Abstract:Signal detection for vehicle-to-vehicle and wireless network application has motivated new design for conditions in which channel is time-selective fading. Since the physical layer (PHY) forms the foundation of the communication protocol stack, the performance of this layer affects all high layers of the system stack. Quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QO-STBC) can provide full rate transmission and partial diversity under low decoding complexity. Previous papers on QO-STBC assume that the channels are slow fading or remain static over the length of the codeword. However, time-selective channels do exist, and in this case, the decoder proposed in Jafarkhani (2001) cannot be used to achieve a proper error performance. In order to mitigate the severe performance degradation, the zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) decoders are employed in this paper. We also propose a zero forcing interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (ZF-IC-DFE) and a minimum mean-square error interference cancellation decision-feedback equalizer (MMSE-IC-DFE) via Cholesky factorization of the channel Gram matrix after performing interference cancellation. By feeding back past decisions on previously detected symbols, DFE schemes can achieve an additional performance gain compared to their corresponding linear decoders. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Time Domain Compensation of I/Q Imbalance in Digital Receivers

Abstract:The performance degradation of digital receivers caused by I/Q gain and phase imbalances is improved by a method to estimate and compensate for I/Q imbalances based on the power and orthogonality relationships between the in-phase and quadrature channels of the time domain data.Both of the estimates and the compensation are carried out in the time domain which allows for a flexible tradeoff between computational complexity,estimation time and compensation performance.Because the estimation of the I/Q imbalance does not need any pilots or training sequence,this technique is applicable to a wide range of single-carrier and/or multi-carrier communication and broadcasting systems.Simulations of a 64QAM-OFDM system show that this technique can achieve the optimal bit error rate(BER) performance under AWGN channel,and can reduce the performance degradation to about 0.1 dB when the BER is 10-3 under frequency-selective fading channel.

Abstract:Direct-conversion receivers (DCRs) have been widely used in recent years due to their small size and low power consumption. However, the mismatch between the in-phase (I) and the quadrature (Q) branches will seriously affect the performance of the DCRs. This paper proposes a novel blind compensation method to suppress the interference introduced by IQ mismatch. Based on the Hilbert transform, our proposed method can obtain the orthogonal signal of the I-channel signal by utilizing the Weaver architecture. Compared with traditional compensation methods, the main difference of the proposed method is that it ignores prior information, training sequences, and additional hardware circuits. Furthermore, the complexity of the proposed blind compensation method is low because no iterative operations are involved in the compensation process. The simulation results show that the proposed method has an excellent compensation performance, especially in wideband applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present and analyze an interference avoidance scheme for OFDM cognitive radio systems. From an active suppression point of view, it effectively prevents the negative effect of intercarrier interference that a cognitive radio may inflict on primary transmission due to frequency offset. At the same time, it ensures bandwidth efficiency of secondary transmission. Based on the least square error criterion, it is robust to frequency offset estimation error and has a low computational complexity. Furthermore, its generalized form and algorithm can simply adapt to different frequency offsets and be extended to multiple users' case. Simulation results show the enhanced performance of our proposed scheme, which greatly reduces the interference power in comparison with the passive tone null scheme.

Abstract:The wideband Doppler effect in underwater acoustic (UWA) channels introduces considerable intercarrier interference (ICI) to the subcarriers of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). To mitigate the ICI, a two-step method can be employed: First, estimate the Doppler factor and perform resampling accordingly; then, estimate and compensate for the residual carrier frequency offset. In fast time-varying UWA channels, the demodulation performance of OFDM may suffer from degradation because of time-varying Doppler effects. In this research, an algorithm to address this issue by dividing the symbols into two time-domain segments and compensating for different frequency offsets after resampling to mitigate severe Doppler interference is proposed. The proposed algorithm achieves performance improvements in simulated UWA channels as well as in at-sea conditions.

Abstract:To solve the problem of deterioration of system performance for the analog front-end (AFE) non-idealities, such as Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO), IQ mismatch and Sampling Frequency Offset (SFO) in OFDM system, this paper proposes a novel joint estimation and compensation algorithm, which estimates and compensates CFO and IQ imbalance in time domain, while compensates Residual Carrier Frequency Offset (RCFO) and SFO in frequency domain. Compared with the traditional algorithms, the proposed scheme uses fewer data supporting resources to improve the estimation accuracy by introducing an iterative updating scheme. Significant non-idealities introduced, the proposed scheme is also able to achieve a low bit error rate.

