with increasing temperature. This is due to the stability of the dispersion of NPs and higher entropic elasticity at higher temperature for the former, while the latter has poorer interfacial interaction at higher temperature, leading to less reinforcing efficiency. By imposing a dynamic oscillatory shear deformation, we obtain a dynamic hysteresis loop for end-linked and physically mixed dispersions. Interestingly, the end-linked system possesses a much smaller hysteresis loss than does the physically mixed system, with the latter exhibiting a more prominent decrease with increasing temperature, due to less interfacial contact. Our results demonstrate that end-linked PNCs combine attractive static and dynamic mechanical properties and exhibit an unusual response to temperature, which could find potential applications in the future.
