Abstract:Soluble microbial products (SMPs) are an important group of components in wastewater effluents. In this study, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), chlorinated solvents (CSs), haloketones (HKs), haloacetonitriles (HANs) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM) (chloropicrin), from SMPs during chlorination, chloramination and ozonation was investigated. More carbonaceous DBPs (C-DBPs: THMs, HAAs, CSs and HKs) and nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs: HANs and TCNM) were formed in chlorination than chloramination. More dichloroacetic and N-DBPs, and higher DBP formation potential were generated by SMPs than by natural organic matter. The results also show that disinfection factors, including temperature, pH, disinfectant dose, reaction time and bromide level significantly affected the formation of DBPs from SMPs. Additionally, the bromine incorporation factor indicates that chloramination may be a good alternative to chlorination in reducing the formation of Br-DBPs from SMPs. Bromide level and pH were the key factors affecting the formation of DBPs in both chlorination and chloramination.

Abstract:Soluble microbial products (SMPs) are an important group of components in activated sludge-treated wastewater effluents. Chlorination is the most widely used method for disinfecting wastewater effluents. During chlorination of wastewater effluents, SMPs may act as precursors to form disinfection by-products (DBPs), which may pose adverse impacts on the organisms in the receiving water body. In this study, SMPs were prepared by simulating activated sludge under different stressful conditions, including high ammonia content (HA), high salinity (HS), high levels of heavy metals (HM) and high temperature (HT), as well as a normal state (NS). The molecular weight (MW) distribution of SMPs was characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Chlorination of SMPs was conducted with sodium hypochlorite. Several species of DBPs were detected using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The mutagenicity of SMPs solutions and SMPs solutions treated with chlorination was also evaluated using the umu test. Compared with NS, stressful conditions were induced to produce more low MW components of SMPs. Stressful conditions, had no significant effect on the species of DBPs, but played a crucial role in the levels of DBPs produced in SMPs solutions during chlorination. Among the stressful conditions tested, HT and HS resulted in higher levels of both carbon-containing DBPs (C-DBPs) and nitrogen-containing DBPs (N-DBPs). Levels of C-DBPs and N-DBPs were lower under HM condition. HA stimulated the production of N-DBPs, but had no impact on the levels of C-DBPs. The mutagenicity of SMPs solutions was higher under the stressful conditions than that under NS condition in both before and after chlorination. For each SMPs solution, the mutagenicity of SMPs increased after the chlorination, except for SMPs solution under HM and NS conditions.
Cultivation-dependent and Cultivation-Independent Investigation of O-methylated Pollutant-Producing Bacteria in Three Drinking Water Treatment Plants

Abstract:O-methylated pollutants (OMPs) are emerging contaminants in drinking water and mainly produced through bacterial O-methylation. However, the information of OMP-producing bacteria (OMPPB) in drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) is largely unknown so far. In this study, the OMPPB in water samples from three DWTPs (XL, JX and NX) were investigated by using cultivation-dependent and cultivation-independent technologies. Four OMPs were detected and their odor and toxicity risks were assessed. Formation potentials (FPs) of 2,4,6-trichloanisole, 2,3,6-trichloanisole, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, pentachloroanisole and diclofenac methyl ester were determined in water samples and their values shifted significantly among DWTPs. A most probable number (MPN) method was established to quantify OMPPB numbers and the relationships between total haloanisole FPs (HAFPs) (y) and OMPPB numbers (x) in three DWTPs could be described by the following functions: y = 0.496x0.373 (XL), y = 0.041x0.465 (JX) and y = 0.218x0.237 (NX). Several genera like Bacillus, Ralstonia, Bre-vundimonas, etc. were newly found OMPPB among the cultivable bacteria, and their OMP products were eval-uated in terms of quantity and environment risks (odor, toxicity and bioaccumulation). High-throughput sequencing revealed treatment process was the main driving factor to shape the OMPPB community structures and Mantel test showed HAFP profile was significantly influenced by Mycobacterium and Pelomonas. PICURSt2 analysis discovered four phenolic O-methyltransferases (OMTs) and four carboxylic OMTs which might be responsible for OMP formation. Several strategies were recommended to assess risk and control contamination brought by OMPPB in DWTPs.