Abstract:Due to the technical and cost limitations, wireless systems suffer from various hardware impairments, including phase noise, power amplifier nonlinearity, carrier frequency offset and in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance. These impairments can highly degrade the physical layer performance and are usually compensated separately by using model-based signal processing techniques. However, due to the high carrier frequency and large bandwidth of 5G new radio, the coupling effects between different impairments are highly aggravated, which greatly degrades the performance of individual compensation modules for different impairments. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based method, which jointly addresses the hardware impairments directly from the received data. Specifically, we focus on carrier frequency offset and in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance, and propose a deep neural network with multiple parallel subnets for joint compensation. Numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method using separate compensation modules in practical signal-to-noise ratio regions, and the performance improvement further increases when the cyclic prefix length or the pilot length is limited.

Abstract:For direct-conversion transceiver, IQ imbalance is significant at both transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), which brings in image interference and degrades the transmission quality. In order to handle this problem, the maximum-likelihood algorithm is employed to jointly estimate TX and RX IQ imbalance, and the corresponding Cramer–Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are calculated. Furthermore, a compensation mechanism is proposed to combat IQ imbalance, which is derived from the criterion of maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR). In addition, comprehensive simulations indicate that the mean square errors of the proposed estimation coincide with the CRLBs. Also, the proposed MSINR compensation achieves competitive performance, in terms of both SINR and bit error rate.

Abstract:Conventional OFDM transmission system uses a fixed-length Cyclic Prefix to counteract Inter-Symbol Interferences (ISI) caused by channel delay spreading under wireless mobile environment. This may cause considerable performance deterioration when the CP length is less than the channel RMS delay spread, or may decrease the system power and spectrum efficiency when it is much larger. A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme is proposed in this paper to adapt the CP length to the variation of channel delay spread. AOFDM-VCPL utilizes the preamble or pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet to estimate the channel RMS delay spread; and then uses a criterion to calculate the CP length, which finally affects the OFDM transmitter. As illustrated in the simulation section, by deploying this scheme in a typical wireless environment, the system can transmit at data rate 11.5 Mb/s higher than conventional non-adaptive system while gaining a 0.65 dB power saving at the same BER performance.
A novel low-complexity ICI cancellation for multi-user OFDM systems

Abstract:It is well known that the intercarrier interference (ICI) caused by the frequency offset may significantly degrade the system performance. Conventional ICI self-cancellation schemes can mitigate the ICI effect dramatically without doing frequency offset compensation, but the expense of halving spectral efficiency makes them less valuable. On the other hand, ICI can be suppressed by performing correlative coding in the frequency domain without halving spectral efficiency; however, this scheme usually cannot provide satisfactory performance in terms of the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) and the detection errors generated in the receiver would be propagated through OFDM symbols. It proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system over frequency selective time-varying fading channels. As the symbol duration increases, OFDM is robust to channel multipath dispersion. Based on the assumption, the proposed method solves the linear channel parameters of each path and creates a channel matrix which can be used for ICI cancellation. Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress the ICI effects induced by the time variant channels and reduce the error floor of bit error rate (BER).

Abstract:In the wideband wireless systems, the frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance is a severe impairment which decreases the communication quality. We propose a blind calibration scheme for compensating the I/Q imbalance in transmitters. The parameter estimation makes use of the second-order statistics of the signals. And a closed-form solution is obtained. The compensation structure consists of two parts, corresponding to the frequency-dependent imbalance and the frequency-independent imbalance respectively. The simulation results demonstrate the excellent performance of the method. The average IRR of compensated signal can achieve 54dB, which improves about 30dB compared with uncompensated signal. Besides, the robustness of the proposed method is proved by the simulation as well.

Abstract:Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO)-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a key technology in LTE systems (LTE-maritime and LTE-railway technologies). The MIMO-OFDM system used in coastal railway communication equipment is especially needed many RF (radio frequency) chains. Therefore, the structure of analog front end is very complex and it shows the worse power efficiency. To reduce these problems, a direct conversion receiver (DCR) is reconsidered from the perspective of its cost and power consumption. However, IQ imbalance in the DCR causes inter-carrier interference and degradation of the system performance. In this paper, we propose joint channel and IQ imbalance compensation method using an extended channel matrix with a comb-type pilot of MIMO-OFDM for coastal railways. Estimation with interpolation technique reduces the number of pilot symbols and improves the data rate. After channel and IQ imbalance estimation, we compensate them by the Zero-Forcing scheme. Therefore, the proposed method can improve communication performance in costal railway environment with low computational complexity.

