Abstract:Ephemeris parameters of gamma ray pulsar Geminga have been revised using EGRET. Timing and imaging analyses show that the majority emission of Geminga are in phase region around the first peak in 10–30 MeV during COMPTEL VP1. No turn off of spectrum appear at energies below 30 MeV.

Abstract:Considering the stability of Geminga, we have made aphase correlation analysis of the data from four viewing periods ofEGRET which were separated by long time intervals. The results ofphase cross correlation are similar to those obtained byparameter searching using more EGRET data. This indicates that thephase cross correlation method could be applied to deriving moreaccurate parameters of stable gamma ray pulsars.

Abstract:Timing analyses of gamma-ray pulsar Geminga were made to check its rotating stability using released energetic gamma-ray experiment (EGRET) data. Phase motions of Geminga were found from EGRET data in 1995. Joint analysis of parameters searching and bootstrap testing showed that the parameters are getting worse when including EGRET data in 1995. Combination of these results may indicate that a small glitch of Geminga occured in 1995.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the stability of the spin and frequency variations of Geminga, we have made a phase-correlation analysis of EGRET data from four widely sepataed observing periods. The results are similar to those obtained from period folding over a much longer data set, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the phase-correlation method in the derivation of the timing parameters of stable γ-ray pulsars.

Abstract:We present the results of 71.6 hours of observations of the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) with the VERITAS very-high-energy gamma-ray telescope array. Data taken with VERITAS between November 2007 and February 2013 were phase-folded using a Geminga pulsar timing solution derived from data recorded by the XMM-\emph{Newton} and \emph{Fermi}-LAT space telescopes. No significant pulsed emission above 100 GeV is observed, and we report upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the integral flux above 135 GeV (spectral analysis threshold) of 4.0$\times10^{-13}$ s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 1.7$\times10^{-13}$ s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the two principal peaks in the emission profile. These upper limits, placed in context with phase-resolved spectral energy distributions determined from five years of data from the \emph{Fermi}-LAT, constrain possible hardening of the Geminga pulsar emission spectra above $\sim$50 GeV.

Abstract:We have measured the right ascension of Geminga at different epochs by comparing the absolute phases between the different γ-ray observations. These values show that the right-ascension component of the proper motion of Geminga is 0.226±0.03 arcsec per year, which is consistent with that of G″, the most probable optical counterpart, thus independently confirming the correspondence between G″ and Geminga.
The gamma-ray spectrum of Geminga and the inverse Compton model of pulsar high energy emission

Abstract:We reanalyze the Fermi spectra of the Geminga and Vela pulsars. We find that the spectrum of Geminga above the break is exceptionally well approximated by a simple power law without the exponential cut-off, making Geminga's spectrum similar to that of Crab. Vela's broadband gamma-ray spectrum is equally well fit with both the exponential cut-off and the double power law shapes. In the broadband double power-law fits, for a typical Fermi spectrum of a bright \gamma-ray pulsar, most of the errors accumulate due to the arbitrary parametrization of the spectral roll-off. In addition, a power law with an exponential cut-off gives an acceptable fit for the underlying double power-law spectrum for a very broad range of parameters, making such fitting procedures insensitive to the underlying Fermi photon spectrum. Our results have important implications for the mechanism of pulsar high energy emission. A number of observed properties of \gamma-ray pulsars, i.e., the broken power law spectra without exponential cut-offs and stretching in case of Crab beyond the maximal curvature limit, spectral breaks close to or exceeding the maximal breaks due to curvature emission, a Crab patterns of relative intensities of the leading and trailing pulses repeated in the X-ray and \gamma-ray regions, all point to the inverse Compton origin of the high energy emission from majority of pulsars.

Abstract:A search for UHE gamma-rays from 13 candidate point sources observable in the northern hemisphere (the Crab Nebula and Pulsar, Cygnus X-3, Hercules X-1, Geminga and others) has been performed by the EAS-TOP array during four years of operation since January 1989 to December 1993, at different energy thresholds (E0 = 30–300 TeV). DC, periodic and sporadic emissions have been studied, and no evidence for significant excesses has been found from any of these searches. The derived 90% c.l. upper limits to the d.c. flux, for a source culminating at the zenith such as Cygnus X-3, are Φ(E > 230 TeV) < 2 × 10−14 cm−2 s−1, Φ(E > 90 TeV) < 4.1 × 10−14 cm−2 s−1 and Φ(E > 25 TeV) < 1.9 × 10−13 cm−2 s−1. The excess from the Crab Nebula of February 23, 1989, as reported by the EAS-TOP, Baksan and KGF arrays, remains the only sporadic excess detected with statistically significant confidence level (probability of background imitation ≈ 10−5).