Abstract:In this work, both experimental and modeling approaches are used to explore the formation of soluble microbial products (SMP) by activated sludge under anoxic conditions. With substrate consumption, the SMP concentration increases gradually. Utilization associated products (UAP) are the main fraction of SMP when substrate is present; whereas biomass associated products (BAP) are the major content of SMP as substrate is completely consumed. The fraction of the accumulated SMP accounts for 3-4% of initial organic substrate. Three dimensional excitation emission matrix analysis results indicate that the SMP concentration increases in the denitrification process. The accumulation of nitrite up to 22.6 mg/l under anoxic conditions has no significant effect on the SMP formation. With a consideration of SMP formation under anoxic conditions, an ASM3-based denitrification model is developed. The results show that the developed model is able to capture the relationship between the SMP formation and the substrate consumption by activated sludge in the denitrification process.

Abstract:Previous studies have linked nitrosamine formation during ozonation to a nitrosation process in which nitrosation is catalyzed by formaldehyde, a normal byproduct of ozonation. This mechanism cannot explain the increase in N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation with an increase of pH. This study reinvestigates the pathway of N-nitrosamine formation during ozonation. Our observations demonstrated the critical importance of some reactive inorganic nitrogenous intermediates, such as hydroxylamine and dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4). We report two alternative pathways that possibly explain nitrosamine formation during ozonation at neutral and alkaline pH: (i) secondary amine precursors reacting with hydroxylamine to form unsymmetrical dialkylhydrazine intermediates, which are further oxidized to their relevant nitrosamines; and (ii) a nitrosation pathway in which N2O4 acts as the nitrosating reagent The key variables of pathway (i) (including reaction time, pH, dissolved oxygen)were investigated. Since hydroxylamine is a common intermediate of dimethylamine oxidation, it is reasonable to assume that hydroxylamine is a possible inorganic precursor for NOMA formation during oxidation processes using strong oxidants. With an improved understanding of the pathway of nitrosamine formation, it should be apparent that the reactive nitrogenous intermediates play an important role in the N-nitrosamine-formation, so future studies of N-nitrosamine-formation control should be focused on the transformation of nitrogen in water treatment.
Influence of soluble microbial products (SMP) on wastewater disinfection byproducts: trihalomethanes and haloacetic acid species from the chlorination of SMP

Abstract:Introduction: Effluent organic matter from biological wastewater treatment plants is composed of degradation products and soluble microbial products (SMP). Protein, polysaccharide, humic acid, and DNA were major biomolecules of SMP. Little is known about the effects of SMP as microbially derived precursors on disinfection byproduct formation and speciation in biologically treated wastewater. In addition, there has never been any attempt to directly chlorinate the major biomolecules of SMP. Materials and methods: In this study, model compounds (bovine serum albumin, starch, DNA, and humic acid) and SMP collected from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were chlorinated to verify the trihalomethane and haloacetic acid species that were produced from them. Results and discussion: The results showed that chloroform, dichlorobromomethane, dichloroacetic acid, and trichloroacetic acid were generated from the chlorination of SMP in the SBR, and there was a close relationship between the species predicted from the model chemical compounds and those obtained from the SMP.

Abstract:Disinfection by-products (DBPs), major health concerns in the potable reuse of municipal wastewater effluent, are process-related in wastewater treatment systems. Anammox is a promising and increasingly-applied technology for nitrogen removal in wastewater. In this study, the relationship between DBP formation potential and the anammox process has been investigated based on a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Excitation and emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was employed to identify the compositions of the DBP precursors. The results showed that the effluents from the anammox SBR could yield both carbonaceous and nitrogenous DBPs after chlorination. Trichloromethane (TCM) was the dominant product among all DBPs detected. The anammox effluent has a low specific TCM formation potential of 0.778 μmol/mmol C and a trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential of 0.0725 μmol/mmol C, leading to a TCM and TCNM formation potential ratio of 10.7. We found that substrate utilization of anammox did not enhance DBP yields, and the DBP formation potential decreased after 10 hour starvation. High pH conditions stimulated the production of TCM precursors in the anammox reactor. Humic acid-like and protein-like substances were identified in the EEM spectra of anammox effluents.
Bioavailability of soluble microbial products as the autochthonous precursors of disinfection by-products in aerobic and anoxic surface water

