Abstract:This paper reports a novel self-templating methodology for the formation of SnO(2)-carbon hybrid hollow spheres by using Sn spheres as sacrificing templates. The time-sequenced structural evolution of the templates indicates that the nanoscale Kirkendall effect plays a critical role in the transformation from Sn spheres to the hybrid hollow spheres. Moreover, the as-synthesized SnO(2)-carbon hybrid hollow spheres have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit a much higher initial Coulombic efficiency and better cycling performance than pure SnO(2) hollow spheres.

Abstract:Monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres are employed as both the template and carbon source to prepare MoS2 quasi-hollow microspheres-encapsulated porous carbon. The synthesis procedure involves the hydrothermal growth of MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets on the surface of SPS microspheres and subsequent annealing to remove SPS core. Incomplete decomposition of SPS during annealing due to the confining effect of MoS2 shells leaves residual porous carbon in the interior. When being evaluated as the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, the as-prepared C@MoS2 microspheres exhibit excellent cycling stability (95% of capacity retained after 100 cycles) and high rate behavior (560 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)).

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:SiOx/C composites with a void‐reserving structure are promising anodes for lithium‐ion batteries. However, the facile and controllable synthesis of uniformly dispersed SiOx and carbon components, simultaneously incorporating ample voids, still remains a great challenge. Herein, a molecular polymerization strategy is devised to construct SiOx/C hollow particles for lithium‐ion batteries. 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane and dialdehyde molecules are judiciously engineered as silicon and carbon precursors to produce the polymer hollow spheres (PHSs) through a one‐step aldimine condensation without any template and additive. A range of PHSs is obtained using terephthalaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and glyoxal as the crosslinkers, demonstrating the high tunability of the strategy. Importantly, in situ pyrolysis of the PHSs warrants the homogeneous incorporation of SiOx (<5 nm) in carbon hollow capsids at a nanocluster scale. The obtained SiOx/C hollow spheres exhibit excellent Li+‐ion storage behaviors, including cycling lifespan, coulombic efficiency, and rate performance. The superior performance is attributed to the well‐dispersed SiOx nanoclusters in carbon substrate and the hollow structure. This molecular polymerization approach not only enables Si‐based hollow composites effective and scalable anode materials but also opens up a new avenue for the controllable synthesis of template‐free hollow architectures.

Abstract:Double-layered hollow carbon spheres (DLHC) were widely used as sulfur matrix for Li-S batteries. However, DLHC with 20–30 nm interlayer distances between carbon shells were reported due to the difficult controllable synthesis of monodisperse silica template (<200 nm) in the Stöber method, leading to low sulfur utilization. Here, DLHC with the interlayer space up to 50 nm (DLHC-50) is synthesized by controlling hydrolysis rate of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) using ammonia/LiOH as catalysts. DLHC-50 based sulfur cathode contains high sulfur content of 82%, and exhibits excellent cycling and rate performances. This research provides guidance for synthesis of DLHC with high sulfur utilization.

Abstract:In this work, a facile "soft-template" route to synthesize nitrogen-doped double-shelled hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (N-DHMCSs) has been developed by using anionic block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) micelles as soft template, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silica source, and dopamine (DA) as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. After carbonization of the PDA precursors and the removal of silica, the obtained N-DFIMCSs present high specific surface area (>600 m(2)/g), adjustable nitrogen doping content (4.02%-5.91% in weight ratios), and unique double-shell hollow structures. Especially, the sample of N-DHMCSs-800 carbonized at 800 degrees C exhibits a high discharge specific capacity of 920.3 mA h/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g after 100 cycles. In addition, at a relative high current density of 0.5 A/g, its discharge specific capacity is up to 614.1 mA h/g even after 300 cycles. More importantly, it demonstrates excellent rate capabilities by the fact that a high reversible capacity of 910.9 mA h/g was maintained after cycling at different current densities. Therefore, it is anticipated that such a facile "soft template" strategy can provide us a promising platform for preparing multishelled and hollow structured nanomaterials with various components and functions.

