Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were introduced into graphene oxide (GO) by a water bath method, and PVA/PAA/GO (PPG) with a three-dimensional double network structure was prepared under the action of hydrogen bonding. With the help of a large number of oxygen-containing functional groups and a three-dimensional double network structure in the PPG composite hydrogel, the adsorption performance of anionic and cationic dyes was greatly improved, and the adsorption rates of 100 mg∙L −1 malachite green (MG) and Congo red (CR) within 6 min were 93 % and 55 %, respectively. For comparison, the adsorption rates of MG and CR by graphene hydrogel alone within 30 min were only 10 % and 48 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the free radical polymerization of PAA and PVA also effectively improved the mechanical strength of the graphene hydrogel, and the PPG remained structurally stable under the action of 800 g of gravity. The results of adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption process of PPG on CR and MG was in accordance with Freundlich adsorption and pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption. Based on the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) results, the adsorption performance of PPG mainly originated from physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and π-π conjugation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene based materials with superhydrophobic/superoleophilic attributes are highly desirable for water treatment. The graphene aerogel (GA) was prepared by hydrothermal reaction of the graphene oxide (GO) solution in the presence of dopamine followed by freeze-drying. The subsequent surface modification of GA using fluoroalkylsilane occurred by a vapor-liquid deposition process. The superhydrophobic graphene aerogel (SGA) fabricated from GA exhibits superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with the water contact angle of 156.5° and the oil contact angle of 0°. With this property, SGA could selectively adsorb various types of oils/organic solvents from the oil-water mixture. Moreover, the SGA possesses excellent low bulk density (9.6 mg cm-3), high absorption capacity (110-230 fold weight gain), and superior adsorption recyclability. With all these desirable features, the SGA is a promising candidate for oil-polluted water remediation.
Graphene Oxide/Chitosan Composite for Methylene Blue Adsorption

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has been regarded as promising adsorbent in treating water pollution. However, the high dispersibility of GO makes the separation of adsorbent/pollutant composite from aqueous environment very difficult. In this study, GO was fabricated with chitosan (CS) for dye removal, where GO-CS composite was not dispersible in water and could be easily separated by filtration or low speed centrifugation. GO-CS was found to be good adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) with a huge adsorption capacity of 4.68 x 10(2) mg/g, ranking it among the most effective adsorbents of MB. The adsorption data of MB on GO-CS were well fitted to the Freundlich model, rather than the Langmuir model. When initial MB concentration was 100 mg/L, the MB solution could be decolorized to colorless by GO-CS. After the treatment, GO-CS/MB composite could be easily removed by filtration. The implications to the application of graphene based adsorbents in water treatment are extensively discussed.
Hypercrosslinked porous polymers hybridized with graphene oxide for water treatment: dye adsorption and degradation

Abstract:Hypercrosslinked porous polymer hybridized graphene oxide with polymeric high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs/GO) were designed as versatile composites for water treatment. Morphologies, chemical composition and thermal stability of the composites were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD and TGA. Tunable adsorption properties and enhanced visible-light photocatalysis towards organic dyes were achieved by the manipulation of functional groups and the inclusion of Ag3PO4, respectively. The adsorption capacity of polyHIPEs/GO towards cationic methyl blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB) is 1250.3 and 1054.1 μg g-1, respectively. Aminated polyHIPEs/GO (polyHIPEs(NH2)/GO) possesses an adsorption capacity of 1967.3 μg g-1 to anionic eosin Y (EY). The tandem columns of polyHIPEs(NH2)/GO and polyHIPEs/GO can successively and selectively remove the cationic and anionic dyes in a mixed dye solution. Furthermore, enhanced photodegradation ability was obtained after GO reduction and Ag3PO4 addition on polyHIPEs(NH2)/GO. Results show that 3.5 × 10-5 M of MB, RB and EY can be completely photodegraded by 20 mg of the novel photocatalyst within 20, 40 and 35 min, respectively. This work demonstrates that polyHIPEs/GO exhibits tunable properties for multiply progressive applications in water treatment and catalysis.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted remarkable attention as a potential material in the fabrication of next-generation membranes with high water permeability and efficient purification. Herein, an easy and effective means of modifying GO lamellar with a phytic acid (PhA) molecule as both an inserter and a surface modifier was developed to fabricate high-performance GO-based membranes. As a result, the addition of PhA to the GO membrane enhanced hydrophilicity and enlarged the interlamellar spacing. The optimal GP-10 composite membrane displayed a high average pure water flux of 6.31 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 under an ultralow pressure nanofiltration condition, which was about 18.6 times higher than that of 0.34 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 for pure GO membrane. At the same time, it possessed the ability to reject different charged dye molecules with a rejection rate higher than 99.88%. In addition, the composite membrane also showed good structural stability under different pH conditions. This study not only provides a method to simply design GO-based membranes by introducing multifunctional small molecules but also sheds light on using such GO composite membranes in practical water separation applications.