Abstract:Soluble microbial products (SMPs), as a major part of the effluent organic matter discharged into surface water, may affect the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) in downstream drinking water treatment plants. In this study, excitation emission matrix fluorescence with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), high performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and 16SrRNA high-throughput sequencing were used to investigate the aerobic and anoxic bioavailability of SMPs in surface water and evaluate their influences on DBP formation upon chlorination in a subsequent drinking water plant. In this study, SMPs were utilized by enriched microbial communities such as Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria, but the accumulation of SUVA was pronounced during the two oxygen conditions. Biodegraded SMPs had higher humic substructures and lower protein-like components. Due to the presence of SMPs, microbial community compositions were influenced during biodegradation. Moreover, DO was the main factor in biodegradation of SMPs, thus affecting a series of processes, such as microbial compositions, properties of SMPs, DBP formation and reactivity. DBP formation potential decreased after anoxic and aerobic incubations. However, SMPs after aerobic degradation had higher DBP reactivity meanwhile the opposite was found for anoxic incubation. Based on the analysis of IR and HPSEC, it was found that some new substrates or intermediates with MW (220 KDa, <1 KDa) during microbial incubation may contribute to the formation of trihalomethane (THMs), chloral hydrate (CH), dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM) in each DBP sampling episode.

Abstract:Chloramination was commonly used as disinfectant for killing pathogens in water. However, in this process, nitrogen-containing disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) would accidently form and subsequently rise toxicity. Here, we investigated acute toxicity variation and by-products formation during chloramination treatment on UV filter 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-sulfonic acid benzophenone (BP-4). Under alkaline conditions, the acute toxicity of this system had significant increase. A total of 17 transformation products were tentatively identified, and for them, plausible transformation pathways were proposed. Noticeably, numerous aniline and nitrosobenzene analogs were detected, and the dramatic increase of acute toxicity in this system might be primarily attributed to the formation of benzoquinone and aniline analogs. Besides, bromophenol, iodophenol and iodobenzoquinone analogs exhibiting high toxicity were generated in the presence of bromine and iodide ions. This study indicates that chloramination treatment may significantly increase potential health risk, further management on disinfection system is reasonable.

Abstract:Soluble microbial products (SMP) cause major soluble chemical oxygen demands (sCOD) in secondary effluent and significantly affect effluent quality. However, SMP can be also treated as new organic carbon resource, which can provide electrons for denitrification under anoxic conditions. This work investigated contribution of SMP as electron donors during denitrification under different conditions (feast, feast–famine, and famine). Only fraction of utilization-associated products could be adopted as electron donors for denitrification in feast condition because of sufficient organic carbon supply. Most biomass-associated products remained in water. In feast-famine condition, the nitrogen (nitrate and nitrite) reduction using influent TOC and SMP as electron donors were 86.4 and 55.2mgN/L respectively. SMP accounted for 33.6% and 39.0% of total nitrogen (TN) removal and total nitrogen (nitrate and nitrite) reduction, respectively. Only SMP can be adopted as sole electron donors in famine condition. Approximately 128.7mgN/L of nitrogen (nitrate and nitrite) reduction was calculated. Nitrate and TN removal were 91.4% and 51.7%, respectively. As electron acceptors under anoxic conditions, nitrate or nitrite can stimulate SMP generation from hydrolysis of extracellular polymeric substances.

Novel insights into formation mechanism of organic chloramines from pre-oxidized algae-laden water: Multiple roles of dissolved organic nitrogen

Abstract:Organic chloramines posed significant risks to drinking water safety. However, the formation mechanism of algae-derived organic chloramines remained unclear. In this study, it was observed that pre-oxidation of algal suspensions increased organic chloramine formation during chlorination. Compared to KMnO4 pre-oxidation, O3 significantly increased the organic chloramine formation potential of algal suspensions. Characterization was performed with size exclusion chromatography-multiple detectors (SEC-MDs) to better understand the organic chloramine formation mechanism. The results revealed that low molecular weight proteins (AMW ≤ 0.64 kDa) were the main precursors of organic chloramines after conventional water treatment processes. We then focused on 14 essential amino acids involved in protein formation. Their concentrations and organic chloramine formation potentials were determined, based on which the theoretical organic chloramine formation potentials of the studied samples were evaluated. However, dramatic gaps between theoretical and experimental organic chloramine formations were observed, which suggested that not all organic nitrogen could react with chlorine to form organic chloramine. The condensed dual descriptor (CDD) was calculated to predict the electrophilic substitution reaction sites on peptides. Furthermore, the activation barrier of each proposed reaction was computed to confirm that the reaction sites for chlorine were located on amino groups. This study clarified the formation mechanism of algal-derived organic chloramines, which could provide a powerful theoretical foundation for controlling organic chloramine formation in drinking water processes.

