Abstract:A self-chaotic circular-sided square microcavity laser, with a chaos bandwidth of 12.9 GHz and a flatness of ±3d B, was applied in optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR). Using the broadband chaos laser, we demonstrated a range resolution of 4.5 mm and a 25-km detection distance experimentally. The solitary wide-bandwidth microcavity chaos laser, without the extra correlation peaks in optical feedback chaotic lasers, has shown potential advantages for correlation OTDR in practical application.

Abstract:Raman distributed optical fiber temperature sensors possess the unique capability of measuring spatial environmental temperatures, which can be of great interest in several fields of application. The key physics barrier to spatial resolution for most optical time-domain reflection (OTDR) systems is the positioning principle of pulse-time-flight. It obtains the spatial resolution of the existing Raman distributed optical fiber temperature sensor, with the kilometer-level sensing distance being limited to the meter-level. Here, we propose a chaotic laser Raman distributed optical fiber temperature sensing scheme that replaces the traditional OTDR positioning principle used for more than 40 years with the chaotic correlation positioning principle. The proposed scheme possesses the characteristics of the chaos Raman scattering light excited by the chaos signal along the sensing fiber. A novel measurement mechanism based on chaotic time-domain differential reconstruction and chaotic correlation demodulation is developed, and a relationship between the temperature variation information and the chaotic correlation peak is experimentally demonstrated. Importantly, the proposed optics mechanism scheme overcomes the physics limitation of the effect of a wide pulse width on sensing spatial resolution; its spatial resolution is optimized from 50 to 0.3 m under the modulation of a 500 ns pulse width. This scheme provides a new concept for chaos optics and fiber sensing research.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/H z. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

Abstract:Abstract The physics principle of pulse flight positioning is the main theoretical bottleneck that restricts the spatial resolution of the existing Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme. Owing to the pulse width of tens of nanoseconds, the spatial resolution of the existing Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme with kilometer-level sensing distance is limited to the meter level, which seriously restricts the development of the optical time-domain reflection system. In this paper, a chaos laser is proposed in the context of the physical principle of the Raman scattering effect, and a novel theory of chaos Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme is presented. The scheme reveals the characteristics of chaos Raman scattering light excited by a chaotic signal on the sensing fiber. Further, the chaos time-domain compression demodulation mechanism between the temperature variation information and chaos correlation peak is demonstrated. Then, the position of the temperature variation signal is precisely located using the delay time of the chaos correlation peak combined with the chaos pulse flight time. Based on this novel optical sensing mechanism, an experiment with 10 cm spatial resolution and 1.4 km sensing distance was conducted, and the spatial resolution was found to be independent of the sensing distance. Within the limit of the existing spatial resolution theory, the spatial resolution of the proposed scheme is 50 times higher than that of the traditional scheme. The scheme also provides a new research direction for optical chaos and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:A single-chip Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) system-on-chip (SoC) for fiber-optic fault detection and localization is presented. The IC can be configured into several modes including high-performance mode (external modulator and expensive off-chip laser / APD), and low-cost mode (low power/gain and inexpensive laser / APD). Experimental optical measurements demonstrate that the maximum detectable fiber length of the proposed OTDR SoC can be as long as 25km, while the spatial resolution can achieve 2.5m, 4m and 10m, for various configurations. Compared with current discrete solutions on the market, the proposed OTDR system can reduce the cost by 100x, area by 5x, and power consumption by 4x.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-wavelength chaotic light source is proposed and demonstrated based on a fiber ring laser (FRL) with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the intra-cavity gain element. By properly adjusting the bias current and the polarization, the SOA-FRL generates a high-dimension chaotic optical output with 24-nm optical bandwidth. The temporal instability of the output originates from the optical feedback, as well as the nonlinear effects of both the SOA and the long fiber. With optical-to-electrical conversion, the output electrical signal presents a bandwidth of 13 GHz, which is only limited by the bandwidth of the detection system. By inserting a tunable bandpass filter (TBPF) into the cavity, the chaotic emission bandwidth is limited to 3.2 nm. The output is then divided into two parallel channels using a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM). Autocorrelation of the two outputs confirms fair randomness, while the cross-correlation result verifies the independence of the two. With multi-bit sampling and over-sampling, dual-channel true random number generation (TRNG) up to 960 Gbps per channel is achieved. Random sampling periods are adopted to reduce the influence of the time-delay signature (TDS), which originates from the round-trip delay of the laser cavity and affects the randomness of the output. At a significance level of 0.01 and a random sampling ratio of 10-4 , the generated random bits can pass all the tests provided by the NITS SP800-22 test tool.