Abstract:A graphene-enhanced supramolecular hydrogel containing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) was fabricated for the wastewater remediation. In this work, P4VP brushes were grown from function-alized graphene oxide (GO) through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Then, the P4VP-grafted GO (i.e., GO-g-P4VP) was integrated into PAA matrix to form GO-g-P4VP@PAA hydrogel as a highly efficient adsorbent for extraction of toxic metal ions from wastewater. Due to the introduction of GO-g-P4VP, the GO-g-P4VP@PAA composite hydrogel exhibited good compressive strength, and a special interconnected 3D porous network was formed in the hydrogel. The effect of pH, initial heavy metal ion concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dosage regarding the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on the hydrogel was examined. Under appropriate conditions, the GO-g-P4VP@PAA hydrogel can achieve maximum adsorption capacities of 257.28 mg/g for Pb2+, 175.79 mg/g for Cd2+. The adsorption kinetics of Pb2+ and Cd2+ on the GO-g-P4VP@PAA hydrogel followed a pseudo-second order model and the adsorption isotherms were more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the GO-g-P4VP@PAA hydrogel exhibited good reusability. After five cycles, the removal efficiency of both Pb2+ and Cd2+ still remained above 80 %. These results demonstrate the GO-g-P4VP@PAA hydrogel serves as a desirable adsorbent in removal of heavy metal cations from wastewater.
Graphene oxide/polydopamine modified montmorillonite/carboxymethyl chitosan composite aerogel for efficient removal of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ : Adsorption behavior, mechanism and DFT study

Abstract:A novel ternary composite aerogel was prepared from graphene oxide (GO), polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDA-MMT), and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) for the removal of Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ . Adding PDA-MMT and CMCS enhances GO aerogels' mechanical properties and adsorption properties. GO/PDA-MMT/CMCS with rich pore structure and many exposed active sites, exhibited outstanding Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Cd 2+ adsorption capacities with Q m of 465.12, 354.61, and 317.46 mg/g, respectively. Synergistic interaction between GO, PDA-MMT, and CMCS enhances adsorption properties. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir models better describe the adsorption process of GO/PDA-MMT/CMCS. The adsorption is mainly monomolecular chemisorption, primarily controlled by chemisorption. The GO/PDA-MMT/CMCS exhibited excellent ionic interference and cyclic stability resistance. The removal rate was still > 81 % after 5 cycles. Fixed-bed and industrial wastewater adsorption verified the practicality of GO/PDA-MMT/CMCS. DFT calculations revealed the minimum adsorption energy for Pb 2+ (-3.77 Ha), signifying a more stable binding between Pb 2+ and the GO/PDA-MMT/CMCS. The adsorption mechanism is mainly chelation, ion exchange, synergistic effect, electrostatic attraction, and pore adsorption. The aerogel has high adsorption performance, low cost, and easy separation, which is favorable for its application in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The copper ion adsorption in wastewater treatment has gained increasing attention, which lies in the development of efficient adsorption materials. Herein, we demonstrated a novel class of macroscopic liquid-like three-dimensional (3D) graphene oxide (GO)-based derivatives for copper ion adsorption. To be specific, a supermolecular self-assembly process of GO in water induced by melamine and phytic acid, thus generating three-dimensional porous structural GO backbone. Then, the polyetheramine (M2070) and organosilane (KH560) were tethered via the covalent linkage, thus forming flexible oligomer species with silicon hydroxyl groups. Then, the oligomer species were attached to the surface of the GO backbone, yielding a novel class of black, homogenous GO-based derivatives. As expected, the liquid-like GO-based derivative presents the superior copper ion removal ability due to the synergistic effect of additions (melamine, phytic acid) and 3D porous structural backbone. More significantly, we presume that the rich libraries of organic oligomer species, together with other 2D nanosheets-based backbones (e.g., MXene, boron nitride, hydrotalcite, etc), undoubtedly provide more convenience for the further construction of liquid-like 3D derivatives, eventually open a new era of advancing the development of novel adsorbents for heavy ions remove.

