Abstract:A new composite with Fe-based ferromagnetic microwires embedded in a typical Eglass/913 epoxy matrix has been designed and produced with the aim to introduce magnetic sensing functionality into this fibre composite. Annealing treatment was employed to tailoring the nanocrystalline structure of the magnetic microwires. The effects of annealing and measuring temperature on the magnetic properties of the composite were investigated. Compared with a single monolithic microwire, a smaller coercivity and a larger saturation magnetization are observed for the composite sample. This is beneficial for magnetic sensing applications. It is found that, for composite samples annealed at temperatures between 375 K and 500 K, the coercivity first increases as the annealing temperature increases towards a temperature close to the glass transition temperature of Tg ~ 449.5 K of the epoxy matrix, and then decreases at higher temperatures. Similar trend was observed for the measuring temperature dependence of coercivity and saturation magnetization. The role of internal stresses and microwires arrangement are important in determining the magnetic nature of the composite.
