Abstract:Introduction: Traditional pesticides have poor-water solubility, high toxicity and low bioavailability. Therefore, it is of great significance for the sustainable and healthy development of the pesticide industry to develop efficient and ecofriendly new chemical pesticide products and formulations. Objectives: This study aims to synthesize a series of derivatives based on chalcone structure (HPPO), and then use the amphiphilic and self-assembly characteristics of N-succinyl-chitosan (NSCS) to prepare HPPO@NSCS nanoparticles (HPPO@NSCS NPs) in order to realize the green application of HPPO, and investigate the antifungal activity and mechanisms of HPPO@NSCS NPs. Methods: NSCS was synthesized by structural modification using chitosan as the carrier. Based on its amphiphilic and self-assembly characteristics, HPPO-16@NSCS NPs were reasonably prepared by combining with active small molecule HPPO-16. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of NSCS and HPPO-16@NSCS NPs. The inhibitory activity of nanopesticides against Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani) was tested in vivo and in vitro. The mechanism of antifungal action was discussed from the observation of pathogen morphology, fluorescence staining and enzyme activity determination. Results: 28 small molecules based on chalcone structure (HPPO-1-28), NSCS and HPPO-16@NSCS were successfully synthesized. The application of HPPO-16@NSCS could impair the development, cell structure, cellular energy utilization, and metabolism pathways of the fungi. The protective effects of HPPO-16@NSCS NPs on rice leaves and leaf sheaths were 80.9 and 76.1 %, respectively, which were better than those of azoxystrobin. Conclusion: This study reveals that these simple chalcone derivatives can be further explored as viable antibacterial alternatives and NSCS as a novel pesticide matrix can be used for the delivery of more insoluble pesticides.
Fabrication of pH-responsive nanoparticles for co-delivery of fungicide and salicylic acid with synergistic antifungal activity

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive co-delivery nanopesticides with different action mechanisms have received widespread attention due to the improved bioactivity, long effective duration, and reduced risks to the environment. Herein, fungicide tebuconazole (TEB) and plant immune inducer poly(salicylic acid) (PSA) co-assembled nanoparticles (TP NPs) are fabricated through non-covalent interactions without the use of any adjuvants. The results show that the obtained TP NPs have excellent physicochemical properties, displaying uniform morphology with an average particle size of 152 nm, low PDI (0.064), and high surface activity. The TP NPs exhibit acid-responsive behaviors, enabling the intelligent release of active ingredients in the specific acidic microenvironment caused by the invasion of plant pathogens. In vitro fungicidal activities of TP NPs are 1.9 and 1.6 times higher than TEB technical against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Fusarium graminearum respectively. Additionally, the stimuli-responsive co-delivery fungicidal nanosystem not only has a longer effective duration compared to both TEB technical and TP Mix but also significantly reduces the genetic toxicity of TEB to the plants. Therefore, this fungicide and plant immune inducer co-delivery nanosystem provides a novel strategy for development of multimode synergetic nanopesticide and sustainable plant disease management.

Innovative Approach to Nano Thiazole-Zn with Promising Physicochemical and Bioactive Properties by Nanoreactor Construction