Abstract:Novel versatile hydrogels were designed and composited based on covalent bond and noncovalent bond self-assembly of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) networks and nanohybrids doped with graphene oxide (GO). The structures and properties of the neat PMAA and the prepared PMAA/GO hydrogels were characterized and analyzed in detail, using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling and cationic absorption, etc. The swelling results showed that the water penetration follows the non-Fick transport mechanism based on swelling kinetics and diffusion theory. The swelling capacity of PMAA and composited PMAA/GO hydrogels toward pH, Na+, Ga2+, and Fe3+ was investigated; the swelling ratio was tunable between 4.44 and 36.44. Taking methylene blue as an example, the adsorption capacity of PMAA/GO hydrogels was studied. Nanohybrid doped GO not only self-associated with PMAA via noncovalent bonding interactions and had a tunable swelling ratio, but also interacted with water molecules via electrostatic repulsion, offering a pH response of both the network and dye absorption. Increases in pH caused a rise in equilibrium swelling ratios and reduced the cumulative cationic dye removal.

Abstract:Graphene oxide/conducting polymer (GO/CP) composite hydrogels were prepared by in situ chemical polymerization of corresponding aromatic monomers in aqueous dispersions of GO sheets. GO/polypyrrole (PPy), GO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and GO/polyaniline (PANi) hydrogels were obtained by this technique, and the mechanism of gelation was discussed. Among them, GO/PPy composite hydrogels were tested to have low critical hydrogel concentrations (<1%, by weight), high storage moduli (>10 kPa) and electrical conductivity, and strong electrochemical activity. A gas sensor based on a typical GO/PPy hydrogel showed high sensitivity towards ammonia gas.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Graphene oxide and polyaniline have some unique properties and are considered as new generation materials for various applications. One major application of these materials is the adsorption of pollutants. In this study, Graphene oxide was synthesized with different levels of oxidation by using the modified Hummers method. Polyaniline/graphene oxide composite was synthesized by in situ polymerization with GO loading at 10% and 50% and further the composite is casted inside a disposable syringe by using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a dispersing agent. An adsorption experiment was carried out for water containing pesticide chlorpyrifos. The produced materials were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy & and XRD. Morphology was studied by SEM images. The FTIR spectra shows the formation of functional groups like -OH, -COOH on graphene, which may increase the hydrophilicity and adsorption properties. FTIR spectra of the composite portrayed the formation of bonds between polyaniline and graphene oxide. XRD peaks were obtained corresponding to crystals of polyaniline and graphite sheets. The adsorption efficiency was determined by analysis of water samples before and after filtration by using GC-MS. The composite produced with 50% amount of GO showed optimum results for the removal of chlorpyrifos. However, the composite with 10% GO loading is showing very low efficiency for the removal of chlorpyrifos. The PANI/GO composite is a possible candidate for the treatment of river water polluted by agricultural pollutants.

Abstract:The removal of various contaminants from aqueous systems by adsorption has been proven to be one of the most recommended approaches for the treatment of wastewater. Many significant advantages, such as relatively low cost, good availability, ease of fabrication and high efficiency, are included in this technology. In addition, the adsorption of inorganic/organic substances from aqueous solutions is also a potential alternative for the recovery of valuable substances from wastewater. Three-dimensional (3D) graphene (Gr)- and graphene oxide (GO)-based architectures have shown many advantages, such as good selectivity and high effectiveness in the adsorption of metal ions or organic molecules, and even viruses at very low concentration levels. Adsorption by 3D Gr/GO-based architectures is a complex process, and possible mechanisms such as ion exchange, chelation, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, surface adsorption, p-π interactions, p-p interactions, π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions involved in the adsorption processes have been also discussed in detail. Herein, we present a critical review for the rational selection of effective and multifunctional components, as well as the fabrication of well-designed novel 3D Gr/GO composites for selective adsorption of specific contaminants, which can provide references for researchers in related fields.

