Abstract:Abstract In the history of Chinese literature, the Zhuangzi authors were the first to grant a voice to diverse forms of life, among them a snake, a tree, a dead man, a divine turtle, and even the wind. What exactly is the interest of incorporating nonhuman protagonists in brief literary fictions? Was there something at stake when trying out this pioneering narrative technique, or was it just for the sake of literary innovation and entertainment? Through a detailed analysis of a set of concise narratives, this study uncovers a consistent critique of the religious institutions (chiefly divination and sacrifice), as well as the economic practices prevalent during the Warring States period. It aims to demonstrate that the Zhuangzi's comprehensive critique of the Zhou cultural order achieves its “hearability” through a recurrent use of striking dualities, including day and night, dream and wakefulness, and humans and nonhumans. A heretofore silent and passive community of living beings raises its voice and is able to challenge the well-established discourse proclaiming human sovereignty over the natural world. These voices and the themes they raise serve, among other things, as a literary strategy intended to illuminate the universality of violence and the criminal essence of human culture (wen 文).

Abstract:The origin of the Inner Chapters' seven titles in Zhuangzi is a puzzle in modern academic circles.Mr.Zhang Hengshou and Cui Dahua already put forth their different opinions.Considering the ideological trend in different period of the Han Dynasty,by comparing the thought of Huainanzi and the interal spiritual inclination of the seven titles combined together,and taking different status and thought of Liu An and Liu Xiang into account,we can infer that it is not Liu Xiang,but probably Liu An who titled the Inner Chapters.

Abstract:In this article we focus on the famous dialogue between Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huizi 惠子 concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (in particular the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars have understood qing in this exchange as referring to "feelings" or "emotions." We take issue with such readings. First, we demonstrate that, while Huizi probably understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi's view is that having qing is connected with making shifei 是非 judgments whereas having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, especially the shengren. What follows is that the expression wuqing 無情 should not be identified as a "doctrine of nonemotion." Instead, wuqing implies that Zhuangzi advises us to lead a life of tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these peaceful attitudes are associated with the idea of wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new reading of Ruan Ji’s Essay on Zhuangzi.Scholars have argued that Ruan’s essay honored Taoist spontaneity and criticized Confucian moral teachings.However,this paper argues that written around 247,Ruan’s essay actually offered a fresh interpretation of Zhuang Zi’s philosophy in that it considered the idea of equality of all things as the main thread that underlies Zhuang Zi’s thought.Thus Ruan attempted to harmonize the “inner-worldly” Confucian moral teachings and the “other-worldly”Taoist pursuit of spontaneity.In this regard,Ruan’s understanding of Zhuangzi anticipated the interpretations of Xiang Xiu and Guo Xiang on Zhuangzi that came decades later.

Abstract:From the first research paper "the January Fresh Wind" on Yu Hua to May,2007,the research work on Yu Hua has developed for 23 years.Up to the present,the studies are launched form five aspects: First,in the aspect of the writer's literature view,the "spirit of truth" which Yu Hua advocates and the departure of his novels from the present situation by "the false form" are the main issues.Second,it is difficult to reach a consensus on the vanguard of the "pioneer spirit" and creative transformation.Third,in his novels' performance world,the critics have discovered several key words: violence,death,misery,desire.Fourth,in the research of the text form,the researchers constantly describe the works by narration language,the genre subversion,the repetition narrates,and such studies show "thinning" tendency.Fifth,in the impact of local and foreign levels,Lu Xun,Kawabata and Kafka are undoubtedly the objects which researchers are ready to compare with Yu Hua.