Abstract:Optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) is a well-developed technique detecting returned light signals which are scattered and reflected from the optical fiber when optical pulses are propagating forward along the fiber, providing useful information regarding the characteristics of the optical fiber, indicating loss, locations of faults or connections, etc. The returned signals need to be acquired at a sampling rate satisfying Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem. In this paper, we propose a computational OTDR based on computational ghost imaging technique in the time domain by sending pre-known pulse sequences and collecting the "integrated" returned light signals, realizing a very different probing and acquiring approach compared to conventional OTDR, reducing sampling rate requirement significantly. Theoretical analysis and mathematical details are given for demonstrating the performance difference of the proposed method using probe sequences derived from a random matrix and an orthogonal matrix. Experiments are carried out to verify the theory indicating that significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved using Walsh–Hadamard matrix which is suggested by the theoretical analysis. Finally, we give detailed comparison of the proposed computational OTDR with the conventional technique, showing that sampling rate can be reduced greatly using the computational technique, but it comes with a penalty of requiring more measurements for achieving the same SNR as the conventional technique.

Abstract:We propose a newly configured optical correlation-domain reflectometry (OCDR) without the use of an electrical spectrum analyzer (ESA) for high-speed distributed reflectivity measurement with an enhanced spatial resolution. First, the operation of ESA-free OCDR is analyzed by numerical simulation, the results of which show the potential of the configuration to perform distributed reflectivity measurement with an improved spatial resolution. Subsequently, the simulation results are verified by comparison experiments, where distributed reflectivity measurements along a 32-m-long single-mode fiber joint with multiple connectors are performed using both conventional (with averaging) and ESA-free OCDR configurations (without averaging) at a repetition rate of 100 Hz. The widths of the reflectivity peaks experimentally obtained by the conventional and ESA-free OCDR configurations are 22.9 cm and 7.0 cm, respectively. Finally, we experimentally evaluated the performance of the ESA-free OCDR at higher repetition rates, achieving 6.3-cm spatial resolution at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. This result indicates that the ESA-free OCDR can perform a distributed reflectivity measurement with an improved spatial resolution at a higher operation speed than ever.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensing technology has been widely applied in the areas of infrastructure health monitoring, national defense security, etc. The long-range high-spatial-resolution Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) has extensive development and application prospects. In this paper, long-range BOCDAs are introduced and summarized. Several creative methods underpinning measurement range enlargement, including the interval enhancement of the adjacent correlation peak (CP), improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio, and the concurrent interrogation of multiple CPs, are discussed and experimentally verified, respectively. The main drawbacks in the present BOCDA schemes and avenues for future research and development have also been prospected.

Abstract:A new approach to enhance the performance of coherent optical time domain reflectometry(C-OTDR) is proposed. In this approach, single frequency light is converted to multi-frequency light using phase modulator (PM), while only two frequencies with the same light power level are adopted as the probe .Coherent heterodyne between the dual frequency probe and original single frequency local oscillator (LO) generates the same intermediate frequency (IF), which equals two IF signals automatically synthesizing in the process of coherent detection other than in IF signal processing circuit, so it doubles measurement speed. Experimental results show that compared with conventional single frequency probe based C-OTDR the dual frequency probe based C-OTDR has more quickly coherent Rayleigh noise (CRN) reduction capability and can bring a 3.0dB dynamic range improvement.