Abstract:Nanotechnology has provided a novel approach for the preparation of a safe and highly effective pesticide formulation. Thiazole-Zn, a widely used bactericide, was successfully prepared at nanoscale by an innovative approach of final synthesis process control. Its plausible formation mechanism based on restricted particle aggregation in a nanoreactor was elucidated. Then in order to assess the application performance of thiazole-Zn nanoparticle, the nanoformulation (NPF) was conveniently formulated. Interestingly, the physicochemical properties of NPF showed better than that of the commercial pesticide formulation (CPF) in dispersibility, wettability, spreadability, and stability. At the same time, the in vitro bioassay showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of NPF against Xanthomonas oryzae pv Oryzae (XOO), Xanthomonas oryzae pv Oryzicola (XOC), Erwinia carotovora subsp. Carotovora (Jones) Holland (ECC), and Erwinia chrysanthemi pv Zeae (ECZ) were 46.88, 93.75, 93.75, and 375.00 mg/L, respectively, whereas those of CPF were 93.75, 375.00, 375.00, and 875.00 mg/L, respectively. Therefore, NPF exhibited stronger antibacterial activity against the above-mentioned pathogens. Moreover, NPF was more effective to bacterial blight of rice than CPF in field trial. As a conclusion, nanotechnology for pesticides by synthesis process control will have a potential in improving the utilization efficiency and relieving the corresponding environmental pollution.
Copper Oxide Nanoparticles: an Effective Suppression Tool Against Bacterial Leaf Blight of Rice and Its Impacts on Plants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In order to address the challenges of food security for the ever-increasing population, the emergent of nanotechnology is an alternate technology of choice which recently accounts for the production of safer pesticides and as a substitute for conventional fertilizer. The antidrug resistance of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and build-up of chemicals in the environment has made it necessary to find alternate safe measures that are effective in diseases management. Hence, in this study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) was green synthesized by Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. flower extract. RESULTS The characterization of CuONPs using UV - Vis spectrophotometer, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) ascertained the presence of CuONPs which were nanorods of 28.1 nm. CuONPs significantly obstructed growth and biofilm development of Xoo by 79.65 and 79.17 % respectively. Antibacterial mechanism of CuONPs was found to be as a result of wounding cell membrane, hence, giving rise to exodus of intracellular content and generation of oxidative reactive oxygen species which invariably, inhibited Xoo respiration and growth. The toxicity study under greenhouse conditions revealed that CuONPs significantly increased growth variables and biomass of rice and reduced bacterial leaf blight. Application of CuONPs on Arabidopsis improved the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters; the ΦPSII was significantly increased by 152.05 % in comparison to control. CONCLUSION Altogether, this result suggests that CuONPs in low concentration (200.0 μg/ml) are not toxic to plants and can serve as nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides. Abstract:The biosynthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) offers great potential for plant disease management due to their potent antimicrobial properties and environmental safety. However, the precise mechanisms underlying their antifungal mode of action and role in suppressing mycotoxins remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which ZnONPs suppress the pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearium, known to cause Fusarium head blight in wheat. Additionally, it investigates how ZnONPs mitigate the production of mycotoxins, which pose risks to humans and ruminants. The study demonstrates that ZnONPs, bioproduced by Pseudomonas poae (P. poae), inhibit not only fungal growth, colony formation, and spore germination, but also significantly reduce mycotoxin production of F. graminearium by inhibiting the synthesis of deoxynivalenol (DON), downregulating the FgTRI gene, and causing morphological alterations of the toxisomes. The results also highlight that ZnONPs exert significant effects on fungi through multiple mechanisms, including cell wall damage and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, ZnONPs effectively inhibit F. graminearium in wheat leaves and coleoptiles. Fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical microscopy all show that ZnONPs stop F. graminearium from getting into wheat plants and colonising them. Overall, the findings of this study provide evidence that ZnONPs are highly effective in reducing F. graminearium colonization in wheat plants and effectively decreasing mycotoxin production through multiple pathways.

Abstract:Considering the microenvironment of pathogens, the use of highly biocompatible antibacterial materials loaded with fungicides and the on-demand delivery of fungicides through controlled release can effectively improve the biocompatibility and antibacterial effect of existing fungicides. In this study, we used mesoporous poly-dopamine nanoparticles (MPDA NPs) as a carrier, prochloraz (Pro) as a loading agent, and benzimidazole (BIZ) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex as a blocking agent to prepare the on-demand delivery nano-pesticides Pro@MPDA-BIZ@β-CD (hereinafter abbreviated as PMBD), which can be administered at different stages. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum secretes oxalic acid factor to create an acidic microenvironment, and the nano-system quickly releases fungicide Pro into the mycelium. MPDA materials also responds to oxalic acid to jointly reduce the pathogenicity of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, effectively inhibiting the growth of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and realizing the treatment of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection. On the other hand, when plants are not infected with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, MPDA with a photothermal effect triggers the release of fungicides under the irradiation of near-infrared light, thus preventing Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection. The in vitro release experiment showed that the cumulative release of Pro under low pH and near-infrared light irradiation was 2.68 times and 2.04 times higher than that under neutral and no light conditions, respectively. On the other hand, the rich functional groups on MPDA-BIZ@β-CD(hereinafter abbreviated as MBD) gave the system good wettability, and the contact angles of MBD on Chinese cabbage and tomato leaves were reduced by 14.85° and 41.54°, respectively, which enhanced its resistance to rainwater erosion and prevented the fungicides from being lost to the environment. In addition, bio-safety experiments have shown that PMBD has good biocompatibility to plant germination and soil microorganisms.