Abstract:It is very important to identify the dominant precursors for N-nitrosamine formation from bulk organic matter, to enhance the understanding of N-nitrosamine formation pathways in water treatment plants and allow the development of practical treatment technologies. In this study, dissolved organic matter (DOM) from two source waters was fractionated with XAD resins and ultrafiltration membranes. The N-nitrosamine formation potential (FP) (ng of N-nitrosamines formed per mg of dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) from raw water and each fraction were measured and correlated with the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM), molecular weight (MW) and other assays. The results showed that the hydrophilic fraction had N-nitrosamine FP 1.3 to 3.5 times higher than the hydrophobic fraction from both source waters. The DOM fraction with low MW was the dominant fraction in these two source waters and contributed more precursors for N-nitrosamine formation than the larger MW fraction. The EEM spectra indicated there were notable amounts of soluble microbial products (SMPs) and aromatic proteins in the two studied rivers, which probably originated from wastewater discharge. The SMPs tended to be more closely correlated with N-nitrosodimethylamine formation potential than the other DOM components. Higher N-nitrosamine FP were also related to fractions with lower DOC/DON ratios and lower SUVA254 values.
Formation of organic chloramines during chlorination of 18 compounds

Abstract:Organic chloramines have attracted considerable attention because of their potential toxicity and reactivity. However, the lack of suitable and effective analytical methods has limited the study of organic chloramines due to their volatile and unstable properties. In this study, membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) combined with DPD/FAS titration was used to monitor the formation of organic chloramines. N-chlorodimethylamine [(CH3)2NCl] and N-chlorodiethylamine [(C2H5)2NCl] were detected and identified as the dominant volatile DBPs during chlorination of 18 organic compounds with dimethylamine or diethylamine functional groups, with yields ranging from 0.3% to 51.1% at a chlorine to precursor (Cl/P) molar ratio of 8.0. (CH3)2NBr was formed in the presence of bromide, while the formation of (CH3)2NCl was decreased. The reaction of phenol with (CH3)2NCl combined with theoretical calculations confirmed that the reactivity of (CH3)2NCl was similar to that of monochloramine. Moreover, (CH3)2NCl and (C2H5)2NCl were observed at the ppb level during chlorination of actual water samples collected from different areas. The results suggest that (CH3)2NCl and (C2H5)2NCl are important organic chloramines during chlorination, which may lead to the occurrence of further oxidation reactions and promote the formation of other disinfection byproducts simultaneously and should be of concern.

Identification of N-Nitrosamines and Nitrogenous Heterocyclic Byproducts during Chloramination of Aromatic Secondary Amine Precursors

Abstract:With diminishing pristine water, wastewater-affected waters that contain complex anthropogenic compounds are becoming important sources of drinking water and the compounds will inevitably react with disinfectants to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Secondary amines such as diphenylamine (DPA) analogues are considered as potential precursors of N-nitrosamines. In this study, an in situ 14N/15N-labeling and screening workflow was used to systematically investigate the formation of nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) and putative reaction pathways. Twenty-four pairs of N-DBPs were generated and identified from chloramination of DPA through two main pathways, in which chloramines reacted with the amino and phenyl functional groups to form N-nitrosodiphenylamine and monochlorinated 5,10-dihydro-phenazine (Cl-DiH-Phe), respectively. Cl-DiH-Phe could further produce phenazine and the coupling products with another DPA molecule. Selective N-DBP formation was pH and dose-dependent, and the same reactions were observed for additional two aromatic DPA analogues. Effects of alkyl substituents on the formation pathways were investigated using a series of dialkyl and N-alkyl aromatic analogues. Only the amino pathway to form nitrosamines was noticed for dialkyl amines, nevertheless, both the main reactions occurred for N-alkyl aromatic amines. These findings suggested that the reaction with chloramines through a phenyl pathway was likely to be crucial for novel nitrogenous heterocyclic byproducts.
Formation of nitrosamines during chloramination of two algae species in source water—Microcystis aeruginosa and Cyclotella meneghiniana

