Abstract:The ground state properties of the four isotope chains, Ni-28, Xe-54, (78)pt, Pu-94 are studied in the relativistic mean-field theory by using two sets of parameters, NL-3 and NL-Z. We find that the binding energies of odd-A nuclei are even closer to the corresponding experimental results, compared with those of the even-even nuclei. Our results indicate that it is reliable to neglect the space component of the vector meson fields in calculating binding energies of odd-A nuclei in the relativistic mean-field theory.

Abstract:Recent years have seen considerable progress with ab-initio calculations of the nuclear structure by non-relativistic many-body methods. Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock Theory provides a relativistic ab-intio approach, which is able to reproduce saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter without three-body forces. However, so far, the corresponding equations have been solved only for positive energy states. Negative energy states have been included for forty years in various approximations, leading to differences in the isospin dependence. This problem has been solved only recently by a complete solution of the self-consistent relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations in asymmetric nuclear matter. Due to its numerical complexity, however, it is very difficult to extend the Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory to the study of finite nuclear systems. Recent efforts will be discussed to overcome this problem.
A Reliability Analysis of Calculated Results for Odd-Even and Odd-Odd Nuclei in Relativistic Mean-Field Theory

Abstract:We calculate the binding energies of Ni, Cu, Xe, Cs, Pt, Au, Np, Pu isotope chains using two interaction parameter sets NL-3 and NL-Z, and compared the relative errors of the even-even nuclei with those of odd-even nuclei and odd-odd nuclei. We find that the errors of binding energy of odd-even and odd-odd nuclei are not bigger than the one of even-even nuclei. The result shows that comparing with even-even nuclei, there is no systematic error and approximation in the calculations of the binding energy of odd-even and odd-odd nuclei with relativistic mean-field theory. In addition, the result is explained theoretically.

Abstract:Starting from chiral N3LO,we have applied many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to the structure of spherical,doubly closed-shell nuclei.The two-body N3LO interaction is softened by a similarity renormalization group transformation.The MBPT calculations are performed within the Hartree-Fock (HF) bases.Higher-order corrections in the HF basis are small relative to the leading-order perturbative result.Corrections up to the third order in energy and up to the second order in wave function are evaluated.Using the anti-symmetrized Goldstone diagram expansions of the wave function,we directly correct the one-body density for the calculation of the radius.Our results are in very good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:Starting with a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction, for the first time the full relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations are solved for finite nuclei in a Dirac-Woods-Saxon basis. No free parameters are introduced to calculate the ground-state properties of finite nuclei. The nucleus ^16O is investigated as an example. The resulting ground-state properties, such as binding energy and charge radius, are considerably improved as compared with the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results and much closer to the experimental data. This opens the door for ab initio covariant investigations of heavy nuclei.

Abstract:It is known that elastic magnetic electron scattering can be used to study the magnetic properties of nuc-lei and determine the outermost-shell single-particle orbitals.In this study,the magnetic form factors |FM(q)|2 of odd-A nuclei calculated with relativistic and non-relativistic models are systematically compared.We use the relativ-istic mean-field (RMF) and Skyrme Hartree-Fock (SHF) models to generate single-particle wave functions and cal-culate the |FM(q)|2 values of selected nuclei under relativistic and non-relativistic frameworks,respectively.Geo-metric factors are introduced through the spherical limit method to consider the influences of deformation,which im-proves the agreement between the theoretical results and experimental data.It is shown that both the models have the capability to describe the magnetic form factors in the spherical and deformed cases,and the discrepancies in|FM(q)|2 reflect the differences in the descriptions of the single-particle orbital between the two models.

Abstract:Starting from realistic nuclear forces, the chiral N$^3$LO and JISP16, we have applied many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to the structure of closed-shell nuclei, $^4$He and $^{16}$O. The MBPT calculations are performed within the Hartree-Fock (HF) bases. The angular momentum coupled scheme is used, which can reduce the computational task. Corrections up to the third order in energy and up to the second order in radius are evaluated. Higher-order corrections in the HF basis are small relative to the leading-order perturbative result. Using the anti-symmetrized Goldstone diagram expansions of the wave function, we directly correct the one-body density for the calculation of the radius, rather than calculate corrections to the occupation propabilities of single-particle orbits as found in other treatments. We compare our results with other methods where available and find good agreement. This supports the conclusion that our methods produce reasonably converged results with these interactions. We also compare our results with experimental data.