Abstract:The abuse of antibiotics has led to widespread antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and environmental pollution. In order to solve these problems, a lot of studies have been carried out mainly focusing on the modification and recombination of organic reagents, but bacteria are still easy to adapt to it, so they cannot be thoroughly solved. Here, we present an integrated pollution-free synergistic antibacterial nanotechnology using inorganic nano-Cu2O, which could not only enhance the efficacy of aminoglycoside antibiotics, but also eliminate their environmental pollution by photocatalytic degradation. It was found that Cu2O showed significantly synergistic antibacterial effect (1+1>2) when combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics against Escherichia coli. The inhibition zone area increased by 59.0% when Cu2O combined with neomycin. This reduces dosage and the risk of AMR, and does not pollute the environment after degradation. Next, to explore the synergistic mechanisms, we have studied the interaction of antibiotics with nanoparticles, as well as the interaction of antibacterial agents with bacteria. At last, we believe that the destruction of cell walls by Cu2O facilitates the entry of antibiotics into cells is the reason for their synergy.
Facile pathway to generate agrochemical nanosuspensions integrating super-high load, eco-friendly excipients, intensified preparation process, and enhanced potency

Abstract:An aqueous nanosuspension of agrochemicals unlike pharmaceutics has to achieve massive production in an effective way, capable to ensure sufficient profits in commercialization. This work implements the flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) technique to effectively generate agrochemical nanosuspension, anticipatedly overcoming such an obstacle. Azoxystrobin, a broad spectrum fungicide, in either acetone or ethanol is used herein as a mode agrochemical. To ensure a green and practical utilization, three kinds of commercially available and eco-friendly surfactants, i.e., poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PEG-b-PLGA), Tween 80 and alkyl polyglucosides (APGs), are employed for stabilizing the nanoparticles. The results show that the polymeric stabilizer, PEG-b-PLGA, has the best stabilization efficiency, and can maintain the particles below 100 nm for at least three weeks. The azoxystrobin load of the nanoparticles reaches as high as 77 wt.%, beneficial to enhancing the biological potency. Moreover, the FNP brings the particles a much smaller size, narrower size distribution, better size stability, and higher biological efficacy than the ones made via a traditional method of the drop and stir (DS). The nanosuspensions present superior fungicidal performances over a prevailing counterpart from Syngenta. This study proves an enhanced biological potency and reduced dosage of agrochemical nanosuspension made via the FNP, indicating a remarkable advantage of the FNP over the conventional preparation. The integration of a super-high load, eco-friendly excipients, intensified preparation process, enhanced potency, and reduced dosage creates a promising pathway to generate a green aqueous nanosuspension of agrochemicals.

Abstract:Plant diseases prompted by fungi and bacteria are one of the most serious threats to global crop production and food security. The destruction of these infections posed a major challenge to plant protection by chemical control. Herein, we develop CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ nanoparticles (NPs) using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), phytic acid (PA) and metal ions (Zn 2+ ) via flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) strategy. Metal complexes of PA with specified antibacterial and antifungal activities are expected to hold the potential and play a significant role in antimicrobial treatment. The size and size distribution of NPs was confirmed through Dynamic and Static Light Scatterer (DSLS). In acidic-infection microenvironment, the CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ NPs can disintegrate and release Zn 2+ in situ thus stimulated the corresponding antimicrobial activity. These CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ NPs showed outstanding antibacterial efficacy (98 %) against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria in vitro, as well as an impressive antifungal efficacy of 98 % and 81 % against R. solani and B. cinerea at 50 μg/mL respectively. This study contributes a prospective idea to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid NPs as environmentally-friendly and safe agricultural antimicrobials.

Nanopesticide Formulation from Pyraclostrobin and Graphene Oxide as a Nanocarrier and Application in Controlling Plant Fungal Pathogens