Abstract:In this paper, hollow carbon microspheres (HCMs) with tunable shell numbers were controllably synthesized by the combination of facile hydrothermal method and etching treatment. The microstructure, morphology and electrochemical performance of HCMs were investigated by X-ray photoelectron, spectra SEM and TEM measurements, and galvanostatic charge–discharge tests. The size of HCMs was uniform and increased with increasing the number of inner carbon shells. Compared to the single-layer carbon microspheres and double-layer carbon microspheres, threelayer HCMs (TLCs) with diameters of 310–360 nm exhibited the highest reversible capacity presenting original discharge and charge capacity of 626.04 and 575.68 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 C. Moreover, the capacitance retention reached to 360 mAh ·g−1 and charge–discharge efficiency was still over 97% after 100 cycles. The superior properties of TLCs can be mainly attributed to their unique three-layer hollow structure which can significantly enhance the pore volume and specific surface area, and thus provides more Li-ions reaction sites and larger contact area between electrodes. Furthermore, the design strategy of HCMs is expected to provide a novel guidance for the design of multi-layer carbon structure with improved electrochemical properties.

Abstract:An in situ carbon-encapsulating solution route for the synthesis of Li4Ti5O12@C composite hollow microspheres has been developed. The finally obtained Li4Ti5O12@C hollow microspheres possess a microsized spherical shape, embedded Li4Ti5O12 nanocrystals, and fully encapsulating conductive carbon shells, which endow this Li4Ti5O12 anode material with high specific capacity, rate capability, and cycle stability. Owing to their unique microstructure characteristics, these hollow Li4Ti5O12@C microsphere composites are promising anode materials for highly efficient Li-ion batteries with an excellent rate capability (discharge capacity of 169, 152, 130, 116, 93, and 76 mAhg(-1) at 0.2, 1, 2, 5, 30 and 60C, respectively) and a significantly enhanced cycling performance.

Abstract:We report a facile route to synthesize Co3O4–C hybrid core-shell and hollow spheres with porous structures. Based on the results of the numerous characterization methods used, the ligand exchange etching mechanism is proposed to explain the formation of these two structures. Evaluated as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), both core-shell and hollow submicrospheres manifest excellent cycling performance. This feature may be attributed to the uniform distribution of amorphous carbon and structural characteristics of these submicrospheres. Moreover, the superior reversible capacity of the core-shell spheres is 825 mA h g−1 over 40 cycles (the theoretical capacity value: ∼890 mA h g−1), resulting from a higher void-space-utilizing rate and the right accommodation of the volume change during the charge process. Despite various reported methods, this novel strategy may provide new thoughts to prepare other hollow structured materials.

Abstract:We report engineered hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres that consist of a mesoporous shell, a hollow void, and an anchored carbon core and are expected to be ideal sulfur hosts for overcoming the shortage of Li-S batteries. The hollow core-shell interlinked carbon spheres were obtained through solution synthesis of polymer spheres followed by a pyrolysis process that occurred in the hermetical silica shell. During the pyrolysis, the polymer sphere was transformed into the carbon core and the carbonaceous volatiles were self-deposited on the silica shell due to the blocking effect of the hermetical silica shell. The gravitational force and the natural driving force of lowering the surface energy tend to interlink the carbon core and carbon/silica shell, resulting in a core-shell interlinked structure. After the SiO2 shell was etched, the mesoporous carbon shell was generated. When used as the sulfur host for Li-S batteries, such a hierarchical structure provides access to Li(+) ingress/egress for reactivity with the sulfur and, meanwhile, can overcome the limitations of low sulfur loading and a severe shuttle effect in solid carbon-supported sulfur cathodes. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy images provide visible evidence that sulfur is well-encapsulated in the hollow void. Importantly, such anchored-core carbon nanostructures can simultaneously serve as a physical buffer and an electronically connecting matrix, which helps to realize the full potential of the active materials. Based on the many merits, carbon-sulfur cathodes show a high utilization of sulfur with a sulfur loading of 70 wt % and exhibit excellent cycling stability (i.e., 960 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C).