Abstract:The contribution of two algae species, Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) and Cyclotella meneghiniana (C. meneghiniana), to the formation of nitrosamines (NAs) during chloramination in drinking water treatment was investigated. A variety of factors including contact time, algae cell concentration, chloramine dosages, and algal cell components (cell debris (CD), intracellular organic matter (IOM), and extracellular organic matter (EOM)) were evaluated for influencing the formation of different NAs, such as N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDMA), N-Nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA), N-Nitrosodibutylamine (NDBA), N-Nitrosodi-n-propylamine (NDPA), and N-nitrosopyridine (NPyr). In addition, NAs formation from Chlorophyll-a and Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) after chloramination was studied. These results showed that the increase of reaction time and algae cell concentration enhanced the formation potential of five types of NAs from both algae species, except for the NDMA formation from C. meneghiniana, which increased first and then decreased with increased reaction time. The generation of NDMA was detected as the dominated type of NAs. The formation of total NAs from both algae species followed same pattern of increasing first and then decreasing with the increase of chloramine dosage. The largest NAs formation potential (NAsFP) of M. aeruginosa and C. meneghiniana showed at 1.5 mM and 1.0 mM monochloramine, respectively. Moreover, the impacts of algae cellular components on the formation potential of NAs followed the order of IOM > EOM ≫ CD and IOM ≫ CD > EOM for M. aeruginosa and C. meneghiniana, respectively, indicating that IOM was the main source of NAs precursors for both algae. Furthermore, EEM analysis before and after chloramination confirmed that the soluble microbial products (SMPs) and protein-like substances were the main cellular components that contributed to NAs formation for both algae. The NAs formation potential of Microcystin-LR was much higher than that of Chlorophyll-a chloramination.

Formation of disinfection byproducts from chlorinated soluble microbial products: Effect of carbon sources in wastewater denitrification processes

Abstract:Carbon sources are crucial for biological denitrification in wastewater treatment that significantly affects the production of soluble microbial products (SMPs), thereby affecting the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during subsequent chlorination. However, the effect of carbon sources on DBPs formation has not been studied. In this work, sodium acetate, sodium lactate, and glucose were used as carbon sources, and denitrifying SMPs derived from different carbon sources were used as DBPs precursors to investigate the formation potential (FP) of 16 carbonaceous DBPs and 19 nitrogenous DBPs. Results showed that the carbonaceous DBPs FP of SMPs derived from acetate, lactate, and glucose were 502.1–584.3, 250.3–288.9, and 374.7–439.1 μg/L, respectively, and the nitrogenous DBPs FP were 19.1–45.6, 12.8–21.9, and 7.9–9.0 μg/L, respectively. After chlorination, the genotoxicity of SMPs measured by the SOS/umu test was also evaluated with 364 ng 4-NQO/L for acetate, 212 ng 4-NQO/L for lactate, and 138 ng 4-NQO/L for glucose. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, chemical structures of SMPs were characterized, and their relationship with DBPs FP was investigated to explain the mechanism of DBPs formation. Aromatic C and C-O were found to be the major precursor structures to form carbonaceous DBPs, and their lowest proportions in lactate-derived SMPs caused the lowest carbonaceous DBPs FP. Organic nitrogen, including aromatic N, amide/peptide N, and primary amine N, was the precursor of nitrogenous DBPs. The lowest concentration of dissolved organic nitrogen for glucose-derived SMPs caused the lowest nitrogenous DBPs FP and genotoxicity. Glucose may be a better choice among the three carbon sources in terms of reducing genotoxicity.

Abstract:Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa, blue-green algae) blooms frequently in drinking water reservoirs and subsequently causes the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) after disinfection, which may pose a potential health risk. In this study, the formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was evaluated from algal organic matter (AOM) including extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM) during the disinfection process of chlorination, chloramination, or ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The effects of a variety of factors, including reaction times, disinfectant dosages and pH, on the NDMA formation by three different disinfection methods were investigated. Additionally, this study evaluated the nitrogen sources involved in NDMA formation during chloramination of EOM and IOM using 15N-labeled monochloramine. The results showed that the NDMA formation by three different disinfection methods were ranked in the order of chlorination > UV irradiation ≈ chloramination and the specific yield from EOM was greater than that from IOM regardless of disinfection method. The yields of NDMA firstly increased and then plateaued as time prolonged during the chlorination and chloramination of AOM. Similarly, the NDMA formation from EOM was firstly increased and then remained constant with the increase of the disinfectant dosage, while it was gradually increased for IOM. The solution pH highly influenced the NDMA formation during chlorination and chloramination, while exhibited a little impact under UV irradiation. Moreover, fluorescence excitation-emission (EEM) analysis confirmed that soluble microbial by-product-like (SMPs) in EOM and IOM were the major precursors in algal-derived organic matter that contributed to the NDMA formation. Chloramination of EOM and IOM using isotope 15N-labeled monochloramine indicated that the nitroso group of the formed NDMA originates mainly from EOM and IOM of algal cells.