Abstract:Efficient and environment-friendly nanopesticide delivery systems are critical for the sustainable development of agriculture. In this study, a graphene oxide nanocomposite was developed for pesticide delivery and plant protection with pyraclostrobin as the model pesticide. First, graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite was prepared through fast adsorption of pyraclostrobin onto graphene oxide with a maximum loading of 87.04%. The as-prepared graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite exhibited high stability during two years of storage, suggesting its high potential in practical application. The graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite could achieve temperature (25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C) and pH (5, 7 and 9) slow-release behavior, which overcomes the burst release of conventional pyraclostrobin formulation. Furthermore, graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite exhibited considerable antifungal activities against Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum both in vitro and in vivo. The cotoxicity factor assay revealed that there was a synergistic interaction when graphene oxide and pyraclostrobin were combined at the ratio of 1:1 against the mycelial growth of Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum with co-toxicity coefficient values exceeding 100 in vitro. The control efficacy of graphene oxide–pyraclostrobin nanocomposite was 71.35% and 62.32% against Fusarium graminearum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in greenhouse, respectively, which was higher than that of single graphene oxide and pyraclostrobin. In general, the present study provides a candidate nanoformulation for pathogenic fungal control in plants, and may also expand the application of graphene oxide materials in controlling plant fungal pathogens and sustainable agriculture.

Facile, Smart, and Degradable Metal–Organic Framework Nanopesticides Gated with Fe III -Tannic Acid Networks in Response to Seven Biological and Environmental Stimuli

Abstract:Nanopesticides were selected as one of the top 10 emerging technologies in chemistry that will change our world in 2019. Facile, smart, and degradable metal–organic framework MIL-101(FeIII) nanopesticides gated with FeIII-tannic acid (TA) networks are created using a universal strategy. The capping of the FeIII-TA network gatekeepers is instinctively oriented by the coordinatively unsaturated FeIII sites on the surfaces of the MIL-101(FeIII) nanocarriers; thus, their combination is perfectly matched. This is the first example that one smart gated nanoparticle is integrated with seven stimuli-responsive performances to meet the diverse controlled release of encapsulated cargos by the disassembly of the gatekeepers and/or the degradation of the nanocarriers. More importantly, each of the seven stimuli (acidic/alkaline pH, H2O2, glutathione, phosphates, ethylenediaminetetraacetate, and near-infrared light of sunlight) is closely related to the biological and natural environments of crops, and the biocompatible nanocarriers are eventually degraded against bioaccumulation even if the nanopesticides enter crops. These mechanisms of the stimuli-responsive controlled release are identified and clearly elaborated. It is found that the natural polyphenol can improve the wettability of aqueous droplets of nanopesticides on model hydrophobic foliage for pesticide adhesion and retention. The nanopesticides encapsulated with the fungicide tebuconazole show high fungicidal activities against pathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia solani (rice sheath blight) and Fusarium graminearum (wheat head blight); good safety on seed germination, seedling emergence, and plant height of wheat by seed dressing; and satisfactory control efficacy in wheat powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis in the greenhouse. The association between daytime attendance and out-of-hours frequent attendance among adult patients in general practice.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Frequent attenders (FAs) account for a large proportion of daytime consultations in general practice. However, no studies have so far been conducted to establish whether daytime FAs are also out-of-hours FAs. AIM To analyse the association between daytime attendance and out-of-hours frequent attendance. DESIGN OF STUDY A registry-based study of individual face-to-face contacts with general practice during daytime and out of hours, based on National Health Insurance files. SETTING General practices in Aarhus County, Denmark (630,000 inhabitants). METHOD A total of 416,172 adults, i.e. all adults registered with a general practice during a 12-month period from November 1997 to October 1998 were included. Odds ratios (OR) for frequent attendance out of hours were stratified for age, sex, and frequency of contacts during daytime were calculated. RESULTS A strong association was observed between daytime level of attendance and out-of-hours level of attendance (OR = 2.9-6.3 among patients with low daytime attendance, OR = 33.7-99.8 among daytime FAs). Daytime FAs accounted for one-third of the daytime contacts, one-third of the out-of-hours contacts, and 42% of out-of-hours FAs. More than half of the daytime FAs did not attend out of hours. Two per cent of the out-of-hours FAs had no contacts during the daytime. CONCLUSION Frequent attendance in daytime was very strongly associated with frequent attendance out of hours, and daytime FAs accounted for a large proportion of all contacts with general practice.