Extraordinary water adsorption characteristics of graphene oxide

Abstract:The laminated structure of graphene oxide (GO) confers unique interactions with water molecules which may be utilised in a range of applications that require materials with tuneable hygroscopic properties. Precise roles of the expandable interlayer spacing and functional groups in GO laminates are not fully understood till date. Herein, we report experimental and theoretical study on the adsorption and desorption behaviour of water in GO laminates as a function of relative pressure. We have observed that GO imparts excellent water uptake capacity of up to 0.58 gram of water per gram of GO (g g-1), which is much higher than silica gel a conventional desiccant material. More interestingly, the adsorption and desorption kinetics of GO is one order of magnitude higher than silica gel. The observed extraordinary adsorption/desorption rate can be attributed to the high capillary pressure in GO laminates as well as micro meter sized tunnel like wrinkles located at the surface.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) is an attractive material for water treatment, although its high surface energy restricts its practical application. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a well-dispersed and interconnected, functionalized biopolymeric GO with magnetic activity, namely, cl–CS–p(MA)/Fe 3 O 4 NPs. This three-dimensional, sponge-like nanostructured material is composed of graphene oxide nanosheets dispersed in functionalized chitosan/poly(methacrylic acid) and is cross-linked with in situ-developed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Methacrylic acid (MA)-functionalized chitosan (CS) cross-linked with N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA), designated as cl–CS–p(MA), facilitates the stable dispersion of GO nanosheets, providing a proper solid matrix for the generation of well-dispersed in situ Fe 3 O 4 NPs. The methodology allows for the generation of numerous binding sites with an interconnected morphology, facilitating the rapid uptake of a cationic dye in significant quantity, e.g., methylene blue (MB), which is used as a model water pollutant. In this work, the structural architecture of cl–CS–p(MA)/Fe 3 O 4 NPs was characterized with multiple approaches, and the adsorption mechanism was revealed to be an electrostatic interaction. The synthesized nanocomposite showed significant recyclability and structural stability. Adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 20 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 2478 mg/g for MB, surpassing the values reported for any other adsorbents to date.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), a derivative of graphene, is a novel carbon material that has attracted a lot of attention in the field of membrane materials as its ability to achieve layer-by-layer stacking and the formation of nanochannels between the lamellae makes it excellent for selective separation of substances. In this paper, the separation mechanism of the GO membrane is summarized. According to the different separation substances, the separation mechanism of graphene oxide membrane is reviewed from two aspects of metal ions and organic pollutants. Next, the preparation methods of graphene oxide membranes is introduced, such as spin-coating, vacuum filtration, dip-coating, spraying, and layer-by-layer self-assembly, followed by a review on the structural regulation of GO. Finally, this paper concludes with an overview of the potential development prospects and challenges of GO membranes.

Preparation and characterization of graphene oxide/O-carboxymethyl chitosan (GO/CMC) composite and its unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) adsorption performance from wastewater

Abstract:The removal of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) has long been a concern because of its harmful effect on the environment and humans. This study aimed to prepare a novel graphene oxide/O-carboxymethyl chitosan (GO/CMC) composite adsorbent using the solution-blending method for the removal of UDMH from wastewater. The prepared GO/CMC was systematically characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, Raman, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric, and zeta potential analyses. The effects of initial pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time, and recyclability on the UDMH adsorption behaviour of GO/CMC were studied. The adsorption kinetics was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption process was mainly controlled by chemisorption. Adsorption isotherms indicated that the adsorption of UDMH by GO/CMC followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption mechanisms were mainly electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and surface complexation. Furthermore, GO/CMC composites can be used as a renewable and eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of UDMH wastewater. The designed GO/CMC composites exhibited a relatively satisfactory recyclability and removal efficiency after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Abstract:In this study, superlight adsorbent sponges (bulk density 0.016-0.049 g·cm-3) were developed based on graphene oxide (GO) cross-linked with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The interlayer spacing of the GO nanosheets was increased by the insertion of PVA, and good mechanical integrity was attained by the cross-linked structure. They showed excellent continuous flow adsorption capacity (CFAC) when methylene blue (MB) was used as a model contaminant; a water flux of 396 L·m-2·h-1 through a 2 cm thick adsorbent sponge was achieved at a hydraulic head of only 10 cm water, with an almost complete retention of MB. They corresponded to a water permeability of 4.0 × 105 L·m-2·h-1·MPa-1, which was several orders of magnitudes higher than GO-based membranes for similar applications reported in the literature. The GO nanosheets were completely immobilized in the sponge by cross-linking with PVA, and thus, there was no GO nanoparticle leaching or flushing out into the treated permeate water, which was another advantage over direct use of GO powders in water treatment. Because of the high water permeability and CFAC, the cross-linked GO/PVA sponges have a great potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Developing efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment technologies is of great significance due to the increasingly serious global environmental issue. The direct discharge of wastewater containing a large amount of harmful substances from industrial activities and daily life has severe impacts on ecosystems and human health. Therefore, this study aims to address this issue by developing a novel graphene/polyacrylamide interpenetrating network hydrogel for wastewater adsorption. By interpenetrating graphene and polyacrylamide, the advantages of both materials can be fully utilized to enhance the efficiency and performance of hydrogel wastewater adsorption. In addition, tannic acid is innovatively used as a reducing agent, not only connecting the dispersed graphene layers but also acting as a reducing agent. The hydrogel was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, surface morphology, and adsorption performance in this study. It was found that the thermal decomposition temperature of the composite hydrogel was improved with increasing the graphene content. The equilibrium water absorption capacity of the composite hydrogel was approximately 300%, and the adsorption capacity for NiCl2 was approximately 110.25 mg/g, demonstrating promising potential for practical applications. The reaction kinetics also conformed closely to the pseudo-second-order adsorption model, indicating an intraparticle diffusion model. This study provides an alternative hydrogel for treating wastewater.Graphical Abstract