Abstract:Geminga is an enigmatic radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar located at a mere 250 pc distance from Earth. Extended very-high-energy gamma-ray emission around the pulsar was discovered by Milagro and later confirmed by HAWC, which are both water Cherenkov detector-based experiments. However, evidence for the Geminga pulsar wind nebula in gamma rays has long evaded detection by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) despite targeted observations. The detection of gamma-ray emission on angular scales > 2 deg poses a considerable challenge for the background estimation in IACT data analysis. With recent developments in understanding the complementary background estimation techniques of water Cherenkov and atmospheric Cherenkov instruments, the H.E.S.S. IACT array can now confirm the detection of highly extended gamma-ray emission around the Geminga pulsar with a radius of at least 3 deg in the energy range 0.5-40 TeV. We find no indications for statistically significant asymmetries or energy-dependent morphology. A flux normalisation of $(2.8\pm0.7)\times10^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$TeV$^{-1}$ at 1 TeV is obtained within a 1 deg radius region around the pulsar. To investigate the particle transport within the halo of energetic leptons around the pulsar, we fitted an electron diffusion model to the data. The normalisation of the diffusion coefficient obtained of $D_0 = 7.6^{+1.5}_{-1.2} \times 10^{27}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$, at an electron energy of 100 TeV, is compatible with values previously reported for the pulsar halo around Geminga, which is considerably below the Galactic average.

New estimate for the contribution of the Geminga pulsar to the positron excess

Abstract:The origin of the positron excess is one of the most intriguing mysteries in astroparticle physics. The recent discovery of extended $\gamma$-ray halos around the pulsars Geminga, Monogem and PSR J0621+3755 have brought indirect evidence that pulsar wind nebulae accelerate $e^{\pm}$ up to very-high-energy. While the precision of previous data does not permit precise evaluation of the parameters for the pulsars, we are able to find the more precise shape of the injection spectrum using new data released by HAWC and LHAASO in 2020 and 2021. We find that this is well fitten by a power-law with an exponential cutoff. The spectral index is quite hard with values around 1 while the cutoff energy is roughly 100 TeV. We also derive the strength of the diffusion coefficient around the pulsars finding that it is two orders of magnitude lower than the average of the Galaxy. Finally, we use the above mentioned results to estimate the contribution of Geminga to the positron excess. This source alone can contribute to the entire positron excess at around 1 TeV.

Abstract:The detection of radio emission from the gamma-ray pulsar J1836+5925 is reported. Rare events of radio emission from this object have been recorded with the LPA radio telescope at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory. A two- or three-component integrated profile and very narrow individual pulses are a peculiarity of the radio emission from the pulsar J1836+5925. The presence of an interpulse is also possible. We have measured the dispersion measure, pc cm , and estimated the distance to the pulsar, 1.5 kpc. The flux density and the lower limit on the spectral index have been estimated.

Geminga's pulsar halo: an X-ray view

Abstract:Geminga is the first pulsar around which a remarkable TeV gamma-ray halo extending over a few degrees was discovered by MILAGRO, HAWC and later by H.E.S.S., and by Fermi-LAT in the GeV band. More middle-aged pulsars have exhibited gamma-ray halos, and they are now recognized as an emerging class of Galactic gamma-ray sources. The emission appears in the late evolution stage of pulsars, and is most plausibly explained by inverse Compton scattering of CMB and interstellar photons by relativistic electrons and positrons escaping from the pulsar wind nebulae. These observations pose a number of theoretical challenges. Tackling these questions requires constraining the ambient magnetic field properties, which can be achieved through X-ray observations. If the gamma-ray halos originate from a distribution of highly energetic electrons, synchrotron losses in the ambient magnetic fields of the same particles are expected to produce a diffuse X-ray emission with a similar spatial extension. We present the most comprehensive X-ray study of the Geminga pulsar halo to date, utilising archival data from XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. Our X-ray analysis covers a broad bandwidth ($0.5\rm{-}79$ keV) and large field of view ($\sim 4^\circ$) for the first time. This is achieved by accurately measuring the background over the entire field of view, and taking into account both focused and stray-light X-ray photons with NuSTAR. We find no significant emission and set robust constraints on the X-ray halo flux. These are translated to stringent constraints on the ambient magnetic field strength and the diffusion coefficient by using a physical model considering particle injection, diffusion and cooling over the pulsar's lifetime, which is tuned by fitting multi-wavelength data. Our novel methodology for modelling and searching for synchrotron X-ray halos can be applied to other pulsar halo candidates.