Abstract:Fusarium oxysporum is a destructive plant pathogen with robust survival mechanisms, complicating control efforts. This study aimed to develop nanoformulated fungicides, screen antagonistic bacteria, and evaluate their combined efficacy. A novel self-emulsifying nanoemulsion (DZW) was formulated using zein and benzaldehyde-modified wheat gluten (BgWG) as carriers for dimethachlon (DTN). The preparation process optimized material ratios and emulsification techniques. Concurrently, antagonistic bacterial strains against F. oxysporum were screened via the plate standoff method, identifying Bacillus velezensis MLY71 as both antagonistic and compatible with DTN. The DZW nanoemulsion achieved a particle size of 93.22 nm, an encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 90.57%, and a DTN loading capacity (LC) of 67.09%, with sustained release over 96 h. The combination of DTN (0.04 mg·mL−1) and B. velezensis MLY71 (1 × 104 CFU·mL−1) achieved a 76.66% inhibition rate against F. oxysporum MLY127, 1.71 times greater than DTN alone, indicating significant synergy. At a DTN concentration of 0.20 mg·mL−1, the combination of DZW and MLY71 showed a synergy coefficient of 1.33. This synergy was also observed in soil environments, indicating its adaptability for controlling soil-borne pathogens. As sustainable management continues to gain attention in agricultural disease control, this study offers a promising strategy for achieving higher efficacy with the same fungicide dose or satisfactory control with reduced fungicide application. The excellent drug-loading performance of BgWG also expanded the applications of the wheat by-product gluten.

Abstract:Plant pathogens constantly develop resistance to antimicrobial agents, and this poses great challenges to plant protection. Therefore, there is a pressing need to search for new antimicrobials. The combined use of antimicrobial agents with different antifungal mechanisms has been recognized as a promising approach to manage plant diseases. Graphene oxide (GO) is a newly emerging and highly promising antimicrobial agent against various plant pathogens in agricultural science. In this study, the inhibitory activity of GO combined with fungicides (Mancozeb, Cyproconazol and Difenoconazole) against Fusarium graminearum was investigated in vivo and in vitro. The results revealed that the combination of GO and fungicides has significant synergistic inhibitory effects on the mycelial growth, mycelial biomass and spore germination of F. graminearum relative to single fungicides. The magnitude of synergy was found to depend on the ratio of GO and fungicide in the composite. In field tests, GO–fungicides could significantly reduce the disease incidence and disease severity, exhibiting a significantly improved control efficacy on F. graminearum. The strong synergistic activity of GO with existing fungicides demonstrates the great application potential of GO in pest management.

Abstract:Poor foliar deposition and retention of pesticides results in serious pesticide residues and environmental pollution. Organic-inorganic hybridized nanoparticles (OIHN), combining the advantages of organic and inorganic materials, can be used as carriers to load pesticides for efficient and safe application. Herein, a novel multifunctional OIHN composed of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HACC) was constructed and used as a delivery system for prothioconazole (PTC). The resultant PTC@MSNs-HACC exhibited a remarkable loading capacity of 39.07 wt% and demonstrated enhanced PTC release (31.47 %) under alkaline conditions. The UV-shielding properties of MSNs efficiently shielded PTC from photodegradation, increasing its photostability by over threefold. The strong positive charge of HACC conferred excellent adhesion of PTC@MSNs-HACC to fungal cell membranes, leading to high deposition on wheat leaves with improved rain-wash resistance (increased by 30 %). Consequently, PTC@MSNs-HACC (EC50: 12.48 mg/L) exhibited superior wheat scab control compared to PTC emulsifiable concentrate (EC50: 28.49 mg/L). Additionally, PTC@MSNs-HACC displayed excellent uptake and transport in plants, ensuring plant safety and reducing toxicity to zebrafish by >1-fold. The potential application of the developed PTC@MSNs-HACC in agricultural production holds significant promise and is anticipated to find widespread use in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Nanomaterials (NMs) have received considerable attention in the field of agrochemicals due to their special properties, such as small particle size, surface structure, solubility and chemical composition. The application of NMs and nanotechnology in agrochemicals dramatically overcomes the defects of conventional agrochemicals, including low bioavailability, easy photolysis, and organic solvent pollution, etc. In this review, we describe advances in the application of NMs in chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which are the two earliest and most researched areas of NMs in agrochemicals. Besides, this article concerns with the new applications of NMs in other agrochemicals, such as bio-pesticides, nucleic acid pesticides, plant growth regulators (PGRs), and pheromone. We also discuss challenges and the industrialization trend of NMs in the field of agrochemicals. Constructing nano-agrochemical delivery system via NMs and nanotechnology facilitates the improvement of the stability and dispersion of active ingredients, promotes the precise delivery of agrochemicals, reduces residual pollution and decreases labor cost in different application scenarios, which is potential to maintain the sustainability of agricultural systems and improve food security by increasing the efficacy of agricultural inputs. Abstract:The unscientific application of pesticides can easily cause a series of ecological environmental safety issues, which seriously restrict the sustainable development of modern agriculture. The great progress in nanotechnology has allowed the continuous development of plant protection strategies. The nanonization and delivery of pesticides offer many advantages, including their greater absorption and conduction by plants, improved efficacy, reduced dosage, delayed resistance, reduced residues, and protection from natural enemies and beneficial insects. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in multifunctional nanoparticles and nanopesticides. The definition of nanopesticides, the types of nanoparticles used in agriculture and their specific synergistic mechanisms are introduced, their safety is evaluated, and their future application prospects, about which the public is concerned, are examined.