Abstract:The Chinese digital terrestrial/television multimedia broadcasting (DTMB) standard adopts time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) as the modulation technology. TDS-OFDM system uses time domain PN sequences as frame header and thus has to employ square root raised cosine (SRRC) filters to perform spectrum shaping. In order to ensure synchronization performance, the system needs oversampling and symbol timing recovery (STR), which is sensitive to sampling position offset and increases the implementation complexity. In this paper, a novel transmission scheme utilizing virtual subcarrier is proposed to mitigate this problem. The proposed system does not require oversampling and SRRC filters. Compared with the conventional TDS-OFDM system, simulation results prove that the proposed scheme has better performance in presence of sampling position offset in various multipath channels.

Abstract:The degrading effect of RF impairments on the performance of wireless communication systems is more pronounced in MIMO-OFDM transmission. Two of the most common impairments that significantly limit the performance of MIMO-OFDM transceivers are IQ-imbalance and phase noise. Low-complexity estimation and compensation techniques that can jointly remove the effect of these impairments are highly desirable. In this paper, we propose a simple joint estimation and compensation technique to estimate channel, phase noise and IQ-imbalance parameters in MIMO-OFDM systems under multipath slow fading channels. A subcarrier multiplexed preamble structure to estimate the channel and impairment parameters with minimum overhead is introduced and used in the estimation of IQ-imbalance parameters as well as the initial estimation of effective channel matrix including common phase error (CPE). We then use a novel tracking method based on the second order statistics of the inter-carrier interference (ICI) and noise to update the effective channel matrix throughout an OFDM frame. Simulation results for a variety of scenarios show that the proposed low-complexity estimation and compensation technique can efficiently improve the performance of MIMO-OFDM systems in terms of bit-error-rate (BER).

Abstract:Direct-conversion transceiver obtains increasing attentions due to its low power consumption, but it confronts with serious IQ imbalance. In this paper, a three-stage treatment of transmitter/receiver (TX/RX) IQ imbalance and channel, in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO), is proposed for single-carrier-frequency-domain-equalization (SC-FDE) systems. First, RX IQ imbalance and CFO are handled with a repetitive preamble. Second, joint responses of TX IQ imbalance and channel are estimated by designing another preamble via complementary Golay codes. Third, joint compensation of TX IQ imbalance and time-varying channel is conducted using the minimal-mean-square-error criterion. Simulations are presented to verify the proposed method, in terms of normalized mean square error for the estimation and bit error rate for the overall system.

Abstract:The implementation of OFDM system suffers from the effect of phase noise and IQ imbalance, which disturb the orthogonality between subcarriers and cause intercarrier interference (10). When treated separately, effective algorithms, such as the ICI self-cancellation scheme, exist for suppression of phase noise as well as IQ imbalance. However, with both effects present, such algorithms do not lead to effective suppression. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to jointly combat the IQ imbalance and phase noise at baseband. An IQ imbalance estimation and compensation module, which is robust against phase noise, is added in the ICI self-cancellation based OFDM system. After the IQ imbalance has been compensated in the time domain, the ICI self-cancellation scheme of data-conjugate method is used to suppress the phase noise and the residual IQ imbalance. This scheme has a fast convergence and a nearly optimal BER performance even for large IQ imbalance in AWGN channel. In multipath channel, even for large IQ imbalance, this joint suppression scheme offers frequency diversity gain and as a result, the BER performance surpasses that of the conventional OFDM system without IQ imbalance and phase noise.

Abstract:Space-time-frequency coding is an important technology for OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) under MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) channels to achieve high speed wireless multimedia transmission. Traditionally, multiple DFT (discrete Fourier transform) blocks, each corresponding to one receive antenna, are employed at the receiver of a MIMO-OFDM system with space-time- frequency coding, which induces huge complexity. In this paper, we propose a pre-DFT processing scheme for such a system, where the number of DFT blocks employed can be adjusted, thus enabling effective complexity and performance tradeoff. Simulation results will show that, under some channel conditions, the performance of the proposed scheme can be almost as good as the traditional optimal scheme but with much lower complexity.