Image Analyses of COMPTEL Data Using a Direct Demodulation Method

Abstract:The Compton Gamma-Ray Telescope, COMPTEL/CGRO, works in the energy range of 0.75-30MeV.We have analyzed COMPTEL/CGRO #1 data using the direct demodulation method. The Gamma-ray source Crab was located exactly; the Crab and the quasar PKS0528+134 which could not be resolved by the maximum likelihood method were resolved completely in the energy range 10-30MeV. The imaging results are better than that using traditional methods. The image analys is of phase resolved data of the gamma-ray pulsar Geminga shows that Geminga still has emission in the energy range 10-30MeV and the emission comes mainly from the phase region peak 1. We draw a conclusion from this work that the application of the direct demodulation method to the image analysis of Compton Telescope data is feasible.
Modelling of highly extended Gamma-ray emission around the Geminga Pulsar as detected with H.E.S.S

Abstract:Geminga is an enigmatic radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar located at a mere 250 pc distance from Earth. However, the detection of extended TeV gamma-ray emission around the Geminga pulsar has proven challenging for IACTs due to the angular scale exceeding the typical field-of-view. By detailed studies of background estimation techniques and characterising systematic effects, a detection of highly extended TeV gamma-ray emission could be confirmed by the H.E.S.S. IACT array. Building on the previously announced detection, in this contribution we further characterise the emission and apply an electron diffusion model to the combined gamma-ray data from the H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments, as well as X-ray data from XMM-Newton.

Abstract:It has long been suggested that nearby pulsars like Geminga and PSR~B0656+14 are the leading candidate sources of the 10-1000 GeV cosmic-ray positron excess measured by PAMELA and other experiments. The recent measurement of surface brightness profile of TeV nebulae surrounding these two pulsars by High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) suggests inefficient diffusion of particles from the sources, giving rise to a debate on the pulsar interpretation of the cosmic-ray positron excess. Here we argue that GeV observations provide more direct constraints on the positron density in the TeV nebulae in the energy range of 10-1000 GeV and hence on the origin of the observed positron excess. Motivated by this, we search for GeV emission from the TeV nebulae with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). No spatially-extended GeV emission is detected from these two TeV nebulae, suggesting a relatively low density of GeV electrons/positrons in the TeV nebulae. A joint modelling of the data from HAWC and textsl{Fermi}-LAT disfavors Geminga and PSR~B0656+14 as the dominant source of the positron excess observed at Earth.

Abstract:In the inner annular gap (IAG) model the γ-ray radiation sources are suggested to be located close to the null charge surface (NCS). A method to explore two geometric parameters (κ,λ) of the IAG model is given in this paper. Pulsar population statistics are proposed to test the radiation locations of γ-ray pulsars. Within the IAG model, predictions for the GLAST observation of γ-ray pulsars are also made.
Gamma-Ray Emission Properties from Mature Pulsars in the Galaxy and in the Gould Belt