Abstract:Synthetic fungicides have been widely used to protect crops from fungal diseases. However, excessive use of synthetic fungicides leads to the generation of fungicide resistance in fungal pathogens. Recently, smart cargo delivery systems have been introduced for the construction of a pesticide delivery nanoplatform, benefiting from their controlled release performance. Herein, a fungal pathogen microenvironment-responsive supramolecular fungicide nanoplatform has been designed and constructed, using quaternary ammonium salt (Q)-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-Q NPs) as nanocarriers loaded with berberine hydrochloride (BH) and carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP[5]A) as nanogates to form BH-loaded CP[5] NPs for effective inhibition of Botrytis cinerea. CP[5]A as nanogates can endow the fungicide nanoplatform with pH stimuli-responsive release features for the control of fungicide release. The loaded BH, as a natural plant fungicide, provides an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling B. cinerea. Interestingly, we use oxalic acid (OA) secreted by B. cinerea as a trigger so that BH can be released from the fungicide nanoplatform on demand under pathogen microenvironments for controlling B. cinerea. Abstract:Aims: In this study, the antifungal efficacy and phytotoxicity of silica coated porous zinc oxide nanoparticle (SZNP) were analyzed as this nanocomposite was observed to be a suitable platform for slow release fungicides and has the promise to bring down the dosage of other agrochemicals as well. Methods and results: Loading and release kinetics of tricyclazole, a potent fungicide, were analyzed by measuring surface area (SBET) using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) isotherm and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), respectively. The antifungal efficacy of ZnO nanoparticle (ZNP) and SZNP was investigated on two phytopathogenic fungi (Alternaria solani and Aspergillus niger). The morphological changes to the fungal structure due to ZNP and SZNP treatment were studied by field emission-scanning electron microscopy. Nanoparticle mediated elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in fungal samples was detected by analyzing the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, thiol content, lipid peroxidation, and by 2,7-dichlorofluorescin diacetate assay. The phytotoxicity of these two nanostructures was assessed in rice plants by measuring primary plant growth parameters. Further, the translocation of the nanocomposite in the same plant model system was examined by checking the presence of fluorescein isothiocyanate tagged SZNP within the plant tissue. Conclusions: ZNP had superior antifungal efficacy than SZNP and caused the generation of more ROS in the fungal samples. Even then, SZNP was preferred as an agrochemical delivery vehicle because, unlike ZNP alone, it was not toxic to plant system. Moreover, as silica in nanoform is entomotoxic in nature and nano ZnO has antifungal property, both the cargo (agrochemical) and the carrier system (silica coated porous nano zinc oxide) will have a synergistic effect in crop protection.

Abstract:The development of modern agriculture has prompted the greater input of herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. However, precision release and targeted delivery of these agrochemicals still remain a challenge. Here, a pesticide-fertilizer all-in-one combination (PFAC) strategy and deep learning are employed to form a system for controlled and targeted delivery of agrochemicals. This system mainly consists of three components: (1) hollow mesoporous silica (HMS), to encapsulate herbicides and phase-change material; (2) polydopamine (PDA) coating, to provide a photothermal effect; and (3) a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF8), to provide micronutrient Zn2+ and encapsulate insecticides. Results show that the PFAC at concentration of 5 mg mL-1 reaches the phase transition temperature of 1-tetradecanol (37.5 °C) after 5 min of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (800 nm, 0.5 W cm-2). The data of corn and weed are collected and relayed to deep learning algorithms for model building to realize object detection and further targeted weeding. In-field treatment results indicated that the growth of chicory herb was significantly inhibited when treated with the PFAC compared with the blank group after 24 h under NIR irradiation for 2 h. This system combines agrochemical innovation and artificial intelligence technology, achieves synergistic effects of weeding and insecticide and nutrient supply, and will potentially achieve precision and sustainable agriculture.