Abstract:Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) play an importance role in nitrogen conversion in biological wastewater treatment systems. AOB produce soluble microbial products (SMPs) and nitrous oxides (N2O), respectively, as aqueous and gaseous products at a trace level in their metabolism and decay processes. In this work both experimental and modeling approaches were used to explore the formation of SMP and N2O by an AOB-enriched activated sludge in batch tests and a sequencing batch reactor. The results demonstrated that the N2O emission was related closely with the dissolved oxygen concentration and could be stimulated under oxygen-limited conditions. The denitrification by the AOB with nitrite as their terminal electron acceptor was the main source for the N2O production. The SMPs released by the AOB were composed mainly of biomass-associated products (BAPs), which resulted from the hydrolysis of extracellular polymeric substances. Under stable operating conditions, the average gaseous N2O concentration in the sequencing batch reactor was about 0.36ppm, accounting for 0.44% of the total ammonium oxidation. The SMP concentration in the reactor was of about 20mg/L, in which BAP accounted for more than 65% of SMP. These results might provide useful and valuable information about the nitritation process, which plays an important role in biological wastewater treatment systems.
Effect of anions on sonochemical degradation of PPCPs and their DBPs formation potential

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and their disinfection by-product (DBPs) formation during the disinfection process have raised widespread concerns. In this study, the effects of common anions on the sonochemical degradation of two model PPCPs, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and naproxen (NPX), and their DBPs formation potentials were comparatively explored. The degradation processes followed the heterogeneous kinetic models, indicating PPCPs degradation mainly occurred at the bubble/water interface via radical oxidation. Acidic conditions enhanced sonochemical degradation. Cl − and HCO 3 − have minimal effect, with HCO 3 − moderately enhancing SMX degradation, while Br − notably increased degradation of both PPCPs. Ultrasonic pretreatment reduced trichloromethane (TCM) formation but raised nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) level due to the formed intermediates. Cl − has little effect on DBPs formation, while HCO 3 − obviously diminished N-DBPs formation from both PPCPs. The increase of Br − concentration increased the formation of brominated DBPs (Br-DBPs), while the formation of chlorinated DBPs were inhibited both in direct chlorination and ultrasonic pretreatment followed by postchlorination. Ultrasonic pretreatment also elevated Br incorporation and utilization factors of trihalomethanes (THMs). Of note, although ultrasonic treatment can effectively degrade PPCPs in real environmental matrices, the increase in trichloronitromethane (TCNM) formation potential should be carefully monitored.

Identification of potential nitrogenous organic precursors for C-, N-DBPs and characterization of their DBPs formation

Abstract:Nitrosamines are a class of emerging disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are mainly formed when water is treated by chloramination. Nitrosamines are highly carcinogenic and are hence a major concern for drinking water supplies. Although dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) compounds such as dimethylamine (DMA) have been recognized as important precursors of nitrosamines, many of them have not been identified, especially those used in consumer products. In this study, nine representative nitrogenous organic compounds with different DON characteristics and structures were selected to react with free chlorine, chlorine dioxide and monochloramine, respectively, for their DBP formation characteristics (nitrosamines, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)). It was found that in addition to DMA, benzyldimethyltetradecylamine (benzalkonium chloride, BKC) and 3-(N,N-dimethyloctyl-ammonio)propanesulfonate (3-N,N-DAPSIS) inner salt were potent precursors for carbonated DBPs (C-DBPs) and nitrogenated DBPs (N-DBPs). The DBP formation potential (DBPFP) tests showed that 1 mM of BKC formed more than 2 × 10(5) ng/L of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) when treated with monochloramine and high levels of C-DBPs (2713 ± 145 μg/L of THMs and 356 ± 5 μg/L of HAAs) when treated with chlorine. 3-N,N-DAPSIS was a less potent DBP precursor: 1 mM of 3-N,N-DAPSIS generated 1155 ± 7 ng/L of NDMA, 1351 ± 66 μg/L of THMs and 188 ± 1 μg/L of HAAs. DMA, 3-N,N-DAPSIS and BKC were examined for their DBPFPs at various pH and temperatures to determine the impact of pH and reaction temperature on DBP yields and their formation mechanisms. The results showed that DBP yields apparently increased with rising temperature. However, no consistent correlations were observed between DBPs yields and pH. Bromide shifted the DBP species into brominated DBPs, and this phenomenon was more apparent when BKC was treated with chloramine.