Abstract:We report the preparation and characterization of mesoporous hollow CuO (MPH-CuO) microspheres by thermal decomposition of hollow copper oxalate microspheres synthesized via the reaction of ammonium oxalate and copper chloride without using any template. The sample was characterized by Nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance of MPH-CuO microspheres as anode materials in Li-ion batteries was evaluated. It was found that the MPH-CuO microspheres possessed an average diameter of 2.5 microm, a pore size of 17.5 nm, and a BET surface area of 15.2 m2/g. Their shells were composed of CuO nanocrystals with a size of 17.9 nm. Compared with the dense CuO microspheres, the obtained MPH-CuO shows an enhanced electrochemical performance with a higher capacity of 599.4 mAh/g and a better cyclability (484 mAh/g after 15 cycles) because of its mesoporous hollow structure that provides quick intercalation and large accommodation of lithium ions together with short diffusion distance for lithium ions, suggesting a potential application in Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon possesses a high theoretical specific capacity and is a promising high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it shows a poor cycling performance because of volume expansion. A hollow structure can improve Si cycling performance, and the template method is one of the most common methods for hollow micro/nanosphere preparation. A polystyrene (PS) microsphere has the advantages of having a uniform and controllable particle size, easy modification, and high stability, thus being an ideal template for preparing hollow structure material. Herein, PS microspheres are used as templates to obtain hollow silica spheres, and then obtain hollow silicon spheres with an inner pore diameter of ~50 nm by a magnesium thermal reduction method. Lithium-ion battery anode material is obtained using carbon nanotubes supporting hollow silicon spheres (Si-CNTs). Si-CNTs exhibit excellent cycling performance (1188 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles) and excellent rate capability (484 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1). Hollow porous Si-CNTs show great potential, providing a promising idea for solving the volume expansion problem of Si.

Abstract:Hollow micro-/nanostructures have achieved great success in the field of renewable battery materials by reducing the volume change and promoting the ion transport. Double-shelled Co3V2O8 hollow nanospheres (CVO-DSS) were synthesized using a facile solvothermal method followed by a thermal treatment in the absence of any surfactant. Meanwhile, two other architectures of hollow nanospheres and nanoparticles were obtained by changing the annealing temperature. Benefiting from the desired hollow structure, the CVO-DSS electrode exhibits excellent lithium storage properties as an anode. It exhibits a reversible discharge capacity of 1210 mAh·g−1 at 200 mA·g−1 after 100 cycles and a satisfactorily high rate capacity of 628 mAh·g−1 after 800 cycles at 5000 mA·g−1. These hollow nanostructures can efficiently enhance the contact area of the electrolyte/electrode interface, promote the diffusion of lithium ions and electrons and slow down the capacity loss during long cycles.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Hollow 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) microspheres are synthesized on a large scale through a simple in situ template-sacrificial route. Starting from porous MnO2 microspheres, the hollow microspheres assembled with 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) nanocrystals are formed by a nanoscale Kirkendall effect. The nanocrystal-assembled hollow 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(0.5)Mn(0.5)O(2) microspheres exhibit a highly reversible capacity as high as 295 mAh g(-1) over 100 cycles and excellent rate capability (125 mAh g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1)). Benefitting from a unique hollow and nanocrystalline architecture, the as-formed hollow microspheres show much enhanced high-temperature (55 degrees C) electrochemical performances, compared with the products obtained by conventional sol-gel/solid-state reaction methods. This work demonstrates that a fabrication strategy based on the present in situ template-sacrificial approach offers a new method for the design of high-performance cathode materials with hollow interiors for Li-ion battery applications.

Abstract:Hollow structure is a kind of special structure that can effectively relieve the volume expansion of anode material, but the large space in hollow structure also sacrifices the specific capacity of the material to some extent. In this paper, lemon-like hollow SiO2 spheres were prepared by soft template method as anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The advantages of the anode material are: (1) There is a certain space inside the hollow sphere to relieve the volume expansion, which can improve the cyclic stability of the material; (2) There are many SiO2/SiO x nanoparticles wrapped inside the hollow sphere, which can improve the specific capacity of the material in the cycle; (3) There is a certain gap between the SiO2/SiO x nanoparticles inside the hollow sphere. This provides a channel for the migration of Li+ in the cycle, which is conducive to the migration of Li+ and improves the rate performance of lithium-ion battery. (4) The lemon-like hollow SiO2 spheres can be prepared by one-step method, and the preparation process is simple. The discharge mass specific capacity of composite materials is 786 mA h g−1 at current density of 1.0 A g−1 after 500 cycles. The discharge specific capacity at current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 A g−1 are 900, 854, 787, 681, 492 mA h g−1, respectively. The composite materials show certain potential as anode materials for high performance lithium-ion batteries.