Abstract:Relativistic Hartree equations for spherical nuclei have been derived from a relativistic quark model of the structure of bound nucleons which interact through the (self-consistent) exchange of scalar (σ) and vector (ω and ϱ) mesons. The coupling constants and the mass of the σ-meson are determined from the properties of symmetric nuclear matter and the rms charge radius in 40Ca. Calculated properties of static, closed-shell nuclei from 16O to 208Pb are compared with experimental data and with results of Quantum Hadrodynamics (QHD). The dependence of the results on the nucleon size and the quark mass is investigated. Several possible extensions of the model are also discussed.

Spherical Relativistic Hartree Theory in a Woods-Saxon Basis

Abstract:The Woods-Saxon (WS) basis is suggested to replace the widely used harmonic oscillator basis for solving the relativistic mean-field theory in order to generalize it to study exotic nuclei. As an example, the relativistic Hartree theory is solved for spherical nuclei in a Woods-Saxon basis obtained by solving either the Schrodinger equation or the Dirac equation (labeled as SRHSWS and SRHDWS, respectively, and SRHWS for both). In SRHDWS, the negative energy states in the Dirac sea must be properly included. The WS basis in SRHDWS could be smaller than that in SRHSWS, which will simplify the deformed problem. The results from SRHWS are compared in detail with those from solving the spherical relativistic Hartree theory in the harmonic oscillator basis (SRHHO) and those in the coordinate space (SRHR). All of these approaches give identical nuclear properties such as total binding energies and root mean square radii for stable nuclei. For exotic nuclei, e.g., Ca-72, SRHWS satisfactorily reproduces the neutron density distribution from SRHR, while SRHHO fails. It is shown that the Woods-Saxon basis can be extended to more complicated situations for exotic nuclei where both deformation and pairing have to be taken into account.

Abstract:We use a new version of the reversible Parking Lot Model to study the compaction of vibrated polydisperse media. The particle sizes are distributed according to a truncated power law. We introduce a self-consistent desorption mechanism with a hierarchical initialization of the system. In this way, we approach densities close to unity. The final density depends on the polydispersity of the system as well as on the initialization and will reach a maximum value for a certain exponent in the power law.

Abstract:The ground-state properties of spherical nuclei over the entire periodic table are investigated by the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach with new force parameters SKI4 [P. G. Reinhard and H. Flocard, Nucl. Phys. A584 467 (1995)] plus a density-dependent pairing correlation. By introducing the density-dependent pairing correlation in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model with SKI4, both the isospin degree of freedom and the nucleon-nucleon correlation have been suitably included in the theory. The theoretical results agree very well with experimental data of binding energies, single particle energies and radii of spherical nuclei. The isotope shifts of charge radii in Ca, Ni, Sn, and Pb are also well reproduced.
Time-dependent Relativistic Hartree-Fock model with spherical symmetry

Abstract:This work establishes the time-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (TD-RHF) model with spherical symmetry for the first time. The time-dependent integro-differential Dirac equations are solved by expanding Dirac spinors on the spherical Dirac Woods-Saxon (DWS) basis. The numerical verification demonstrates the high conservation qualities for both the total binding energy and the particle number, as well as the time-reversal invariance of the system, which ensures the precision and reliability of the newly developed TD-RHF model. Subsequently, the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) mode of $^{208}$Pb is investigated using the RHF Lagrangian PKO1. The constrained energy of the ISGMR calculated by PKO1 is found to be in close agreement with the experimental data, and the strength function is similar to the results given by the relativistic Hartree-Fock plus random phase approximation. Based on the advantage of the TD-RHF model in avoiding complicated calculations of the residual interactions, the ISGMR mode of $^{208}$Pb is calculated by twelve relativistic effective Lagrangians. The results indicate that the value of the incompressibility of nuclear matter $K_\infty$ constrained by relativistic effective Lagrangians is in the range of $237\sim246$ MeV, which is lower than the previous investigations based on the relativistic models.

