Abstract:We present a passively mode-locked, tunable soliton Ho:fiber ring oscillator, optimized for seeding of holmium-doped yttrium lithium flouride (Ho:YLF) amplifiers. The oscillator is independently tunable in central wavelength and spectral width from 2040 to 2070 nm and from 5 to 10 nm, respectively. At all settings the pulse energy within the soliton is around 800 pJ. The soliton oscillator was optimized to fully meet the spectral requirements for seeding Ho:YLF amplifiers. Its Kelly sidebands are located outside the amplifier gain spectrum, resulting in a train of about 1 ps long pedestal-free pulses with relative intensity noise of only 0.13% RMS when integrated from 1 Hz to Nyquist frequency.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple and compact Holmium-doped fiber femtosecond oscillator, in-band pumped by a commercial Tm-doped fiber laser. The oscillator operates in the dispersion managed soliton regime at net zero intracavity dispersion and delivers >1 nJ pulse energy at 35 MHz repetition rate. The pulse duration directly at the oscillator output is 160 fs FWHM, close to the Fourier-limit of 145 fs FWHM. Using an additional nonlinear compressor stage, sub-100 fs FWHM pulse durations could be achieved. The nonlinear fiber compressor is implemented by a solid core highly nonlinear fiber for spectral broadening and a single mode fiber for pulse compression.
Long-term stable, synchronizable, low-noise picosecond Ho:fiber NALM oscillator for Ho:YLF amplifier seeding

Abstract:We demonstrate a 41.6 MHz, 1.3 ps, 140 pJ Ho:fiber oscillator using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) as saturable absorber. The oscillator is constructed entirely with polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers, is tunable with a center wavelength between 2035 nm and 2075 nm, and can be synchronized to an external RF reference. For our application of Ho:YLF amplifier seeding for dielectric electron acceleration, the laser is tuned to 2050 nm and synchronized to a stable RF reference with 45 fs rms timing jitter in the integration interval [10 Hz, 1 MHz]. We show long term synchronized operation and characterize the relative intensity noise (RIN) and timing jitter of the oscillator for two different Tm-fiber pump lasers.

Abstract:Multiple soliton mode-locking operations are realized in a Holmium-doped (Ho-doped) fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. The fundamental mode-locking (FML) operation with a repetition rate of 19.91 MHz and a pulse duration of 974 fs is realized at 2056.1 nm. Bunched solitons operation with up to 7 soliton pulses is firstly implemented in the Ho-doped fiber laser by increasing the pump power. The Ho-doped fiber laser can also evolve into the harmonic mode-locking (HML) operation at ∼ 2056 nm by finely adjusting the intra-cavity parameters. The pulse duration is 965 fs at the highest repetition rate of 139.19 MHz, which is believed to be the first report on the femtosecond HML operation in the Ho-doped fiber lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the formation of various pulses from a thulium–holmium (Tm–Ho)-codoped nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mode-locking fiber oscillator. The ultrafast fiber oscillator can simultaneously operate in the noise-like and soliton mode-locking regimes with two different emission wavelengths located around 1947 and 2010 nm, which are believed to be induced from the laser transition of Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions respectively. When the noise-like pulse (NLP) and soliton pulse (SP) co-exist inside the laser oscillator, a maximum output power of 295 mW is achieved with a pulse repetition rate of 19.85-MHz, corresponding to a total single pulse energy of 14.86 nJ. By adjusting the wave plates, the fiber oscillator could also deliver the dual-NLPs or dual-SPs at dual wavelengths, or single NLP and single SP at one wavelength. The highest 61-order harmonic soliton pulse and 33.4-nJ-NLP are also realized respectively with proper design of the fiber cavity.

Abstract:We present a mode-locked holmium-doped all-fiber and all-anomalous dispersion soliton laser operating in the 2089 nm wavelength range based on nonlinear polarization rotation. By optimizing the 1915 nm thulium-doped laser for efficient in-band pumping in a subsequent holmium-doped fiber laser, the optical amplification in 2.1 $\mu$m band is obtained. Nonlinear polarization rotation structure realize the filter and mode-locking, a pulse with a repetition frequency of 20.89 MHz and pulse energy of 4 nJ is realized. By increasing the pump power, the 11-order harmonic soliton mode locking is obtained.

Abstract:Passive harmonic mode-locking of dissipative solitons is demonstrated in all-normal dispersion Yb-doped fibre lasers.A difference equation model of the mode-locked fibre lasers is adopted to simulate the intra-cavity nonlinear dynamics.Hysteresis phenomena around the mode-locking threshold,and the effect of introducing linear phase bias are discussed.The passive harmonic mode-locking as one kind of multipulsing operations is revealed.Moreover,the simulation shows the bistability between multipulsing and single-pulse or period multiplication.