Abstract:Coherent optical time-domain reflectometer (COTDR) has shown high sensing resolution, but it is sensitive to noise, polarization and frequency shift. Wavelet smoothing DSP (Digital Signal Processing), combined with direct-detecting method and precise optical frequency shift controlled by microwave electro-optical modulation, is proposed for improving the performance of COTDR. A resolution of 0.1 degrees C can be obtained in a 4.5-km-long fiber and a 25-km-long fiber. Besides that, the signals' correlation keeps longer than 10 minutes in the 4.5-km-long fiber.

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel four-channel coherent optical chaotic secure communication (COCSC) system, incorporating four simultaneous photonic reservoir computers in tandem with four coherent demodulation units. We employ a quartet of photonic reservoirs that capture the chaotic dynamics of four polarization components (PCs) emitted by a driving QD spin-VCSEL. These reservoirs are realized utilizing four PCs of a corresponding reservoir QD spin-VCSEL. Through these four concurrent photonic reservoir structures, we facilitate high-quality wideband-chaos synchronization across four pairs of PCs. Leveraging wideband chaos synchronization, our COCSC system boasts a substantial 4 × 100 GHz capacity. High-quality synchronization is pivotal for the precise demasking or decoding of four distinct signal types, QPSK, 4QAM, 8QAM and 16QAM, which are concealed within disparate chaotic PCs. After initial demodulation via correlation techniques and subsequent refinement through a variety of digital signal processing methods, we successfully reconstruct four unique baseband signals that conform to the QPSK, 4QAM, 8QAM and 16QAM specifications. Careful examination of the eye diagrams, bit error rates, and temporal trajectories of the coherently demodulated baseband signals indicates that each set of baseband signals is flawlessly retrieved. This is underscored by the pronounced eye openings in the eye diagrams and a negligible bit error rate for each channel of baseband signals. Our results suggest that delay-based optical reservoir computing employing a QD spin-VCSEL is a potent approach for achieving multi-channel coherent optical secure communication with optimal performance and enhanced security.

Abstract:Laser with high spectral purity plays a crucial role in high-precision optical metrology and coherent communication. Thanks to the rapid development of laser frequency stabilization, the laser phase noise can be remarkably compensated, allowing its ultra-narrow linewidth subject to mostly quantum limit. Nevertheless, the accurate characterization of phase noise dynamics and its intrinsic linewidth of a highly coherent laser remains ambiguous and challenging. Here, we present an approach capable of revealing delay-time-resolved phase noise dynamics of a coherent laser based on coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR), in which distributed Rayleigh scattering along a delay fibre essentially allows a time-of-flight mapping of a heterodyne beating signal associated with delay-time-dependent phase information from a single laser source. Ultimately, this novel technique facilitates a precise measurement of ultra-narrow laser linewidth by exploiting its delay-time-resolved phase jitter statistics, confirmed with the analytical modelling and numerical simulations.

Abstract:A high-performance quantitative detection distributed optical fiber sensing technology based on Rayleigh scattering is proposed and studied.Based on the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR),a direct detection coherent optical time-domain reflectometer (COTDR) sensing system is set up,by combining the narrow-linewidth laser with microwave electro-optical modulation to obtain optical frequency-shift precisely.The sensing quantity (temperature or strain) can be obtained from the change of the Rayleigh scattering light interference pattern generated by the frequency shift of the light source.The sensing principle of the direct-detecting COTDR system is studied,with simulating and analyzing the COTDR sensing process and the correlation characteristics of the scattering signals.On the basis of theoretical analysis,the direct-detecting COTDR experimental system is built,and 25 km distributed optical fiber temperature sensing experiment is realized.The experiment results show that the COTDR experimental system can measure the temperature change of 0.1 ℃ at the end of the 25 km sensing fiber.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the development progress of correlation-based optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR). Substituting the direct detection receiver with a coherent receiver enables to extract the phase and polarization information of the reflected signal. Furthermore, due to the mixing of a weak probe signal with a strong local oscillator the sensitivity of the receiver improved. This improvement was demonstrated by analyzing the reflection from an angled physical contact (APC) connector. To further quantify the improvements, we compare the direct detection correlation OTDR (C-OTDR) with the coherent detection correlation OTDR (CC-OTDR) with respect to the spatial and amplitude resolution.