Abstract:The long-standing controversy about the isospin dependence of the effective Dirac mass in ab initio calculations of asymmetric nuclear matter is clarified by solving the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations in the full Dirac space. The symmetry energy and its slope parameter at the saturation density are E-sym(rho 0) = 33.1MeV and L = 65.2 MeV, in agreement with empirical and experimental values. Further applications predict the neutron star radius R1.4M circle dot approximate to 12 km and the maximum mass of a neutron star M-max <= 2.4M(circle dot)
Study of Finite Nuclei in the Improved Quark Mass Density-Dependent Model

Abstract:The improved quark mass density-dependent model is applied to study the properties of finite nuclei. After fixing all the parameters by nuclear matter properties, we use this model to investigate the properties of doubly magic nuclei from O-16 to Pb-208. In addition, it is the first time that relativistic mean field theory based on quark and meson degrees of freedom is applied to study the ground-state properties of the chain of isotope. The calculated binding energies, charge radii and separation energies agree with the available experimental data. It has been shown that our model can describe the properties of spherical finite nuclei successfully.
Numerical Relativity in Spherical Polar Coordinates: Off-center Simulations

Abstract:We have recently presented a new approach for numerical relativity simulations in spherical polar coordinates, both for vacuum and for relativistic hydrodynamics. Our approach is based on a reference-metric formulation of the BSSN equations, a factoring of all tensor components, as well as a partially implicit Runge-Kutta method, and does not rely on a regularization of the equations, nor does it make any assumptions about the symmetry across the origin. In order to demonstrate this feature we present here several off-centered simulations, including simulations of single black holes and neutron stars whose center is placed away from the origin of the coordinate system, as well as the asymmetric head-on collision of two black holes. We also revisit our implementation of relativistic hydrodynamics and demonstrate that a reference-metric formulation of hydrodynamics together with a factoring of all tensor components avoids problems related to the coordinate singularities at the origin and on the axes. As a particularly demanding test we present results for a shock wave propagating through the origin of the spherical polar coordinate system.

A Scheme for Jointed Two Component-scalar Relativistic Density Functional Calculations of Systems Containing Heavy Elements

Abstract:A scheme for joined two component-scalar relativistic density functional calculations of systems containing a few heavy atoms is proposed based on the relativistic density functional ZORA method with an atomic model potential approximation. The two component-relativistic density functional computation is performed only for a few heavy atoms with strong spin-orbit effects in the system, while the reminder part of the system is treated with the scalar relativistic density functional method, resulting in considerably reduction of computational efforts. The two kinds of computations are joined through a reasonable approximation in the calculation of kinetic energy matrix elements. The calculations for a series of molecules containing 6p block heavy elements are performed by using the proposed scheme and the normal two component-ZORA method. It is found that the results from the two kinds of calculations are in excellent agreement to each other when the lighter atoms belong to the second or third period. If the "non-heavy" atoms belong to the fourth period, the results from the proposed scheme slightly deviate from those obtained by the normal two component-ZORA calculations, showing that the spin-orbit effects have become significant relatively and cannot be neglected in the calculations with a high accuracy required. However, even in that case, the accuracy of the calculated results is still compatible with that of the current approximate density functionals and can satisfied the requirement for ordinary theoretical studies. The proposed scheme can effectively save computation efforts while the defects in Dyall's method can be avoided.

Abstract:Starting from the relativistic form of the Bonn potential as a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction, the full relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations are solved for finite nuclei in a fully self-consistent basis. This provides a relativistic ab initio calculation of the ground state properties of finite nuclei without any free parameters and without three-body forces. The convergence properties for the solutions of these coupled equations are discussed in detail for the example of the nucleus O-16. The binding energies, radii, and spin-orbit splittings of the doubly magic nuclei He-4, O-16, and Ca-40 are calculated and compared with the earlier RBHF calculated results in a fixed Dirac Woods-Saxon basis and other nonrelativistic ab initio calculated results based on pure two-body forces.

Abstract:The nonrelativistic reduction of the self-consistent covariant density functional theory is realized for the first time with the similarity renormalization group method. The reduced nonrelativistic Hamiltonian and densities are calculated by solving the corresponding flow equations with a novel expansion in terms of the inverse of the Dirac effective mass. The efficiency and accuracy of this newly proposed framework have been demonstrated for several typical spherical nuclei. It is found that the exact solutions of the total energies, traces of vector and scalar densities, and the root-mean-square radii are reproduced quite well for all nuclei. This allows one to directly compare and bridge the relativistic and nonrelativistic nuclear energy density functional theories in the future.

Abstract:We study numerical method for relativistic Vlasov equation and present a scheme for computing Vlasov equation based on Cartesian-spherical coordinate system, which can be used to reduce number of numerical grid for momentum space. Furthermore, a 4th order non-splitting finite volume scheme is proposed in order to solve momentum parts of relativistic Vlasov equation. In test problems, especially relativistic Landau problem, laser-plasma interaction are solved by using the scheme. We confirm the scheme with theoretically analysis as well as numerical comparison with results of PIC method.