Abstract:Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, we report on a stable passive 23rd harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber soliton laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this laser, 23 solitons are uniformly distributed in the cavity simultaneously, and all solitons have the same energy and duration. The increase of the coupler output enhances the dispersive radiation, and the longer cavity strengthens the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves. The two above factors play the key function to generate the 23rd harmonic mode-locked operation.

Abstract:A 1.94μm Tm-doped fiber laser pumped tunable single-longitudinal-mode Ho:YLF laser with double etalons was reported for the first time. The maximum single-longitudinal-mode output power of 345mW at 2051.6nm was achieved at the absorbed pump power of 11.9W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 5.5% and an optical conversion efficiency of 2.9%. By regulating the angle of the F–P etalons, the output wavelength of the laser can be tuned from 2051.6nm to 2063.3nm. The single-longitude-mode Ho:YLF laser operating at 2μm can be used as the seed laser source of coherent Doppler lidar, differential absorption lidar and so on.

Abstract:We demonstrate active mode locking of a fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO). By inserting an amplitude modulator (AM) into a continuous-wave pumped FOPO loop, intracavity loss is varied periodically. When the modulation frequency of AM coincides with the harmonics of longitudinal modes spacing of the loop cavity, stable 10-GHz pulse train can be obtained. By adjusting the intracavity filter, the wavelength of the pulse train can be tuned over 21 nm.

Abstract:We present a hybrid mode-locked Er-fiber oscillator whose repetition rate can be tuned from 101.3 to 103.0 MHz. By incorporating saturable absorption and nonlinear polarization evolution in a ring cavity, mode-locked states can be easily accessed with a 3 dB spectral range wider than 50 nm. In addition, by the combination of a computer-controlled optical delay line and a piezo actuator to change the length of the cavity, the repetition rate can be stabilized at any frequency in the tunable range for the long term. When phase locking to an Rb clock for 14 h continuously, the standard deviation of the fundamental repetition rate is 0.2 mHz with a gate time of 1 s. In addition, the feedback bandwidth can be extended to ∼400 Hz by stabilizing the 10th harmonic instead of the fundamental repetition rate. Furthermore, the linewidth of the comb modes is investigated by beating with a wavelength-tunable diode laser.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study on the characterization of holmium-doped silica fiber. A standard acousto-optic modulator controls the output power of the ytterbium-doped fiber laser operating at 1134.5 nm and serving as a pump source of the holmium-doped fiber under test. This technique allows us to measure the lifetimes of 5I7 and 5I8 energy levels of Ho3+ ions. The effects of the fiber length and the concentration-dependent pair-induced quenching on the accuracy of the fluorescence lifetime measurement are considered. The results of this study are compared with those obtained using the exponential and Förster decay functions used for such types of measurements. It is demonstrated that the knowledge of two fiber parameters, the pump saturation power and the fluorescence saturation power, together with the fiber absorption spectrum, permits one to obtain the absorption cross-sections at the pump and other key wavelengths, the effective concentration of the active ions, and the quantum efficiency of the fluorescence from the laser level. The results of this study are applicable to the reliable characterization of any type of heavily doped gain fibers and to the further numerical modeling and optimization of fiber lasers.

Abstract:Diverse passive harmonic mode-locking were observed in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped passively mode-locked fiber laser with a long cavity based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Using a cascaded long-period fiber grating as a spectral filter, several modes of passively harmonic mode-locking including passive high-order harmonic mode-locking, passive multiple-pulse harmonic mode locking and passive large-pulse-width harmonic mode locking (over 300 ns ) were obtained by adjusting the tunable CW semiconductor laser (pumping source in the experiment) and polarization controller, in which the intense nonlinear effects, large fiber dispersion and phase bias played an important role. It is expected that the observed various modes of passive harmonic mode-locking may find applications in industrial fields where different pulse widths and repetition rates are needed and provide experimental evidence to the research of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:In this letter, we first demonstrate a core-pumped passively mode-locked all-normal-dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution operating around 980 nm. The dissipative soliton fiber laser pulse can be compressed down to 250 fs with 1 nJ pulse energy, and the slope efficiency of the oscillator can be as high as 19%. To improve the dissipative soliton laser output spectrum smoothness, we replace the birefringent plate based intracavity filter with a diffraction-grating based filter. The output pulse duration can then be further compressed down to 180 fs with improved spectral-smoothness. These schemes have potential applications in seeding cryogenic Yb:YLF amplifiers and underwater exploration of marine resources.

Abstract:A unidirectional, passively Q-switched, 2.05-μm Ho:YLF ring laser providing single-frequency, sub-mJ-energy, 100-200-ns-long laser pulses at a kHz rate is reported. The wavelength selection and "coarse" spectral narrowing is performed by utilizing a volume Bragg grating as a resonant, narrowband output coupler operated at a small angle away from normal incidence. Pulsed operation of the Ho:YLF oscillator and further spectral narrowing down to a single longitudinal mode is achieved via passive Q-switching using a Cr2+-doped saturable absorber.