Abstract:We study the γ-ray emission properties of pulsars by using a new self-consistent outer gap model. The outer gap can exist in pulsars older than 1 million yr if the effect of magnetic inclination angle, as well as the average properties of the outer gap, are considered. The mature γ-ray pulsars, whose ages are between 0.3 and 3 million yr, are able to move up to high Galactic latitude. Moreover, their γ-ray luminosities are weaker, and their spectra are significantly softer than those of younger γ-ray pulsars in the Galactic plane. We use a Monte Carlo method to simulate the statistical properties of γ-ray pulsars in the Galaxy as well as in the Gould Belt. We find that γ-ray pulsars located at ∣ b ∣ < 5° and ∣ b ∣ > 5° have very different properties. High Galactic latitude γ-ray pulsars are dominated by mature pulsars with longer periods, weaker fluxes, and softer spectra. If the pulsar birth rates in the Galaxy and the Gould Belt are ~10-2 and ~2 × 10-5 yr-1, respectively, there are 42 and 35 radio-quiet γ-ray pulsars for ∣ b ∣ < 5° and ∣ b ∣ > 5°, respectively. The number of radio-quiet γ-ray pulsars from the Gould Belt are 2 and 13 for ∣ b ∣ < 5° and ∣ b ∣ > 5°, respectively. We suggest that a good fraction of unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources may be these radio-quiet γ-ray pulsars. Furthermore, γ-ray pulsars located at ∣ b ∣ > 5° satisfy Lγ ∝ L, whereas Lγ ∝ L for γ-ray pulsars in the Galactic plane, where β ~ 0.6 and δ ~ 0.3, respectively.
Off-Beam Gamma-Ray Pulsars and Unidentified EGRET Sources in the Gould Belt

Abstract:We investigate whether gamma-ray pulsars viewed at a large angle to the neutron star magnetic pole could contribute to the new population of galactic unidentified EGRET sources associated with the Gould Belt. The faint, soft nature of these sources is distinctly different from both the properties of unidentified EGRET sources along the galactic plane and of the known gamma-ray pulsars. We explore the possibility, within the polar cap model, that some of these sources are emission from pulsars seen at lines of sight that miss both the bright gamma-ray cone beams and the radio beam. The off-beam gamma-rays come from high-altitude curvature emission of primary particles, are radiated over a large solid angle and have a much softer spectrum than that of the main beams. We estimate that the detectability of such off-beam emission is about a factor of 4-5 higher than that of the on-beam emission. At least some of the radio-quiet Gould Belt sources detected by EGRET could therefore be such off-beam gamma-ray pulsars. GLAST should be able to detect pulsations in most of these sources.

Abstract:The Vela pulsar represents a distinct group of {\gamma}-ray pulsars. Fermi {\gamma}-ray observations reveal that it has two sharp peaks (P1 and P2) in the light curve with a phase separation of 0.42 and a third peak (P3) in the bridge. The location and intensity of P3 are energy-dependent. We use the 3D magnetospheric model for the annular gap and core gap to simulate the {\gamma}-ray light curves, phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectra. We found that the acceleration electric field along a field line in the annular gap region decreases with heights. The emission at high energy GeV band is originated from the curvature radiation of accelerated primary particles, while the synchrotron radiation from secondary particles have some contributions to low energy {\gamma}-ray band (0.1 - 0.3 GeV). The {\gamma}-ray light curve peaks P1 and P2 are generated in the annular gap region near the altitude of null charge surface, whereas P3 and the bridge emission is generated in the core gap region. The intensity and location of P3 at different energy bands depend on the emission altitudes. The radio emission from the Vela pulsar should be generated in a high-altitude narrow regions of the annular gap, which leads to a radio phase lag of ~ 0.13 prior to the first {\gamma}-ray peak.

Abstract:We study high-energy radiation properties based on the vacuum outer gap model given by Zhang et al. In this model, the outer gap is sustained by a sufficient number of electron/positron pairs which are created through X-ray and high-energy photon interactions, forming a self-consistent outer gap. For a pulsar with known parameters such as period P, surface magnetic field Bp, and magnetic inclination angle alpha, the geometry of the outer gap (i.e., the transfield height and the radii of inner and outer boundaries of the outer gap) can be determined, and the radiation inside the outer gap along the kth field line which is tangent to the cylinder with a radius of R-L' = k(B)R(L) is treated as a typical high-energy radiation, where R-L = cP/2 pi is the light cylinder radius and k(B) is a parameter. We describe the calculation method of the gamma-ray spectrum for a given gamma-ray pulsar, calculate high-energy spectra for five known gamma-ray pulsars (i.e., Geminga-like pulsars: Geminga and PSR B1055-52, and Vela-like pulsars: Vela, PSR B1951+32 and PSR B1706-44), and compare them with the observed data.