Abstract:Emotion Review, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 189-199, July 2023. The Zhuangzi, a 4th century BCE Daoist text, is sceptical about the political culture of its time. Those who debated conceptions of a good life were hostile to the views of others. They were intolerant and at times contemptuous of others who did not embody their values. In contrast to such negativity, the Zhuangzi promotes equanimity. The equanimity of the sagely person is grounded in a balance she maintains between engagement and withdrawal. Engaging critically, she problematises the lack of diversity in their options for a good life. By withdrawing, she refuses to be party to the squabbles that perpetuate intolerance. The paper aims to show how equanimity is possible, thereby articulating a new angle on emotions in the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:Abstract Within a multimodal framework, this study investigates the images of Zhuangzi (author of the Chinese Classic 莊子 Zhuangzi ) represented by the front covers of both the comic adaptation 莊子説 Zhuangzi Shuo and its three translations. It is found these covers represent different images of Zhuangzi through processes of recontextualization. In the Chinese adaptation Zhuangzi Shuo , Zhuangzi, while being emphasized as a revered ancient Chinese philosopher, is remolded from an author into a funny speaker absorbed in expressing his thoughts regardless of whether there is any audience. In Zhuangzi Speaks , an English translation published in America, Zhuangzi is repackaged as a friendly interlocutor sharing with readers his thoughts. In The Sayings of Zhuang Zi , another English translation published in Singapore, Zhuangzi is reshaped as a historical figure for detached observation, one frustrated by chaos in reality and investing his thought into his writing. In Lehrsprüche des Dschuang Dsi , a German translation translated indirectly from the Singaporean one, Zhuangzi, while being a historical figure for detached observation as well, is re-reshaped as a reputable Chinese sage, who is old-fashioned but accessible. Differences in these images can be ascribed to diverse perceptions of comics and Zhuangzi in the countries concerned.

Abstract:Abstract The secret of the “cumulative structure,” one of Zhuangzi's favorite rhetorical devices, is “adding.” To add is not to repeat but to arrange meanings of different shapes in various incremental parallel structures. This effective tool is used in his chapter titled “The Great and Venerable Teacher” to explicate the highest order of true understanding of the Way, or zhenzhi, and to symbolize the climactic pursuit of the Daoist truth. Vertically the Daoist epistemological value system, with the zhenzhi at its apex, is extended into a graphic hierarchy; horizontally the step-by-step progressive process of the attainment of this true knowledge is sometimes subjected to contemplative examination and sometimes compressed along the axle of time flow into an intense moment of sudden enlightenment. Since the cumulative structure works as a living body of correlation, the palpable contour of which corresponds to the message it conveys, it enables the readers to experience—not just to understand—Zhuangzi's teaching.
The Possibility of Asking about Dao: On the Philosophical Significance of Dialogue in the Zhuangzi

Abstract:In contrast to the aphoristic style of the Daodejing, Zhuangzi is known for its abundant use of dialogues. These dialogues, especially those found in chapters 21 and 22, are consciously organized around the theme of "asking about Dao". They bring together the diverse propositions about the Dao that are found independently throughout the Daodejing. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the fact that Zhuangzi consciously orders these propositions in terms of the different levels of knowledge of Dao. Within this theoretical framework, Zhuangzi further ranks the questions and answers regarding these propositions. Certain dialogues are partly dismissed because both participants demonstrate a flawed and shallow understanding of the Dao, while other questions and answers are acknowledged and appreciated for their correct and profound understanding of it. There is a strict corresponding relationship between levels of knowledge of Dao and different attitudes toward dialogues in it. Therefore, the examination of the dialogues about the Dao reveals that Zhuangzi places explicit emphasis on the knowledge of the Dao compared to the Daodejing, which also sheds light on Zhuangzi's distinctive awareness of the problems surrounding this key concept.

Abstract:In this study, I clarify and defend the critique of the 'sages' and 'robbers' that is found in the Zhuangzi . As detailed in Chapter 8 of the Zhuangzi , both the (non-Daoist) 'sages' and 'robbers' are equally responsible for society's ills. This is because both the 'sages' and 'robbers' are perceptually alienated from nature. This perceptual alienation involves the inability to perceive nature as fundamentally indeterminate ( wu , 無). The Daoist alternative to the 'sages' and 'robbers' is to cultivate awareness of our interdependence with nature. This study calls this process an 'attunement to nature' or, as Chapter 8 describes it, to not depart from 'the actuality of their endowed circumstances' (其性命之情) and to 'see oneself when you see others/things' (自見而見彼). Attunement involves an awareness of how nature primordially forms an indeterminate continuum ( wu ).

Abstract:Abstract In the last century, Western jargon and methodologies have overwhelmed the study of early Chinese texts. In an attempt to somewhat redress the balance, this paper retrieves a core notion from the Zhuangzi , “disputation” ( bian 辯 ) or “distinctions” ( bian 辨 ), to reflect upon a contemporary Western debate, namely about the exclusion of non-Western sources at philosophy departments. The detailed analysis of one anecdote about two states fighting each other on the horns of a snail leads to a view on disputation and its limits. By applying these insights to the “legitimacy of Chinese philosophy” debate, the Zhuangzi can inspire insights and attitudes that tend to be overlooked.