Abstract:Abstract Passively harmonic mode-locking has been experimentally demonstrated in an erbium-doped fiber laser with large normal dispersion using single-multi-single mode structure as artificial saturable absorber. By increasing the pump power under the same polarization setting, the mode-locking operation can switch from fundamental mode-locked to 5th order harmonic mode-locked. Highest repetition rate of 4.26 MHz (5th order harmonic) is observed, with pulse width and pulse energy ascertained at 290 fs and 3.0 nJ, respectively. Excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of above 50 dB is observed for all harmonic orders. The findings validated that SMS structure can be used to generate stable and switchable high order of harmonic mode-locked. The low-cost SMS fiber for harmonic mode-locked generation technique could lay the groundwork for future sustainable industrial growth.

Abstract:We report on a 980nm all-fiber passively mode-locking Yb-doped phosphate fiber oscillator with the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique and its amplifier. In order to obtaining the stable self-starting mode-locking oscillator at 980nm, a bandpass filter with 30nm transmission bandwidth around 980nm is inserted into the cavity. The oscillator generates the average output power of 26.1mW with the repetition rate of 20.38MHz, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 1.28nJ. The pulse width is 159.48ps. The output spectrum of the pulses is centered at 977nm with a full width half maximum (FWHM) of 10nm and has the characteristic steep spectral edges of dissipative soliton. No undesired ASE and harmful oscillation around 1030nm is observed. Moreover, through two stage all-fiber-integrated amplifier by using the 980nm oscillator as seed source, an amplified output power of 205mW at 980nm and pulse duration of 178.10ps is achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 2.08 μm all-polarization-maintaining (PM) holmium-doped fiber oscillator using a hybrid mode-locking technique with nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). This oscillator features a linear structure with dual output ports. It initiates stable single-pulse mode-locking at a fundamental repetition rate of 57.86 MHz, requiring only about 400 mW of pump power. However, removing SESAM requires increasing the pump power to about 2.2 W—about a 5.8-fold increase—to initiate mode-locking, which starts in a multi-pulse state. Additionally, the oscillator can operate in two distinct states by adjusting the phase bias, ensuring that the main output port delivers high-quality, soliton-like femtosecond pulses. The other port, known as the rejection port, emits lower-quality pulses with different spectral and temporal characteristics. However, in one state, the pulse quality at the rejection port is significantly enhanced, approaching the high quality of the main output port. Theoretical analysis indicates that the pulse quality at the rejection port strongly relies on the energy distribution between the two orthogonally polarized pulses in the PM fiber. Another advantage of the hybrid mode-locking configuration is that it allows a pump power tuning range to maintain single-pulse operation as high as 220 mW. It is ∼4 times higher than that of the NPE-only configuration which is about 60 mW. These results indicate that oscillators using hybrid mode-locking exhibit much greater flexibility and reliability than those using PM-NPE alone. The hybrid mode-locking technique shows potential in addressing the self-starting challenges inherent in PM-NPE lasers, thereby advancing their applicability in practical scenarios.

Abstract:A single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) 2.09 mu m Ho:YAG laser with anti-misalignment corner cube ring cavity was demonstrated. Unidirectional components composed of a faraday rotator and half-wave plate were used to organize the travelling wave beam propagation and to eliminate the spatial hole-burning effect. The maximum SLM power was 728 mW. The corresponding slope efficiency achieved 23.42% and the optical conversion efficiency was 7.16%. Widely tunable wavelength outputs from 2090.43 nm to 2098.37 nm have been achieved by employing a Fabry-Perot etalon. With the advantage of long cavity length and small volume, this structure of the Ho:YAG SLM laser with corner cube ring cavity is a potentially useful way to ensure narrow linewidth output and strong anti-misalignment stability.

Abstract:Ultrafast all-fiber Yb-doped fiber oscillators are usually associated with all-normal-dispersion cavities, which operate in a dissipative soliton regime, quintessential for pulsed operation at the wavelength of 1 {\mu}m. This work presents an all-polarization-maintaining Yb-doper fiber laser oscillator that operates in a dispersion-managed dissipative soliton regime, thanks to incorporating a chirped fiber Bragg grating. The oscillator, mode-locked via a nonlinear optical loop mirror, has an unconventional semi-linear cavity of net anomalous dispersion. Unlike in standard ring resonators, the ultrashort pulse undergoes amplification twice per cavity roundtrip. Additionally, we report a duality of pulsed operation states depending on the pumping power. Strikingly, the oscillator can work in a~subregime similar to the standard dissipative soliton, facilitating further energy scaling at anomalous dispersion. We characterize the low-noise setup capable of delivering pulse energy as high as 6.4 nJ using standard single-mode polarization-maintaining optical fibers.