Abstract:Zhouyi,a philosophic literature with rich and profound meanings,has an in-depth discussion on discourse action,which is mainly shown in three aspects.First,as to the relations between speech and effect,a good discourse act is an important way to build sound morality such as honesty.Speech action is one of the key factors deciding the moral character of a man of honor.Zhouyi has a characteristic of being"beautiful in language"and"profound in meaning". Speech action is found to be"endless"as well.The second aspect is about the relations between utterance and context.Speech act is closely related to the social state.At the same time,special attention should be given to speaker's mentality and his/her opportunity to speak so as to obtain the anticipated results.Finally,it is emphasized that utterance should really mean something and should be faithful to facts."Inhumanity"and"sycophancy"are criticized,thus deepening the meaning of faithfulness,justice and humanity in the thought of Confucian discourses.

Abstract:Z{uphu} Xi (1130–1200) was one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Chinese philosophy. From the beginning of the fourteenth century until 1905, when the examination system was abolished, his and C{upheng} Yi’s interpretations of the Confucian Classics were regarded as orthodox and served as the basis of civil service examinations and intellectual standards for the Chinese literati. His influence was not limited to China, as his thoughts became orthodoxy in Korea and in some important schools of thought in Japan (see Chan). Because of his great contribution to culture, Z{uphu} Xi has been honored as Zhuzi or Z{uphu} Fuzi. This paper will review contemporary Chinese studies of Zhuzi, particularly of his philosophy, that have been conducted in mainland China since 1980.

Abstract:In this paper the author aims to explore the philosophical essence presented in Qi Wu Lun of ZhuangZi and discusses some approaches to better understanding the subtleness of the theme and different interpretations of some key concepts in Qi Wu Lun.The author goes further by making a comparative study between some seemingly contradictory concepts presented by Qi Wu Lun and Xiao yao you respectively and reveals a fundamental harmony between them.Finally,the author proposes some reading strategies for understanding of philosophical ideas in ZhuangZi: start with the fables first and then study the inertial articles,the most recommendable of which is to read Qi Wu Lu and Xiao yao you comparatively so as to develop one's concrete and abstract logic reasoning competency.

Abstract:New learning of studies of the Classics in the Song Dynasty began with Liu Chang's The Gong Shibi Commentary, and was greatly encouraged by Wang Zhi's Shi Zong Wen. Wang's interpretations of the classics are sometimes affected by his admiration for Tao Qian's lifestyle of seclusion. The outstanding achievement of Shi Zong Wen lies in the two interpretation methods in searching for meaning in accordance with feelings. The first method is that he degrades The Book of Songs and brings it to the category of history to establish connection with historical events and literary works of later ages; and the second is that the current customs and life experience are employed for the purpose of interpretation, to show that human feelings from ancient times do not differ much from those of the present.

Abstract:Contemporary discussions of xing are often inspired by the Confucian tradition, but recent studies have brought the Zhuangzi 莊子 to the table as a viable alternative. In this essay, I present three different accounts of xing 性 in the Outer Chapters: (1) the primitivists who emphasize body vitality and simple life, (2) the Huang-Lao 黃老 school that emphasizes the balance among different things and the overall cosmological order, and (3) skill stories that look at individual skill masters rather than people in general or the role of the human species in the cosmos, entertain only the descriptive dimension of xing , and cast doubt on the normative status of xing . These three accounts can be read as responding to each other, and each shares certain themes with the Inner Chapters in different ways. Together, they demonstrate the complexity of the Zhuangzi 's view on xing and complicate attempts of cross-textual comparison.

Abstract:Based on ZhuXi’s four kinds of commentation of The Analects,Chap 1. this paper focuses on Zhu’s ideas, standards and methods in interpreting the classical texts. ZhuXi insists on the idea of searching for the truth. As to the standards, Zhu’integrates and surpasses Song Learnings represented respectively by Cheng Brothers and Wang Anshi on the basis of philology and of looking for the end-result of philosophy. Apart from the Style of answer and question, ZhuXi also reaches the unification of means and ideas with the methods of intension analysis, annotation measure, citing principle, symbolizing comparison etc.
